  • What does it actually mean when a manufacturer says that their mouse has 8000 DPI? Is a high DPI really that important?

    Now that you explained DPI, could you explain Polling Rate on a mouse? I really can not understand it yet..

    • @MustSeto
      @MustSeto 9 років тому +20

      jtpetino What I understand about Polling Rate is like this... when your mouse detects movement, it sends a "count". But it doesn't go directly to the computer, instead it's put into a "buffer" on the mouse where the counts (and other actions, like clicking) are stored. They are stored here until the USB port checks the mouse, and reads all the data. How fast the USB port checks the data is the polling rate. And yes, it's the USB port checking the mouse, NOT the mouse sending data. Mouse drivers talk to the OS and ask it to poll more or less often.

    • @LoganSnyder

    • @yogalD

      MustSeto Actually polling means the CPU continuously asks the mouse if it's got something to say... if the mouse were to send a signal whenever necessary that would be interrupt-driven. (for example PS/2 keyboards use interrupts, USB mice and keyboards use polling)

      ***** have you ever seen how a ball mouse works? it is actually an optical infrared censor with an infrared led on the other side of a wheel with slots cut into it, each time it sees a bar (it gets a little darker) it counts a "click". they can compound it in a similar way to modern optical mice to get multiple counts per click, but your statement really has nothing to do with the dpi of a mouse, physical damage isn't going to change what the mouse is trying to do. like with any mouse it depends on the mouse what the dpi/cpi is, there are a few ball mice way back there that got as high as a hardware simulated 600dpi, at the time they were pretty competitive with early laser and photo optical mice. with ball mice though in general you are looking at physical cpi of 200 or less with a hard coded software layer that duplexes it.

    • @kght222
      @kght222 9 років тому

      *****
      oh, an as for ball mice being analog..... they are no more so analog than optical mice, and by their very nature mice are analog.

    types of cooling

    • @SmokingCrop
      @SmokingCrop 9 років тому +1

      Simple.
      Water cooling -> for when you want the best cooling with terrible noise production. (so only the really high end ones) although if you really spend a lot of money you can make em quieter again.. but not worth all the money
      Air cooling -> everything else.

    • @Accuracy158
      @Accuracy158 9 років тому

      What are you supposed to say in "as fast as possible"?... Bigger rads offer more cooling but don't fit in all cases. Higher FPI also offers better cooling within the same space but is creates more noise. Tubing sizes don't really matter so get whatever size you like the look of and pressure optimized fans are usually better on radiators.

      e.g. of Q Why one needs a flat pattern and the other works on any surface?

    • @MustSeto
      @MustSeto 9 років тому +1

      motosheep Most modern optical AND laser sensors will work on either surface now. In fact, it seems the laser sensors currently being manufactured are more affected by the surface--they have more acceleration on cloth. Modern opticals just get a slightly higher LOD on hard surfaces. IIRC modern opticals can even track on glass now, but don't quote me on that.

    • @sheepdog94

    @NicholasHatala 9 років тому +8

    I don't know about you guys but I find myself being more accurate with really low dpi settings. When the difference between moving ten degrees left and a full three hundred and sixty degrees is only a couple of millimetres on your mouse pad, I don't see how you can aim accurately.

    • @MustSeto
      @MustSeto 9 років тому

      ***** CPI isn't the only thing which controls the overall sensitivity. The game's sensitivity value also affects it. In fact, theoretically a higher CPI with lower sensitivity setting is better. But because of the way CPIs tend to be artificially inflated, just setting a mouse to its highest CPI is still a bad idea. Besides, lowering that sensitivity value gives diminishing returns, and I'm confident we're at the point where we have high enough legitimate CPI that and additional benefit will be negligible.

      Well yeah, that's not surprising. Some gaming mice even come with DPI shifts. Holding those down will lower the DPI and will make sniping in FPS games more "steady" if you need a lower sensitivity.

    I have a mouse capable of giving 4 dpi speed at a flick of a switch. Usually the second setting is what I have it on (which is 1600 I think) because I like to move my mouse minimally, but when I need a very fast mouse with those minimal movement I can quickly put it on the fourth setting (3200 I think).

    You should use the highest native CPI of your mouse in any game that has a 3D camera. Shooters, action games, 3D platformers, what have you. More counts per inch means a smoother camera. In fact, having a very low DPI will make games like CS:GO, TF2, Quake etc. almost unplayable because your camera will skip entire rows and columns of pixels, making far away targets virtually unhittable.
    Sucks that everyone always forgets this really important detail. High CPI, low in-game sens = Smoother camera. Low CPI, high in-game sens = Pixel-skipping, jumpy, stuttery camera.

      Oh yeah and cod is really hard ? Give me a break cs:go has no competition right now on the competitive side of the game, there is no match for cs:go in any way right now, no game will take it's place in esports. If the game was skill-less it would not be an esports game.

    • @tilty7522
      @tilty7522 7 років тому +10

      Man, there are many ways cod is way fucking easier than cs go, and overwatch has taken the fast paced title now, and I say that as a tf2 player

    • @tilty7522
      @tilty7522 7 років тому +17

      Your point is invalid, cod has aim-assist, grenades do instant kills, recoil is smaller, recoil while walking has no difference of while standing still, knife always instant kills, no complicated movement and mastering of the map required, you get perks, the game is way more easier and unballanced, you can literally walk around instant killing everyone, not to mention there is a killstreak award, no knownledge of weapons required. All I mentioned is opposite from cs go, which is more competitive and skill headed, whilist cod is headed towards casual scrubs that cant aim properly. A true pro fps player that comes from cs:go/ other skill demanding games will always dominate in cod.

    With my Razer DeathAdder Elite and a resolution of 2560x1600 it feels more accurate for me to use 2560 dpi and 1.5 sensitivity in Quake Champions, instead of 1280 dpi and using sensitivity 3 in quake champions. It felt to me more pixel accurate this way.

  • @jpteknoman
    @jpteknoman 8 років тому

    i usually dont go above 1600. the thing about having a mouse with adjustable dpi, is that you can find the perfect sensitivity for your needs, and with multiple dpi presets you can set different sensitivity for different types of games

    One thing he forgot to mention is that a higher dpi (dots per inch) can also be interpreted as pixels per inch. Which in case that most FPS pro gamers run most of their games on 1920x1080 16:9 for better performance and frames per second. Less pixels=less dots per inch. And frames per second is limited by how many hz your monitor can display, whether it be 60hz, 144hz, or 240hz, it will definitely make a higher improvement on your gaming than a mouse or a keyboard.

    So is my Logitech G502 that I actually use on 12,000 dpi is less accurate then a lower setting? I thought this mouse had the most accurate senser on the market...

    • @MustSeto
      @MustSeto 9 років тому +18

      The G502 actually probably is the best mouse sensor ever, but yeah at 12k it's not going to be as good as it would be on a lower setting. But if you compare it to another mouse at the same setting, the G502 will win every time. Really wish they'd use the darn sensor in another mouse shell though, the G502 is so heavy >_

      ***** I don't understand that picture lol, are precision and accuracy not the same thing?

    • @riveraluciano
      @riveraluciano 9 років тому

      It may be accurate, but imagine running that sensor over a speck which it can't fully comprehend as a surface, your cursor will fly.
      That's what Linus refers to, too much of one thing can lead to noise, too much detail wihout proper analysis (sensor), and much more room for reading errors, such as the example cited above.

    My recent deathadder 2013 just broke, so I bought a mouse with all these adjustable dpi settings. I tried standard turning it up to 2400, and decreasing in game sensitivity and Windows, and experimenting with so. It's disgusting, it feels like there's loads of mouse acceleration, almost as if the mouse is on ice. But once I revert back to normal 800 and increase sensitivity in Windows/games, it feels perfect. I don't see what all the hype is around DPI, standard seems to work perfectly fine and it really IS more accurate.

      Javier Gonzalez Jr also if you assign your left/right click to the keyboard the mouse control will be a lot smoother, i personally do this in Zbrush and Photoshop because clicking while dragging tends to be a lot shaky.
