This song definitely has universal appeal. Beautifully simple, deep, and the emotion with which he sings reaches deep down. I never knew he existed until today, courtesy of Twang Nation, and I have listened to this song repeatedly throughout the day. Wonderful.
just floors me...so simple and yet so powerful...simple song with deep meaning. This is what music is supposed to be...and KW is a master at his craft.
Hey KW... I say nothin' but "Legend Legend Legend". I was a young teen when I first heard of you in the early 80s. Working side by side with Waylon, Don Williams, Patty Loveless, Garth Brooks... it's an honor to call you an inspiration! Your music still keeps me goin' today brother!
@gottabeshari No problem, glad you enjoyed it! Kevin has a new CD that just came out, too, called A Patch of Blue Sky. Search our channel or website for Music Fog versions of a couple of those songs as well. Hint: if you view on our website, there are links to buy the song/album from iTunes. Quick and easy.
Drop D as stated, Travis picking. the "F" is fingered 3 x O O 1 x, same for "G" chord 5 x 0 0 3 x. D chord is highly muted, 0 x 0 2 3 x. You can see in this video, when he does the F and G chords that his middle and pinky fingers are off the fret board
Sweet. Who are some other great California artists? Garcia, Owens, Baerwald... A little help here for an east coaster... Try "Danko/Manual" by Jason Isbell.
Jason Isbell is great. But Kevin Welch is from Oklahoma.I think I'm misunderstanding you'r post. But the village in nyc is a hot spot for singer-songwriter types. And Nashville used to be.But I moved to nyc.And Nashville went to hell. I guess maybe that's why he moved to Texas.I know his daughter moved out there as I worked with her at wild oats on Hillsborough pike before they ruined it. I went back to visit to see if I'd move back. Because I'll never be a new york city person. But it's looking like I'll be living here,as it's a vortex. You can not leave. And a southern just doesn't fit in here.
Did you finally get it? Drop D as stated, Travis picking. the "F" is fingered 3 x O O 1 x, same for "G" chord 5 x 0 0 3 x. D chord is highly muted, 0 x 0 2 3 x. You can see in this video, when he does the F and G chords that his middle and pinky fingers are off the fret board
I been killing myself, Slow and steady. Killing myself, And I don't know why. I've been killing myself, And I ain't even ready to die. I go to so much trouble, Just to suffer and struggle Work, work, work, Just to hurt, hurt, hurt. I've been walking on a wire, Getting higher and higher. Man I just looked down, Down, down, down. I've been wrapped so tight, I can't sleep at night. Listen to the clock, Tick, tick, tock. Well my dreams won't come, I said my dreams won't come. I've gotta change my ways.
Still love this song after 10 years, and this live recording is by far the best version

A working mans life 8)
I been killing myself,
Slow and steady.
Killing myself,
And I don't know why.
I've been killing myself,
And I ain't even ready to die.
I go to so much trouble,
Just to suffer and struggle
Work, work, work,
Just to hurt, hurt, hurt.
I've been walking on a wire,
Getting higher and higher.
Man I just looked down,
Down, down, down.
I've been wrapped so tight,
I can't sleep at night.
Listen to the clock,
Tick, tick, tock.
Well my dreams won't come,
I said my dreams won't come.
I've gotta change my ways.
