Alas, the British took benefit of an internal power struggle, and the entire Maratha navy was burnt down by a faction of Marathas themselves.

The problem for many states in early modern India (and Qing China) was their false sense of superiority.
They indeed inherited illustrious history from their predecessors, and the subcontinent of India was indeed home of many powerful and advanced states/empires, and yet, by the time Vasco Da Gama arrived in India in 1490s, it was clear that the pendulum begin to swing to the West (as stated by the lord of Calicut to his vassals, warning them against aiding the Portuguese), and by 1740s, it was so clear and undeniable that the West had significant superiority in finance, science, and military technology.
Unfortunately, even after string of defeats, many Indian states (and Qing China) choose to cling on their old and obsolete culture/tradition, refusing to learn anything from the West beyond adopting some Western military technique and equipment.
I mean the Japanese was in exact same situation. In 1850s they found themselves completely outclassed by the Western powers. Instead of clinging to their ancient tradition, they choose to humble themselves and adopted Western science, arts, and culture ASAP.
The Japanese had to invent many new words/terms to translate and explain western concept of Economics, Physics, Biology, Philosophy/Ideology, etc.
This mindset serve the Japanese well. They always willing to learn from whoever they deemed as superior, whether the Chinese, the Koreans, the Portuguese, the Dutch, or the Americans.
Instead of blaming the West for Commodore Perry incident, unequal treaties, or the nukes, they choose to learn from the West and work hard to be better than the West.
The worst thing is that the west doesn't teach sbout this, stuff like the bengal famine or the jallianwala bagh massacre (where the british open fired on thousands of peaceful indian protests in a closed space), there is an oscar worthy movie called "Sardar Udham" which revolved around the jallianwala bagh massacre, I would highly recommend that

Actually there is something about rockets being fired by Brits on an American castle in the American national Anthem, those rockets were actually engineered by Tipu Sultan's Army and fended off British attacks on multiple occassions, but when they finally lost, British took over that technology and used it against Americans

Well lemme tell you this there's no history of the world "tragic " than India . There is more history before British colonial rule and there is more things that gonna surprise you how good and advanced Indians were .
There is no such thing as British rule. The term British rule was coined by Western historians. None of the freedom fighters in India before 1947 referred to Britishers as rulers. Anyone who coined the term "British rule" has committed the biggest blunder in history writing and misled millions of people even up to this day. It was simply a British occupation of foreign lands. Britishers were just a bunch of foreign tyrants that should not 🚫 be referred to as rulers but rather opportunists.
Well lemme tell you that you need to do some more reading with a more global scope instead of just making Indo-centric assertions.
India is forgiving but not forgetful, and today's Britons are not responsible for these atrocities. I think people also don't talk about it in the west because indians don't have a victim mentality in general and its contrary of indian culture to keep nagging and we try to look onto the future and the bright side. We were weak and they crushed us, that is the nature of foreign western powers. We are not looking for revenge from those whose ancestors were the culprits. We as a collective world family should keep these horrors in mind so that they are not repeated again to any people or nation.

Portuguese raided a bit more South, towards Maharashtra and Goa. For example, the ancient statues and idols at Elephanta Island, which were used and defaced by them as a target practice for flintlocks.

The whole west & east scenario originates from here, also before British left, they partitioned india on grounds of religion, into india and pakistan, they wanted a state close to the soviets in the future, hence a proxy state with their influence was their top priority, thus originated Pakistan.

When the brits put insane taxes on indian farmers. What hapoened was, indians stopped growing food and started growing cash crops to pay those inflated taxes. By cash crops i mean, cotton, rubber, jute etc. More than 50% of india was only growing cash crops to pay taxes, but you cant eat cotton. Hence the man made famines.
Also all the ship builders, metallurgist became farmers for 200 years. So we lost many of our skills like damascas steel is a lost art. No one even now knows how they originally made it without electricity. Cause those workers became farmers.
Lastly, during WWI. To make up of britians debt, the british sold the taj mahals gold tops and replaced it with brass ones which turn black. Indian govt even now spends a lot of money to maintain it. And the railways were so badly designed, indian govt after independence had to spend a lot of money undoing the railways to meer the demands of its people. Even after independence, Britain kept us poor for 50 years trying to undo the damages they have done. Not to mention they broke our country.

@@elsamathew6335 Its not about the loot. British crown brought civilization to India. They introduced machinery, modern medicine, engineering, education, law and most importantly Christianity.
Before the British India was just a bunch of uncivilized warring tribals. They would worship stones and sticks and burn their women. Without the British influence India would still be in the same situation.
They basically built it to make the systematic looting more efficient. As far as modernisation and education, medicine, law and order are concerned if you go into history of what India has given to humanity you would realise we were the founding fathers for a society with law and order when the west was just hunting for living and wearing animal skins. We invented clothes, mathematics, astronomy, surgical medicine and so much more. The Sanskrit language is mother of all languages. Hinduism is the 5000 years old religion that predates the Christ. So do some educating yourself first
Today India is the strongest democracy and fastest growing nation with nuclear power and state of the art space technology. Despite the British atrocities and if you want to compare might as well look at our neighbour the epicentre of terrorism that British gave us. They too got independence with us and look where are they now. Why aren’t they thriving now if the British gave everything to us they should be thriving too.
