I honestly love these phat ps3s, I’ve been eyeing out a brand new (never opened) 20gb backwards compatible launch PS3 the past few days, idk, I might actually get it soon if it’s still there in a few months.
The original fat boys are nice looking but note that they had problems with the chips on the board and cause the yellow light of death. No matter what you do it will likely happen. Not to mention, if you buy a new one now you will have to crack the case and put new thermal paste on the chips as the paste itself at this point will be drying up.
For the record I faintly remember feeling like I saw a ps3 in walmart on the shelf but feel it was a ps3 slim with an sd card slot on the front right side with no door on it but fwiw it mistve been a ps3 fat or else a blue ray player/dvd player so whatever but yeah that does make sense... and I wanna say it was only from either 2008 or 09 onwards
I recently picked one of these up for dirt cheap, opened but never used and it was awesome just seeing it raw with no damage, what a beauty. It was actually very similar to this! Component cables were sealed, controller was perfect and not a single scratch on the console.

Still have my 80GB software/hardware backwards compatible PS3 my console have the PS2 GPU but not the CPU. I have been able to keep my console looking good by only having a GOOD QUALITY Micro fiber cloth touching it ONLY, to me the PS3 phats is probably the best looking console to date. I have two controllers and they both still have there orginal batteries and still hold a charge the key is to always keep it charged with two bars dont fully charge or let them die...they are lithium ion batteries. I bought a new LG OLED TV and hooked the PS3 to it and my goodness ALL PS3 games look better then they ever did before, this have to be my favorite console of all times.

I have a white phat PS3 I bought in late 2008. It worked until 2016, then it got the dreaded YLOD. Still looks beautiful though. I wonder if I can revive it.
I got the Japanese PS3 which it is the original launch model that has the backwards compatibility with the PS2 and the support of the Super CD format. But this PS3 only plays Japanese PS2 and PS1 games but if you have digital PS1 and PS2 games bought from the PlayStation Store then you can play them but if you put your PS2 and PS1 games not from the region that the PS3 is from it won't work but you can play PS3 games from any region because that is region free just like the Blu-ray movies or TV shows. But not the DVD's unless they are region free DVD's like the Looney Tunes collection DVD's. That's great that the PS3 you have gotten has the Folding @ Home but not PlayStation Home because if you have PlayStation Home then you can donate the data from the PS3 to the Destination Home team to make a complete experience of PlayStation Home.

Typically these models from cechh to cechp have the ylod due to the nec/tokens, which is a very easy fix as you just need to swap them with tantalums. The very first ones might have issues with their gpu but if you take good care of them and make sure they have low temps, they can last a long time.
Not if you do some preventative maintenance. Install fan mod, remove CPU and GPU heat spreaders. I love these consoles. Play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. If you think the graphics are not good on those games, we do not play them for the graphics. These games will work past the current games no online dependent, no updates required. Great game play that is it.
If I ever find another brand new ps4 down the road one day I'm going to do that honestly ps3 was good but I love ps4 my fav consoles of all times are genesis n64 ps2 and ps4

I bought 3 ps3 all of them don’t read any disc leds has a low life span. So use use it just to play the PlayStation home and that shuts down. Back then online gaming was free. From that point PlayStation disappointed me. I think the PlayStation 3 is a scam disc don’t read right after warranty is expired.
This Console become more more worth , they are no more produced so they will end some day ! Only Tec Enthusiast will able to fix such Consles . Thanks also to the Emulation Tecnology Games will be preserved !

But Sony let it use only for Digital Purchased Games PS1 PS2 Classics, and now todays Sony has even Removed this PS2 and PS1 Digtial Games!! they Delisting it day and every Day less on PSN .

However I'm definitely planning on keeping the console. It works fine, isn't loud and even if it dies it will look really nice up on display in the game room 😅
