I’m Canadian and 49 years old. My wife and I FINALLY went to the Maritimes for the first time ever just a few weeks ago. New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia. Was amazing. We live in Alberta and only ever travelled as far East as Quebec City. We decided to finally see the Maritimes instead of going to California for the 100th time.

A good tip when travelling in Atlantic Canada is to stop at Irving Stations. They often provide the most services and often have a restaurant. In fact, in many areas it is favourite restaurant of the local people. These restaurants are ofen independently run; not your standard McDonalds or subway type of place. If you like Subway you might want to try Quiznos.

Lived all my life in NB and only ever drove by Grand Falls. Miramichi City and up and down the Miramichi River is great (lived there 29 yrs) and Saint John on the Bay of Fundy and the Saint John River Valley is fantastic (been here 21 years). Many other great gems in the province as well, guess that’s why many of us never moved away or those who have move back to NB again. Enjoy & safe travels….ps. Canadian Tire is a national treasure!

@@AdventuresofAplusK we just got back from NFLD, we saw icebergs and Puffins. Twillingate allowed people to park and camp in many areas. The free seats on the ferry are like airplane seats, so Cabins aren’t necessary. Springdale has a glassy beach too.

As a man from Nb, I always found it fascinating how many American tourists we get, while other Canadians seem to hate our province for being boring and “nothing but trees”.
Our provinces is a bit of a hidden gem. The trans can highway is sheltered by forest from Quebec to NS, so most people driving through don’t get to see any of it.
The communities are mostly coastal, and along the St. John river(like grand falls). The interior is the tail end of the Appalachian mountains, so like large rolling hills, and heavy forest mainly for logging.
The coastal towns along the eastern seaboard are beautiful and infrequently visited by outsiders. Here you will find great food, Acadian culture, and endless sandy beaches.
Speaking of “Acadian”, the “Maritimes” that we know today are the 3 provinces which used to comprise old Acadia.
This was one of the first permanently settled regions in Canada, where the French and Mi’kmaq allied to form a proto-nation.
Unfortunately, the French king abandoned the region and ceded it to England as part of a war treaty, who then came in and oppressed the people.
Homes, monasteries, farms, and other properties were either stolen or burned town, women raped and Mi’kmaq killed and scalped.
This led to militia resistance against the English soldier who used it as justification to enact an exile.
The great expulsion was a genocide that made it illegal to be French or Mi’kmaq in Acadia under penalty of death. Many escaped to Louisiana and became known as “Cajuns”.
Many also escaped north into the forests until the genocide was called off and French Canadians were given rights. Unfortunately the First Nations people would continue to be oppressed up until 1982 when they finally also received equal rights.
The British split Acadia into 4 states/provinces, one of which was lost to the US(New Ireland, also known as “Maine”.)
The parts of Acadia that were still predominantly Francophone was given to Quebec(Gaspé peninsula north of NB, and the Magdalene islands east of PEI).
Britain then filled this territory with Scottish and Irish serfs to hold it, with strict population laws on Acadian villages to prevent their numbers growing too large, specifically 10 homes per village, minimum distances away from each other. The ocean became their means of connection, which is why today the maritimes has such a love affinity with the sea.
Since those times, we’ve become a people born from second class citizens of the British Empire.
French, Irish, Scottish, Mi’kmaq, and even Africans who escaped slavery in the US.
That is Acadia today, the maritime culture!
    --
Newfoundland and Labrador were there own country with their own story and culture. They can tell you more :)

    • @Viennery
      @Viennery 11 місяців тому

There is also a great outdoor museum in Caraquet with a collection of homes from around the maritimes to form a walk through time, and see how the people lived and survived.
      “Le village historique acadienne”
You can enter all the homes, and actors will recount the stories of the people who lived there.
It starts in the 1600’s and continues up to the early 1900’s.
It’s my favourite place to go for a walk, especially on the 15 of august which is “Acadian day”, where celebrations become a bit crazy, with le grand tintamarre which is when everyone makes a ton of noise to say “we are still here! You didn’t destroy us! We endure!”
The staff should all be bilingual and able to talk to you in English, even if it’s the more predominantly francophone regions of NB.

I was in northern Maine a few years ago and looked up what was close by in New Brunswick since I hadn't been. Just like Kathryn, the first thing that came up on Google was Grand Falls so I went and it was pretty epic. I also noticed how French and English were both so prominent. Its a unique culture. Great to see that area making it to UA-cam.

Atlantic Canada has Acadian French speakers, unlike those in Quebec. Cajuns in Louisiana are people originally from this part of the world. The Acadiand were expelled from their lands here in the 1750s when the English took over. They were sent on ships to the New England colonies. Some made their way to Louisiana over time.

We just came back from Maritimes.. NB, NS and PEI are gorgeous. We did not go to Grand fall in NB. Thanks for sharing that. I noticed from the short preview video that you guys visited Hopewell rock and Skyline trail. Those are the two major highlights that you cannot miss for the trip. Beaches at PEI are good as well. Have fun in NB, NS and PEI.

These are my old stomping grounds, I will be following, having enjoyed your AK videos.
Good timing for seeing that much water over the falls in Grand Falls. It is a trickle in the fall/winter.
Nice that you got to see a bear 🐻😎
After the all dressed chips, are Ketchup chips on the list? (-:

Grew up going to the Maritimes as a kid with my family from Ontario. Beautiful part of the country. People are super friendly and feels like old time Canada compared to Ontario. Pei and Cape Breton being my favourite parts. Enjoy your trip!

Welcome to Canada! I was born in NB but live in Ontario now. So happy the falls was open when you were there. The zip line must be new.
Timmy’s makes the ice coffee and ice caps with a lot of 18% cream. The almond milk is very good there. My sons like it with milk or chocolate milk.

Welcome to New Brunswick. Make sure you do the Fundy Trail, Fundy National Park, Cape Enrage and Hopewell Rocks. They are one after the other along the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy.

It's Saint John in New Brunswick. St. John's is in Newfoundland. Confusing, I know lol.

They also have Tim Horton's in Detroit, because of the city's proximity to Windsor, ON. Since you are in Canada for a bit, you should connect with Eamon and Bec, who are another couple who vlog about their travels.

If you guys are still in Newfoundland, highly recommend checking out the bonavista area! You will see lots of whales, puffins & so much more.
Definitely check out the boat tours here.
    I’m local to the area🥰

Lotta funny moments in this one guys! Love your authentic enthusiasm for being back in Canada. By the way, Trader Joes makes a potato chip just like the WalMart one. We have a TD here in Redding which makes us very happy ;-)
