My husband been a logger for 30 years expert to the very tip..he approves your tree falling Jay..I watch off grid with Doug and Stacy..we have shopping containers but for storage only..we did a shed going to build a log cabin and this one will be for guests .I love you guys
Good stuff.....storage containers used for storage.....love it
that video of the dog stealing the bread was great! Kool windows for sure!
It’s coming along very nicely just like you said no need to impress anyone or say you are an expert from what I see you are building it just fine. On a side note I have been a builder for almost 30 years I have built hundreds of houses done just as much siding if you have any questions about framing just ask I’ll give you the best advice I can. Keep the videos coming I love watching them
Jay thank you for been honest on what you do and don't know I hate when people lie.
Looks good you two! I agree the build is much better than a container or a prefab. Plus the gratification of knowing its by you.
It’s called ‘bolting’. Nothing like your own harvest for dinner!😍🇨🇦
The windows look great, and fit like a glove! Enjoy seeing the progress.
It looks great and much better than a shipping container. Enjoy your videos .
If you watched Tiny Shiny Home doing their goat barn you’ll be even more convinced shipping containers are hard work and expensive. You’ve got the right idea!😍🇨🇦
Jay the wraparound windows and doors you cut wrong you supposed to cut at diagonal from corners to mimiddle and it will wrap around the jams and then the tape prevents any leaking they have a lot easy videos to help make nice covering any air gaps don’t forget drip edges along the top of door and windows keep any water and air gaps nice work so far
Tape the bottom of the rough window opening then after window is installed you tape the two sides and then the top. The bottom protects the wood sill but lets accumulated moisture to drain out.
Just want to start by saying that I really like the both of you. You're my people !! I'm with u on the shipping container structures. Waaaaay to much work. But having said that, I'm a single grandma and do all my maintenance & building myself. This fall I'm going to finally build a platform for the tote like the several y'all have. It's only been sitting in my yard for 2 summers. And then of course connect it for harvesting rain water for my garden. Then "next" fall, as in next year, I'm going to be building a 12 x 12 tool shed. We don't need to pull permits for that size. Anything bigger, we would. I'm enjoying your build & taking more notes mentally. Great job so far. Oh, and I'm going to b trying my hand at a dry pour concrete project. Never knew it was a thing until I watched y'all do yours.
Single Nana doing some interior upgrades. Taking it slow and measuring twice. Good luck on your projects. 😍🇨🇦
Your way is best. More affordable and easy to add on.
Another cracking vlog guys. Keep 'em coming. Be well and stay safe.
Woot woot buddy. Appreciate ya.
Hello, put your tape across bottom and six inches up the side of window,it acts as a water barrier to keep it out ,then add windows and tape around it.
😊👍
Have to laugh ☺☺ at the dynamics of two strong minded individuals - keeping each other on yours toes !! Smart cabin / Sugar shack / Storm hold 💕👍👍 -V
We have been in a 1960 built 2400 sq ft house we bought 38 years ago dirt cheap compared to it's current value. We have had a boat and or camper the entire time, however, if we were to want a cabin we would do as "Life Uncontained" did for their home and mountain cabin, convert shipping containers into whatever size we want. I have watched them go from a few hundred subscribers to over 1.5 million while building a beautiful home, a family, and a cabin. I don't remember their costs, but a whole lot of folks are interested in it all...
I like your he she shed, you doing everything right and living life to the fullest,& you can tell you two are very happy together. Freedom
I loved the comment on the house wrap! That’s what professionals told me to do. We do a lot of diy and do it very differently than some. We have paid “professionals” and had to redo it.
It's so true....and they do it differently all over.....so it's hard to know
Your garden looks great! Good progress on the cabin!
Thanks buddy
I think building it yourself is the best way to go. My cabin I built over the pass 5 years and me my son and I have been building his place for the pass 6 months.
Nice
Love watching your progress on the cabin. Looking good!
Thank you!
You guys are doing a great job even if you aren't professional i think the way you are building the mini cabin is great!😊
Awe....thanks Shirley
🎉Thank you for another great video!🎉
I am so proud of Jen - she is finally, kicking you OUT!! - Butt, you will have a doghouse to go to at least, she was that nice!!! LOL :-) (Pick!!! Pick!!!!) Would love to see some very general cost break downs for the different build styles, out there.
Thank you Jay and Jen 👍🏻 God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you always my friends 🫶🏻Stay safe and take care! 🙂
You too my friend
Looks great guys, very well done.... welcome new friends, have a blessed day
food //outstanding
Nice job guys , hey Jen my wife, said your haircut looks great . ❤.
Thank you!! 😁 😊😊😊
Diyfferent is a great UA-cam channel to watch and learn from if you haven’t watched
I have seen a few posts by them. Thanks for letting me know. 😀👍
Awww, I'm so happy that you're getting more subscribers. I've been praying that you guys would. You're making progress!!! Looking better and better every video. Thanks for showing us that power station. I meant to tell Jen that I liked her flowers in her last video.
We appreciate you so much. Thanks for making us smile 😃 😊
Groovy. I think the containers have their benefit as to strength to holding up to the elements ... It is like comparing types of vehicles .. but the use and needs the factor. In your case and my own, I make the small structures .. cost effective..
Good points buddy
Love and enjoy your videos Jay. May the lord bless and protect you and Jen. Working on the homestead and cabin
Thank you! You too!
Looks great! Loved to hear how many hours you end up putting into this build. Another type of shelter to compare is the arched cabins. I know a 12 x 12 is a little over $4000 but that does not include the base you decide to put it on, the two side walls, any doors or windows.
Oh....that is a good one. What are those called? They have a name
Those windows are lovely guys, I love sash windows this is going to be a very cute looking cabin, I would rather have something like what you’re building than a shipping container, they don’t appeal to me at all, it looks like Scout really enjoyed that blueberry sourdough bread too Jen lol, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧
We agree!
I'm Fairly New Here!
We noticed buddy........appreciate ya being here. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Lots of older videos if you want to see the nonsense that led up to today's nonsense. 😊
Great job 👏 🎉
Also, in regards to shipping containers - especially for homes, people never realize air movement. They don't breath, like a wood structure, so rotting and mold are an issue.
Love the windows 🪟
I love the cabin. Great job!🙂👍🇨🇦
Great video guys. Coming along nicely.
Thanks buddy
Shipping containers make great water tight storage units. You quoted a price for the container but they charge for moving it to your location. The building will be easier to make habitable
Looking good my friends! How many actual generators do you guys have now? LOL
However many they have, I'm sure they're going to need them and more, lol!! It's always better to have enough then not enough.
We have found some of them new homes.....but we would like to start sharing more
@@OffgridwithJayandJen you are the generator king of reviews 😂😂
@@kristingrounds4163 lol.....I'm ok with that title. 😊👍
OK, I do agree with you. It is much cheaper to build yourself although you’re gonna have to calculate your time and labor! I mean your times were something as well.
Very very true.......and agree fully. Good point
I agree shipping containers make no sense as anything other than a storage shed.
People don't understand it takes more work to convert one than to just build a cabin from scratch.
Love the off grid
Awesome and productive fiddle forten around Sunday!😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾
Glad you enjoyed it too Martha 😊 😀 ☺️
Hi love ❤️ the new windows 😘 xxx
lol… “he’s not a good tipper” I don’t understand the container trend either, for us it usually takes three times longer to finish a project and shipping containers look like a lot of work! Definitely not for us! Hope you guys have a great week! 😀🍁
The deck board is attached to the bldg.Gun nails are hard to see. They are doing fine. As far as the wrap they also did the wrap like most people do. It was one whole piece.Keep up the good work guys. I still would like to see stain on the house.
Thank you Sheila.....we will try and get some protection on the cabin.
Nothing but progress!
Looking good Guys, keep after it!!!
Nice job guys and can’t wait to see the roof go up.
Windows looks so nice. Great job.
Personally I like stick built quality, and shipping containers to me are for storage off grid, just my opinion. Shed to house is fine if you don’t have the carpentry skills or your in a time crunch! 👍❤️🙏🏼
Great point!
Awesome job guys !!!!! 😊🙏👍❤️

Jay if you still have problems with the mice try using mothballs or coyote urine, that's what we do and it works
Yeah windows 😎.
Nice work on the tree felling.
Thanks buddy
shipping containers is good in very bad storms //that are deadly //as the cement 7 inch cement pile into 5 feet in the ground with heavy chain in side the center of cement let dry //then over the top to hold down to keep in any Tornado ..they hold -up and in any Hurricanes , is safer then stick build //have a nice day ,
You guys do what you do so well,Why even consider a container.l liked Jay's comment as to trying to please everyone else.Im not overly concerned about everyone's opinions either.Keep up good work😊
Woot woot......we are who we are right?
Yes, your garden looks amazing!! I’ve been trying to grow broccoli for four years now and nothing ever turns out… It always completely bolts before you even see a sign of broccoli🤷♂️🤷♂️
It is hard for some reason. Years of trying here too, and this is the first time it worked out.
Love the videos!! Great job.
You are doing a good job.
Moving along on the build very well. Where did you get that Farmer Jack shirt Jay. I used to work there when I was a kid.
Jen bought me a few of them years back. My dad worked there for 40 years before they went out of business and he retired.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen , I haven’t seen one of those shirts in a very long time. There was a farmer jack two miles from my house. I used to ride my bike to work. The good ole days when life was less complicated. Cool shirt Jay.
Need cut that wrap like a X then wrap that material around the frame
I have tried it a few ways.....this "I" shape seems to work well....long as you use window wrap on the bottom
Just do it your way that's how ya learn.
Hi Guys, keep up the good work, have you checked out Kruegers fish market yet?
Thanks for the videos! I’m planning on buying some property up in the U.P. Within the next ten years or so and plan to build a small 1000sq ft ish summer cabin and wondering what is your experience with building permits, codes, etc? Thanks again. I’m really enjoying the channel.
If you're in a good township then you should be just fine. Your size will be good too. Lots of people on YT say to go to township before you buy land and meet the people.
....this will help you gauge what kind of problems you might have
By my account , you probably have a couple of used slightly new solar generators just sitting around . I would love to buy one from you ! thank you Sam
There are a few laying around. 😀
Jay is a good fellar😊
😊 thanks buddy. I'll go to sleep smiling now. Woot woot
Was just wondering if you were going to insulate the inside and decorate before the doing the roof....lol
Ha.......we are getting that roof done today. We are already half way there 😊
Professional tree feller! 😂 nice guys! I agree that building from scratch is the best way. We'll probably get a container for quick storage. We have to rent one anyway to keep our furniture in for shipping up to the cabin. May as well buy it!
Smart......didn't know you could rent to buy....kinda cool
when you build it your self you could customize the way you use it for
So true and an awesome advantage
Way to go Jay! nice work felling the tree. That is a great price for your build up to date . I like shipping container homes But like you said you have to cut out window areas , insulate and frame the inside and so on , it would defiantly cost more . you two are sweet when you disagree lol. Sneaky Scout lmao. Those windows look lovely , I have those in my house I find i have to lube the track . wont be long now folks.
Thanks Sue...Z 👍 appreciate you
Check and see if you can eat the leaves of the Broccoli plant. They look like they would be.
Broccoli leaves are delicious and nutritious! You can dehydrate them and grind them for longer storage life. The powder makes great cream of broccoli soup!🎉❤
Then use the seal tape over that
What are you going to use this cabin for? Are you heating it with wood stove?
Lots of things. Laundry, baking, sugar shack, guest cabin and more. Not sure how we are heating it yet
Question, with the shipping container once it's done inside would it not sweat in the winter time when you heat it?
Yes....many folks have that problem. Part of why I don't understand the whole thing, lol
Love your videos and you do great work as novices. MI native who ❤ to keep a connection. One thing I dont get tho is why are you building a cabin so close to your cabin? Is this like a she shed or something?
She shed, he shed, we shed, mini cabin, guest cabin, laundry room, baking area, sugar shack, and more. We are excited about it
❤😊
Superrrrrrrrrrrr die Fenster
You all are hired... when I win the lottery...
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your deck boards are not on correctly . They should be attached to the Building . They are not going to hold up long term. Did you watch Bush Radicals video on this cabin build. The Easy Way Out and cutting corners create headaches for another day. Short cuts equal long term problems.
I did them this way on purpose. Didn't want them to use the rim joist for their support. But could be done that way too
We just bought one. But for secure storage, not to live in.
Smart
🖐😎👍
Woot woot
you need chickens and sheep go go //have fun//---- I need to see your high out put water pump with 2 1/2 inch hose //as a hot wild firer jumps over a 1/4 MILE OR MORE //, so clear more trees //if any wild firer comes your way and the right wind ..you have no time .have that high out put pump on the ready to stay safe .
👍💗💗🤗
you shaved looks good
Ha....it normally gets hacked when the heat gets to me......😀👍
seal up windows from this old house //watching this old house //the old Tommy DOES ALL WINDOWS RIGHT //THE OLD MAN CALLED Tommy he seal to keep water run off so nothing get behind his job . look him -up Tommy .I think ?
😂 *Bolting ie. Going to seed.😂
Jay.. :49 mark. TRIM SOME branches. TOO much shading.. losing sunshine\PV power. Yuck on the broccoli. Never have liked the taste or the texture of it. Containers are relatively simple. They are already dried in with a roof, walls and a floor.. just measure for windows.. and cut. insulate with spray foam. Cut some holes for plumbing and electrical.. add some framing and sheetrock.. install some cabinets and a mini split.. and they're mobile too.
Good points
Shipping Containers are dumb you still have to build a house inside.
double the cost
Do it your selfers always over build.
Wo ist euer 2 Hund den sehe ich gar nicht mehr
It’s called ‘bolting’. Nothing like your own harvest for dinner!😍🇨🇦
Ahhhh.....thank you.....I knew I was wrong, lol
