Peter Gabriel is tbe only performer who was attacked by the lighting rig, Lol!!
Another astonishing Gabriel moment is Lay Your Hands on Me, live in Athens. He falls onto the audience and is lying on a bed of hands and he gets carried very far out by all the grasping hands, he keeps his body rigid so that he won't collapse and get trampled, he just gets pulled along in every direction until security manages to pull him in, it is truly a legendary moment..
Lay your hands on me is my favourite song from this concert. And he loses his white jacket in the crowd. 😅
That crowd surfing was probably part of every concert on that tour... at least it was seen in Helsinki too (did keep his jacket on though - if I recall it correctly). My friend was able to touch PG while that surf - he swore he wouldn't wash his hand ever. I believe he unfortunately wasn't able to keep that promise😁.
Absolutely one of the best gigs I've ever witnessed.
@@hape3778 So memorable.
Try watching the first track from the live “Secret World” video “Come Talk to Me” all about the break up of Gabriel’s first marriage. It will blow your socks off, not just the song but the staging, incredible!!
FYI. CTtM is about his daughter, Melanie, and the breakdown of communication in her teens.
Incredible show. Saw in Toronto in summer of 93.
Hi Guys, so nice to actually see a live video of Peter Gabriel. His live performances are always something special. Seen him above the stage walking upside down on video on track "Downside Up". He had his daughter with him singing. It is on u.t. Amazing ! This video of him much earlier and younger is so good to see. I love the fact he did the song live with a totally different feel and arrangement. I'm sure he could have recreated the studio version, but the fact he chose not to, just shows the brilliance of the man. You just don't know what he is going to do next when live on stage. So lucky you got to see him. This was great, thankyou for showing. Byee Jim X
Peter is one of a kind. Great singer and great sense for the theatrics.
Gabriel = master songwriter, master showman and theatrics... I've seen him 8 times over the years, and no other artist comes close live. This concert film was shot/produced by Martin Scorsese btw. Please watch San Jacinto from the Secret World Tour (it's Gabriel at his peak performance wise IMO).
When it comes to live performances it doesn't get any better than Peter Gabriel. Saw him 3 times live ....just fantastic.
As mentioned by Mark below, you must see 'Lay Your Hands on Me' live in Athens. It combines stage presence, courage and vulnerability for one's art like no other performer
Kate Bush performs backing vocals on the album version.
The album version personnel:
Peter Gabriel - lead vocals
Kate Bush - backing vocals
David Rhodes - guitar
Robert Fripp - guitar
John Giblin - bass guitar
Dick Morrissey - saxophone
Larry Fast - synthesizers, processing
Phil Collins - drums
Morris Pert - percussion
It does sound somewhat different.
If you are having issues hearing yourself talk, if the music isn't playing, just remove the headphones, or at least one side.
Wow, yeah, the live version is cool but really disappointing if expecting the album version.
Loved the reaction. This was second concert ever. Gabriel fan for life since. The Forum in Montreal was life changing concert. I saw Secret World in Toronto in summer of 1993 and just as good in a different way. As you pointed out its his stage presence. At times it's like watching a theatre production. Gabriel released album So and Genesis just released Invisible Touch. This and the Station? album are only 2 Genesis albums I never listen to but in fairness they made a pile of dough. This whole concert is this good(and better) with songs like Mercy Street and Lay Your Hands on Me as major highlights. Worth checking out in full for sure. Fun time👍👍❤
Saw him recently and we still have Tony Levin, Manu Katche, and David Rhodes in the band!!
Peter's stage productions in the 80s-90s were (IMO) the best in rock history. The "Secret World" concert is still my favorite. The full concert is here... ua-cam.com/video/6z-fevPXOTs/v-deo.html
Yes my favourite too!
Both So and Secret World were brilliant in their own ways. Both 5 stars.
Yeah, I saw this tour in D.C. which included the attacking lamps, which returned for the performance of Mercy Street and it still ranks in the top 5 concerts I've ever seen. A truly sublime experience.
I started seeing Live, both Peter Gabriel, and of course, separately, Genesis, in 1978. To Their, My, initial Impressions, in a Moment.
First, here, a few Corrections. The Four (Anthony Phillips, Peter Gabriel, Michael Rutherford, and Tony Banks, Schoolmates at Charterhouse Public School) formed Genesis while in School, sometime circa 1968. Theirs, noted and described, was a "Democratic" Operation, regarding Song Creations. When Ant, and Drummer, Peter Mayhew, left the Band after Touring the 1970 Trespass Album, Steven Hackett and Phil Collins joined the Band. The remaining Three Originals, were then, (seen by the new Two Band Members), as the Dominant Band Stewards. Steve, early irked to the Group's Dynamic, Phil, "Happy for the Ride", (he, earlier, a Child Stage Actor, more of a bit of a "Court Jester"). A "Push/Pull" Dynamic, arose between "Pushy Peter" (to his insistence to Self- Costuming) and to his Best Mate, "Pull Back Tony", to how to hone the Band's Stage Presentation, arose onward. When Peter left in May of 75', the remaining Four Members, were brought back to an earlier, but a bit less so, Democratic Form of Band Directiveness. When Peter left, Mike and Tony were more of the Directors. Phil became the Band's 'Face' as Lead Singer. Phil's first Solo Project, 1980's, 'Face Value', entered a Year after Tony Banks first Solo Project, 1979's, 'A Curious Feeling'. What was witnessed here, to Peter Gabriel's 1986, PG's Fifth Solo Album, 'So', was of Peter, exploring, a (Wink Wink), "Rock Star" Persona. - More here, to my earlier mentioned Impressions to see Pete and Genesis Live for the first Time, in the soon to be Future.
Earrings = OUTSTANDING!
Phil played drums on the studio version. Peter was into not using cymbals and soon after Phil took the idea for In the air tonight
Gabriel always has a great live show. Saw him in Ottawa... exceptional.
When you have Manu and Tony laying down the beat you know you are in good shape. Any by the way who has aged better than Peter Gabriel at this point?
I’ve seen every PG tour
Each one is a unique experience
Really excellent version - completely true to the original while being quite different at the same time.
Just a fantastic song!
Phil Collins played drums on a lot of this album. Peter told him not to use cymbals. So Collins new sound was instigated by Gabriel on his album and Phil ran with it and changed it to fit his solo stuff and Genesis.
Wonderful version of this song!!
Great reaction to a great tour. You have to watch 'Lay Your Hands on Me' from this show. It's stunning!!!
Manu Katché (drums) and Tony Levin, are always an awesome rhythm section 🙂. Very Percussive song, really liked it LIVE. Been awhile to hear this song and album.
The studio version is very different and very good too with Robert Fripp on guitar Phil Collins on drums and Kate Bush on vocals also. Well worth comparison.
Agreed👍
All time genius in the house........
This is even getting better cause it smoothly moves to Mercy Street
I listened to PG Plays Live a ton and my head goes straight into the bass line from I Don't Remember after this.
This song leading ito Mercy Street is other level good.
Manu Katche plays DRUMS.French MUSICIAN...🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Amazing drummer.
We lost David Sanborn today. Miraculous talent and all time sweet person. Played on so many great tunes.
What!? Aw man! I used to watch him with Letterman and later his show "Night Music" with Jools Holland.
- Rest In Peace.
The great drummer, Manu Katche!
PG’s first four self-titled albums (Rainy windshield, Scratch, Melt, and Security) are filled with amazing material. You can really see his evolution culminating in “So” and “Us”.
Around the time of “Melt” he started writing from a rhythm track and using a Linn drum machine. This was a revolution from more traditional songwriting. The stage shows became increasingly elaborate and artistic as he started to employ and collaborate with sophisticated visual artists.
The live album that came after “Security” was a big step. The Athens show that was in this video was a next step, and the videos from the “Secret World” tour (following the release of “Us”) is a real high point.
Agreed👍
Manu, one of my fave drummers. Great style, and with Levin . . . on another level.
@@Pirates_of_the_Underground_IManu, Collins, Bruford, Narada, Jack DeJohnette, Max, Blakey, Elvin, Tony Williams, Michael Shrieve. There’s my rough top ten not necessarily in order. Some days it looks a little different.
He is "The Voice" I saw him back in
the mid 70's This was way before
he became popular. He could really
command a stage and his show
was absolutely stunning. With
the highlight being "Lay your hands
on me" as he fell into the arms of the
crowd. As he was carried up to the
center break of the theater, A fan in
the crowd was waiting there dressed
as a flower. Just like he used to dress for Genesis. He gave him a big embrace.
I saw Gabriel in 1993 in Tacoma, Washington for the Secret World tour featuring the "Us" album. You can find this (in Italy) and it was the best concert I've ever seen.
Saw in Toronto in summer of 93. Sensational.👍
12:45......SO Peter Gabriel is walking down my isle, I'm about 4-5 seats away from Peter Gabriel and he has a little drum he is beating as he and his band walk by to the stage. They are playing "The Rhythm of the Heat" off of the Security album. You know that part when Gabriel is howling in the song ? That's when he gets on stage....That is how the 1982 show started....@ The Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.
I too was there in San Francisco.😊
There is only one Peter Gabriel what a great performance from a great band. I have always loved Peter Gabriel’s solo works the most. Great request Joe and a perfect reaction, so glad you did the live. The original recording is also a must listen. I wish I had been there, maybe in an alternate life in a parallel universe. Ya never know 😳🤔
Great performance! I would highly recommend also taking a listen to the original studio version of this song (Peter Gabriel 3) which includes backing vocals by Kate Bush.
Family Snapshot is a great song from this same album
A great request Joe. I hadn't seen this before so I'm very happy! Peter often played around a lot with arrangements and this version is much smoother and jazzier than the studio version on Peter Gabriel 3, which is much more edgy and spiky. A great album that definitely separated him from the crowd at that time (1980).
Well said. The theatrics of this entire performace are next level. Worth a watch start to finish.
i saw PG on the WOMAD tour in 93 or 94. All day festival with James, Drummers of Burundi, Jah Wobble, Crowded House (!!!), and opening before Peter Gabriel a new guy, Lenny Kravitz! Gabriel's band had Tony Levin and Bill Bruford and Sinead O'Connor came out to sing a duet. Best show I've ever seen hands down.
A tune I always liked by Gabriel is Digging In The Dirt, check it out.
I have two special tips: Focus, "I need a bathroom" and Steppenwolf "Just for tonight".
Please react to the next song from the Athen concert too: "Mercy street" It beginns just as this song has endet with Peter lying on the floor. Or do "Lay your hands on me" - Atenas 87 from the same concert.
Or why not reacting to the entire "secret world live concert" in one long video?
Acá estamos saludos 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷☝️
This is different from the studio track, but the studio track is still better.
Hey fave couple. You know PG wrote this song about dogs. 😂. Just open up a snack at any part of the house ( yes even first floor to third floor) and somehow dogs know and they have no self control and find you where you are eating the snack. 😅. Great job on this you two. I said it before and I’ll continue to say it BCOY (best couple on UA-cam). 👏🏻
This live performance of NSC is the best.
And no, Phil has never been the leader of Genesis (recent american fans believed it). Always have been Mike and Tony. They intend all together to change radically their sound and recording approach with Abacab (81) which benefit of course of the explosion to success from Phil. Phil was only a third of the band and he first came as a drummer who can do arrangements. But the goal to be more pop was shared by the band since I know what I like (73). Phil was and still is huge friend of Peter, in 80 he did play drums on Peter's third album. An accidental manipulation of mikes gave this distorded huge live sound, which Phil asked Peter ask if he can use it on his first solo album. There's the story.
Please, do the studio version. It's just outstanding.
A London (Earl’s Court) date on this tour was the very first gig I saw live. I caught the bus the 80 miles to the city with my best friend when we were 16 in 1986. It was basically this concert and he played this. So “So” good ❤❤
Robert Fripp on the original and the whole album I think. Phil Collins on drums, too, and working on this led to the drum sound he used on “In the Air Tonight.”
You nailed it on that connection. Nice! 😊
The album “Peter Gabriel 3” - a masterpiece.
At the same venue, I later saw Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (1989) and Pink Floyd (1994)
Saw them at 15 in Montreal. Life changer.
this whole record is FIRE
Phil played drums on the studio track.
Awesome earrings Lex
OH YA !
Try the song Lay Your Hands on Me from from the same show. You will be blown away!
Agreed
Great album if you get chance to listen too
F1rst! PG always welcome. Thanks, Joe.
This was great and I whish I would have caught that performace. However you should know that this was a very loose randition of this song. Not better nor worst but very different. Almost like 2 different songs. For that reason, in order to really know the song, you must hear the studio version. THIS WAS AWESOME, I must say.
Have you ever seen the Brian Pern documentary series... If you're a PG fan it's a must!
Grrr. You need to do the studio version. I saw Peter on the So and Us tours. I’ve seen Phil live more than any other artist. Seen him solo, with Genesis, drums for Robert Plant and drums for Eric Clapton.
The studio version of "No Self Control" on Peter Gabriel's third album is better because it has more tension and mystery. Here it's softer and more relaxed. Not my thing to say the least!
I wouldn't say Phil was the leader post-Gabriel. The songwriting was mostly shared between Banks and Rutherford up to Face Value. If you look at the interviews the band did for the rereleases of their catalogue (with Gabriel and Hackett participating), you can still feel the power struggles in the interaction - with Tony Banks coming through as a bit of tyrant i must say. Collins was the easy-going one in the 70's. You end up understanding why Gabriel and Hackett had to leave to find their full artistic expression.
Steve Hacketts band
is amazing live!!!
Peter give me REALeorld and WOMAD when good music was hard to find, . FULL STOP
Must say I much prefer the original album version to this
I'm just curious, Is my song request from your Buy Me a Coffee program on the list? just curious
A lot slower/jazzier and less unhinged/urgent than the studio recording. And no marimbas. 🤔 Still a vibe, though.
Hello, if you want to have an audience in Spanish. Subtitles and Spanish.. Thank you and hugs
Love Peter's stuff. imho, Genesis after Wind & Wuthering pulled away from the moving creative music of the OG. After this, Phil's is less for me. just my onion, Cheers
I prefer earlier live version from the album “Peter Gabriel Plays Live”. This one is not as good as the earlier performances.
They are all amazing.
Crappy version
Mike and the Mechanics, which of course is Mike Rutherford's band, are starting a Tour. It's supposed to be a big one, you may get to see him. It's a great concert, Mike Rutherford is very talented and he has a great band.
