I loved your video. Made me homesick for the high Sierra, probably will never make it back. Watching your video truly gave me at home sick feeling in my stomach if you know what I mean. Thank you!
Excellent video. Narration explained where/what/when. Scenery great and background music volume not intrusive. Also the narrator's calm demeanor suited the tranquility of the hike. All these things made this video far better than most others.
My daughter and friends are just finishing up the JMT. Before leaving, she told me to watch some of the video's out there of JMT. I believe she wanted to reassure me, she will be fine, now I envy all the beauty she will see as I watched your video. It was a fantastic journey for you and your brother to take together. I must say, you and your brother have the best one out there. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
Hiking Nerd, Yes, beautiful indeed. It’s hard to choose just one memory, however, I will say it’s when I reached the Whitney Portal after summiting Mt. Whitney because that was the finish line. I summited from Guitar Lake with one hour of sleep so it was brutal. I always sleep well in the Sierras, but not that night prior to the final climb. The JMT will always be a slice of heaven to me. Keep on hiking, friends!
Thanks for this. It brought back memories. In 1974 at 14 years of age, I hiked the same but the opposite direction. It's good to see that it looks the same except for the larger size of the store at the end and the crowds on that side of trail.
This is beautifully done. Narration is perfect - not intrusive, yet still provides perspective that is interesting and involving. Wonderful videography, too. And you couldn't have chosen a more beautiful time, though you paid for it with snow and mosquitos. So well done! I did exactly the same trip when I was 22, and now I'm 71. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories...
Fantastic video diary! Thank You! I'm 56 now and have always wanted to do exactly the same route as you guys did. I've done Whitney a couple of times a couple of decades ago, and from the summit, looking out across the West side into that valley, was just so inviting. Unfortunately, (and occurring very soon thereafter,) with very bad knees, those hopes and dreams have gone unfulfilled. I have to say, this video made me Google, "Hiking the John Muir Trail with Bad Knees". I am now reading loads of articles on this and SOOO hope that I will someday, in the near future, be able to fulfill this long overdue adventure. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
You're still young so you have plenty of time to make this dream of yours a reality! There are a few ways to cover 211 miles but it all starts with building up a base fitness for hiking. Although hiking isn't usually seen as a competitive sport, you can still apply a training regimen to help strengthen your body and overcome past injuries. I think some good milestones to hit are 1 mile, 5 mile, 10 mile, 15 mile day hikes; then work your way up to those distances with a pack; then start doing a few consecutive days of backpacking. Fortunately, backpacking gear is considerably lighter/better than it was in the past so that can be very helpful with weaker knees. You can even do the trail in sections! No matter how you get out there, it's simply breathtaking once you're there.
Try cycling. It worked for me. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and my doctor said I should expect to need a knee replacement by last year. I'm still going strong and loving backpacking. Proper use of trekking poles is also a big help.
Well done! You gotta do a lessons learned follow up video. Favorite gear. Stuff you could have left behind. Stuff you wish you had. Experience is pure gold.
My husband and I loved this - I especially appreciated that there wasn't really loud background music, and that you were honest about the difficulties. Thank you for sharing!
I watched this documentary last year. It is still on my bucket list! We have a song that we wrote called "Mountain Calling" and it is a nod to John Muir and his life. Very inspiring guy. If you haven't read his biography you should!
So true these guys did it right. The hippies along the Appalachian trails completely ruin it along with any desire to hike it. They ruin the point of going on these hikes with their music, drinking and drugs and don't enjoy the nature.
+april murphy: Right. Why do some people assume I'll like their music? If it's about hiking, I'd like to hear the silence or sounds of the trail as well as the hiker's narration. As you intimated, why add an alien sound to nature when the whole video is about enjoying nature?
Hey guys this was the first video I ever watched of the JMT, since then I watched many more, and I felt in love with the journey, my wife and I attempted the trail in 2019, totally unprepared failed, will hike it again this year, and will finish our adventure for sure, thanks for your video.
I can't imagine the camaraderie that you two must have after that trip! Bravo!..Not only for undertaking an adventure like this but also having the craft and patience to put it together so well!
Thank you! We were very lucky for the opportunity - it isn’t often that we can make this much time available and to have such great conditions on trail.
I use this as my go-to for backpackers and non-backpackers to explain what JMT is like. This is really well done, guys; thanks for putting in the work to make this
I really love you said “All we had to do is walk it, but somebody had to build it" I should really try out all my efforts to protect all out there, the trail, the environment, the spirit! Thanks for the video!!
I've watched this video a number of times, I just watched again, and as usual, WOW! Always enjoy this one! Great footage, some incredible views! Thanks again and again for sharing!
You may be confusing me with someone else. Haven't been at Reds this summer...yet. I did check out your channel and subscribed. Good stuff! We share a similar vision in sharing what we love and possibly helping others. Happy trails!
Awesome job guys!! Really making me consider northbound for my next attempt! Your video quality was best I've seen here on UA-cam. What camera did you use if you don't mind me asking? Congrats on your trip!
Tremendous work. You nailed it. Perfect timing this year. I have spent hundreds of days in the Sierra, watched dozens of other video. This is the one of the best.
Nice documentation of your JMT. Your picture quality was better than most. You made someone very happy giving your stove away. I like the next to the last shot, using the mouth mask to shade the eye for a nap, very practical double use.
3 years ago me and friends had to exit the JMT after 6 days due to an injury. After watching this video I'm inspired to go back and do the whole thing! Keep up the awesome content. Will love to hit the trail and cross paths
One of my favorite JMT videos! I'm quite impressed with the pace you two maintained. It's nice to be young. I love the preparation and organization of your gear lists. Very detailed. Not many people count and weigh their toilet paper squares, and list each every item of their first aid kit. I'm surprised with that level of organization that you lost your stove and pot, but great that you took it in stride and adapted. Congratulations on a great hike and great video.
What a great video! You captured the incredible scenery, your feelings and struggles and the overall experience of the JMT, and you did it without unnecessary conversation. The JMT has long been a dream of mine and is on my backpacking "bucket list". Thanks for taking me along.
I've done parts of your hike. It was a life changing experience. Your video took me back there. Thank you for making this video and sharing it with us. Thank you.
Hello my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing your adventure on the JMT. That is such a beautiful area. you did a great job of filming and narrating. Back in October of '71' my neighbor and I summited Mt. Whitney. Your video brought back some pleasant memories. All the best to you guys in the New Year. 🤗
Love your videos, I'm on dialysis and always wanted to go on a long trail hike. I'm always pushing myself and hope to get out there and experience real natural untouched nature. Keep up the great work
Hello Jimmy and Michael, thank you for sharing your fine video. I really enjoyed it. Your adventure brought back some pleasant memories of a back packing trip that I took in the early 70's. You guys be safe out there. 🤗
What a beautiful adventure. So many scenic views along the way and to end with Yosemite was epic. This is def on my to do list. Thanks for sharing as always.
Very well done Gentlemen. Right down to the burger and beer at the end. Bravo! My only comment would be that your water bottle location next to your face the whole time would have drove me bonkers, but to each their own! Very well done!
So awe struck with your hiking experience. You both did an amazing job! Love the photography of beautiful nature, your experience and sharing it with the world.
Great job, guys. Thanks for sharing your adventure. So beautiful up there and you did it tremendous service with your excellent videography, nice pacing, and dialogue.
Nice video. I hope you enjoyed the hike; it looks like you did. I did the JMT in 2015 and then came back in 2016 to explore the southern Sierra away from the JMT and the area between Reds Meadow and Wanda Lake this year. So much beauty along the JMT and beauty with seclusion off the JMT. I don't think I'll ever grow tired of it.
Great video. I’d like to see and hear a bit more narrative above and beyond: this is where we are and this is where we are going. Talk about why you love hiking, add some motivational dialogue. Like why did you decide to do the JMT? what roadblocks did you encounter and how did you conquer them? Congrats and good job on JMT.
I really enjoyed sharing in your trip. Well done video and the scenery is just fantastic. Hope you have another adventure and make another video of it. All the best to you both!
Loved watching you and your brother on this epic journey. Thanks for sharing such an amazing trip. You further inspire me to do the JMT, a trail I have wanted to do for many years. So cool you got to do it with your brother. Happy trails.
Hi guy's wow simply stunning landscape and views, awesome video well done it was so easy and relaxing to watch, great camera work and the music was very calm and soothing thank you for posting I loved it ☺
AMMMMMMMMAZING HIKE, guys!!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!! very impressive! love the way you documented this and such a well organized hike!!!! BRAVO!!!! hands down
Another great video. Good job guys. Congrats !! Also, get the left leg checked out, I had the same issue, meniscus. Hope it gets better for you. God Bless
Sensational stuff brothers. I'm doing a small section of the JMT (Yosemite to Red Meadows) next month. I'm now confident thanks to you guys, cause I'm planning to do that patch in 7 days.
Guys, this is beautifully shot considering it was done on an iPhone. Really enjoyed your experience. It looks so so beautiful on the John Muir Trail my eyes are watering..I'm heading across to the States from Australia to do the PCT in March 2020. Cheers!
Very inspiring documentary indeed. I'm planning to do the same next year, 2021. It's going to be a solo trip. Wish me luck. Thanks for sharing a great video! 👍

rebecca lasiter Thank you! I’m sure she’s having a great time out there! There are also a lot of people on the trail so I wouldn’t worry.
You guys bring life to my August JMT 2017 trip! I didn’t film nearly as much as u did.
Thank you.
You are the epitome of excellent living!
Beautiful trail this year, eh? What's your fondest memory from your hike?
Hiking Nerd,
Yes, beautiful indeed. It’s hard to choose just one memory, however, I will say it’s when I reached the Whitney Portal after summiting Mt. Whitney because that was the finish line. Ok, you had me rolling at "the biggest challenge isn't Whitney, it's holding my poop in" 😂😂😂😂 Love how you documented this.
Hahaha I got a good laugh out of that too!
LOL - I had rewind a couple of times to make sure if that's what I heard him say!
It's funny because.... it's true. :P
Of course you would catch this, Tim. You definitely have an eye (and ear) for all things related to poop and trowels :)
I just sat down for lunch . I thought that is what he said, lol. Great video
Thanks for this. It brought back memories. In 1974 at 14 years of age, I hiked the same but the opposite direction. It's good to see that it looks the same except for the larger size of the store at the end and the crowds on that side of trail.

Thank you! I hope to be in your position one day, reminiscing on a life well adventured.
Fantastic video diary! Thank You! I'm 56 now and have always wanted to do exactly the same route as you guys did. I've done Whitney a couple of times a couple of decades ago, and from the summit, looking out across the West side into that valley, was just so inviting. Ran into you guys on the way up Muir pass, we were the guys doing the High Route. Well done on the video, I enjoyed watching it!
Wonderful photography. That's a long hike !!!
I watched this documentary last year. It is still on my bucket list! We have a song that we wrote called "Mountain Calling" and it is a nod to John Muir and his life. Very inspiring guy. If you haven't read his biography you should!
Very well done! Love this video! Beautiful photography without loud, annoying music! You guys kicked butt!
+Lance Takata: Exactly, no loud music, wonderful. Most other videos ruin their recordings with intrusive noise.

Very quick 40 minutes! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking me on your journey. Excellent work !!
Well done gentlemen. Thank you for sharing your journey and experience with us.
Awesome video guys. You made it look easier than it is. The JMT is a worthy accomplishment. Congrats! Great pictures by the way.
Thanks, I subbed to your channel! Looks like it's a small world of video creators here on UA-cam.
You may be confusing me with someone else. Haven't been at Reds this summer...yet. I did check out your channel and subscribed. Good stuff! We share a similar vision in sharing what we love and possibly helping others. Happy trails!
My bad, I thought it was just too coincidental..
Awesome job guys!! Really making me consider northbound for my next attempt! Your video quality was best I've seen here on UA-cam. What camera did you use if you don't mind me asking? Congrats on your trip!
Thanks. I used an iPhone 7 Plus for the video.
Tremendous work. You nailed it. Perfect timing this year. I have spent hundreds of days in the Sierra, watched dozens of other video. This is the one of the best.
I don't like hiking long distance but I thoroughly enjoyed watching your long video! Very good narration, picture quality and peaceful music...
Thanks for the ride, guys!
Nice documentation of your JMT. Your picture quality was better than most. You made someone very happy giving your stove away. I like the next to the last shot, using the mouth mask to shade the eye for a nap, very practical double use.

Amazing video!!! I am 55 and have backpacked throughout the Sierra in my 20s and 30s.
Aching to get back into it. Thank you!!!!
Phenomenal video - not too long and not too short. Video quality was spectacular!

If you get a transplant let yourself heal a just go.
Hello Jimmy and Michael, thank you for sharing your fine video. I really enjoyed it. Your adventure brought back some pleasant memories of a back packing trip that I took in the early 70's. You guys be safe out there. 🤗
Your production quality is superb. Been following you for a while and really enjoy the work you put in. Keep it up!
Thank you!

fantastic scenery, straight to the point. Well done, loved it.I`ll probably watch it again!! well done boys!! Stay safe.
Very well done Gentlemen. Right down to the burger and beer at the end. Bravo! My only comment would be that your water bottle location next to your face the whole time would have drove me bonkers, but to each their own! Very well done!
I can't stop watching this video! I love it because it's like I'm backpacking with you guys. Can you guys to the colorado trail please!!!
This was great, loved it and thanks for sharing it with those like me, that can no longer hike the trails.
Thanks for bringing the experience to us...people that will never get this opportunity. Cheers!
Really beautiful and inspiring! This is a bucket list trip for me and my brother as well.
So awe struck with your hiking experience. You both did an amazing job! Love the photography of beautiful nature, your experience and sharing it with the world.

Great adventure guy thanks for filming it and sharing it.
Mt. Whitney - where the air is thin, but the marmots are not! Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
Jimmy and Michael's excellent adventure... epic trip. Thanks for sharing, take care.
Brilliantly filmed and edited. Amazing views. Thanks for sharing and congrats on completing the JMT.
Thanks. for bringing me along! Congrats!
Great job boys !! Can't believe you didn't pull a few wild trout out of those lakes and streams, tastiest food in the sierra...
Well done guys! It was fun tagging along.
Great job guys, the vistas where breathtaking. Thanks for sharing and taking me along. 😇✌
Very nice video. Love the choice of music as it complemented the scenery. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Very inspiring documentary indeed.
I'm planning to do the same next year, 2021. It's going to be a solo trip. Wish me luck.
Thanks for sharing a great video! 👍
Good luck!
Loved your video. All the big and the small details and everything in between. Awesome!
Welcome back Jimmy! Been awhile. Love the dual Flex's!
Thanks Martin. Now you know what I've been up to!
Excellent video. JMT is on my list if not the whole PCT. Thank you for sharing and congratulations
That was really good! I watched the whole thing
Nicely done. Great clear video. Loved the comment about the police officer telling you not park there. I've found police or park rangers are extremely friendly when asking about parking. I've even had a couple of officers tell me "secret spots" to park in.
Ahh the memories. Used to do 50-60 mi treks over a week as a Boy Scout in the early 70's. Remember lots of spots. Thanks
I'm inspired.. luv it fellas.
That was an awesome video. You guys knocked it out quickly. We leave July 31 heading northbound out of Cottonwood Pass. Thank you for posting, hope you guys are doing well.
Have fun John! It will be a fantastic adventure.
Great video, guys! That's a trip I've wanted to do for years, but never got around to it. Thanks for letting me live it thru you.
Very nice. I like the quality of your images...top notch. Congratulations on completing your trip!
Great video gentlemen! Can only say thank you! Take care...
That was a killer hike! Great job 👍👍 🤠
Thanks for sharing. Great compilation. Well done!! The JMT is on my list....hopefully in the next several years.
