Not only can I not recall ever seeing a Rygar arcade machine I also had no idea just how many other home console systems existed in the 80s and 90s. Some of that could have been from where I lived and lack of access to electronics and gaming stores. If Wal-Mart, K-Mart, K.B. Toys and Sears didn't have it then I was unlikely to know they existed unless I read a video gaming magazine, which I unfortunately also never read any of until about 1991. One of the best gaming experiences i had was when i first figured out how the NES version worked. Something just clicked and I played for hours until i finally beat it. Thanks for the walk down memory lane yet again.
Aged about 12 I used to walk home from school and a small newsagents shop had a Rygar arcade machine in the corner that I would play every day. Over time I began to get further and further into the game until one day they had swapped the damn thing for some crappy overhead shooter. I never went in the shop again in protest 😆
@buck3366 How dare he swap out Rygar?! Those were the days, when your local newsagent contained arcade cabinets 👍 They were also popular in takeaways and minicab offices, weren't they. My local kebab shop had a Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja cabinet. On a Friday night we'd order a single portion of chips and a couple of cokes and spend hours playing, until the post-pub crowd staggered in and would inevitably have a punch-up while waiting for their Donner kebab and cheesey chips 🤣

Basically any place where drunk people will congregate you find arcade cabinets and gambling machines, such as one armed bandits and quiz games. When the drunkards aren't fighting, or getting a clip round the ear in the back of a Paddy Wagon, business owners will try their hardest to depart them from whatever cash they have left while their inhibitions are diminished 🤣
I absolutely loved this game in the Arcade~! I have the Playstation2 version but haven't played it much. I gave all my old consoles to my daughter so she's enjoying them now. Thank you, Patman, for this great review of a great game.
I enjoy the arcade version, but the NES is my favorite version, especially since if you use emulation, you can actually save states. Both rank high in my book.
I would argue that that is not the NES version then since the actual cart doesn’t have save states. You can find an arcade emulation with save states too.
I Love Rygar - one of my all-time favs! I used to consider this a perfect representation of what an arcade game is. I also was fond of the NES version. I got it as a kid because I liked the arcade but was surprised by different gameplay. I forged through it and came to appreciate it when it was all said and done... a nice story line version.
Thanks for uploading this! This game ate SO many of my quarters when I was young. Great game! It really was one of the first games in the arcade that completely hooked me like that. A real adventure! We had this pharmacy in the the city I grew up in, and the lady that worked every day would leave a quarter on the machine for me. The NES version is still one of my favorite old school games, too, but the arcade version was magical.

Dude, try the actual arcade version by downloading MAME. I bought a PS4 when they first hit the shelves, but last year I got a bespoke retro console with all the classic 8 and 16 bit systems preloaded, as well as MAME! I haven't touched the PS4 since lol

I was thinking about getting something like that... does it hook directly to the TV or is it something you have to use on a computer? I'm not much of an online gamer, as I tend more to enjoy a good solid story and the challenge of collecting all the extra content, Easter eggs and expansion packs etc. It's one reason I loved Just Cause 3, the Resident Evil remasters and GTA. But nowadays developers simply don't care about campaign and single player models! Look at Star Wars Battlefront, Battlefield and COD, so many of the releases are simply just online multiplayer affairs, complete with all the rip-off loot crates, bugs, server downtime, and idiots who dont play fair. I'd definitely reccomend a retro console. Mine is completely plug and play. It's housed in a copied N64 case, has the four cotroller ports, wifi support to download new emulators and ROMs, with two very ergonomic digital gamepads, a mouse for games like Operation Wolf and Time Crisis, and the only cables are a DC for the power and a HDMI for the rear of the TV or monitor. Mine has 16,000 games on it, from all the original Ataris to PS1 and arcade games up to the late 90s. You can also get some pretty sweet handhelds which have anywhere upwards of 500+ games. They don't tend to have MAME, but have Capcom CP1 and CP2 and most of the classic 8bit and 16bit systems. Need any advice or suggestions please dont hesitate to ask 👍
Rygar. I have never forgot that name. I loved playing this game on the Nintendo as a child. I never beat the game, but always wanted to go back and do it. I never knew it was an arcade first. As a kid I just thought they made games for NES or Sega consoles. Man, you have changed the way I look back on things. Like always You Rock! (Rock)*( On! )

@Louis York Forgive my ignorance Louis (I'm British) but what exactly is "Biscuits and Gravy"?? I've heard of it before, but never got the chance to ask someone what it is actually like! In the UK Biscuits and Gravy would be thick meaty stock (which we pour over cooked meat, potatoes and vegetables) poured over sweet biscuits (which you guys call cookies and we dunk in our tea 😋) and would be particularly foul lol
I mainly played the NES version, though I did get a couple of tries at the arcade version once. I wanted to play the PS2 version, but I never could find it. I didn't start buying games online until a few years later. A note about the music for the NES version. The very first two areas seem to have songs that are written to go together. They remind me a great deal of the action cartoons that were popular in the 1980's and earlier. If you can find the music for the two levels, imagine this with me: The cartoon intro starts, and the first area music is playing. A narrator begins setting up the cartoon. "In a world controlled by an evil dominator, people have lost all hope! That is, until a hero from Argus came to save the day! He, and his trusty disk-armor, are all that stands in the way of the Dominator's complete control! Intruducing, RYGAARRR!" Once that sequence is over, the music for the second area plays, and it shows different scenes from the cartoon. I dunno. Maybe it's just me. :-)
Played this in a Vegas arcade. Late dad then joked the other statues Rygar moves to get in and out of the between level temples resembled washing machines and that forever stuck; Rygar's quest is to fix the gods' washers and dryers. Thanks for the video and nostalgia trip.
Great channel PatmanQC. The hard work you have put into the many video's is obvious. It doesn't matter which country you lived in, the fun of being young in the 1980's and 1990's and loving the arcades is universal. I'm sure you have lots of great ideas for more documentaries, here are few that I would love to see...... - star wars in the arcade - scramble in the arcade - afterburner in the arcade - gauntlet in the arcade keep up the good work!
I love Rygar. As a kid I wasn't allowed to play arcades but snuck a few quarters into this game. The nintendo conversion was cool at the time as well. Thank Goodness for mame.
loved this game so much in the arcades!! the graphics kinda scared me and fascinated me at the same time as a child. The artwork is simply one of the best in pixelart and was one of the first games I played on MAME and never knew about the NES version until I found it on internet. Amazing video!
I really loved the arcade version of this when it came out. Our local corner store had Rygar and Dragon's Lair inside. The mall that had the arcade was like a 45 minute walk, so the 5 minute walk to the corner store ate most of my quarters for years! Was really excited when Rygar came out for our NES. Was a bit different than the arcade but was still a lot of fun once we figured out how to play it. Games back then was a group effort between friends. No internet and only a handful of guides. Also the 1-900 Nintendo number was out there for how to with games. Never used it as my parents would have been really pissed. lol

Maybe you could cover Time Pilot at some point? I frequent a classic arcade in my Area and it's become my favorite. I've been a gamer my entire life. From the very day that I can remember seeing the Atari 2600 for the first time, to today lamenting how all these game companies only want more of my money opposed to making a creative and original game for me to enjoy. I'm really digging your channel and can't wait to see more from you.
The NES version was my favorite game growing up. Used to rent it over and over. Never did beat it because there was no manual or anything so I just basically had to explore everywhere to find clues.
Rygar is one of my all-time favourites, and I played the heck out of the original arcade version in my school days. It was also one of the reasons why bought the Atari Lynx. The Rygar port on the Lynx was exceptional. It really nailed the tight controls of the original game and the visuals and music were spot on. If only more Lynx games were on the same level of quality as Rygar, the Lynx would've had a much longer life span. I really recommend gamers try the original Rygar. The action is simple, but the controls feel great and the gameplay is really meaty. A true classic!

My introduction to Rygar was on a Play Choice 10 arcade cab while others played it. Never could remember the name but had been on the look out based on what I remembered it looked like. I then got a used copy of it for my NES a few years later. Still great memories beating it when i was 9 years old.
I loved this game on both the arcade cabinet and NES version and was just playing the nes version a few nights ago matter fact and I still njoy it. The ps2 version was surprisingly awesome as well, that game was overlooked greatly imo
I played the NES version when I was a kid, but I got lost and lost where I was supposed to go, I never managed to complete that game but the tine is still in my mind to this day.
How you only have a little over 32 thousand subscribers baffles me. You are truly amazing at what you do and I will continue to follow and support your channel. Maybe I am a little biased growing up in the heyday of all these amazing games (I am 39) but you really do the research and know all the cool trivial things which brings me back time and time again. Thank you! P.S. I love Greek and Roman mythology, obviously this was after all that due to the story of Rygar but this became quickly my favorite game along with Contra. I could never not play these two when I waltzed past the arcades around the AFB. My father even had 3 dollars worth of quarters for me at the ready (In 1991, ha ha. That was a good chunk back then.) when we were on base if he knew we were going to hit the commissary or base exchange. Surprisingly the bowling alley on Yokota had all the real big time games. Lol.

This was my favourite game that I owned for my atari lynx. I used to laugh at my gameboy owning friends because i had colour and a backlit screen...until it came to going on school trips. the lynx was really only playable plugged in at home, due to the heavy battery requirements!
This is one of my all time favourite game, I remember back in 86 my brother was a pro at this game and complete it. Also, this game was also released on the Nintendo Switch.
the nintendo version was my first exposure to the series. it was also the first game i got, when i bought a nintendo on my birthday in 1987. i bought it intentionally on my birthday to avoid my dad's scorn, who despised and mocked video games. the fantasy aspect of rygar really keyed into my imagination
I didn't even know there was a version of Rygar for the PS2 and Wii: so pleased they did a good job and didn't ruin it. I think I might have to pick up a copy. I may be wrong but I feel like Rygar's disc weapon may have provided some inspiration for the God of War series as well.
I first played the NES version. Loved it. The PS2 version is real good. It's similar to God of War, but it came out before God of War. I'm pretty sure GoW borrowed a lot of ideas from Rygar on PS2.
My all times favorite. Spent hours an hours playing it. There is a hidden bonus if you match some dígitos of your score with the remaining time once you get into the "shrines", and hold your stick down-left. Cant remember exactly how exactly. .
One of the besst experiences I remember playing this as a kid in the arcade in the 80's was beating this game an getting a extra quarter.... just like Gouls N Ghosts! I was a RYGER master!
I loved the NES version. It was fun, if a bit confusing thanks to there not being a explanation of how to level Rygar up. But, I eventually figured it out and was happy to be able to get on with the game.
(1987) I got a leave early note from school to go to the dentist, the bowling alley nearby had a new Rygar cab, Spent 5 hours nonstop and mysteriously lost the cash i had for a new school uniform. I never knew why retro enthusiasts creamed themselves over the Sharp68000......well now I know why.
In arcade version when before the time is running out and music starts alarming u and when time runs out then night comes and everything become dark and then an evil face appears which is invincible..... thats a spooky thing i found in this game in my childhood...it was like u should get to ur destination before night comes out where an evil starts lurking and hunting
I had the NES version I got for my 10th birthday along with the NES max controller, that controller had a disk as opposed to a D-pad and it had programmable buttons with on and off turbo for each button, well I kept getting my ass handed to me by rygar....until I had a moment of genius, my mom would make me play outside on Saturdays so I couldnt play my game till in the evening, well I turned on my game got me a stool and I took my character backed him up against the wall, turned on my turbo on my NES max, sit the stool on the button where was just enough force to gently hold the button down, and rygar would just toss that discus the whole time I was out playing rygar was stacking kills and getting my red blocks maxed out which is a huge advantage having it from the first level, told my mom please do not move that chair, when I got in 5 to 6 hours later I'd pick up the controller pimped out and ready to kick ass! One of my fondest memories figuring that little hustle, this was like 1986 or 87, wasnt no internet to type up cheats all you had was your own wits, but it worked out great
Late 80's, early 90's, in the arcasdes there was a game I used to like to play, but it wasn't in many of them. I remember it having vaugely bubbly jpopish soundtrack, looking like a standard side scroller shooter brawler, but the levels where not all connected normally, there where side levels, and shortcuts, and not all of them where standard fantasy. I remember a hatch that needed a jetpack to reach that went into a verticle scrolling shooting segment. Parts felt like they where in a space station. Others have found it from this description, but even though I bookmarked the videoes of gameplay they found, the next time I thought of it and wanted to look it up again, those vids where down and out of my favorites list. I have the odd feeling that it might show up here if I subscribe long enough, as one of my other favorite games is already on your channel, APB.

Played this a lot on arcade. What I remember is that the controls were really tight and responsive meaning not many cheesy deaths. The game was very hard though. But it felt fair.

PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries do you remember a game in the arcade it’s was a helicopter game you had to rescue hostages if you pressed a button it turned the helicopter facing toward you then pressing fire dropped bombs to blow up jail cells to free pows but be careful drop too many bombs you kill the pows. Can’t remember the Name of the game but I enjoyed it.
i had this as a child, and for some reason i was stuck, there was a place where u needed to jump to the right on the top down stages to outside the screen and then bank up in the mid-air , it took me a long time to know u couild do that, and for some reason, it seems no one else but me had that issue....

Forgive my ignorance Louis (I'm British) but what exactly is "Biscuits and Gravy"??
I've heard of it before, but never got the chance to ask someone what it is actually like!
In the UK Biscuits and Gravy would be thick meaty stock (which we pour over cooked meat, potatoes and vegetables) poured over sweet biscuits (which you guys call cookies and we dunk in our tea 😋) and would be particularly foul lol

I mainly played the NES version, though I did get a couple of tries at the arcade version once. I wanted to play the PS2 version, but I never could find it. I didn't start buying games online until a few years later.
A note about the music for the NES version. The very first two areas seem to have songs that are written to go together. They remind me a great deal of the action cartoons that were popular in the 1980's and earlier. If you can find the music for the two levels, imagine this with me:
The cartoon intro starts, and the first area music is playing. A narrator begins setting up the cartoon. "In a world controlled by an evil dominator, people have lost all hope! That is, until a hero from Argus came to save the day! He, and his trusty disk-armor, are all that stands in the way of the Dominator's complete control! Intruducing, RYGAARRR!" Once that sequence is over, the music for the second area plays, and it shows different scenes from the cartoon.
I dunno. Maybe it's just me. :-)

Played this in a Vegas arcade. Late dad then joked the other statues Rygar moves to get in and out of the between level temples resembled washing machines and that forever stuck; Rygar's quest is to fix the gods' washers and dryers. Thanks for the video and nostalgia trip.

I love Rygar. As a kid I wasn't allowed to play arcades but snuck a few quarters into this game. The nintendo conversion was cool at the time as well. Thank Goodness for mame.

loved this game so much in the arcades!! the graphics kinda scared me and fascinated me at the same time as a child. The artwork is simply one of the best in pixelart and was one of the first games I played on MAME and never knew about the NES version until I found it on internet. Amazing video!

I really loved the arcade version of this when it came out. Our local corner store had Rygar and Dragon's Lair inside. The mall that had the arcade was like a 45 minute walk, so the 5 minute walk to the corner store ate most of my quarters for years!
Was really excited when Rygar came out for our NES. Was a bit different than the arcade but was still a lot of fun once we figured out how to play it. Games back then was a group effort between friends. No internet and only a handful of guides. Also the 1-900 Nintendo number was out there for how to with games. Never used it as my parents would have been really pissed. lol

Maybe you could cover Time Pilot at some point? I frequent a classic arcade in my Area and it's become my favorite. I've been a gamer my entire life. From the very day that I can remember seeing the Atari 2600 for the first time, to today lamenting how all these game companies only want more of my money opposed to making a creative and original game for me to enjoy. I'm really digging your channel and can't wait to see more from you.

The NES version was my favorite game growing up. Used to rent it over and over. Never did beat it because there was no manual or anything so I just basically had to explore everywhere to find clues.

Rygar is one of my all-time favourites, and I played the heck out of the original arcade version in my school days. It was also one of the reasons why bought the Atari Lynx. The Rygar port on the Lynx was exceptional. It really nailed the tight controls of the original game and the visuals and music were spot on. If only more Lynx games were on the same level of quality as Rygar, the Lynx would've had a much longer life span. I really recommend gamers try the original Rygar. The action is simple, but the controls feel great and the gameplay is really meaty. A true classic!
I got the NES Rygar cartridge for Christmas of 1988. Brings back a lot of great memories! That music will stay will me forever.

My introduction to Rygar was on a Play Choice 10 arcade cab while others played it. Never could remember the name but had been on the look out based on what I remembered it looked like. I then got a used copy of it for my NES a few years later. Still great memories beating it when i was 9 years old.

I loved this game on both the arcade cabinet and NES version and was just playing the nes version a few nights ago matter fact and I still njoy it. The ps2 version was surprisingly awesome as well, that game was overlooked greatly imo

P.S. I love Greek and Roman mythology, obviously this was after all that due to the story of Rygar but this became quickly my favorite game along with Contra. I could never not play these two when I waltzed past the arcades around the AFB. My father even had 3 dollars worth of quarters for me at the ready (In 1991, ha ha. That was a good chunk back then.) when we were on base if he knew we were going to hit the commissary or base exchange. Surprisingly the bowling alley on Yokota had all the real big time games. Lol.

This was my favourite game that I owned for my atari lynx. I used to laugh at my gameboy owning friends because i had colour and a backlit screen...until it came to going on school trips. the lynx was really only playable plugged in at home, due to the heavy battery requirements!

the nintendo version was my first exposure to the series. it was also the first game i got, when i bought a nintendo on my birthday in 1987. i bought it intentionally on my birthday to avoid my dad's scorn, who despised and mocked video games. the fantasy aspect of rygar really keyed into my imagination
Fun fact : The yo-yo's origin was indeed as a weapon, centuries before it was a toy. Look it up, you'll find it interesting and educational.

I didn't even know there was a version of Rygar for the PS2 and Wii: so pleased they did a good job and didn't ruin it. I think I might have to pick up a copy. I may be wrong but I feel like Rygar's disc weapon may have provided some inspiration for the God of War series as well.

I first played the NES version. Loved it. The PS2 version is real good. It's similar to God of War, but it came out before God of War. I'm pretty sure GoW borrowed a lot of ideas from Rygar on PS2.
My all times favorite. Spent hours an hours playing it. There is a hidden bonus if you match some dígitos of your score with the remaining time once you get into the "shrines", and hold your stick down-left. Cant remember exactly how exactly. .

(1987) I got a leave early note from school to go to the dentist, the bowling alley nearby had a new Rygar cab, Spent 5 hours nonstop and mysteriously lost the cash i had for a new school uniform. I never knew why retro enthusiasts creamed themselves over the Sharp68000......well now I know why.

In arcade version when before the time is running out and music starts alarming u and when time runs out then night comes and everything become dark and then an evil face appears which is invincible..... thats a spooky thing i found in this game in my childhood...it was like u should get to ur destination before night comes out where an evil starts lurking and hunting

As a kid it seems like everyone I knew had the same handful of NES titles, this was one. It was friggin' creepy and so mysterious as a child.
I was used to the arcade game so it didn't bother me too bad
I had the NES version I got for my 10th birthday along with the NES max controller, that controller had a disk as opposed to a D-pad and it had programmable buttons with on and off turbo for each button, well I kept getting my ass handed to me by rygar....until I had a moment of genius, my mom would make me play outside on Saturdays so I couldnt play my game till in the evening, well I turned on my game got me a stool and I took my character backed him up against the wall, turned on my turbo on my NES max, sit the stool on the button where was just enough force to gently hold the button down, and rygar would just toss that discus the whole time I was out playing rygar was stacking kills and getting my red blocks maxed out which is a huge advantage having it from the first level, told my mom please do not move that chair, when I got in 5 to 6 hours later I'd pick up the controller pimped out and ready to kick ass! One of my fondest memories figuring that little hustle, this was like 1986 or 87, wasnt no internet to type up cheats all you had was your own wits, but it worked out great

Late 80's, early 90's, in the arcasdes there was a game I used to like to play, but it wasn't in many of them. I remember it having vaugely bubbly jpopish soundtrack, looking like a standard side scroller shooter brawler, but the levels where not all connected normally, there where side levels, and shortcuts, and not all of them where standard fantasy. I remember a hatch that needed a jetpack to reach that went into a verticle scrolling shooting segment. Parts felt like they where in a space station. Others have found it from this description, but even though I bookmarked the videoes of gameplay they found, the next time I thought of it and wanted to look it up again, those vids where down and out of my favorites list.
I have the odd feeling that it might show up here if I subscribe long enough, as one of my other favorite games is already on your channel, APB.

Played this a lot on arcade. What I remember is that the controls were really tight and responsive meaning not many cheesy deaths. The game was very hard though. But it felt fair.

Quite surprised there was never a PC Engine port, seemed like the typical type of game that would appear on the system.
The game came out in 1986 so it was just a bit too old to appear on the PC engine.
I could see that, Rygar is my favorite NES game. I would compare it to Legendary Axe on the TG16

PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries do you remember a game in the arcade it’s was a helicopter game you had to rescue hostages if you pressed a button it turned the helicopter facing toward you then pressing fire dropped bombs to blow up jail cells to free pows but be careful drop too many bombs you kill the pows. Can’t remember the Name of the game but I enjoyed it.

i had this as a child, and for some reason i was stuck, there was a place where u needed to jump to the right on the top down stages to outside the screen and then bank up in the mid-air , it took me a long time to know u couild do that, and for some reason, it seems no one else but me had that issue....
