  • It’s time for another Real Life Budget. I asked my readers to submit their REAL information. Real spending, real debt, and real savings goals.
I am taking those real-life numbers and showing you how I would organize and budget that information using my Budget By Paycheck® Method.
If you would like to submit your budget information to possibly be picked for a Real Life Budget that we will show on UA-cam, please reach out to budgets@thebudgetmom.com.
Today, we are looking at TBM Family member Meghan's information. Meghan is a single mom who lives in Maryland. She works two jobs and has had an issue using payday loans in the past. She struggles with spending and she wants to start saving for multiple savings goals.

To be a successful business owner and investor, you have to be emotionally neutral to winning and losing. Winning and losing are just part of the game. Risk comes from not knowing what you are doing.

Absolutely!! I'll have to be financially stable in every sense before living a luxurious lifestyle. The best thing to do with your money is to invest rightly because money left saving will end up with no returns.

At 60 years old and newly retired, my external retirement funds total around One million two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.. With no debt and minimal retirement fund allocation relative to my portfolio's value over the last three years, I recognize the importance of a financial advisor. Neglecting them isn't an option; however, thorough research is vital to find a trustworthy fiduciary advisor

I'd be retiring or working less in 8 years, and considering this financial recession, Im deciding to begin taking up skilled trades. I'm curious to know best how people split their pay, how much of it goes into savings, spendings or investments, learn around $130K per year but nothing to show for it yet.

You should contribute to your retirement diligently, or better still look into financial planning don't come to youtube for advise, consult a Local or trusted online broker/planner.

Lol I was all that HAS to be a typo. Also, idk what the HOA amount includes, but if it's not incorporating the current/soon to be due HOA dues (assuming you still live there), be sure to include that in sinking funds so you don't fall behind again. Good luck!

Single mom, disabled Veteran and guardian of my now 20 yr old daughter. If she receives SSI or SSD, she qualifies for a FREE phone through assurance wireless. I am debt free except for my home but I was in debt/bankrupt before I got sick and tired of it all. You CAN change everything when you decide you want to make the changes needed. You can do ANYTHING if you want it bad enough!

I was in a lot of HOA debt a while back after my divorce, so I can empathize with her situation. I ended up paying it all off now I use a 12 month certificate at my credit union to save for it biweekly. It’s automatic and only $26 per paycheck. Then I pay a lump sum on January 1st. I love that she has vacation goals built in. The eating/drinking is the hardest one to lower! Hang in there! ❤

Idk if you have the option available at employer but I have convinced several friends to do this at work and use the ESPP Employee Stock Purchase Plan. They aren't interested in keeping it invested into the stock but the company takes and sets aside set amount every paycheck and then at end of June and Dec they purchase the stock @ 15% discount into their account. Then can turn around and sell it the next business day to cash out the money for a 15% gain +/-. It is better than just setting it into a hysa @ 4-5%.... You will be taxed on that 15% discount if sell it right after as if that was regular income from your employer. Most have set up to have $2k of salary done that way so grabbing an extra $300 roughly. You can cash it out and then put the half year worth into a hysa as a lump sum

Honestly, one of the easiest ways I found to save money (besides budgeting) was to meal plan. I see what’s in my pantry, freezer and fridge and go from there. We hardly ever get takeout during the week anymore. I do my grocery pick up list online. If I go into the store, I will spend way more money.

As someone who works at a YMCA, the gym charge is the same as we charge an employee to have another person on their membership. For me, I pay just under $45/month for the family gym membership (which for the Y covers a lot more than just access to a work out area) but the same membership for nonemployees is $75/month.

Something that I don't see mentioned often and wish I did is getting rid of the Kindle subscription and joining your local public library. Most have the Libby app for ebooks, and even if you think your town is too small to have anything good most libraries are part of some kind of network that allows for interlibrary loans. Plus many libraries offer so many other programs and funding is so often dependent on people actually using services. Guys please save money and join (and use!) the library!

I appreciate this type of video. In this budget I would definitely look closer at the eating out and grocery bill portions. It seems excessively high for 2 people. I bet with a little meal planning and grocery list that bill could be lower. Make eating out more of a special treat versus a "I am tired, drive through it is." It is amazing how one less meal out/or drink can add up to great savings. I wish you great luck! It can be done.

Having worked for Non-profit in my younger years as a single mom, though I loved it, I had to move to the private sector to be paid for what I was doing. Career change would be first on my list. The cell phone amount stressed me out, lol. I just paid $180 for a year of mint mobile BUT, after paying for 15g of use I found I use around 1g so I was able to take the lowest subscription. I would definitely shop around on that cell phone. Gym membership also stood out to me since you work for a gym. You look in good shape being mostly debt free so some tweaking should bring you great success. Good Luck Meghan!!!

Are there any videos of single parent budgets with more than 1 child?

Surprised to see her say she's so strict with her spending when she has $260 cell phone, $900 food for 2 people, personal spending $250, $250 for her daughter, plus $100 allowance, PLUS $150 for the household. That's $1910 that could/should be like $700. That's not even including cutting subscriptions. This is a fine budget for someone who is doing well. She isn't, she's taking out payday loans and is behind on her bills like her HOA fees.
Also, no one who is in the green is taking out payday loans, so I think she isn't sticking to her budget.

she has a lot of WANTS, not NEEDS, she can cancel a lot of those and then be able to pay her car insurance, common sense!!! no one else should be paying for her own car insurance

I should have been more specific about my cell phone bill. It’s 2 phones and 2 iPads. We used to spend a lot of time in the hospital so both phone and iPads were necessary for us!
Food costs can definitely get cut down. I agree w you. That’s why I turned to Kumiko for help. It helps to have someone else look at your budget to see where you are missing.
I could have also gone into more detail about personal spending/money for my daughter, but i just grouped everything together. Shes in sports so those costs also include equipment, lessons, etc. I took the average spending of 3 months and that’s what I submitted. Thank you for the feedback! I’m definitely going to write down tips I’ve gotten from UA-cam and IG.

I’m truly learning! I’m very early on in my budgeting journey so I’m allowing myself grace, because if I don’t I will become even more discouraged!
If I could go back and submit even more specific categories, I would. Medical copays, medications, spectator entrance fees for sports, etc are also included in personal and my daughter’s categories! 🫶🏽

@@meghanflynn690 don’t let the comment above have you discouraged. Or other negative comments.
      You got this!
With medical issues there is a lot of ongoing expenses some people may not realize. You taking care of yourself and your daughter is number one priority.
Budgeting is fun for me because I love numbers, but can be overwhelming to some. Baby steps in the Financial world is still progress!! ❤❤

It would be better to just have one full time job that pays more. A teenage girl with special needs needs her mom around and not gone all the time working. Also why do people buy homes with HOA fees? It makes no sense

@@meghanflynn690 Moving does not make sense with your interest rate. But when you get caught up on the HOA fees definitely start an envelope for that to help stay on track. Even putting 10 a week away for future HOA fees will help. Next home...avoid HOA if you can. :)
