There is no need to be ashamed to be British... It was not your fault but it is important for us from the younger generations of each culture to be honest about our ancestors. AND henceforth make policies and judgements about other based on our shared history

Most Indians don't have any grudge against the current generation of Brits. It would be senseless to even think on those lines. But what hurts many is that many Brits are ignorant about the horrors of the British Empire and how they hold Winston Churchill so high in esteem. As Dr Shashi Tharoor often says, it's good to forgive but not to forget the past. Because how will we know where to go if we don't now where we come from.

I'm a german citizien, it was interesting to see your reactions. I learned a lot, not all detail of course, but a lot about german WWII atrocities and the Holocaust in school. It was the same kind of awakening about my country at an earlier age. What is shocking to me is that you didn't learn anything about the dark side of british colonization and history in school. If you do not learn such things in school, how will you ever be able to not following down the same path again as a nation, not to talk about atonement? How will you ever be able to foresee things going to happen, if you even cannot imagine that your leaders and your military are capable of executing the worst inhumane atrocities? Same with the US by the way, it's even worse.
@@monjir8707 No, one cannot say that, but Winston Churchill was responsible for a specific genocidal outcome of his actions too. Not the kind of intended well planned factorylike kind of mass murder Hitler was responsible for, more like accepting the death of millions as collateral damage of his actions in regard to India. And of course doing so he was showing a total disrespect for human life. There are some similarities, but there are obvious differences too.
@@paul8158 I feel that's what makes Germany great. The fact that you apologize for the actions of the past, even though they werent done by you, isn't for the people it was done to, rather your own atonement. From time to time, everyone needs to atone, because we all go wrong sometimes. Similarly countries need to atone for bad actions in their past, especially if they were egregious. I've been to Europe and I've lived in both Germany and the UK. Even though as European countries, they are largely the same economically, the difference I saw in Germany was that there was large respect of human dignity which was not present in the UK. People were nice and respectful in Germany, unlike the UK. There was a sense of humility inspite of Germany's contributions to the world. Immigrants were treated with respect, there was no Islamophobia to my knowledge or my experience. Socioeconomic disparity was far lesser. It broke my heart to hear and see that nearly 20% of children suffer from food insecurity in the UK, something that doesn't exist in Germany. Healthcare is socialized and far more advanced than the UK.

@suburben yobbo And somehow these facts justify the atrocities Britain comitted in India. It's like we say in hindi बेवकूफ को पैसे दे दो अक्ल नही। you're ignorant af.
I don't think it's a narrative by the indian nationalist, rather it's a truth. For those saying that those crimes were committed by the elites and not the commoners, well Britain had a govt. & those who were parliamentarians weren't much sympathetic towards INDIA either. In fact It was the barbarian Churchill, whose decisions led to the infamous BENGAL FAMINE,killing no less than 2 million innocent people coupled with his hatred for INDIA. Every nation has some sort of governing organisation and it's not possible to run any nation directly by its people. The decisions of the govt is believed to reflect common people's intentions, for most of the cases. If the common people were so sympathetic towards Indians, why wasn't there a recognisable voice to cease the bads & wrongs being done to us directed towards your govt or monarch. Why there weren't any cases or trials against those who commited these atrocities. And does anyone keep all the records of the descendants of all those Britishers who did all the wrongs to India and Indians. And is it that all those who did all those terrible things and their descendants are still a distinct recognisable group even among common Britishers, it's not. Or is it that what Britain gained economically from India (looted maybe) back then, helped proper only a certain part of the country. The truth is that if it had been any other commoner, the result would've been the same, because back then you guys were mad just to do anything & everything to help feed your industries at the cost of other's lives & economy, and for most of the part you did it pretty well indeed. All that, what was unethically and inhumanly collected from colonies helped BRITAIN prosper, and i say it again the whole of Britain. And those who seek to hide this fact is simply nothing of a humane nature at all. Today's Britain owes only reparations, economic, to today's India. If reparations were to be asked for the then Indians, then it would've included lives of as many britishers as were killed by them. I dont think if I ask it, you'd be happy either. Now as for the question of other imperialist nations commiting crimes on their colonies, they deserve the same. So it's not at all wrong to say that ancestors of today's britishers shouldn't be blamed. And if you've got a single evidence to show a recognisable part of the then Britain's commoners held even an iota of sympathy for India, I'd be glad. The British traders, crown people, govt people and at last common people, all were equally guilty of the crimes. For those who believe that SHASHI is asking for too much, i guess you must remember that Britain owes many lives too, and we're not asking for it anymore. And for those who believe that they were way more humane, think about it; are you ready to cost the lives of your parents or daughters or wives or kids for a more prosperous life. The best I can say is that we must never forget what happened to us , so that should history try to repeat itself, we can give befitting reply to the invaders and colonisers.
And Remember! The Queen of England is still alive, hence she was a part of everything that Mr. Tharoor mentioned. Whatever happened, is still not history... it's still something that happened yesterday...

@suburben yobbo Except basic economic analysis displays clearly that the wealth and economic preeminence many Britons would benefit from via Imperialism and Colonialism put them significantly ahead of the colonized peoples. Attempting to hide behind the "elites" to excuse the actions of British colonialism is little different from Germans hiding behind the fact that while they may have marched and paraded for Nazism, they didn't themselves build the foundations of the death camps or marched Poles, Jews, and Romani into them, only a small number of Germans actually did it. It's not a matter of the numbers the collective guilt to remains with the people who did indeed have the capacity to prevent said actions and hold a form of culpability from the benefit of said actions.
@suburben yobbo "no matter what sad bigoted or ignorant argument" Noting a people group who benefitted from the empire is responsible for said empire's expansion by providing the soldiers and settlers of said empire bare responsibility for empire's actions isn't bigoted you're just insanely sensitive to your state's culpability. and by extension it's people. "as it forms the basis of justification for nationalism and racism against British people," God forbid Asians, Africans, and Native Americans, as displayed by Tharoor that the British Empire was achieved at their expense. To be quite honest here with everyone respectfully here in this comment section, the whole britain was literally made by India's money that they had at that time which was around $40 trillion dollars and that money was spent in making the whole United Kingdom (It includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) what it is today, that stolen money is the reason why U.K come under being a "developed country" and India literally lacks behind in everything as well as being considered as a third world country, that colonialism was the reason for so many people even today to be suffering from poverty, I've honestly seen so many people from outside world saying that "India is a poor country" they should honestly learn some history and then open their mouth about it. Even british people of today's generations gets proud of their so called "London" and think that they don't owe none to anybody, why do you think in the british schools no kid is taught what britain did to India? They don't want their current generation to have that weight on their shoulders of the black deeds of their incestors and be depressed about their whole life, even quite frankly, start protesting against their own government and people for giving reparations. India definitely does owe reparations as well their kohinoor diamond that the so called "queen" wears on her old head.

Another point, india started off with more industries than china in 1947 yet china is the better of the 2 today. Who is to blame here? The UK? No, absolutely not
Its sad that british students are not even taught about those mistakes and the Queen still crowned KOHINOOR with pride, its the CROWN of SHAME,LOOT & BLOOD. Dont know why she is respected so much by british people

20:59 "...I was taught what 'Britain' wants me to know about history..." ... and so was I some thirty years earlier. Nothing has changes in my lifetime. Therein lies a a large part of the problem. As George Orwell so succinctly put it "history is written by the winners". The people who decide the curriculum, who colour our view of our history in Britain are the same social strata, the "upper classes" that historically benefited most from that history, and who put forward their view of it. The fundamental issue with Britain even today, is that we are still tugging our forelocks and accepting the word of our "betters". Revering our Royal masters and those who by dint of having the most loot, wield the most power. These "betters" are in many cases the same lineages that brought us, and controlled Empire, and who control many of today's large corporations, the empirical model for the 21st century. Bear in mind that Indian "colonization" was in the main a business. The "Honorable" their word, not mine East India Company (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company ) was the principal herder and butcher of the cash cow that was colonial India. Follow the money. Find out the names of the families who controlled that "enterprise". Find out how much of England (and the feudal plaything of the rich, even today, that is Scotland) they still own as a result of their forefathers colonial robbery. This is the reason why there is such resistance to making a formal apology. Those who should make such an apology, Royalty, Lords and Sirs, Dukes and Viscounts, the moneyed and titled progeny of the brigands who ran empire are, by and large, too proud and conceited to make such an apology, to proud to even concede the very idea that such an apology is due, or has any value. Empire, it could arguably be said, started at home, with the defeat of the Scots and the Irish, and the wholesale theft of those lands. Read about the Highland Clearances, and the Irish Famines if you want to see ethnic cleansing and starvation as a state sanctioned tool, a policy of Empire, and perhaps follow up with googling "Who Owns Scotland". Examine the "managed shooting estates" of today, and compare with the similar land grabs of empire, and the extravagant excesses of "shoots" in India and Africa. Find out about the wholesale destruction of large swathes of pristine Himalayan and African forest for profit. As at "home", so later abroad. Where is all of this in the textbooks of the classrooms of England? Should reparations be paid, yes, no question, it wont cost much, simply start by reprinting a few textbooks. I am from Pakistan. We people of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (Just India than) are what we are because of British people, and British people are what they are now because of us, before Brits came according to British economist Angus Maddison, India's share of the world economy went from 24.4% in 1700 to 4.2% in 1950. India's GDP (PPP) per capita was stagnant during the Mughal Empire and within 2 hundreds years India was left from the richest countries of the world to the poorest countries of the world. Sad thing is that the truth is not taught in the history lessons in Britain, false stories are made, 2.5 million Muslims, and hundreds of thousands of Hindu and Sikhs of India fought for Britain and hundreds of thousands were killed fighting for Britain for world war 1 and 2. Muslim Soldiers: The name that stands out and has legendary status in the annals of history is of Khudadad Khan. He belonged to the 129th Duke of Connaught’s Own Baluchi’s regiment being born in the Jhelum District in what is now the Potohar region of Pakistan. Khudadad was actually the first Indian military personnel to be awarded the Victoria Cross for military gallantry, but you have statue of the dog or horse in London whichever it was in that war, but of those people, none of the people of India Pakistan and Bangladesh. Britain needs to change the books of history and should formally apologise to India Pakistan and Bangladesh for what they did, and also give back the Kohinoor diamond which was looted from there, and now it is worn by the queen, by the way it is a biggest diamond of the world.
@RKA Pakistan has nothing to claim? Has nothing to claim? Even though this speech was well put and well thought of. When he says Indian, I can understand you get a nationalistic boner hearing that but India at that time included the entire region including Pakistan and Bangladesh. So when he talk about the soldiers fighting for British or looked wealth, it was not just YOUR's it was Pakistan's and Bangladesh's too. And son, just because you called your country India after the British left, does not mean you have more right over anything. The names of your country India or Hindustan, both, are of foreign origin. Hindustan came from Arabs as Hind in Arabic was pronunciation of river Indus and so is India... a variation of the root word Indus. And before the British came, the whole region was mostly governed by the Mughals (Muslims), so when he talks about the GDP of India at that time, it was NOT your doing. You people, who now oppose Muslims, did not do anything. Whatever historic you have in India, or India is known for, was giving to you by the Muslims. And Pakistan was created over a very good reason. The reason which you can see with the rise of BJP and RSS and the state in which Kashimiris are and Indian muslims are. I can send you videos of reports done by your own country stating the economic, standards of living disparities between a hindu and a muslim of India. I can show you evidence that Hindu communities prohibit sale of property to anyone who is not a hindu, oh but wait, not just a hindu... no no, who is not a Brahmin. If you are not a Brahim you can't even live with other Brahmins regardless if you are a Hindu. So boy, keep your rhetoric to yourself as you are not fooling anyone with it but yourself.

@Shobhana Vijayakumar The 1883 British "Famine Code" was updated by an Independent India and renamed the "Scarcity Manual". "India in the 1960s was pathetically dependent on US food aid. Even in the bumper monsoon year of 1964-65, food aid totalled 7 million tonnes, over one-tenth of domestic production. Then India was hit by twin droughts in 1965 and 1966. Grain production crashed by one-fifth. Only unprecedented food aid saved India from mass starvation". Quotation by Swaminathan S. @suburben yobbo I agree with you. The commoners were ignorant and that's why it was neglected in their history books, common public wasn't aware of a Kohinoor or a Jalianwala massacre. The word RICH in Indian context was, rob India come home.
It's a different queen of England. The British Raj began in 1877 during the reign of Queen Victoria and ended in 1947 during the reign of Gorge VI, whose successor is the current queen of England. I agree about the Kohinoor thing tho.

@suburben yobbo "no matter what sad bigoted or ignorant argument"

Simple. They don't want their current generation to have that weight on their shoulders of the black deeds of their incestors and be depressed about their whole life, even quite frankly, start protesting against their own government and people for giving reparations.
India definitely does owe reparations as well their kohinoor diamond that the so called "queen" wears on her old head.

my history teacher showed me this in class
The "Honorable" their word, not mine East India Company (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company )
was the principal herder and butcher of the cash cow that was colonial India.
By putting some truth in the history books that build a picture of of our past for us children of the imperialists.
But, don't hold your breath waiting for a meaningful apology from those responsible. They are long dead, and their unashamed offspring are too well programmed at Eaton and Harrow and are too lordly, proud, superior, arrogant, conceited, haughty, pompous, presumptuous, pretentious, bumptious to ever stoop so low, as to offer a humble apology.
I for what little it may be worth, I admit to my remorse and regret at the part we the British have played in increasing the sum total of human suffering.
I have no doubt that this will irritate and annoy the many who still believe the Empire to be, by and large a good thing. To them I say, enjoy your annoyance.
As Indian, it's hard to believe your comment. Something was done purposely to ashame humanity. We can't forget, we never will, still it's good to work together to make this world peaceful and trustworthy.

I went to Andamans last year. It was an amazing place. There was this island called Viper island, the island was amazing with peacocks, deers, and ruins. It supposedly had the best bakery in all of Asias, catering to the British. This island overlooked the mainland which had the most notorious prisons in India the Andaman Cellular Jail. the jail housed Indian freedom fighters that were actually making a mark. The brutalities of that place are un-imaginable..very small cells, inhumane, inmates made to work till they are bone, they were made to work on extracting oil from some seeds, that was used in their bakery!! the contrast btw Viper Island and Andaman mainland is that of heaven and hell..

We would have progressed faster together than what we are now.
It's an absolute pleasure to hear a British lady acknowledging the mistakes of the then British rulers. Subscribed just to see more of such reactions. Keep it going. 👍
