HealthWorks! Healthy Living Series: Benefits of Exercise
by The Center for Better Health and Nutrition/HealthWorks! at Cincinnati Children's
Bekah Moorhead, Exercise Physiologist : "In this video, I'll be discussing the benefits of exercise. Today, we will be touching base on 5 of them.
These areas include how regular exercise affects your brain (academics and school), the affects it has on sleep, emotional and social well-being, how it affects skin, and exercise and HDL.
Exercise also reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improving insulin sensitivity and decreases blood pressure. A lack of physical activity can lead to a significant increase in body fat, type II diabetes, heart disease and more.
We recommend exercising right away when you get home from school. Just a 20-minute walk will help reactivate, stimulate and energize your brain. This will help with retaining memory and
    quicker learning.
Cardiovascular exercise, like a walk, can create new brain cells and improve overall brain health.
Exercise can improve sleep patterns as well. Exercising reduces stress and makes you tired helping to improve your sleep and quality of sleep. When you exercise more it strengthens your heart (cardiac rhythms). which will help you stay more alert during the day and make you more tired at night.
Exercise can even help improve skin. Moderate physical activity is shown to provide antioxidant protection and helps with blood flow, which can protect your skin and delay signs of aging.
Regular exercise can also improve and increase your HDL levels. Higher HDL levels are associated with lower cardiovascular risk.
There are so many positive aspects to regular physical activity. Now it’s time to start moving."
