This was one of the hardest things for me to learn growing up as a tabla student. Playing slow, in time, WITH VARIETY is really, really, really, REALLY hard.
He is playing tabla with his fingers, hands, body , emotions, mind and heart.... this is giving YOUR 100%... and when you do that.. you become 1% like Guruji...and when you do this over and over again for 3-4 decades... you become 90% like Guruji.... last 10% is blessing from God....
Priceless advice🙏. Slowing down the pace of a kayda and then placing the syllables before OR after the standard position brings so much new life and beauty to the rendition. There are countless possibilities here and a sincere student can design his/her own patterns and improvise even on the first kayda that is taught in tabla. We need gurus who can expose sincere students to such priceless doors to improvisation.
In Pitman English stenography to build speed later upto 200 words per minute , what the book advises to the student is to ...hasten slowly.... to build slowly and steadily faster, without compromising quality.
For whole of the tabla players community, Ustadji playing tabla is just as important as Sun consuming it's hydrogen reserves to generate energy. Pt. Suresh Talwalkar always says that the Guru must impart energy to students to practice more and more. Ustadji has given that energy, that ray of hope to all the tabla players, that yes, its possible, stay on course. So, without being the teacher for many thousands of tabla players, he is "the teacher" for all of us. Can there be any better connection than this ? Can it be more divine than this ?
There is nothing more divine than the relationship between guru and shishya ...that's why this sloka explains the chronology...mata pita guru daivam ...the mom first shows you the world and also your father then the father and mother help you find your guru and ultimately your gati is daivam that is God . Pure bliss
I love this! Zakirji's lessons about riyaz always the best. Also, as non-native, mediocre Hindi speaker I can really understand his Hindi very well. And I love phrases like "For instance, ek simple cheese hay."
He was asked by one of the teachers as to which rhythm should that teacher make the students practice. He goes on to demonstrate a simple rhythm. He plays that same rhythm multiple times ..and each time he would accent a new part of the rhythm which to the listener would sounda as though he is playing a new rhythm each time. So accents are important. Then he says breaking down the rhythm to various speeds...quarter speed, half speed while practicing is a good idea to fully imbibe and understand the rhythm. So practice slow..from there you cn play around with it. cahnge your accents etc..

Now this god takes dynamic variations into another dimension,.. since I was 18 and I'm 62 now, I hear something new, many things new... EVERY TIME! If he were to share what he knows in one workshop, it would be about 2 years long, 24 x 7 !! He is a miracle. 🙏🏽

Why not Pakistani legends conduct such learning sessions? In 34 years of my life except Ustad Shahbaz Hussain , haven't seen ustad Tari sahab , Jimmy khan sahab, etc doing something like this. This is why India is way far successful in Music and arts industry as compare to Pakistan
It has got to do with the culture that has been developed in Pakistan. Music teachers are too stubborn to talk positively about their contemporary musicians, so as a result Young students are never encouraged to listen to or respect other teachers, players and musicians except for their own lineage. This important factor is very much present in Indian Gurus. They respect each other and the same is transferred to the Shishya. However this important reason is just one reason for India to be way much further in music, there are many many others.
These types of music and instruments are intertwined with the dharmic religions originated in India it's supposed to be a form of worship to the respective gods. Pakistan is too intolerant to allow such musical instruments to be learned and played in their country because of their religion and it's limitations, they'll be happy to open madarsaas for young indoctrination, but won't open gurukuls for cultural studies. in india you'll see a Muslim sitaar player paying his respect to god Saraswati before playing, but doing so in Pakistan would mean death. it's a sad affair but it's catching up on today's india aswell, you won't see sitaar, flute, tabla, shehnai players in the coming generation of Indian muslims, cause they're too busy separating themselves from their ancestral culture cause they'd rather be a martyr then follow the traditions and culture of kufrs
