Both Spinks brothers came from less than nothing in the Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis which was condemned around the time of these Olympics. They did themselves and their mother, who raised 8 children on her own proud with tremendous performances in Montreal.
1976 Olympics in Montreal was one the finest hour for American boxing.
Greatest group of American Olympic boxers ever.
This Michael Spinks is really talented.
He might capture the Undisputed Light-Heavyweight Title someday.
He could even be the FIRST Light Heavyweight champion to become Heavyweight champion!
Michael,a reluctant fighter, was beautiful to watch.
Leon was tough, fun and beloved. Both classy guys, kept the drama to a minimum.
Ole Mike Spinks was a Beautiful Fighter to watch.Much Respects to The Legend. 😎👍🏾
Riskiev was an anatomical marvel, to have his testicles at the same level as his navel. Imagine the courage it took to box that way! /s
Peeing must have been a challenge too.....
A rarely talked about all time great,The Spinks Jinx wasn’t no joke.
He was out of gas that was a clean shot
The Soviet fighter was trying to use his head also as a punch, that’s the reason for the referee interrupting; by the way that was a clean strike to the spleen by Spinks!
He knew he was outclassed and that was the only trick he had left. I’m sure that shot hurt like hell anyway.
Exiled to Siberia and never heard from again.
On the contrary, he is a national hero in Uzbekistan
Just like WWII the USSR relying on Uzbeks to fight for them.
@@jackson76724 You are absolutely right ! My Ukrainian grandfather fought alongside with Russians, Armenians, Tartars, Jews .. and many other ethnicities. My question for you. Did African Americans, who fought in WW2, have to use segregated bathrooms just like they did back home?
@@jackson76724not to mention the Lithuanians for there top basketball players.
Leon was considered the leader of the great group. It was thought little brother Michael didn't have enough international experience to medal. He proved them wrong. In all the USA got 4 golds in a year with the Russian and Cuban teams present. The Spinks brothers as well as Howard Davis and Ray Leonard all took home the gold.
5. Leo Randolph
Great fight
That was a clinic
Spinks had an interesting way of guarding his head, he'd put his hands on the side of his head by his ears, with his elbows jutting out. If you think about it, although this is an unconventional way of doing it, it should be very effective, maybe more effective than having your hands in front of your face, especially if you have very long upper arms as he did
What was the ref doing at 2:47? Why stop the action like that?
Uzbekistan king of the box
Why does the ref keep stepping in whenever Spinks is on the attack? Let the fellow swing!
Worst ref ever man
@@omarisawesome1996 Nothing new in international competitions involving Americans.
@@bennyadler5882 Nonsense
Watch Stevenson fights vs American black fighters late in his career.
the international olympic refs are anti American.
The Russian fighter looked like he lost a fight before that one 😂
1st he is not Russian he is Uzbek. Secondly, he was the first champ of IBA in 1974. So, don’t judge someone until you know how he/she is
From tashkent former soviet boxer great to watch
@@IdontknowjusttakeiteasyAnd I'm sure he was a great champ, but he stood no chance against Michael, future World Champion Pro. I'm happy Ruskiev at least has a pension now. Isn't he wheelchair bound?
@@dietpepsivanilla3095 Yeah, Michael was better than him during all rounds! Michael was at his peak! Yes Risking is wheelchair bounded now! Long live to All Champs! They had to go through lots pf hard work and sacrifices.
6:59
This soviet was already heavily battered before the bout
Spinks beats him up? 😂😂😂
Don't think so, but he did have the better punches.
Spinks was raw.
The Russian looked beaten up entering the fight.
The guy was the first Russian bubble head of his country.😂
He's not a russian he's from Uzbekistan tashkent you know nothing😢 and that guy is first IBA champion
I still can't believe how Spinks froze against Tyson. I'm not picking him to win against a naturally bigger guy but he had skills and power that could have given Tyson fits if it would have gone longer. Spinks went his whole career mostly in the driver's seat, not that time! Glad to see him get out and leave us with good memories
Michael just wasnt a natural Heavyweight and Tyson was the real deal, Spinks didnt have the speed or strength to keep Mike off him. Spinks also was a very technical and methodical fighter who took his time. Mike was a killer and started fast in damn near every fight. I think Spinks was intimidated also, i really do. Even if Spinks wasnt intimidated Tyson hit him with some wicked shots that he never came close to feeling in the light heavyweights. Spinks was a great light heavyweight but he was no match for a beast like Tyson.
and you can see how bad the olympic boxing referees are as well!
Michael Spinks with perfectly placed solar plexus shots to the stomach an it was all over Miskiev was getting his ass thoroughly kicked by Michael anyway he was teeing off on this guy, plus dropped him, Oh yea hands down Michael!
It was low but ok. Riskiev also thoroughly whooped his ass the year before so show some respect
Michael Spinks is my favorite boxer ever! What a career he had! I think he is the best light heavyweight ever. Even with his gimp knee, I thought he was going to outbox Mike Tyson when they fought. How wrong I was, but at least he went out on his shield and ended his career with a huge payday.
I dont watch the olympics anymore lsrgely because those great American and Cuban teams are no longer there.
It eas always really exciting to see Tge great foghters of the future do their stuff at a young age
There was a full boat loaded of all the pharmaceutical helpers in montréal port for the special needs of Russian robots as usual.
have to laugh at the Russian near the end as he seems to be suggesting that he lost because of a low blow. That low blow saved his life!!!!!!! As well I think the Russian was given the chance to continue after a time-out. 99% of fighters continue after a time-out, and though the video doesn't clearly show whether it was well be low the belt or on the belt, the Russian had had enough and QUIT
What are you talking about? He didn’t quit, it was a clear low blow and the ref stopped it. He was the first world champion in 1974 as well and one of the greatest boxers of all time. Show some respect to those that did the things that you could only dream of.
@@danielmclean4844 The rules are clear....he has a choice to take a time-out or forfeit (quit). He wasted no time...Quit. Most...apparently not you or the ref, didn't think the punch was low....AND he had been taking a bad beating. For him to whine to the American about a low blow...was simply A bad JOKE.
Russian had that rare anomaly called the abdominal ball-sack.
The Russian looks like he just went 12 rounds with George Foreman before he faught Spinks .
In my opinion, the best light heavyweight ever. An outstanding career as an amateur and as a pro. Top amateur background. Olympic Champion in a golden age of boxing. Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Leonard, L. Lewis... They defeated the top amateurs from the communist countries: cubans, eastern europeans...
Maybe Mike Tyson was unbeatable in those days. But, had Michael survived the very first rounds, maybe he would have outboxed Tyson, and we don't have to underestimate Spinks' power, even in the heavyweight division... Who knows... But we do know just what happened
Archie Moore,Bob Foster ,Roy Jones Jr.
Watching the replay it is obvious that was not a low blow, just bad form on the part of the Risqiyev.
@@user-sr2pm2iq7xI saw 2 body shots and the first one looked low.
The referee is cheating Michael . Every time he is clearly about to knock the guy out , the referee breaks it up .
Fue un robo. Ese golpe fue bajo.
Corey roberts, michael spinks, was the greatest lightheavyweight champion, of all-times.
