Without doubt the most underated British talent, everyone talks about Bowie, Elton John, lennon and McCartney etc etc, but Ian Dury is up there with them
As great as he was, no, he isn't up there with them.
As much as I love a lot of his work, he has two, maybe three great albums and a lot of inessential ones
Quintessentially English, kinks, jam etc these are too
No he is/was not. He was clever, original and one could say brave as well but he comes nowhere close to any of the people you mention.
He was an absolute genius. 💯 pure gold. Very smart man & so clever with his amazingly Cockney rhyming slang. I still miss him dearly but still always play his music. Yes indeed he was up there with the greats. ❤
What a charming bloke. You can feel how the whole room are hanging on to his every word.
Charming? You sound like you were aloud to have your own thought. Careful now.
Ian Dury was a bloody marvel! Way ahead of his time... tough as nails... and a true words-smith.
We Don't get the like's of him any more, honest, funny, intelligent and enormously talented. Thankyou Mr D.
His son Baxter is really good
@@justythrasher he's more of a dandy prick , notorious cause of his father
We do, you just need to get into the present old man.
I never completely understood him until now I found out he was punched out by his headmaster. Now it all makes sense.
Man with Polio,,,
Remember not tooooo000000 to get vaccinated...
Who saw the Glass
Half Full
I met l lan dury he came to my disabled school several times in South London back in the 1970s what a great man he was one of the best. Nice one
A lovely poet. A real good bloke and I totally believe his horror story about being at a grammar school in the 70's. A few of my teachers were just violent thugs.
@@hopebgood grammar school (and private school) in the 60s
Charlton park?
Ian Dury, Dianna Dors and Arthur Scargill - what a line-up!!
Casey Jones . I was surprised how old he actually was . Seven in 1948. He would be 71 next year, making him an authentic rocker and not a punk at all .

This guy is an inspiration. With the right mental attitude you can achieve. RIP legend.
You sound American. You go and achieve. You could, Stop using words like " Legend" Liar in the make.
Ian used his difficulty, rather than get depressed about it, he used it to his advantage. Ain't been any band like the blockheads before or since.
I saw Ian at Hammersmith in 1979 on the 'Do it yourself' tour, when I was 15. It was one of the best gigs I've ever been to, fantastic!
I also was at that Hammersmith odeon gig do it yourself tour 1979.l when with my brother phill and his mate Ian. Very good gig and a great night out nice one
A very talented man, very clever song writer. Still with us by way of his recordings.
yes! also still with us because we love him.
This is why Michael Parkinson was a great interviewr because he let the celebrity talk
Absolutely, a rare quality. Nowadays its 5 minutes, plug what ever it is you are on for, talk utter bollocks and off.
Spot on demented nun.
Parkinson and Carson. Today they're all self important political puppets.
Its a low bar, but a fair point
Coolest guy in history. Rest in peace, genius!
You haven't met me yet😉
Yes well Saif Sir
'1948 was it Arf?' Loved this guy.
I remember seeing Ian and the blockheads at the lyceum in London. He fell over and a roadie picked him up. He just laughed if off and turned it into a rhym. Great man , great band, great memories.
Funny that I saw him at the Lyceum but he was with Kilburn and the high roads ✌
Spent many school days singing to New Boots & Panties album.I still play Ian's songs now. What a top man.He just wrote fantastic songs about real life.....A supreme Talent
Ian Dury did more for the 'Disabled' by 'DOING' rather than merely 'BEING'
Bit selfish there. Merely is a word you use. It's only used in English, Spanish , German and Egyptian. Just my thought.
Wow I never realized he was crippled. What an amazing talent & such an inspiration for overcoming his limitations! Absolute legend.
I think you're right Phoenix, that is often the case....
Great comment: Well written. I concur.
speak for yourself
top tune choon Mr Ian Dury ua-cam.com/video/6isXNVdguI8/v-deo.html
The way he held himself on stage, it wasn't easy to see it. His performances were so good it was hard to tell.
Ian Dury very much under appreciated here in the States. I've loved him from the late 70s. What a character, and the world is a colder place without 'im.
am i the only one who only sees talent rather than disability? great guy RIP
Nice bit of inverse virtue signalling there. Well done!
Yeah, Phil. You are the only one. Bless your heart and be well. xxxooo
Yes Phil just you.
Great songs from when I was a teenager in '79. I had no idea he had polio until I found out tonight. Great to hear about his schooling.
i honestly didnt see the disability cos i was watching the bass player on rythm stick ... ian had a cane but adam ant had face paint ...who can tell
honestly though i really never knew till later on and by that time i had found rush yes genesis and zappa so i couldnt see straight for a decade
I grew up in the 70's and loved Ian Dury. Totally unique talent. I didn't know until today that he had a disability.
I didn’t know he had this issue. I have only known and loved his music. Remarkable.
Same here. :)
Man was way ahead of the system. His lyrical talking talents were and are just amazing. Legend
So much respect for him coming out without even a cane. True inspiration and an icon.
1948 was it ARF ... Brilliant 😂😂 .. Ian dury pure genius .. Loved his music brilliant entertainer .. Feel honoured I got to see Ian and his blockheads perform at Hammersmith .. Sadly missed 🙏
There ain't half been some clever bastards
love it
Ian was great.
Lucky bleeders
Ian, I know you see this from beyond; so proud of your strength through your challenges. I sure love your music. I share with those that feel sorry for themselves for they need to hear your story. My daddy died in 1947 of polio, he was in an iron lung. So hearing you survived this journey is very touching to my soul. RIP I am a new Fan. They treated children so cruelly that were not what the public opinion was set at as Normal. What the shiiiite is normal anyway? Your music is magnificent.:-)
RIP Ian you were one of a kind.
A very funny intelligent talented wordsmith no one like this now he was a one off true legend miss U Ian RIP
A truly Remarkable Man, one of a Kind!
I clicked this because I have Parkinsons and I love Ian Dury... then I found out the interviewer is called Parkinson and Dury has Polio. Mind blown.
I always assumed he was just messed up from drugs or something when I saw his clips, pretty bad assumption.
Yep "never judge a book by its cover".....
bdbdbd; yes, I understand what you are saying . I saw him in the Wellington (NZ) town hall somewhere around 1980 , and at the time of show I had no idea he had the polio .I was like you, and I just thought he was a fuelled up beast . One of the best concert too, and I've been to some .
Um..🙋similar
But he often WAS messed up on drugs. Speed especially. He liked his speed. Just ask Wilco.
Never too late to put things straight and recognise mis-judgments are so easy to make ! That's adulthood wiseness for.
Love this man. very talented!
New Boots and Panties
One of my all time favourite albums
Charismatic and supremely talented. What a LEGEND he was 👌
He's beautiful has a tangible vulnerability that draws people in. He has a fantastic presence. RIP Ian.
Fantastic, please never delete this!
wish their was a Dury museum
My band played alongside Ian Dury in 1996
Just a charming, incredibly engaging guy. I could listen to him talk for hours. Love the cockney accent.
Just stumbled on this vid - glad I did! Ian Dury was a genius and a truly good human. And the sense of humour!
I just loved his concerts .
Always a lot of fun.
Miss him so much.
You cannot deny the man's uniqueness or determination. His hard start made him the man he became. A total one-off.
Every one with a physical problem should see this, he is humour and grace...and a wee bit of the naughtiness. I am a Canuck and I loved his stuff and him. Hit me Ian!!!!
What a fantastic guy ! Brave and honest ❤️🙏❤️
☘️🚬🥂🖤
Right... Brave and talented
legend, inspiration, talent, geezer, love him..............
I didn't know him, friend of mine played his music and I fell in love with him and Blockheads, just can't believe how amazing and smart their songs were, i regret i found out so late, he is a legend for me :)
Yeah that's what happened to me in 77 I was 13 my mate played New boots n pantys for me and I was hooked,RIP Ian X)
I meat 1977
I seen Ian's concert in Preston & He was Fantabulous! I will never forget Him, Big Love To You in Heaven🌈🌅🌌🙏
He stil hits me with his music!! Wonderful man!
Top lad, an inspiration to us all.
Marvellously talented individual despite his physical struggles. I never appreciated him when he first appeared on Top.of the pops but came to appreciate him soon after. Greatly respect him now even more since my disability. RIP Ian Dury.
I had the pleasure of getting on it with Ian after his Wellington New Zealand Concert. Early eighties and man what a GREAT concert, huge brass section and they blew us away with their sounds. RIP sir. He had tobacco mixed with his and we Kiwis cannot cop it that way,we have it straight pot naturally but Ian warmed to it and liked our Maori Wowie
Brilliant
One of the best of British.
Good man Ian Dury . His songs spoke to you .
great artist love his music & lyrics! R.i.p.!
Thanks for posting this... He was a beautiful person and an inspiration to use all !!!
I love Ian ... I was born 1978 but I loved his music still do , top man
Yes.. how is ur tennis
What a talent, thank you Ian for being such an inspiration!
Ian Dury doing what he does best... keeping it real.
i loved and still listen to his music. Thank you Ian up in the sky
Thanks so much for posting this, I had no idea that Ian had been on Parkinson... what a great interview!
Thank you for putting this up .
This is fucking unbelievable. Great interview and Ian Dury is so charming and honest and open.
Ian Dury, lived his music since ”New boots and panties” also had the fortune to know Norman Watt-Roy after they did a gig with Wilko in north if sweden -87, remarkable bassist!
Whatever happened to genuine people and performers like this guy? Truly missed.
A Gem. Don't make em like Ian Dury no more.....
Love his songs , unique !
Good to see. Love his songs.
Genius lyricist, and talented conveyor of a song. R.I.P. Ian.
1948 was it Arfur?? Scargill on the spot! Ian's lyrical, musical, humourous songs will eventually be recognised for the true genius it was! The perfect platform for his talent were the unbelievable Blockheads!
Thanx Ian dury a legend and a brilliant lad that in spite of his obvious physical probs he did something a hell of a lot just couldn't have done ! He was loved 4 being himself and achieved everything he's a miss but won't be 4got how can we ,his band cheers me up still his unique presence made the blockheads a stand out band ✌️👏👍😎❤️
Brilliant. Thanks for uploading this.
Absolute genius rest in peace maestro
Madness thought a lot of you too Mr Dury. R.I.P.
a fkn great guy---n some song n music writer---thanks uploader
Omg,tell me he doesn't look like Ray Liotta on this cover, holy shit.they say everybody has a double, Ray is his and vise versa. Incredible!
Writer, actor, musician and great character, not bad from such a dreadful start. I really miss Ian, but then again I would venture we all do
Apart from the obvious disadvantage of Polio, he had quite a decent upbringing and a middle class background. He played up the "cheeky Cockney wideboy" image brilliantly. Of course , that will be taken as criticism and a lack of sympathy. I loved the bloke to bits actually.
'A seasoned up hyena could not have been more obscener'. Impossible not to love someone who could write that.
She took me to the cleaner’s
And other misdemeanours
Til I got right up between er
Rum and er Ribena...
What a strange, delayed reaction for me. My uncle contracted polio as a boy in the 30s. Made himself walk again by the weird expedient of trying so hard and so violently that he forced a new band of muscle to grow from his upper thigh to his lower back and ribcage, a sideways hump that eventually made him fully ambulatory. By the time I knew him, in the 60s, he didn't even use a cane anymore. Very powerful, soft-spoken, strange dude.
Fast forward to Ian Dury when he began infiltrating college radio in America's hinterland, which I massively enjoyed. But, until seeing this little clip all these years later, I never even knew that Ian, too, had been polio-ed. And there is just something so undeniably and very obviously similar to me now about Ian and old Uncle Ray. Absolutely amazing.
Loose, strangely related strings over many decades suddenly, coincidentally tied together by a random U-Tube video 90 years later? Hah! Maybe all the terrible crap about this platform is actually worth it, if only for these rare epiphanies and accidental amusements. Even if we do have to contend with the idiot godling Algorithm and the millions of wacked-out loonies, perfectly gullible conspiracy theorists and very strident but equally dim naziboys who haunt and troll these comment fields.
Sudden, tangential, unexpected insight bubbling up from a river of mostly raw sewage propelled by a tsunami of proud, rank stupidity. (!) It's great--it's ironic, it's bizarrely random...and that means that these very occasional gems that make it all worthwhile were completely unintentional and not the result of the hidden, benevolent Buddha genius of the McGoogle engineers. And so it always goes.
You lost is at the end there
im australian and i love how cockney ppl are so down to earth loved ian dury had the cassette jukebox jury in 82 used to flog it to death rip ian musical poetic cockney genius xox 😊❤💐🥀
saw him in Bath in about 1976 brilliant
+Kevin Gordon Oh yeah? How's 'e look in the bath? =P
Did not know this about Ian really good music !
His role in the Cook the thief his wife and her lover was totally underrated
Amazing guy, never knew his story. God Bless him.
I so love this man. One in a billion
Wonderful!! So Wonderful!!! Thank you! So Sweet!!
RIP Sir Michael Parkinson (March 28, 1935 - August 16, 2023), aged 88
And
RIP Ian Dury (May 12, 1942 - March 27, 2000), aged 57
You both will be remembered as legends
Sweet ,we take it in our stride, miss you Ian
He arose from all that. God bless RIP
I love that even here you get snippets of his deliberately playful use of language and wordy sense of humour.
Just because he’s working class, doesn’t mean he’s not one of the most interesting, erudite, articulate men you’re likely to hear.
Lots of people assume that working class means unintelligent when nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the most stupid people i've met have been to university. Education does not guarantee intelligence.
@@jayadams681 Also, strictly speaking , he wasn't totally working class. he admitted as much several times in interviews.
What a soldier. Much respect to Mr Dury!
Channelled into a fantastic voice 👌
Parky, Diana Dors and Arthur Scargill, all "giants" in their fields. All three of them should have stood up and saluted this genuine GIANT.
I thought that was Andy Serkis when he came out. Andy did a cracking job.
do not darken the Dury doorway
My Pa also had polio down the left side, and the things he could still do, and always worked too.
nice to hear a beautiful true London accent
I was stationed in the U.K. In '77-80. My room dog and I were crazy about Ian !
"Hit me!"
Ian’s working friendship with Norman goes way back beyond 87 and Wilko ,the 70s.
what a modest man, so much respect, RIP Ian
Aww you left good memories rip Ian love your music clever
Rare insight into a hidden world. I’ve never heard him talk about those years.
Inspiration and genius was Ian Dury ❤️
Nice one, thanks for uploading this.
