Snow Child is awesome especially because the author lives in Alaska and authentically described AK homesteading. I did not find it "fairy tailish" at all. I also think Joel would enjoy the novel.
I love the idea of using a fairy tale or myth as inspiration but grounding the story in a realistic world--so much so that it doesn't feel fairy tale-ish at all. Her upcoming book promises to do the same (and it's also set in Alaska!).
Wow! I would love to go to one of these trade shows! How many other books were there or did you get most of them? 😉 I think I probably would have come away with a different selection than you did, but that’s just because I enjoy thrillers/crime. Along those lines, Fireweed sounds great and I’m definitely interested. Brightly Shining has now been added to my list to pick up in London. Sounds great. I’ve heard great things about Eowyn Ivey, but after hearing the synopsis of the new one, I’m wondering if she will be too magical for me. I’ve added the new Karen Thompson Walker to my list for next year. I haven’t read The Age of Miracles, but I absolutely loved her second book, The Dreamers. Isola and Tartufo also sound really interesting and are now on my list! You’ve definitely encouraged me to read Selamnik next. I’ve had it for a couple of months but needed a push to pick it up. I have also had Private Rites for a while now and it’s one I would definitely like to get to before the end of the year. I absolutely loved Our Wives Under The Sea and would highly recommend it! What a great haul! I take it you took an extra bag with on the plane for all the books you and Joel brought back? 😂
Believe it or not, there were A LOT of books we didn't take! I've gotten a lot of comments about Eowyn Ivey that even though she takes inspiration from fairy tales and myth, you wouldn't know it by reading her books. I almost bought a copy of Our Wives Under the Sea at Powell's but I removed it from my stack when I found the autographed Josephine Johnson. Oh well! And we definitely brought an extra bag just for the books we knew we would come home with--and it was still a struggle getting it all to fit! We had to leave some books behind on the hotel's give-and-take bookshelves.
@ Can’t argue with the choice to take the autographed Josephine Johnson. That’s a find! Such a bummer having to leave a few books behind, but someone will enjoy them. I’ve had arguments with the suitcase/bags a lot trying to fit all my souvenirs in. Last year, I came back with a couple of slightly bashed books because of storing them in outside pockets of my bag. You gotta do what you gotta do!
I almost fell of the treadmill when the bird hit the window 😵😂 What a haul!! And how cool you were able to attend the event. Think I will pick up Snow Child.
Private Rites is amazing. And I didn't know it was a King Lear retelling, maybe I should learn more about that and reread it? It's so good. Good enough to consider that.
I must say I really enjoyed the comment section today. Somehow it triggered a fit of the giggles @KurtAnderson812's comment CRACKED ME UP. I have several books mentioned in the video in my collection and have also had a huge accumulation of books in the past few months. My most anticipated books to get to are Framed by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey and Patriot: A memoir by Alexei Navalny (both nonfiction) and Entitlement by Rumaan Alam. I look forward to your thoughts on Brooklyn. I enjoyed it and preordered the paperback to match my copy of Brooklyn so I continue to wait. I also picked up two of Colm Tóibín's other novels The Empty Family and The Master which I look forward to reading. Be well.
@@marciajohansson769 Marcia, I have many cinnamon bun suggestions but the list would be insanely long so off the top of my head I suggest: “The Maid” by Nita Prose (2022). Molly the Maid discovers a dead body in the hotel in which she works. If you like this book, there are more in the series. “Sipsworth” by Simon Van Booy (2024). A heartwarming story about an 80-year-old widow in England who befriends a mouse.
You haven't yet read Colm Toibin! I feel that both Brooklyn and Long Island are his more 'commercial' books and would therefore rather recommend The Master or The Magician. I have had enjoyment from his earlier novels - The Heather Blazing and The Blackwater Lightship. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts once you embark on this wonderful author.
I loved spending an hour with you! Thanks for the longer video. Adding all cozy, lighter reads to my current TBR. With the election and a kiddo struggling with her mental health, I need all the cinnamon bun books I can get. Reading has been my escape. I will add all the others who piqued my interest to a future TBR when my own brain can handle more serious topics
Please read Fireweed,The original daughter and long Island on priority basis so we can hear your thoughts and can decide whether to put it on my tbr or not....😊
Please read Snow Child! It’s wonderful and I didn’t even pick up on the fantasy until the end. Don’t let the fantasy description turn you off . Thank you for sharing your haul
I didn’t see anything outside when I went and looked later, so hopefully that means it flew off okay. Oddly, it happens a fair amount at our house-but there’s only actually been one or two casualties in all the time we’ve lived here.
I believe it's pronounced Toe-bean from past times when I've looked up videos about it, but I did mispronounce his first name: I think it should be pronounced like column. But I could be wrong!
I assume your bookhaul revisit next year will be a miniseries
😂🤣 I feel like this one probably should have been, too.
Oh my I literally laughed out loud when I read your comment. That is so funny😂😂😂😂
😂🤣😂🤣
This is reason enough to renew my Netflix subscription.😁
😂 😆
Greg, you and Josephine Johnson touched the same book. Your DNA is intermingled!
It hadn’t even occurred to me that she obviously handled the book in order to sign it!

A hour of Greg! Thank you! This will help a lot with my election anxiety! Diving in now!
I'm hoping Greg does an extra long video on election day so I can cope.😄
Happy to help! I recommend getting a cup of coffee or tea. 😉
@@SupposedlyFun Diet Coke and a banana will have to do today.

The Snow Child was fantastic!!!! I am on a mission now to find an arc of Black Wood Blue Sky. Thank you! great video!…especially the bird scare. 🤭
I should note that I did look outside later and there was no trace of a bird, so hopefully it was fine despite the loud noise.
I almost fell of the treadmill when the bird hit the window 😵😂

Sorry to have startled you as well!
Crikey! Because of you, I’ve just filled in my reading calendar from now until the spring!😄

of what year 😜

I kinda love when a book takes inspiration from somewhere but puts such a good spin on it that you could read it without knowing it.
Well done, Greg. Take a breath. Take a NAP!!!
I did feel like I needed a nap at the end of that! But not needing to do any editing made it a lot easier.
🎃🎃🎃📚 I'm kind of interested in how Tartufo reads. Good job.
I’m intrigued by that one, too!
as for long island I am waiting gor number 3. also the second movie
It would be fun if they did another movie.
Epic haul! Super fun!
I’m excited about all of them!

I definitely need to go to birchbark and get Louis’s new book stat!
You must read Colm Toibin a fantastic writer the first book I read from him was The Master a fictional account of the author Henry James
I'm very excited to finally read one of Toibin's books someday!
Oh I have the snow child too (still yet to read)
Greg and Joel, you are in my thoughts and prayers, hope you both are ok.
How about group read? Buddy read? For Snow Child/ Long Island/ …?
I have a lot to get through before I can do Long Island, but I'll probably do Snow Child in November. Anyone who wants to join can!
