2:17 that upper ratchet is FAULTY, it shows they don't do daily checks. Depending on what this does this could cause a fatality. But the bigger picture is there's a FLAW in their checks and maintenance regime - Which ultimately leads to accidents and deaths.

Plenty of cheap hands, to make what is a very basic low tech product ( but made well)> Why buy the same from France,UK et al. I am not certain that their conditions (in China) are at all as worse as those in Uk up to post war. They at least have masks and gloves and some extraction, somewhat better conditions than I have seen in UK in my lifetime in similar production. Go to look in Vietnam and or Indonesia, India at similar low tech artisan industries and see how thay survive. The reality is that it has been the influence of western corporate retail buyers demanding that the workers have better conditions that forces the factory owners in Asia to meet basic Health and Safety conditions. This helps to assuage the guilt we have, when we see the poverty and squalor many still live in. More importantly it corals negative public opinion on the subject thus helping to maintain share value.

The only question I have is... if they are so smart and hard-working... Why were they so poor for so long??
Cause Mao??? And if so... Why go with Xi?

The west gave up manufacturing because it was more profitable to get it from other poorer countries. This in turn caused an economic boom in poorer countries through exports being ramped up, with resources being plentiful in an untapped well called China. Mao didn’t make the country poor, he basically brought the country to stand united against the nationalist party under a communist driven ideological regime. It is authoritarian to the extent that it believes necessary, and that is what has lasted to this day.
The only reason the west had more economic power in the first place was because they were technologically advanced, but none of the eastern nations reached that level of power without trading with the west. That was a fact brought upon by then technologies of war in Asia barely scratching those of the industrial age. This in turn makes it obvious that communism relies on capitalism to expand, especially to compete against anti communist powers like oligarchies and regimes by the few, but it is still communist as it stands against certain liberal approaches to economic success.
China has its own history that was not of unity and one government but warring states and constant conflicts for land and power. In that sense, the US is like the speed running nation who got over a couple civil wars and got out relatively ok because of the discovery of certain technologies with the help of rich minds who also pursued entrepreneurship. That economic power lended itself to many things, including towards influencing geopolitics, such as going to Asia to influence foreign political spheres. We still have those brilliant minds to thank for inventions of today, but China did not foster such an environment during those darker years. It was a far more hostile and underdeveloped nation in comparison. Mao did China a favour in the sense that he was ushering in a new age, but his methods were not of the unquestionable nature. Xi happens to be the person who was elected next in line to take power following Mao, by the party members, not the people. In the truest of senses, the communist party was a party for the people, but not by the people. It was by the elite few. Not unlike many regimes today, like that of the US, for a large part.

Easy question, look at Britain at the start of the Industrial revolution, and the US coming our of the depression with Henry Ford et al. all done off of a very low quality of life point. These guys are so busy currently 'holding' the manufacturing flag right now. if you look at post WWII you had Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and now China, both the UK & US are slowly starting to review manufacturing which dropped from 42% GDP to 4% (in the UK) during the last forty years, I think the US was similar. Just think back to when Japanese motor cars first came on the market and where they are today, god product some of which is being produced in China. We live in an interesting world hey?
