Shashi Tharoor interview: How British Colonialism 'destroyed' India

- Indian MP Shashi Tharoor talks to Jon Snow on Channel 4 News about British colonial misdeeds and their echoes today. Subscribe for more identity politics: bit.ly/LtASif.
‘Britain destroyed India through looting, expropriation - and outright theft - all conducted in a spirit of deep racism and amoral cynicism.’ One man's blistering critique of our colonialist past by one of the world’s leading diplomats. Shashi Tharoor, now an Indian MP, has just published his latest book on the iniquities of the British Empire. And its themes have echoes today.
The word "loot" is also looted from Hindi... Lol...
Read up on the Bargi, they were created to loot the lad of Bengal, their sole purpose was to collected loot and they were INDIAN
@ИƎMƎƧîƧ ρЯîMƎ w The Marathis were Indian. That is like saying they that somebody from Edinburgh when talking about the British, is they were Scottish actually. This is one of the reasons that I am against apologising because Indian empires did exactly the same as European ones.

@@shaibidhar5737 Typical, anybody who dares say the truth about India is a racist, but yes you are right where India is concerned i am a racist. But I find it ironic that a person from India, the most racist country in the world should call me a racist. Maybe you should ask yourself what made me this way? When I visited India I certainly had no ill feeling towards the country or its people, I even donated money and toys to an orphanage in Mumbai, what has changed me attitude to you people, is the raise of nationalism in India that blinds Indians to the facts and makes them think they are some kind of master race who has never done or can do any wrong. It is the racism, the hate and the ignorance I see from Indians on the web directed at my country which I love more than my life, and the demanding of an apology, when you people were no better than we were , that is why my attitude towards Indians has changed, so yes where Indians are concerned I am a racist. It seems Indians think that they can be as insuting to other nationalities as thy like and no one can retailate. I hate Indians.
@@englishalan222 Indians do not believe in master race let alone us being the master race! Maybe you should understand how that sense of nationalism came? And now people are overprotective of their national identity and will take no bs directed towards that? You donated money and toys to an orphanage? Please! Don't even get me started!

@@rohith1729 can you explain how empire was good for india?
In 200 years neither our population grown much nor our per capita income. When British came to india, our per capita was approx 900 and 1200 for britain, but when they left india, per capita of britian became almost 10-15 times of India.
Simply, Britain became The great became after invading and looting India.
@@Abhinay_Singh0 In 1750, India had 23% of the world's GDP because it had 25% of the world's population. However, Britain was already a wealthy country even before it colonized India. If we look at the per-capita income of India and Britain in the 1750s as per Angus Maddison data, Britain's per-capita income was three times that of India, and India's per-capita income had been declining for a century before Britain won the Battle of Plassey. Comparing the total GDP of India and Britain in the 1750s to argue that India was richer than Britain is like saying that Uttar Pradesh is richer than Goa today. Later, the Industrial Revolution occurred in the Western world after the Scientific Revolution, with the invention of machines and technologies like the steam engine, and their wealth increased exponentially. Meanwhile, India's global share of GDP dropped to 4% in 1950. The same thing happened in China, which was not directly colonized. In fact, China's per-capita income was even lower than India's at the time of independence. During the 1750s, China's per-capita income was higher than India's. Therefore, if we say that Asian countries are poorer because of colonization, then what happened to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Ethiopia, and Liberia, which were not colonized? It's worth noting that Nepal has a similar history and culture to India, yet it is the poorest country in Asia. The fact that Nepal was not colonized by the British undermines the argument that colonization is solely responsible for a country's level of poverty.

Nothing. British history neglects American independence as well. Tbh, American colony was not a big colony back at time. British history focuses on domestic wars and various houses of royals like Tudors, Henry's, Edwards, and later mountbatten and George (during India colony era). From economic POV, it focuses on industrial revolution and class struggles. Only the top 1% British nobles had meaningful income derived from India. The rest 99% were poor and middle class. The average British blue collared coal worker was not beneficiary of Indian colonial system directly. In wars, British history focuses on wars with french, Spanish, Dutch and world wars.

Fantastic account of Colonialism. His arguments ring true for all Commonwealth countries.
My parents were from Sri Lanka and it was the same there. They were really shocked when they emigrated to Britain,at the level of ignorance and prejudice they encountered.
The toffs of the ruling class neglected to educate the ordinary people to understand how other countries were exploited.Indeed,
working class Brits were left ignorant of the way in which they themselves were exploited by their own leaders.
Fleeing towards the oppressors
Throughout history, powerful nations have invaded and conquered many other countries. For instance, India was under Mughal rule before the British colonization. Being defeated often implies that the conquered nation was incapable or too weak to resist.
In the modern world, countries like Japan have managed to rebuild and prosper even after facing a nuclear attack. Germany and most European nations had to rise from the ashes after World War II, demonstrating resilience and determination. Rather than whining, Shashi should adopt the second approach. History is history
But saar the Indians from India said that the British stole all their toilets saar and that is why Unicef ( year 2014) reported that *India continues to be the country with the highest number of people (597 million people) practising open defecation*
Mughal rule was slightly different. While they could certainly be oppressive, they didn't withdraw resources and wealth from the country and move it elsewhere as the British did.
By invoking Japan and Germany as examples, you've actually reinforced Tharoor's argument. The US invested $18 billion (in today's money) in Japan's recovery after WWII, the Marshall Plan also saw billions flow into West Germany to help rebuild. So you actually support reparations. Congratulations!
@ishaanrahman9880 Yet, the initial point persists. Throughout history, many countries were invaded and pillaged by powerful nations, simply indicating their vulnerability. Ambitious nations, however, rose from the ashes. Shashi Tharoor continually laments, resembling a schoolchild pleading to avoid bullying, which is sort of a shame for modern India in my opinion.
@@dinsummer535 But, as I said, they didn't simply "rise from the ashes". Japan and Germany received significant financial assistance from their former enemies. Since you admire their recoveries so much, wouldn't you support the same for India?
@ishaanrahman9880 So what is Sashi Tharoor purpose, get a compensation for India ?
I haven't seen him asking that, just bringing out the facts to show India got bullied.
Indian subcontinent GDP was 26% of the entire world GDP in 1730 and after 200 years of plunder war destruction and loot it got reduced to just 4% in 1947
@expiller That was a proven fact. Read history books written by Shashi tharoor based on demonstrated evidences.
You should also remember other continent economy keep on growing .Just look at US how it grow to no 1 economy from zero in the 17th century. Why Britain GDP declining after those British Empire collapsed? @@bobsingh5521 so many countries are No.1 in so many 3rd world things too, not only India. But the British really did steal a lot from the commonwealth nations.
I’m currently reading Tharoor’s book and it’s been a real eye-opener. I was already aware that the actions of Britain and Britons in the Indian continent weren’t something to be proud of, but when confronted with the stories and statistics it’s staggering that there is a collective amnesia about what happened. Just one example being India having a quarter of the world’s economy before Britain took over, compared to just 3% when they left. India was a relatively advanced civilisation, Britain destroyed local manufacturing and forced it to become agricultural.
Are you British ?
Please read Dr. B R Ambedkar’s “Pakstan or Partition of India”
Page 50 onwards, the condition of Hindus under moghal rule.
Hadn’t it been for the brits, India would hav been an Islamic country.
It’s clear, who has anger towards brits and who is brainwashing the Indian Hindus.
"The statistic that India produced 25 per cent of world output in 1800 and 2 to 4 per cent of it in 1900 does not prove that India was once rich and became poor. It only tells us that industrial productivity in the West increased four to six times during this period...National income statistics do not show that during British rule the Indian economy became steadily poorer". Source: Tirthankar Roy, Professor of Economic History at LSE, born and educated in India.
The reason that the Indian sub-continent had an estimated 25% of world output was because it had so much of the world's population, over 20%. An industrial Revolution and increased productivity in the West meant India's share of the world GDP became progressively less. This doesn't mean India became poorer, just that the total amount of world GDP grew larger.
@StonkSlayd Britain came to trade and then invested huge sums. The British created an Indian coal industry from nothing, a valuable natural resource for India. Coal was used to power the railways. Without coal India could not have a modern steel industry. Tata Steel was founded by Indians in 1907 and is now one of the largest steel companies in the world. In 2018 the Tata Group "contributed about 4% to the country’s GDP and paid 2.24% of the total taxation in India, the highest by any corporate group". wiki
@StonkSlayd "And on the other side of the balance sheet were the immense British investments in Indian infrastructure, irrigation and industry. By the 1880's the British had invested £279 million in India, not much less than one fifth of their entire investment overseas. By 1914 the figure had reached £400 million. The British increased the area of irrigated land by a factor of eight, so that by the end of the Raj a quarter of all land was irrigated, compared with just 5 per cent of it under the Mughals. They created an Indian coal industry from scratch which by 1914 produced nearly 16 million tons a year. They increased the number of jute spindles by a factor of ten". Niall Ferguson, Empire

Lord Macaulay's Address to the British Parliament on 02/02/1835:
I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.
Thana64: Thanks for the 1835 Macaulay's address to the British Parliament. I have been searching for this quote for a while to augment my comments of what the British wanted an Indian to be like - an aping Briton but in colour having washed his personality and his heritage out of his body and soul, and turning him into servile subservient bapu - ever nodding his head side-to-side in agreement to his master's voice and command. Macaulay did manage to the the Indian Education Act passed to gets Indians to communicate and dress in English manner. Some of the old top Indian colleges of Indian still to this day continue with this remininants of the past British Raj glory. It took someone with the stature of Mahatma Gandhi to stand up to these racialist imperialists off the back India.

Britain was very rich if you define "rich" by the amount of wealth held by the upper class. The common citizens of Britain weren't much better off than the Indians. The British upper classes weren't then and aren't now very fond of sharing their success with their fellow countrymen.
Shashi tharoor is probably the only Indian politician who I pay attention to when he speaks. Love him. He makes great points. India was one of the top five economies in the world before the British came over. Then they reduced it to ashes.
The only thing I am thankful to the British for is that they helped create the idea of a politically unified India, which was rare in pre-british times. Only visionaries like shivaji thought on those lines.
its a nice rhetorical point with not much basis in reality. the avg briton was already richer than the avg indian in 1600 long before britain came to India. most of the industrial revolution had already finished before the empire took root in india. all the scientific and engineering inventions - rail, electricity etc were already in place. the scientific revolution occured long before indians had mass education. india was poor because it did not have any scientific revolution for the masses. its education was only for the elite. its a lie to say that india financed britain's industrial revolution. there is zero data for it. not saying that the empire was good for india, but india's failure was not particularly caused by empire and britain's success was not because of india's failures. its a lie
@@Dexters-lb2ll okay you know nothing. Educate yourself on the timelines of what you're talking about.
@@Dexters-lb2ll ain't no one talking about avg Indians and avg Britons. We are talking about NATIONAL ECONOMIES. The industrial revolution didn't get into full speed until the Victorian era, by which time England were already well-entrenched in India, to the point that just 20 years after Victoria's coronation, Britain had to beat back an armed rebellion from Indians against British rule. You're wrong in almost every single thing you said
@@dudesayingthings national economies dont mean anything - gdp in india grew 300% across the british raj - which was the same as the so called 'hindu growth rate' that lasted till the end of socialist india 1990. so called NATIONAL economy is meaningless because these stats are simply estimations by Angus maddison - its not as if a survey was done. gdp itself was invented as a concept in the 1940s. the more the number of people in a country, obviously its gdp is higher. it is per capita gdp alone that matters. national economy is a meaningless accounting tautology. obviously india had no newton or kelvin or maxwell or faraday. if they had, they made no practical contributions. thats why the spinning jenny or the steam engine were built in britain and not india. indian weaver kept focusing on handlooms. the world of handlooms was dead, but indians did not adapt. this is quite non controversial
@@dudesayingthings The industrial revolution was from 1760 to 1840 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Revolution . long before 1857 or victoria as empress. the empire was crappy, but india was poor not because of the empire, but because it missed the industrial revolution bus under the marathas, mughals etc. they were busy fighting each other and society stagnated
