This is the most underrated song on the album, in my opinion. It's such a rollercoaster ride with the its chill sax vibes at times, and then quickly transitions into these massive crescendos.
Pink floyd is on a whole other level. There will never be another band like them. Psychedelic and very progressive. Please listen to sheep or dogs from there animals album
"It just ends like that?" The Dark Side of the Moon album is intended to be listened to from front to back, in order, without interruption. So the songs flow from one into the next without defined starting and stopping points. That's why it's a little jarring to listen to anything from the album in isolation; the beginnings and endings seem random.
Well you’ve listened to the whole album with the exception of the Roger Waters sung tunes of Brain Damage/Eclipse. If and when you get to those you have to listen to both as they are connected. Technically, the whole album is connected but those two have no separation. And yes, do a live stream of the album from start to finish. You may have a new insight on the songs from your original listen.
Gotta say, I love you Lex, love your reactions from the heart. This is a song that works on sooooo many levels, and you were feeling them! And Brad, you're awesome!!!! I love the way your mind tries to reason though the lyrics!!! Fantastic reaction to my all time favorite album!
I'm old now but I remember sitting in my dorm room back in in 1973 with my homie smoking joints and drinking cheap wine getting lit to the entire album.✌️
I was living in Uni halls six years ago. Me and close friends would do exactly the same thing. Some of the best chill nights of my life. This album is timeless.
I was a freshman in high school in '73 - just beginning my journey into rock on my own. Alice Cooper invited me in, and the party had some of the most amazing artists. Pink Floyd was obviously one of the big guns.
Us and them is just general. That's why the verse is followed up with "me" and "you" and the note that it isn't want we would choose to do. It's the idea that you and I can sit down and figure shit out, but when you start to get groups - gangs or governments - the "me" and "you" gets subsumed.
Well put. Or as Tommy Lee Jones out it to Will Smith at the beginning of Men in Black, "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."
You have to listen to the whole album to truly grasp the concept . These geniuses were ground breaking . No break between songs , each one rolled into the next . Pure class ! I'm 59 now , never been able to get away from the sheer brilliance of their musicianship . I must add , that it's refreshing to see young people appreciate the excellence of Floyd and cast off the shackles of banal mainstream dirge .
Every note on this album is perfect. The ending seems abrupt, but this song blends directly into the next with no break in the soundscape. When you listen to the individual tracks, the song breaks become evident. Listen to the whole album straight through sometime.
You both are so smart, im learning from your insights, as an old man from Amsterdam, on themes of life by what Pink Floyd puts into a transcending musical art form. Bless you both Brad and Lex.
I was glued to my seat back in the 70s while at a pink Floyd concert. The music was that impact full. By the way so was everyone else. I will never forget that feeling of that powerful experience. I was probably 15 , I am 65 now , I have seen hundreds of concerts. I will never forget this one.
5 or 6 of us in college at a friends apartment were on the couch, chairs and laying on the floor, tuned up by means of choice, eyes closed and it was always start to finish. Only lights were the amp and the lava lamp!
Been listening to this album for well over 40 yrs. Never gets old. One of the top 3 all time albums. It has been certified 14X platinum in the uk. Topped the us billboard where it charted for over 958 weeks. Selling an estimated 45 million copies. In 2013 it was selected for preservation in the United States national recording registry by library of congress for being deemed culturally -historically-or aesthetically significant. ✌️
The album that this song is from is "Dark Side of the Moon", a concept album where the theme is the human condition. This song specifically is about conflict, be it between nations (wars), classes (rich vs. poor), or individuals. Other songs on the album have themes of aging, death, greed, and mental illness. The talking that you heard at the very beginning was the ending of the song that immediately precedes "Us and Them" on the album, as most of the tracks bleed into the next. I recommend, as others have commented, that you listen to the entire album in one sitting, because that's how the band intended it and how it's best appreciated.
Sometimes I put the CD into the player, lean back in my Lazy Boy with my headphones on and feet up, close my eyes and listen to the whole CD. It is like the music picks me up and carries me away, and where it takes me sometimes seems to change depending on my mood, and when it finishes I feel really chill.
Yet another brilliant track from one of the greatest albums ever made. You really need to listen to the whole album because it's a concept album about some of what goes on in life for many people. The trials and tribulations we go through. Lex is spot on, listening to 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' while having a nice fat spliff is absolutely the way to do it. I speak from personal experience here. You need to listen to the track i consider to be their magnum opus 'Echoes'. It's pretty long at 23-30 but the images I have in my head when listening are mind blowing.
Brad and Lex you both really compliment each other on analysis, like a sea saw up and down but eventually you both get stuck in the middle laughing at each other.
Your guys work is appreciated very much. Lex's love for music makes me want to watch. Pink Floyd are the masters of recording and engineering. They set the standard.
I was only 12 when this album came out. I was with my older brother playing basketball at a buddies place when someone in the house put this album on the turntable and I was mesmerized. It's funny how a person can remember past events and how it makes one feel when they hear a certain song. I'm 61 now and I still listen to this album. Imo, the whole album is one of the greatest musical masterpieces of the 20th century. There's simply nothing like it. All their music is worth a listen.
@@robmarconi6758 If there are lyrics in it then it is a song. If there isn't then it's not a song! You are the one who said "The Great Gig in the Sky doesn't have lyrics..."
This album was produced to be listened to in it's entirety it flows from song to song. That's why many seem to just cut off. You are both right in what it's about. We are always dividing ourselves into us and them. Countries, ethnicity, regional, down to families and friends.
Timeless poetry such as this has many levels of meaning. Laid out before us by the artist so succinctly, yet so sublime. All of us can see the reference to the nature of war, its cruelty, and futility. However, I believe there is a more primal meaning to these words. It's more about human nature, rather than the nature of war. The “Us and Them” verse refers to how groups (tribes) of humans can be cruel to one another, but as individuals we like to think we would not act this way. The “Black and Blue” verse refers to how, from the beginning of time and until its end, individuals are drawn to congregate and called to war. We like to think that as individuals we are called to war by our dehumanized leaders with their wicked words. The “Down and Out” verse is the clincher that exposes one cruel aspect of human nature, greed. The greed of nations cause war and we can't deny that is what the fighting is all about. Yet, in our personal lives, our greed can blind us to the suffering of the needy within our own society with people dying for the price of tea and a slice.
This is a thyme album and should really be listened too from side one, song one, to the end of side two when it all comes back around. A masterpeice of musical talent.
It’s remarkable just how well DSOTM stands up today. I remember being stunned by it during the early/mid 70’s, reviling it during the Punk era, and slowly rediscovering its greatness as I grew older. The album truly represents an artistic achievement.
This is a song about war, social class, ethnic segragation/separation and political preference. It is about the polarity that we are experiencing in the world now, though it has always existed, and it leads nowhere, except to conflict and destruction. And in the end, we are all the same, none of us better than the other. One of my favorite old songs.
I agree with all the comments. Even if you guys do it on your own time without a reaction, this album and The Wall need to be listened to in their entirety.
Dark Side of the Moon is a single performance. And yes Lex, it is amazing to listen to with friends, sitting on the floor in someone's living room with a little purple haze in the air.
962 weeks on the Billboard Top 200 since it dropped in 1973. By October, it should reach 1,000 weeks! No album comes even close. 'Darkside Of The Moon' is a timeless iconic masterpiece. The true GOATS - PINK FLOYD!! Shine On!! 💎🐐 🎸🐐🎤🐐🎹🐐🥁🐐💎🔺️🌈🔼🌈🔺️🌈
The Dark Side of the Moon is one of the greatest albums ever made. It never ages, and it was years before its time. It is designed to be listened to from beginning to end. It is profound, timeless, beautiful, dark, and challenging all at once. It evokes emotions and feelings, thoughts of life and death, love and loss, and madness. An extraordinary feat. I tire of even the best albums, I have to leave a long time between listens... but not this. The music, the lyrics, the vocal interjections, the experimentation. It is life- and death-affirming.
Gotta make another comment. Lex is so good at picking up on things, she amazes me. Doesn't matter if they're listening to a song, or watching a news story. Anything, she's in tune. Round and round and round we go. Just look at the world, we've all been going in that circle since the beginning of time, and we're destined to repeat our past mistakes.
us-versus-them effect: the tendency of individuals to view the social world in terms of an ingroup (“us”) and an outgroup (“them”). Consequently, people prefer to associate with those who are similar over those who are different, preferentially allocate resources to similar others, and hold more positive beliefs about similar others. It's the reason for war, violent crime, racism, etc...
Right on brother 😎… I see many “reaction videos” like this one where they totally misinterpreted the message conveyed in the lyrics. Most Pink Floyd songs were reflection of social and political issues of the time they were written in.
You know there are a lot of absolutely perfect records and every song is great . But DSOTM is beyond the level of perfection , it’s one hour of pure emotions that lifts your mind to a state it only can reach when listening this exact record. There’s nothing quite like it.
I think it’s been said in the comments but this album is really meant to be listened to straight through 1st track to last track. It really is an experience to be had.
One of the cooler moments of a Pink Floyd concert is when they played this tune. Everybody was standing up for the first 4 or 5 songs of the show. They start playing “Us And Them” and everyone sat down in an orderly fashion starting with the front row. It was a mellow moment and cool to see
this is about the entire album. It’s a concept. you can’t take one track. look at the cover of the album. Dark side of the Moon. this is VERY deep on so many levels. over 30 yrs of listening to this album even now am finding new things. it’s why it’s the greatest album ever made. Timeless.

For God's sake listen to the full album, uninterrupted, off camera, for yourselves. It's a masterpiece of composition that everyone should experience. It is meant to be heard in one sitting.
I agree with others, the album must be heard in it’s entirety at least once. Dark Side of the Moon spent 958 weeks on the album charts. That’s like 18 years.
This song is so so so sad to me. I cry every time I hear it because the lyrics really hit me. "God only knows it's not what we would choose to do." Specifically is where I lose it - most normal people wouldn't choose war, and yet we have no control over it.
Hard to just stop songs that all blend together. The end of Money was what you heard at the start (with the voices etc) Any colour you like was next. This isn’t a “one song” listen. Pink Floyd may have HITS but not their intention. Each song from each album is part of a puzzle or story. Good work in working what you feel the song is about. Definitely one that is up for your own perspective
I'm 39 and Pink Floyd was before my time. I was introduced to them when I was 20. I bought an old car with a cassette player, and didn't have cassettes to listen to, so my roommate at the time raided his mom's stash of cassettes. I listened to 'The Wall' first, then went through the rest. Listening to Pink Floyd, literally changed my life. I was a guitarist, but wasn't all that interested in the study of music. Then I heard PF, and I had to know how it was done. My taste in music changed after that, and I began what has been a lifelong study of music because of what Pink Floyd created. It is timeless, and will be listened to forever. Some of the best music created in my opinion.
She is adorable and beautiful person. Hope she never losses that enthusiasm and genuine personality, we need that in this world. Made me smile...obviously I already thought she was already beautiful.. U lucky my man..
I just so sgree, you need to listen to Dark Side Of The Moon in its entirety sometime to get the full Floyd effect. What you just heard is from it, the ebb and flow of this album is mind blowing, I still smoke a fat one for Floyd and have for over 50 years, they are musical geniuses in the top 5 of any musical act in human experience. Also experience Wish You Were Here and Animals all the way through, for the Wall, watch the movie. The journeys of a lifetime await you right on your couch! Enjoy. 🎸 By the way that song goes right into the next, they all do...
I would suggest you guys listen to the wall many times through to end before watching the movie. Listening will give you your own mental imagery. Once you watch the movie your own mental imagery is likely to be replaced. That’s what happened to me anyway. I don’t regret watching the movie, it’s great. But you want to have your own unique experience visually first. At least I’m glad I did. Wish I could remember what it was…
The first verse is about going to war, how on the front line we don’t get much chance to communicate with one another, because someone else has decided that we shouldn’t. The second verse is about civil liberties, racism, and color prejudice. The last verse is about passing a tramp in the street and not helping.
That is what Waters says now but somewhat different to what he previously said. He has a habit of reinterpreting his lyrics according to what he thinks is most topically relevant at the time.
Seeing this done to perfection live is something I'll never forget. Lex is dead on , in the 70's we used to just get stoned and listen to music for hours , Pink Floyd was always considered pretty trippy music . . . . . I think I heard this album a dozen times before I heard it straight , , it can be vary hypnotic . . . Pink Floyd albums are meant to be heard in their entirety , one song flows into the next CD's don't convey that vary well.
While I've loved seeing the extreme difference in the way Brad and Lex listen to music... or rather, that Lex is so into the music and Brad is solely interested in lyrics, often completely ignoring the music (literally in the case of Crimson and Clover, which Lex would probably love), sometimes I feel it might be a better idea for Lex to solo certain songs that are light on words, heavy on music.
Best analysis yet, this is how musicians communicate ideas to the masses. Artists observe, absorb, draw conclusions and disseminate their thoughts for those sensitive and perceptive enough to hear it. Nice work, guys.
I have never heard anyone define that beautiful vocalization on Great Gig in the Sky as "screams and stuff," before and I am absolutely dying right now 🤣

And you have to listen to it, alone, on a Sunday morning as the sun is rising, the room smoky and the empty beer cans strewn across the table
This song is a masterpiece, I fell in love with this song as a little kid, and 40 years later, it still touches me! Beautiful!
Same Brother!
This is the most underrated song on the album, in my opinion. It's such a rollercoaster ride with the its chill sax vibes at times, and then quickly transitions into these massive crescendos.
Very similar to Summer '68. Richard Wright was a master at this type of music.
I love this classic.... 💜
Pink floyd is on a whole other level. There will never be another band like them. Psychedelic and very progressive. Please listen to sheep or dogs from there animals album
Fun Fact: Dark Side of the Moon holds the record of staying on the Billboard 200 album chart for over 18 years. Nothing else comes close.
And that's both sides of the Atlantic. Over here too in the UK, where this genius originated. Æ 🙏
"It just ends like that?"
The Dark Side of the Moon album is intended to be listened to from front to back, in order, without interruption. So the songs flow from one into the next without defined starting and stopping points.
That's why it's a little jarring to listen to anything from the album in isolation; the beginnings and endings seem random.
They did a great job “getting it.” Nicely done.
@@terrylandess6072 Alice cooper put the Floyd up when they were touring in his area.
Careful Brad, I'm sure I'm not the only only one falling deeper and deeper for Lex. She really gets all this music, and it gets her too.
Yeah Brad you're a lucky guy. There is 1000s of guys who would gladly change places with you.
@@cobbycaputo3332 I forgot about that quote. Wow, that is SO true.
This album must be heard in its entirety as each song flows into the next. The whole album is one complete work.
Who needs therapy when you can just close your eyes and listen to Pink Floyd, lol.
"Onesies and a smorgasbord of cheese" would be a good album name.
Am I invited?
I'd hope the band's name is "Smorgasbord of Cheese"
.
The band members names will be cheese related.
@@michaelharvey1197 Eddie Cheddar and Johnny Swiss.
I was glued to my seat back in the 70s while at a pink Floyd concert. The music was that impact full. By the way so was everyone else. I will never forget that feeling of that powerful experience. I was probably 15 , I am 65 now , I have seen hundreds of concerts. I will never forget this one.
It is a minor crime against music, not to listen to this album all the way through in one sitting.
The two of you are delightful. You have brightened my day. Carry on.
each song blends into the next on this album. its meant to be listened to as one. not paused every minute and diluted. but anyway...
Brad and Lex you both really compliment each other on analysis, like a sea saw up and down but eventually you both get stuck in the middle laughing at each other.
When you'll decide to react to "Brain Damage", remember that you cannot listen to it without "Eclipse": they are intended to be listened as a whole.
Your guys work is appreciated very much. Lex's love for music makes me want to watch. Pink Floyd are the masters of recording and engineering. They set the standard.
Lex is down right smart, a bit odd but very insightful wrapped up in a cute persona, she would fit in with my own daughters.
Enjoyed this reaction. Your two personalities are perfect for reactions. Plus Lex is a sweetheart :)
nonononono Brad, Its not tooo trippy, its just the right amount of trippiness.
Trippy ma non troppo.
@@sourisvoleur4854 , great one!

You need to "partake" and listen to this entire album from start to finish to truly appreciate it. One of my absolute favorite albums.
Yep, whole album straight thru. Take the ride
Masterpiece. That sax.
Also, while the lyrics in this one are amazing, songs don't have to have any lyrics to be great
Well it isn't a song without lyrics, is it?

I have to say it again!! You are so cool Lex!! And btw. Smokin and Floyd go hand in hand. ❤✌
Conversation is always deeper when you listen to floyd 👏👏
It’s remarkable just how well DSOTM stands up today. I remember being stunned by it during the early/mid 70’s, reviling it during the Punk era, and slowly rediscovering its greatness as I grew older. The album truly represents an artistic achievement.
This always needs "Any colour you like" played right after
This is a song about war, social class, ethnic segragation/separation and political preference.
Yep, u can’t keep stopping this album, doesn’t do it justice
Dark Side of the Moon is a single performance. And yes Lex, it is amazing to listen to with friends, sitting on the floor in someone's living room with a little purple haze in the air.
I listened to this album on repeat during my lysergic experiences. Literally think you're floating at times!
Pink Floyd was the first music I tripped on acid to. And that is great hah
us-versus-them effect:
the tendency of individuals to view the social world in terms of an ingroup (“us”) and an outgroup (“them”).
"I like the slow. It slows you down and makes you think"
Let Pink Floyd be your spirit guide.
Timeless.
I love how gently the song begins after the organs. It's almost dramatic in its gentleness.
You guys really need to react to the entire album all at once.
Heard this song for the first time the year it came out. I was 12. Have heard the album/song probably well over a hundred times since, and this is the first time I saw the lyrics to this. Thanks guys.

For God's sake listen to the full album, uninterrupted, off camera, for yourselves. It's a masterpiece of composition that everyone should experience. It is meant to be heard in one sitting.
Protect this woman at all costs. She is a national treasure.
You should watch the entire Pink Floyd Pulse live concert. They go through Dark Side of the Moon. It’s spectacular!

Wish I could remember what it was…
I’ve seen almost 60 concerts , pink Floyd is in my top 2 hands down . Will never forget it !
Yeah Brad just doesn't get it.. His reactions are just ugggg
Should be Lex and Brad instead of his name first. Not very open minded and she is
Best analysis yet, this is how musicians communicate ideas to the masses. Artists observe, absorb, draw conclusions and disseminate their thoughts for those sensitive and perceptive enough to hear it. Nice work, guys.
Love you guys but when it comes to pink floyd. You have to listen to the whole album not 1 song at a time in random order
You got it Brad, you nailed what the Us and Them is.
I have never heard anyone define that beautiful vocalization on Great Gig in the Sky as "screams and stuff," before and I am absolutely dying right now 🤣
