It was definitely was more bang for my buck back then I put over 200,000 miles on the car doing multiple cross country road trips free super charging, unlimited mile warranty on the motor and battery. It’s been amazing! Good luck to anybody looking for a used one. It certainly worked great for me. My eight year warranty runs out in a few days. Make sure if you buy a Model S older than 2018 that you check for MCU2 is installed or spend the money to have it upgraded from MCU1 to MCU2. It's well worth it. also, if you buy from 3rd party you still get free unlimited Supercharging. Be aware that those years have had the Supercharging speeds reduced for safety... so they will not charge as fast as newer models, but who can beat free? you can drive anywhere and super charge for free. what other car allows you to go cross country for free?
Fyi you want a 2016 or older for unlimited free supercharging. Early 2017 might have it too but it's something you'd need to confirm. Also, if it's been resold at a Tesla dealership at some point in that time, you won't get the free supercharging. It's only when it trades hand third-party.
My wife has a performance 2023 Tesla 3 which is a great vehicle. I recently bought a 2015 Tesla S 70D with over 100,000 miles in excellent condition. These are 2 different cars. The performance 3 is basically a beautiful sports car - I compare it to our old Subaru WRX STi. The Tesla S is luxury car with a lot more room (more useful space than my 2021 Subaru Outback Onyx). If I was traveling a lot I would go with the S but the 70D does have less range. For pure fun driving and just getting around the performance 3 is a blast. The enhanced autopilot on the old Tesla S (AP1) beats the autopilot on the new 3 hands down. No phantom braking, reliable performance, great lane change function and still has summon feature. Not upgradable but the best Tesla has to offer until they truly get a reliable FSD : )

Here's my experience. In April of 2020 I bought a 2013 Model S85 from the original owner, the main drive unit and main display had already been replaced under warranty. That meant that the car I bought was on it's second drive unit and display (@90K miles). In the summer of 2023 I have began experiencing episodes of the drive unit cutting out during normal driving. Within a year the issue became worse, and by the Fall of 2024 it was happening almost every time I drove the car. So in mid-November 2024 I drove it to the local Austin, TX service center and on the drive there it cut out 3 times. When I got there they said I should leave it with them (without an appointment) because it was a "safety issue". The diagnosis (the same day) was that the drive unit was failing and had to be replaced. My choice: do nothing and have eventual total drive unit failure or cough up the money and make the replacement now. I authorized the replacement~ $6700 (out of warranty). The car has 140,000 miles now and is on it's 3rd drive unit. If I had known that this was a possible issue, I never would have bought the car back in 2020. This may not be typical for all early Model S's, but I was unlucky enough for it to happen to mine. Three (3) drive units in 140,000 miles of normal driving is not my idea of a dependable car.
I bought a new 2015 Model S 85D and I still love it. It still feels tight and in very good condition. Yes, I have replaced a lot of parts around the suspension and door handles and things like that but thats just to be expected after 8 years and 22.000 km. I was about to sell it and replace it with a Model Y (since I cant get hold of a Cybertruck in Europe) but I decided to keep my Model S and just service it and make sure all the parts for roadhandling is in good order. The free supercharger is also a big advantage. The only thing that I worry about is if that the battery breaks down, very expensive to get a replacement. But I have never had any problems with that and the degradation is minimal. If it happens, its now possible to fix the battery instead of replacing it. Mostly a simple error but of course not easy to open and fix, and then seal it again. But I had no problem with the battery yet, so Im keeping it :-)

Crazy price but it was 7 months ago, a model s from 2015 only cost 23 to 26k€ currently in Germany. Only thing that would scare me is the charging time of 1h.
Drop it, tint windows, change wheels, carbon duck tail, fl upgrade with carbon hood and I'm set, it's fast enough, smooth daily and almost zero maintenance besides brakes and wiper fluid
Definitely take my 2015 P85D over a model 3. Granted it is a big car… but 0-60 in 3 seconds is no joke… very roomy and fun to drive. It has air suspension which is a plus in any Tesla…
@@dopeskaterat95 depends. Tesla supercharger, if you are below 20% will charge you to about 50-60% really quickly. like 15 minutes. Once you hit over 50% you get throttled a little. Overall, 20% to 80% is about 40 minutes. At home, you will charge fully overnight with time to spare, and it is also the time that electricity is the cheapest. You will always be fully charged if you overnight charge. It also turns off once it hits the charge amount. It costs about $4 Canadian to go from 20% to 85%(200miles or 320km added)
It’s more likely that that door has been opened up at some point to fix some thing and it just never got put back together right. I actually think the build quality in the early Teslas is better than the build quality now.
Bought my used Model S in November 2023 for $2k with about 90k miles on it. It’s a used car, so a few minor things like scratches and dings, but overall it’s a solid car. I’ve already put about 10k miles on it. Had into the shop to have the rear top glass replaced as it was cracked when I bought it. They loaned me a 2018 model 3 overnight and while it was a fun car with FSD, it just didn’t feel like the same quality to me. The model 3 felt like a nicer version of the Dodge Neon, whereas I feel like the model S is built with more heavyweight materials and I don’t feel unsafe taking it at higher speeds. Would recommend the 2015 model S over a newer mode 3 any day.
in march 24 i sold my 2019 model 3 performance and bought a 2016 model s 70d with 80k km on the clock . ( needed more boot space ) do not regret it at all as i saved alot sold the model 3 for 26k euro (bought used in 2022 for 28k euro ) , gave 10k yes 10k euro for the model S . had to replace 1 door handle harness on the model S so faar but thats kinda expected on those
I plan the exact same purchase. I can't find one thing. If I buy one with Supercharge free will that free charging work on my way from the shop since It will be not written on me yet so I can't register into the Tesla app. I called Tesla and they said that it would not work till I'm able to register with proving ownership, but the operator on the phone wasn't sure he just thought. Why im asking is because I'm planning to go buy a car to the country where they are much cheaper and is around 1000km drive back. So it would be nice if supercharge-free work on that way back.
I should have done more research before purchasing but. I got a 14 model s 60 for it with 45k miles for 22k but wish I did research as the range isn’t what I thought it would be. I thought all teslas were amazing on range but this one sadly close to 200 mile range. Unfortunately no free supercharging but the car is nice. And it does have the two extra seats in the trunk making it a 7 seater but idk who would be sitting there right now as I don’t have any kids haha. But can’t go back on my payment since I am financing the car but hope it is better in the future
We own two and the wind noise is not present in either or our Models. If you are in the market (even way better now), get one (like both of ours) with lifetime free Super Charging. Ask and look into it and make your purchase contingent upon successful transfer of lifetime free Super Charging to you as new owner. We purchased both of ours used and successfully had the free Super Charging transferred. Energy is only going to go up in price...

Without a warranty, they are a $25k Risk, $20k for battery $5k for drive motor. Have a large surplus of cash on hand, if you buy one out of warranty. I expect out of warranty models to get very cheap, very soon(well under $20k). Like Mercedes, great cars but very expensive to maintain out of warranty, so owners dump them cheap. Tesla warranty is 8 yrs.
Out of pure interest, are you an owner of a model S? Have you personally had to change the motor or battery in a model S? Do you know a person (not from the internet, or a friend's friend) who has had to change the battery or the motor in a model S in the past year? As a person considering to buy one, I am genuinely interested to hear are these comments you sometimes see online based on personal experience. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Are you sure you’re clicking the right thing to activate it? Make sure to UA-cam how to activate Autopilot. It took me a bit too There’s two knobs on mine on the left of the steering wheel. I had to pull it forward twice to activate mine
I'm looking at a 2015 Model S 70D. Its got over 80K miles. Whats your battery say for range? I'm going to be using A/C and accessories. I'm not going to be a range geek. My commute is 22 miles each way.
You'll be fine. I have a 2013 S60 and it gets about 175 miles per full charge. My commute is the same as yours and I've had no issue with range for the last 5 years. My car is at 167k now.
I have found plenty of model S for 25k due to it having 100k miles does anything think it’s worth it still? Only going to be used for work & home to save money on gas
Not for $40k not even. Why? The battery. Unless Tesla gives it a new decent warranty, absolutely not. Anyway, right now is the absolute worst time to buy anything of this sort. Car and house prices are / will be crashing. Who knows where the bottom is.
Tesla's are a great price right now especially in the UK because of our energy crisis. Especially if you haggle down on the price 😃 people are picking up a P90DL for £30K! Super car 0-60 speeds for 30K is ludicrous 😜
THANKS SPOKEN,FOR SHARING THIS STORY AND THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS VEHICLE…most of our cars have been 4-5 years old when I purchased them and they were driven a lot over 200k …and they were not a TESLA…SO addressing the issues you mentioned,I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO BUY IT 👍🤗💚💚💚
I had the Models S P85D, never had a worse car in my life. Drove it so carefully and still it managed to get me to the Tesla autoservices 44 times. Changed battery at around 175.000 kilometers beacuse it stoped charging to more than 100 kilometeres range. It said range 502 km. but drove 200 km. Worst car ever.
I can get a local model s85 not d with 60k miles for $16k. Car looks fine. Just not sure about the cost of maintenance and no warranty but claims to have free supercharging. But I heard sometimes the free super doesn’t move over to new owner. Do you know how to find how to test the battery ?
I have a 2016 p90d ludicrous 60k miles with every package available MSRP was 160k+ All I can say is my god is it great. I was looking at a 3 and couldn’t get past the look. The 3 is super ugly to me and I found the build quality poor. Also no odometer yikes. The p90d has enough luxuries for me to feel comfortable and the thick steering wheel is a sport thing, it’s not for everyone but for me it’s a must. I love the space it provides and I don’t get the same wind noise, at all. I find the 3 suffers from so much outside noise especially on the highway. My tech is a little dated but not to the point that it bothers me. My biggest issue is range. My Tesla gets about 410kms per charge and for most things it’s okay but trips god no. No shade at 3 owners I hope y’all love your car but it just isn’t for me. I like luxury cars as that’s all I’ve known and the 3 wasn’t built with luxury in mind which is fine. The 3 is a damn fine car (not looks) but it’s meant to compete with a maxima, accord, sonata etc. so if people are coming from a bmw 7 series, Mercedes, Porsche, even a Lexus will definitely be disappointed. People who care only about tech will definitely be disappointed in a 2015 model S.
Just bought my 2016 model S90 D with only 41,000 miles for only 23,000$ I rented a new model 3 and I had it for 2 weeks I was not a fan it felt fake generic and it was so small compared to the Model S it was not as fast either definitely would never buy a model 3 that's why I went for the S
“My (brand new car) is in the shop and they were *ABLE TO GIVE ME* a (10 year old car)” 🤣 “Before the tax credit (that I may not even receive), I would leave heavy towards the $100k car. But since the tax incentive (which I may not even receive) I would lean towards the $40k car”. 🤣 The hilarious Tesla owner logic shines through, as always.
just about when you made this video. i was in the dealership buying mt first electric vehicle . 2015 Model S with 69000 miles. The dealer really didnt know anything about it. But once i got it home i took it to a Tesla dealership and they looked everything over and gave it a clean bill. i pay less than 30k, and with my broken trade it was closer to 25k. So far i give it 8 out of 10. Simply because they have issues with some features like Summon that dont work as advertised. And from everything ive read, this par for course as updates are continuously being pushed. i do nor regret the purchase but unless battery technology comes down in price, i will likely sell it in two years.

@@WhosinParis it’s cool asf. i’m actually gonna try to trade it in soon tho bc the front two door handles stopped coming in and out. so i have to jam a key into the crack to open it up bc it’s like 1.2k per door handle to fix or sum lol. so imma just trade it in for a newer one. if you can, try to get at least a refreshed 2016 model s or a 2017 fr. i think the new computer came out in 2018 tho so might wanna try for that but if it’s out of your price range try to get at least a refreshed 2016 fr
You can find this era model s used fro. 15k to 20k now. They are worth it from 15k to 30k depending on spec. I prefer the model s a lot to the 3 or Y
Definitely take my 2015 P85D over a model 3. Granted it is a big car… but 0-60 in 3 seconds is no joke… very roomy and fun to drive. It has air suspension which is a plus in any Tesla…
What’s the charge time at a Tesla supercharger or at home with an older model s? Say like 2017 model s.
@@dopeskaterat95good question
2k?! 😅 Where can I get one
He missed a 0
Beautiful car. The question now is, does that 2015 vehicle have hardware to allow FSD?
in march 24 i sold my 2019 model 3 performance and bought a 2016 model s 70d with 80k km on the clock . ( needed more boot space ) do not regret it at all as i saved alot
sold the model 3 for 26k euro (bought used in 2022 for 28k euro ) , gave 10k yes 10k euro for the model S . had to replace 1 door handle harness on the model S so faar but thats kinda expected on those
19k for 2015 model with 92 thousand miles a good deal? Model 70D
But can’t go back on my payment since I am financing the car but hope it is better in the future
how long does it take to fully charge?
Is the center console after market? I bought one, but it doesn’t have anything in the middle. It’s just a rail. 😂
What do you think about maintenance?
What is the range now on a full charge?
We own two and the wind noise is not present in either or our Models. If you are in the market (even way better now), get one (like both of ours) with lifetime free Super Charging. Ask and look into it and make your purchase contingent upon successful transfer of lifetime free Super Charging to you as new owner. We purchased both of ours used and successfully had the free Super Charging transferred. Energy is only going to go up in price...
You can easily find a 2018-2019 used Model S for 40k bro... dont go that old for that price
Where can i find those with that price?
Yeah but it’s only the 75D trim and don’t even have 300+ miles to a charge
@@Ozzz77118 Just google it man
@@Khaled-eo9mr not true, I literally just found 2018 model S 100D with 20k miles on it for $46k lol. Just do some research online. (It won’t let me link it here for some reason)
@@xdae Depends on your budget brother, if you can afford 40k id take that due to how many improvements are made from model to model with tesla. 3 years of innovation means a lot!
Do you get free supercharging for it? Your model S is 70D right?
Thank you in advance for your reply.
exactly the dilemma I'm in right now, not to mention winter conditions are around the corner...
I train Jiu-Jitsu with a teammate that drives a 2015 Model S at 160k miles, still original battery !

I’ll take the S over the 3 and Y. I like to do a lot of long distance Interstate traveling. I want more room and it has a longer wheelbase.
How many hours do you drive per day? The slower charge times might drive you crazy.
Hope someone can reply to this…but did this car have or come with basic autopilot? I just bought one…but it’s not working and I have all the hardware
Are you sure you’re clicking the right thing to activate it? Make sure to UA-cam how to activate Autopilot. It took me a bit too
There’s two knobs on mine on the left of the steering wheel.
Looking at a 2016 X 75D for 29K with 55K miles.. might go for that rather than the P85D I was looking at.
I have found plenty of model S for 25k due to it having 100k miles does anything think it’s worth it still? Only going to be used for work & home to save money on gas
If you don't need to charge fast, it's a great option
How about this car today for $25-30k vs a 3 year used camry for the same. ???
Does it have free supercharging
Not for $40k not even. Why? The battery. Unless Tesla gives it a new decent warranty, absolutely not. Anyway, right now is the absolute worst time to buy anything of this sort. Car and house prices are / will be crashing. Who knows where the bottom is.
Tesla's are a great price right now especially in the UK because of our energy crisis. Especially if you haggle down on the price 😃 people are picking up a P90DL for £30K! Super car 0-60 speeds for 30K is ludicrous 😜
The battery out of warranty is a huge risk. Degradation will result in failure any moment
THANKS SPOKEN,FOR SHARING THIS STORY AND THE PROS AND CONS OF THIS VEHICLE…most of our cars have been 4-5 years old when I purchased them and they were driven a lot over 200k …and they were not a TESLA…SO addressing the issues you mentioned,I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO BUY IT 👍🤗💚💚💚
Had to find out. There's a 2016 with around 70k miles with lud+ and autopilot for $26k. Yeah think I'm going to snatch it.
How much u think 2020 model S longe range plus going for with 25-30k miles
I had the Models S P85D, never had a worse car in my life. Drove it so carefully and still it managed to get me to the Tesla autoservices 44 times.
Changed battery at around 175.000 kilometers beacuse it stoped charging to more than 100 kilometeres range.
It said range 502 km. but drove 200 km. Worst car ever.
I am thinking of getting one possibly I t he future
I can get a local model s85 not d with 60k miles for $16k. Car looks fine. Just not sure about the cost of maintenance and no warranty but claims to have free supercharging. But I heard sometimes the free super doesn’t move over to new owner. Do you know how to find how to test the battery ?
Cap
@@britwit8734 nah it’s true the old models go for cheap
Just bought one with 71k miles. Great condition
So you think
I have a 2016 p90d ludicrous 60k miles with every package available MSRP was 160k+
All I can say is my god is it great.
No odometer? What are you talking about?
the model 3 has no screen behind the steering wheel. its just empty space.@@mattl7967
Not even a year later and I’m considering getting a 2015 Tesla model S 60 $14,000 wow so much for 40 K
“My (brand new car) is in the shop and they were *ABLE TO GIVE ME* a (10 year old car)” 🤣
“Before the tax credit (that I may not even receive), I would leave heavy towards the $100k car. But since the tax incentive (which I may not even receive) I would lean towards the $40k car”. 🤣
The hilarious Tesla owner logic shines through, as always.
You talk like elon himself. 😂 Is that you???
Only buy tesla with powertrain warranty.
I would
not want that small tesla 3
🗣 YES.
You complain that's loud, I drive a fucking Renault Clio of 2001 and I think it's more than fine
just about when you made this video. i was in the dealership buying mt first electric vehicle .
