- Traveling to a new country often means experiencing unique culture shocks. Today, I’m going to be going over what stuck out to me as the weirdest things Italians do, after traveling extensively in Italy and being exposed to Italian culture for years. So, without further ado, let’s get started and learn about some of the strangest things in Italy for foreigners.
First: Italian Kissing Culture
Just as France has its famous la bise, Italy also has a prominent kissing culture. When meeting friends and family members, Italians give each other 2 or sometimes even three kisses on the cheek. You start on the other person’s left cheek, but don’t actually make contact with your lips unless you are really close to the person you are greeting. The most surprising part about Italian kissing culture, especially in the South, is that even men will kiss when greeting each other.
Second: Italian Mammoni
Another way in which Italy breaks with its macho stereotypes is in how long young Italians, especially young Italian men, live with their parents. Many of the reasons behind these statistics are of course economical, as Italy has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in Europe. Societal factors also come into play, as family is traditionally very important in Italian culture and there isn’t a big stigma associated with living in the family home. There is, however, a subsection of Italians who live at home in their 40s and beyond that Italians call mammoni, meaning mama’s boy. Mammoni are overly dependent on their mothers, even after moving out or getting married.
Third: Italians Work Weird Hours
Not only will most shops close for a few hours in the afternoon and for several weeks in August, but most Italians break for one of two hours in the middle of the day to eat lunch. Furthermore, Italians receive a minimum of 20 days paid holiday time per year.
Fourth: Italians Wear America-Themed Clothing
It’s common for Italians to wear America-themed clothing, to the point where it’s more or less become a brand itself. NASA clothing is especially popular, particularly among young people, although pretty much every Italian owns at least one item with an American flag, sports team, or city name on it.
Fifth: Italians Eat Dessert For Breakfast
Italians, on the other hand, will eat straight up dessert foods for breakfast. I’m talking about foods like milk and cookies, chocolate croissants, and bread lathered in Nutella. However, breakfast in Italy is usually very light, at least compared to America.
Sixth: Eating Horse in Italy
The average Italian eats 1 kilo of horse meat per year. Consumption is primarily concentrated in the regions of Puglia, Emilia Romagna, and Veneto. All around Italy, you can find butchers shops specializing in horse meat. Common horse dishes include Sfilacci di cavallo (tiny frayings of horse meat), Prosciutto di cavallo (horse ham), and Straéca (horse steak).

Everything listed here is a generalization about Italy. None of these things are meant to be taken offensively or as criticisms of Italy. These are just the Italian habits that caused me to take a second glance as a foreigner.

In Belgium it is a speciality.
You can even eat a sandwich with horse filet.

Breakfast in Italy is light because lunch is supposed to be heavier. My American friend sometimes skips lunch as she is used to eating a bigger meal for breakfast

In fact, most Italians have a full course lunch so breakfast is just a filler till then, for example I'm already cooking lunch and dinner so cooking breakfast too is just too much 😂

@@connorgioiafigliu in addition to this, you have to consider that the full name of breakfast would be "prima colazione", because the actual "colazione" would be lunch 😅 this makes the prima colazione just a preparation to the actual one.
This was true until, idk, a century ago (now hardly nobody says "prima colazione", we say "colazione" and then "pranzo" as you mentioned). It was told us by our literature teacher when he explained how differently the daytime was scheduled back in the days, particularly for farmers and all other workers
In Italy we eat breakfast at start of the day and a little snack called spuntino or stuzzichino about 11.00. At this hour, in schools there is a pause between two lessons called recreation hour (or simply recreation), usually 10 or 15 minutes, but it can be 20 or 30 minutes for kids under 7 or 8 years old classes.
Why is eating horse strange? It's the best meat ever, low in fat and high in proteins and iron.
Haha I agree! If you think about it, there really isn't a bug difference between eating horse and something like cow. But in America, you would never see it!

It's actually funny because I am originally from the center of Italy and then moved to the north to study, and I remember when my flatmate asked me "wanna eat some horse meat?" and I laughed thinking he was joking. He wasn't lol, but up until that moment I had no idea that there were people eating it

Italians actually eat boar too and I personally love it, especially boar salame or boar ragu which is made in the center regions with wonderful tagliatelle!

in the little city i was born (Borgomanero, Novara province, Piemonte) there is "Tapulone" According to a legend, the recipe was created by thirteen hungry pilgrims who, returning from a visit to the sanctuary of San Giulio d'Orta , stopped in the place where Borgomanero stands today . Having run out of food supplies, they cooked a donkey that followed them. To mitigate the hardness of the animal's meat, these were finely chopped and cooked for a long time in wine. The company liked the dish so much that it convinced them to settle permanently in the place of the meal, where a village was founded which formed the nucleus of today's Borgomanero!!!!

I live in Northern Italy and I never kiss friends or family on the cheek when greeting them, I just say hi or sometimes I give em a hug
I'm from the north too. I don't miss either unless someone leans in but it's very rare. I think it's more used in the south.
the part about the weird hrs...is partly true. italian normally works 40 hrs per week..same as in the rest of the world. It s true that some shops, specially in the small towns/villages closed for abt 3 hrs from 12:30 till 15:30. Now days however, in the main cities shops are open all days from 9/10 till 7:30/8. Some supermarkets are open till 22 or midnight too.

Try to live in UK. After 17:30/18:00 all the shops are shut! Only pubs and big supermarket are open.
It's 40 hours per week anyway because the hours are usually 8-12 and 15-19 (or 14-18). To have a shop open all day it has to be a big shop with workers on different shifts
5:20 our logic is: our body needs sugar to start the day with energy, but it has to be light so we won’t have stomach problems during the morning, because our body is still waking up (that’s why we also drink coffee, a healthy and light drink with caffeine)

@Gaia Ahahaha ma io mi riferisco al momento in cui ci si presenta e si fa conoscenza, almeno qui in Veneto è visto come modo appropriato per salutarsi e congedarsi con una ragazza (e ancor più con una donna di una certa età dato che le vecchiette sono generalmente più legate a questi formalismi rispetto alle nuove generazioni come la mia). Poi il bacio sulla guancia non è legge ovviamente e in genere può andare più che bene anche il semplice saluto con la mano, anzi di questi tempi col covid è decisamente consigliato quest’ultimo 😂 Sarà interessante vedere se e come a fine pandemia questo distanziamento sociale prolungato avrà influenzato le modalità classiche di saluto, e quali cambiamenti potrebbero concorrere al riguardo

As you said eating horse is a specific tradition only in a few cities/regions here in Italy. Puglia, Veneto and the city of Parma 😉 actually, the large majority of people I know has never eaten horse and would never do
Actually I think is not eaten only in the center. Here in Turin there are specific butchers for horses (since weirdly you can't sell it with other meats)

Cool video. I spent a lot of time in Bassano a few years back and a couple of the things you listed here always had me confused. Firstly the local shops closing for around 2 hours during the day. Being from London where shops are nearly always open this was a tough one to get used to. Also the being kissed 3 times by EVERYONE took a lot of getting used to but by the time I got back to London I was expecting the locals to do it to me ... didnt happen. Cool channel, I'll leave another comment on Reddit aswell.
That was pretty much my experience too! When my Italian friend introduced me to her grandma, she was personally offended when I forgot to kiss her 😂

@@connorgioiafigliu when is cooked as a steak it loosely reminds of game meat, is definetely VERY good but can catch you off guard if you're expecting something more like beef. In its prosciutto or even more salame form is at its best though in my opinion. :)

Man, in our region Lombardy and however in Northern Italy, especially near Alps, we eat donkeys too... "Stracotto d'asino" (roughly "Overcooked donkey") is a specialty; it's very good. I told this fact to an Indian fellow, and he went mad ! Even for some of us Italians, Sourtherners, it's an odd thing. But I think they don't regret it, Southern Italy has a ton of excellent recipes. Another horse dish that may interest you is Bresaola, with horse meat. It's made especially in the province above mine, Sondrio, and is excellent.

It is true that my middle eastern male friends also do this cheek kissing. In my home country, we also have a very macho culture, so I would never kiss my male friends on the cheek. But with male friends from other countries, I wouldn't mind. Furthermore, I wouldn't be very vulnerable infront of my male friends from my home country, but I could easily be, with male friends from other countries. Nice video bro.

Depicting Italy Is waaaay to difficult , there are a lot of things that you say that are far from the reality of where i live, right in the center of Italy, but It's more than fine, you are doing a great job at giving a general idea of Italy without using big stereotypes and that Is a breath of fresh air.
For a fact, a lot of discussions are made for "Polentoni" Always seen as cold and attached to Money , and "terroni" way to passionate and obnoxious (of course, this Is not a definition for each individual) but the center, even if It hasn't a stereotype Mame, Is Always seen as a Place where people keep all things for themselfs , very warm and welcoming when becoming Friends with them, but very difficult to approach .
Even then , dividing Italy in only 3 main parts (south, North, center) doesn't give Justice to the variety of dialects, traditions and foods we all have.
Even between comuni , here in Umbria , we have a lot of competition , we Always think that we are Better than the others, but none the less , we are usually on good terms when the time comes to communicate.
Just wanted to give my two cents about It, to experience the true Italy, you must visit the whole boot, there is no way around It , each region feels like a totally different world (once went ti Sardegna, Just the landscape was so unusual that It almost felt alien )

Hi ^_^ yes it's true in some region there is the tradition to eat horse meat. It's because time ago the horse meat was cheaper than the other kinds of meat like beef and since Italian cuisine was born as simple/poor cuisine this thing is remained in the tradition even now 😅 anyway great video 👍

Horse is also eaten in France and Belgium. One of the popular versions is a kind of salami called 'Boulogne' which is mainly horse meat. The 'Boulogne' is appreciated because of the combination of the sweeter horse meat and the salt present in all salamis. Horse meat is often imported from South America e.g. Argentina.
I had a horse meat lasagna in Innsbruck! The only time I had ever seen it on a menu! And I love the double kissing is also in southern Germany and Austria.

@@connorgioiafigliu In whole Europe you can find horse meat butchers. It is not a matter of geography of countries close to Italy... Eating horse meat is so common in Europe that it is part of the culture. In Polonia they eat more horse meat than Italy and in France is a very luxury dish.
Even in Three Musketeers book or some Charles Dickens tales you find scenes of eating horse meat roasted in inns (In the Pickwick Papers if I recall it well) and it is not simply a fact of different ages culinary habits... 🤣🤣🤣
Country in the world that consumes more horses is Mexico, followed by Argentina and Kazakhstan. Fourth comes Mongolia where horses have been always a relevant food resource for millennia. 🤔

In tutta Napoli dove vivo, conosco una sola macelleria che vende carne di cavallo e l'ho scoperta per caso perché era vicina ad una gelateria molto rinomata in città. Se vedi i video dell'Influencer UA-cam Nicolò Balini, giovane assai famoso in Italia, lui che è onnivoro e ha mangiato di tutto, presenta la carne di cavallo (e di asino) mangiata in una paninoteca a Catania in Sicilia come una curiosità.
La carne di cavallo si consuma in Italia, ma sempre nelle stesse zone geografiche precise (Emilia Romagna e Veneto al nord in testa, e Puglia e Sicilia al sud) ma sono sempre gli stessi consumatori fissi IMHO per motivi storici a preferirla...
I'm Italian - quite apart from the fact I've been a vegetarian since I was 18, I live with a husband (also Italian) who eats meat but would never eat horses. I also know plenty of Italians who also would never eat horse meat - there's quite a few, in fact. I wouldn't generalize about the horse meat thing, it's not universal here in Italy.

Regarding breakfast people forget to understand that while we have a very small breakfast we many times eat a panino, fruits and similar mid morning. The main point is that we don’t cook our food in the morning.

Hi! In Italy actually eat a lot of wild and uncommon animals but don’t do it on everyday basis, since it’s not so easy to find these kind of animals due to hunting regolation laws, surely you can’t find it in the supermarkets. I addiction to that, i must say that nowadays we have easy access to proteins or meats and it doesn’t even cost that much, so we are shocked about someone eating this kind of food. The consumption of meats like frog, donkey or even cat became popular during fascism period and war time, because people literally had nothing else to eat. They ate what they found. In China they eat dogs, in Thailand they eat mice, in South America they eat crocodiles and in the usa it’s easy to find a buffalo steak.
Last but not least I would like to say that these are regional delicatessen, for example, i’ve eaten snails and porcupines but i never ate horse or donkey

I know typical Italian dishes with "unusual" animals like horses, donkeys, frogs, snails, roe deers, deers, rabbits, cats (but now it's forbidden), pigeons, pheasants. Someone also eats coypus and there's also a typical cheese with worms (you actual eat a cheese with living and moving worms in it). But porcupines...?

Most Italians will take one or two hours in the middle of the day to eat lunch? That's not correct. Northern Italy is predominantly industrial, and factory workers have very little time for lunch breaks. In big cities like Milan or Verona, for instance, stores are always open. Market vendors are not taking any particular break, they eat when it's lunchtime, but if a customer shows up they interrupt the lunch and help them. PS. I've never had horse meat in my life. I'm not vegan, most comments written by Italians make me want to become a vegetarian, though.
You're right, I definitely should have worded that better. My bad! The problem is I made this video for other Americans who might want to visit Italy. So I was mostly referring to the workers that tourists tend to interact with (in restaurants or small shops that close in the middle of the day) and not the average Italian working in a factory/office. It's very unusual for these places to close in the middle of the day in the United States, which is why an American might consider it "weird." But what I didn't expect was that mostly Italians would end up watching this video 😂
Talkin about goin away from our homes, the fact is that, if you' re going to university you are forced to stay at home with your parents, we do not have colleges in here, the only alternative is an appartament in the same city you study in, so until you are 24 in the majority of the cases, you won't leave. Than, as you said, here there are no available jobs for youngsters, and trust me, most of the times americans talk about old kids living with parents as if it was something that we like, but trust me, it is one of the most humiliating things ever. I hate it when i hear " italians live with their parents" trust me, it is not that easy expecially here in northen italy, in southern italy it is a much more acceptable and well seen thing, and i don't know why.
Exactly. Most people living abroad don't understand how difficult it is too find a good, decent-paid job in Italy when you're young. They only believe in all those silly stereotypes and don't really know what is like living here.

This time unfortunately I couldn’t relate to most things u said, maybe because I live in Piemonte an 1 hour away from Milan, but here non many American clothes, everybody is always fancy and elegant here, and not many mammoni here, maybe because it’s the north and because of the huge economical difference between the north and south
eating Horses is not that common in Italy as you think... me my family and friends have never eaten horses meat.... or not so often maybe one or twice in their lives... but unfortunatly many italians eat rabbits and bunnies (I don't). But it is an interesting video! you got a new subscriber!

True, like is not easy find sparkling wine in the center of Italy they are more focused on still wine, while in some north region finding sparkling wine is easier. Sometimes we eat frogs but only in special occasion is not a kind of food you eat everyday or often

It’s sweet to hear your perceptions. You are not wrong, but you’ve missed some of the more intricate reason why. For instance why there are long lunch breaks. Why men live at home until married. Traditions are incredibly important, even if no one removers why it became a tradition.

As an italian I've never met someone here who actually eats horse meat
è una cosa molto regionale, però la bresaola di cavallo soprattutto al nord è un piatto abbastanza comune. c'è dai dire che nel tempo se ne mangia sempre meno perché gli allevamenti di cavalli diminuiscono e perché non è così economica come altri tipi di carne.
You can tell, in Parma we eat raw minced horse meat called “cavallo pesto” with different seasonings like garlic oil, lemon, mustard, olives and vegetables...and it is bloody good (other than very healthy as horse meat doesn’t have much fat so it is almost all protein and is very rich in blood iron)
There's a reason why people in Italy usually take a long time leaving their parents' house: cost of life, uncertainty of job, low salaries.
In US cost of life in absolute sense is usually higher compared to Italy, but in relative terms cost of life in US is way lower.
An average salary in Italy is around 1000-1500 euros per month (yes salaries are paid monthly in Italy, so you'll get your paycheck only every month and not every week),
so if you consider that the average price renting a house in some of the main cities is around 1000-1500 euros, it's easy to understand that it is quite difficult to move out, so it's not about not wanting to, it's just freakin difficult to have enough money to get your own place, and we're talking about rental!
So if your annual gross salary is around 20k euros it means either you pay for a house or for food...and then you also have to pay taxes and maybe live?
In US having salaries over 65k is quite common, so at the end of the day you can save more money, get a house and do what you like, even if you have to pay for insurance and if many things are more expensive, your buying power is still way higher compared to Italy.
P.S. Eating horse meat is not common at all in Italy, what about cricket spitting contests in US? I think that's quite weirder, and I've even seen lollipops with crickets inside.
I just want to point out that I eat bread with extra virgin olive oil with (if I have them) fresh tomatoes. I think bread with evo oil is very important thing in my life as an italian.
Do not rely too much on statistics: it is true that horse meat is eaten, in Italy, but only a minority of Italians do it. As to me, I never did it in my life.
Sono molto legato a Puglia attraverso alcuni amici che mi hanno fatto assaggiare la carne equina diverse volte. Ammetto che non e' una cosa molto comune in una gran parte d'Italia, ma si puo almeno trovare delle persone che l'hanno assaggiata e delle macellerie che la vendono. Questa e' la cosa "strana" per un americano. Negli USA la vendita di carne di cavallo e' proibita! Qua invece abbiamo le palle di toro 😉

about 55/60 years ago when my young parents would have to buy horse meat, it was seen as a thing poor people would do because it was the cheapest meat here in the north of italy, right now is almost out of budget... things change a lot in a few years
