In the early days of guitar internet, there were a few "bad mod" photos that got circulated around all the time. The big four to me were the 4-pickup Les Paul Custom w/ Humbucker, Mini Humbucker, Single Coil and P90 Dog Ear Pickup - the "Boat Paddle" Les Paul Deluxe body modification - The Headless SG and finally the "Lawsuit Proof" photoshop job. What has always appealed to me about these "meme guitars" is the fact they were shared once with one bad photo and then never seen again. I brought the headless SG to the world and a Chibson version of the Lawsuit Proof Meme. I'm still looking for the boat paddle... but at least we were able to catch this one on reverb!

Yeah, it’s Dr. Chuck again. One of my close friends and former band mate Mike Forst, made this guitar. I contacted him and said; “I never thought I would see the “Mike Forst Signature Les Paul Custom again” and he replied; “LOL”.
I was in a band with Mike during the 70’s as he was in the basement bastardizing this guitar. I was amazed when I saw him doing this as I have an almost identical ’71 Cherryburst Les Paul Custom (see below) that I did NOT chop apart and was appalled that he would do this. (!!!) He paused and asked me with jig saw in hand if I wanted to do mine as well,…. NO WAY!!!
This guitar is a 1973, very good detective work on your part as usual!! The reason for the extra screws up top was not for a left handed pickguard, but rather a pickguard he made that was like a right and left pickguard in one pickguard. I used to call it the batwing at the time. I hated this guitar and still do, but I figured you should know about it. Mike was also busy tearing other stuff apart at the time, like putting 6X9 car stereo speakers in his Hammond B3 bench as monitors, and sawing the top off his van and installing a huge sun roof dome. BTW, not sure of the rest, but the embossed humbucker was original, and the dog ear P90 was from an ES-125 that he was also tearing apart.
While trying to sell this guitar on Craig’s list he got much hate mail and even death threats as to why someone would destroy a valuable vintage piece. However at the time he butchered this guitar in the mid 70’s, (OMG!!! That route for the extra toggle almost made me want to cry!!!) there was no vintage market and only new and “used” guitars existed and used went for less, so we never really thought of these as such treasures then.
Cheers!
Chuck

This is a true Les Paul inspiration. Les did crazy stuff like this.
Good thought you would think someone would have info. Who ever used it was a monster.
Les' creativity knew no bounds, and neither did his drill, router, saw, or chisels
I'm so bummed you don't own this even at that crazy price. I wanted to hear it!
The OCD LP.
The Swiss army Les Paul.
@@b00ts4ndc4ts LOL.
Junk
What a Frankenstein of modifications to this Les Paul! Would've loved to see you dissect and play this one Trogly! If this guitar could talk, I'm sure it would have some stories to tell!
I wouldn’t give him 1 k for that les paul custom.
It is to meme lords what 59 bursts are to poor people
for 7500 you could buy 2 or 3 guitars that do all those tones and modded better than what was done to this guitar
@@leegeddyfan lmao I was thinking the same thing. Guitar players are so weird and I’m definitely not the exception.
I dont think many would but there are people with INSANE amounts of money who just want say THE ORIGINAL or ONLY of of something... The fact that it became a meme is weirdly why someone WILL pay that for it
It looks goofy as hell, but I imagine that’s quite a versatile axe.
Instead of Les Paul it's the more paul. 😂😁
@@Gene_Cali Funny enough, that’s basically how Morley got its name. They made a Leslie speaker that did more, thus Morley was born. Love their Wah pedals.
You probably missed this but it has the holes for double sided pickguard. Essentially 2 les paul custom 3 pickup variant on both sides of the pickups. Bonamassa owns some models with this feature.
As for the 2 screwed near the knobs my bet is their was a custom cover that protected the controls from accidental adjustment during sessions
LINK ..... LOL
@@timeWaster76 You can't add links YT blocks them
There were actually two pickguards in some instance. You can the a screwhole on the top side of the guitar
Trogly, you have to remember, back in the day, you used what you could get your hands on. You couldn’t go online and buy 90s or buy pickups at all. they were scooped out of other guitars or you just saw what was under glass at your local shop. So people experimented with what they could find. My fav and best guitar is a monstrosity vintage with absurd mods. Which,,, weren’t absurd at all once you play it and everything just flows. Everyone that touches it agrees, it’s a gift from god. And I got it cheap because its not proper.
The serial # looks more like 735306. The straight sides on the zero can be seen more clearly by adjusting contrast on the image. Thanks for bringing this one into the light!
I’m thinking 735506
735336, is my guess.
I'm seeing 735366 or possibly 735566 🤷🏼♂️
I gotta tell ya, Austin, that guitar reminds me of something I wanted desperately last year, only to have that desire rudely curtailed. I wrote here to you about maybe checking that guitar out, and you never did. That might mean you're smart. The guitar in question was a Sawtooth, and I think they called it a Hybrid ES. This guitar sported 3 single coil Strat-type pickups and two full-sized Les-Paul-type humbucking pickups. The humbuckers were arranged between the three single coils, and the bridge single coil didn't tilt -- it was straightened to make room for the bridge-most humbucker. I virtually drooled over the thought of the versatility that pickups array seemed to promise -- but then I thought of an article I'd read in Guitar Player magazine that said that Leo Fender insisted that only 3 pickups go into the Stratocaster, even though session guitar player Bill Carson (who Leo Fender listened to) asked for 4 or 5 pickups. I began to want to hear the guitar before any thought of purchasing. Eventually, I found a video only, which video had Michael Angelo Batio demonstrating the guitar. I'm sure glad I found that video, because that guitar sounded ATROCIOUS! I think the humbuckers were the worst, but I don't remember one good sound out of that guitar. That guitar you told us about doesn't look to me like it could POSSIBLY have sounded good from the assemblage of pickup it sports, but I think that I like the placement of the bridge and neck pickups. The other two, though, look mondo dicey to me.
6:29 - can't always go by nut. Bone nut could be a replacement nut. I do a lot of them for people who don't want nylon/plastic that is usually stock.
Look into the 59 Les Paul named Bad Coconuts.
How much you wanna bet it plays amazing?
I would have left the knob cavity alone and used double decker pots to provide for the control of the pickups.
That cluster of knobs really kicks in my trypophobia. Freaks me out.
Right ? Disgusting
The "Boat Paddle Deluxe" is my second fave to the "Hornless SG"
I work right near Plainview, NY. If you want to open up a conversation with the Seller and have me go examine this guitar / take additional photos to resolve any lingering questions, I would be more than happy to do so. I'm not dropping $7k on something like this, but if he wants it documented on your show, I can oblige.
Makes me think that maybe the original customizer was going for a poor mans version of Pete Townsends 70's #5 Les Paul.
my 1976 Les Paul Standard tobacco burst was made in Kalamazoo and it has the pancake body and the three piece mahogany neck. beautiful guitar. ive had it 47 years now since new. ive always thought the wood gave it character
Madness!! I had a bad case of G.A.S. this week, glad I didn't see this. Opted for the LP Studio Lite MIII, all the tones. Maybe the guy would do a live stream and Trog could talk him through the bench work. Ü ♫
I wouldn't have paid that kind of money for a ruined guitar, if I wanted one of those so badly I would have done it myself or commissioned someone to do it, saying that Trogly hasn't failed well with luthiers, the last one robbed him
My adhd would be so happy with the versatility
the case your said was 90s. my Ebony Les Paul Standard 1989 came in the brown case with pink lining and baby blanket also so made in the 80s too thats a fact
Modded my SG for stereo. Used it that way - once.
The 'I have got it all' Les Paul
The Nashville plant was being built in '74' , it opened in June '75' buiding the Mark series acoustic guitars.
Im thinking its a 72 kalamazoo made LPC for two reasons. The serial number does look similar to a 72 I use to have (that really doesnt mean much though) and the neck pup wiring looks to be straight across from the bass side of the bridge pup instead of it going diagonally. Im prolly wrong on both but the neck pup does look original to the guitar but not the position
7:55 you can se here that it definetly had a pickguard at the lefty position at one point
thank You for that great episode of ttgs!
OH man Austin, I was hoping you were buying it!!! Make him an offer....a Trade......Both.......Something!!!!! That would be the Guitar at the entrance of the Museum for sure. Go fore it
Les would love this thing
Ted Greene did something similar with his guitars.
They should have let the mouse they used finish the rest of this thing.
Some will definitely have nightmares tonight!!
THAT'S what Gerry Cott must have been looking for ...
Apparently, some sort of a mouse, made me LMFAO. Great job! I needed to laugh today.
I would have had the pickups from bridge to neck: paf, p90, strat, mini hb
I hope whoever buys it is a viewer and is willing to send it to you for documentation.
Wow, the Stereo Les Paul, volume/tone each master volume, what do the switches do?🤓. Is there a link to that one?
This same guitar is now being listed in Reverb for $5,999. You should get it!!!
Still there at that price, and they now say it’s a 1973. Maybe they watched this video?
Rick’o’Sound imitation ! 😊
This is the original prototype for the Variax !!!
The strat PU looks real, staggered poles, hard to be sure
Interesting Les Paul
Airplane Glue...It's a hell of a drug.
It is worth the price cause it will be a mark in history both for the internet and guitars.
There was a Strat at my old local shop that had a toilet seat for a body. That one would have been good for a laugh.
This one, you should've bought and documented.
You have to figure who ever used this guitar the tracks we have heard. The studio session angle rings true ... someone has to know who used it.
Is the P-90 slightly wider than normal, or is it just a camera angle?
Trogly talking for fifteen minutes about a meme guitar? I’m in
I have a lace sensor piezo pickup with a switch that I so want to install in one of my Strat Pluses…after this video I am going to do it. This LP reminds me of Townshends famous 3/6/9 LP deluxes-(2 mini HB plus D’Darrio super distortion…
Heres one for you in Australia...
i should buy it and string it up backards
Did they use a beaver to do the extra routing.
Some sorta of nasty thing!
Ouch.
wtf I saw the Chibson post before work today and thought that actually looks real... and hours later here we are.
Nice black beauty caps in there
Still waiting for you to do the Wangcaster lolol
I'm gonna call it Walleye
Now I’m sad it’s not a lefty
It's a Swiss Army guitar!
Let us hope the Swiss army never has to go to war ...
Elementary my dear Watson!
Covering All Base....LP
Maybe it was "upgraded" in 1978.
I would have bet those 2 screws by the control knobs were for grounding purposes...but then there is the 2 by the base of the neck....dunno WTF is going on.
Did it have two pick guards on it at one time Bee Gees style?
A thousand bucks kept you from buying this guitar?
Damn...lol
What kind of pickups do you like?…..Yes.
Trogly, try this: The next to last digit looks like a 3 to me.
looks like it was a session player's guitar
that les paul was shown on MLP years ago
It strikes me as an alcohol-fueled tribute of sorts to Steve Morse's (in)famous Frankenstein Telecaster
Gives me the same kind of creepy feeling as looking at an image of a 3 eyed person 😳
Just file it😂🎉in the mussel file
This is nothing against the Spinal Tap 8 pickup LP....😂😂😂
When life imitates art imitates life.
Hey at least now you can calculate a solid guess at a meme markup %.
Ah that’s nothing I just made one with 5 magnetic pickups and 2 piezos 🤣
and now it’s being listed as a 73
Brings Toy Story to mind with the kid butchering he’s toys…
Mess Paul
Have you ever seen the Les Paul on the headstock of a Les Paul put on upside down. Just curious.
Wasn't there one of those in the demo shop once? I vaguely remember Trogly commenting on that for some guitar quite a while ago.
@@tei1337 I saw one on a forum video. I don't know if it was real , so I was wondering if Trogly has ever seen one.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Ugh.
LMAAAo Some sort of a Mouse
12:13 - 😵💫That would prove you’re more insane than this guitar.
Mouse Routes😂
Great video as always!!
Any plans to have any of the new Fender Vintera II models on your channel??
I'm particularly interested to know whether the Thinline Tele has a neck route that will take a humbucker 😂
I'm waiting for single coils with only a single coil.
That’s horrific 😮
$1200 is too much fror that monster lol!
lol,,yoou have buyed a false headless..the one on the first pic was more to the side..the head..pluss more, what did you pay?
The every pickup Les Paul was a righty the whole time, this is ths worst day of my life.
A mute? A screw on either side of the neck?
Definitely a pickguard on each side, you can see the screwhole in the top body edge where the bracket would have been
No demo. Bummer. Pete Townsend Gold Top number 3 concept gone mad.
I'd always heard the payola schemes had to do do with the record companies paying DJs to spin selected records to create popularity of the songs they chose to promote. Maybe you should've held this episode back for October since someone do a horrific job at modding this Les Paul. Is that 18 guage speaker wire i see in that ate up cavity? Personally i wouldn't entertain half whst that guy wants for the guitar even with the display case. Did anyone get a look at the three neck guitar thats been on the internet? Well actually it is three necks from what i understand used to make an extra extra long neck.
Payola guitar
You forgot an apostrophe in your thumbnail
Maybe owned by a Studio Musician?
Yes
I like how the two screws and neck pickup ring make a little smiley face. Lol
