The greatest love of my life, my husband, who died far too long ago, dedicated this poem to me and now it always makes my cry because it reminds me of his love for me.
Robert Burns, like so many of the great and mighty poets and artists, taken too young like so many of these great singers of his immortal songs, stirring a love for the Scottish highlands even for those of us who have yet to visit...
O my Luve's like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve's like the melodie That’s sweetly song in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry: Till a’ the seas gang dry, my love, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun: I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee well, my only Luve And fare thee well, a while! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.
Agreed! I learned more from Andy than I ever have elsewhere. He taught me that folk signing involved accompanying yourself. We shared a few stories in the Bon Accord bar in Glasgow, and he was the embodiment of humanity and decency. In the Bard's words ... I will love thee still my dear, 'ere the sands o' life shall run? If only we had Andy to sing it for us today ...?
He didn't technically write it. it already existed in scottish folk culture, and he, more or less, popularized it (by publishing it) and made it a symbol of their independence from the politically dominant england.
@@koalateacontent5094 You have it in reverse. Robert Burns wrote the poem, and then later published it as a song loosely using an already-existing Scottish folk tune. It is with the same respect as Scots Wha Hae, only that tune Tuttie Tatie is far more ancient and can be traced back at the very least to 1314.
This is by far the best version I’ve heard and it’s also one of my favourite songs. Brings back happiest memories of my children when they were small and my parents when my my Mum was alive.
beautiful picture show to accompany the song. simply wonderful. Andy with his great Robert Burns appropriate voice and the nice background accompaniment.
Happy birthday Rabbie, only 37 short years on this planet, yet in another 200 your name will still be honoured. The ploughman poet that taught the world rank means nothing, that we're all brithers. Thank you.
I first fell in love with Robert Burns music when I was twelve and read this poem in English Literature class. In college, PBS had a couple singing many of his songs at the end of Masterpiece Theater. I fell deeper in love with his words and music. A close friend, who has a beautiful tenor voice, sang this at our wedding.
This song was listened for the first time in English class when I was a freshman student. Even after so many years passed, I am still so easily touched by its sweet melody and deep feelings of the lyrics… also sang by singer with such a beautiful voice … will last forever in my mind…
Aye the love of poetry runs in the veins of all Scotts throughout the free world as Robbie Burns lives in the music he wrote. Sung by another proud Scot in Andy Stewart...
O my Luve is like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June; O my Luve is like the melody That’s sweetly played in tune. So fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry. Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun; I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only luve! And fare thee weel awhile! And I will come again, my luve, Though it were ten thousand mile.
Looking forward to celebrating yet another Burn's Supper tonight. Best wishes to all my friends in Scotland who will no doubt be doing the same. It's " Rusty Nails " all round for me. ( Drambuie + Single Malt ) Thanks for this wonderful tribute
I pray to the gods of Heaven and Earth that this song will remain with us until the sun grows cold. Hearing it for the first time made me weep with longing, longing for that true, that eternal love that we all desire yet so few ever find. Robert Burns, I salute thee!
Then let us pray that come it may, (As come it will for a' that,) That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth, Shall bear the gree, an' a' that. For a' that, an' a' that, It's coming yet for a' that, That Man to Man, the world o'er, Shall brothers be for a' that. Robert Burns , my hat and heart are tipped your way. How I wish you had lived 100 years ,the more to fill our world with your breathtaking Scottish words of wonder !!! Albainn gu brath
I have always loved Robert Burns works and love reading the history of the man. Thank you for posting this video. I agree Burns makes me proud to be a Scot.
*shocked* i absolutely love the singer, the poem and the music...such wonderful combination ^^thanks Ms Uhlenhopp for your class in English history yesterday :)
This is a lovely song, and beautifully put together. Its nice to hear a version that sticks to the melody. Im trying to learn this song and Im glad I heard this version.
I love hearing this sung the way it should be. As someone from the land of boring accents (US), it's lovely to hear this song. And it is one of the best love poems/songs ever written.
When Andy Stewart or Dougie MacLean sing a Robert Burns song, we learn why these songs have lasted so long. I never had any idea how beautiful a song "Auld Lang Syne" was before I heard MacLean's version. -jcr

I am moved to tires when I read your message
May his soul rest in eternal peace.... Till a' the seas gang dry 😞😞😞
He is with you. He never left. His love enwraps you and when you dream of him, he is with you. You will meet again.

Rest in peace Mr. Stewart such talent will not soon be forgotten.
Andy was inducted posthumously into the Scottish traditional music hall of fame on 3 December 2016.
It's a shame it was posthumously. Andy Stewart is the embodiment of Scots vocal music!!

The most beautiful love song ever written, composed by a genius. ROBERT BURNS.
He didn't technically write it. it already existed in scottish folk culture, and he, more or less, popularized it (by publishing it) and made it a symbol of their independence from the politically dominant england.
As far as all I've read of Burns he wrote Red, Red Rose.
Burns wrote the POEM. It was a POEM. It was turned into a song (with a chorus, because the poem only had the stanza once) by "modern-day" musicians.
@@koalateacontent5094 what utter nonsense.

‘Though lovers be lost, love shall not,....and death shall have no dominion ‘.......Dylan Thomas
Beautiful and heartfelt are barely enough.

In the Commonwealth group that I once drank with, Rusty Nails were called Jock's Traps.
I was touched to this song.
Rabbie Burns and Andy Stewart are a perfect match, the Poems and the VOICE....
Love this. I remember learning in college that so many Burns' poems were written to be sung.
I pray to the gods of Heaven and Earth that this song will remain with us until the sun grows cold. Hearing it for the first time made me weep with longing, longing for that true, that eternal love that we all desire yet so few ever find. Robert Burns, I salute thee!
