      I feel like most of the complaints for this arc are just very nitpicky or they just blatantly ignore the context of the story at the moment for all of the issues they have not being addressed. When I see people bring up the lack of consequences for Endeavor or Hawks I just question the readership. Who the fuck is going to hold them accountable for their crimes in societies' current state?
      You could argue Hawks' lack of apprehension towards Endeavor is a little weird but Hawks is inherently biased towards him but he is also capable of seeing the man he is now isnt the same as back then.
      I dont have an issue with the power progression at all it makes sense given the context of the story and still comes with adequate risk even fueling deku's self destructive tendencies even more in this arc which was the best part, even if the finish wasnt as good as it could've been.
      I've had to argue with way too many people that cant suspend their disbelief over the top two heroes not being indicted amidst societal collapse or how they clearly get plenty of pushback especially Endeavor for their sins, ala Dabi and failing to keep the public safe. We're literally shown society turning its back on its protectors so hard even the heroes we thought were legit like Death Arms hung up the suit.

    What I dislike the most about the arc is that I never really understood WHY Deku had such a huge change in character. Like I get that a ton of people died, but no one in Shiggy's battle against the characters. If you want to turn Deku into a Batman like character, then kill off someone important to him like his mother or even a classmate and have him witness or even be partially responsible for it. If you don't want to make such huge sacrifices, then don't act like you did.
    Also, this arc was far too short. A character change this big, especially for the main character is something have affects that last for the rest of the story, now it's like it never even happened.

    • @gth839k
      @gth839k Рік тому +37

      This is a good thought, but I don’t think a character needs to die to explain the change. Bakugo sacrificing himself to protect Deku was enough to explain the transition. Deku actually sees and knows that everyone would sacrifice for you, because you are the savior. This is a heavy burden to bear. To me, that was more than enough to explain the transition.

    • @darkwinter2009
      @darkwinter2009 Рік тому +13

      Well, there is a reason why Deku had an entire change of character. This was supposed to give a darker and scarier version of Deku. For about 10 years now since MHA released, a lot of the anime community are always complaining about Deku's crying. They always complain that he is a crybaby and that he cries too much. What I also find ironic is that when Deku eventually went out and changed into an entirely different person, people were now switching up and hyping up Deku acting like he is the best new gen MC of current anime. Also, yeah I do agree with the killing of person. But the problem is which character do we kill off because it has to be a person that Deku extremely cares about.

    • @leritykay8911

      I mean is it really fair to both complain about this being too short, AND not warranted enough? Which would be better? Deku's Mom dying and the arc still being short? That wouldn't make sense. Or maybe the arc being ten chapters longer? What would we even get out of that?

      So the way I see it, it follows that if Deku didn't have a huge reason, then the change wasn't THAT drastic. He was putting on that mask for what, a week?

    My biggest issue here is that For an Arc that is Named ‘Dark Deku’. Midoriya himself feels way too…Restrained. Like I’m not saying that he should Start brutalizing or killing people but I feel like he should be way more Spiteful and Even Pissed at the world throughout the Arc.
    Maybe like,Deku always Had these thoughts but The people Of UA(both whom he looked up to and Looked up to him) kept his Rage in check. But now that they aren’t here,He lets out those feelings in the most cathartic way he can. Beating up People. And more dangerously People that by some means Deserve it.
    Deku has always been a characters that has this very Raw and Almost Unabashed Rage(Like in his Fight with Shoto,or his fight with overhaul and more recently aginst Shigaraki and late AFO)
    And it has always felt like an Anger that isn’t just something of the moment,But its something that Feels that it comes from the depts of his soul.

The weekly reading experience for this arc was incredible and seeing what twists and turns it took was extremely fun to read. Seeing Deku post PLW trying to take on the weight of the world by himself still is so interesting, and I loved it even if it never really got concluded properly. Starting it off with a Deku vs Muscular rematch was an absolutely insane introduction to the final act, and I just wish we got to see more of that. Imagine if Hori started to explore the idea of mutant discrimination in this arc. Imagine if we actually got more interactions with all might and Deku, and a scene of Melissa giving all might the new full gauntlet prototypes. Am I disappointed? Yes. But did I enjoy what was good. The MHA manga tends to reflect the different eras of American superhero comics, and the vigilante Deku arc is an almost perfect deconstruction of the 90s trend of edgy antiheroes. Deku's costume even begins to resemble characters like Venom and Spawn.

      How is it a deconstruction when it doesn't say anything. As someone who has read a lot of comics the only thing that screamed anti hero was his costume getting jacked, nothing truly happened. I don't get how you can call it a deconstruction.

    • @PainCausingSamurai
      @PainCausingSamurai Рік тому +31

      @Jamal Hartley "Deconstruction" may not be the best word, but it seemed the best fit for an arc that simultaneously pays homage to and critiques an era of comics generally defined by loner anti-heros, x-treme aethetics (animalistic poses, torn clothes, accessories, claws, etc.), distrust of authority, and general nihilism. The story has been building up the cracks in hero society for it's entire run, and it finally comes to a head with the formation of the PLF, the failure to stop Shiguraki, and Dabi's public address. Midorya is then seemingly set up to fall into the life of a solo vigilante after his encounter with Lady Nagant, where he'd eventually be forced to gradually lose his humanity and resort to more violent means. The intervention of class 1-A not only pulls Deku out of his downward spiral, but also refutes the very notion of nihilism and solo anti-heros. And they do this not through some saccharine speech about hope and friendship, but by drawing on their shared experiences, acknowledging the failures of the hero society, forcing Deku to see his actions are driven by fear, and demonstrating how much more affective they are working together. It may seem a bit rushed, but I felt it was efficient and effective.

      @@PainCausingSamurai I get that since this the first arc where Deku actually acts like a super hero 😅 so I get why some like it.
      Although violent? Nah. The only thing edgy about Izuku was his costume. He saved a guy who tortured a little girl aka Overhaul during the Nagant fight. So I didn't see that downward spiral you talking about. Would've been cool if we got that though!
      Plus that edge in the 90s was so short lived because it can't last. No one wants to read that every issue so it's focused onto characters who can carry that like Daredevil, Batman, Punisher, and the like.

    • @otterfire4712
      @otterfire4712 Рік тому +15

      I would say it's more of a subversion of 90s edgy antiheroes. Midoriya has been adamant and diligent in fighting villains and saving lives. So diligent in fact, he has begun to neglect self care and has isolated himself from his friends, family, and eventually All Might. He seems to act more like Batman, always vigilant, always out prowling the streets. He looks like a monster, but his actions are quite heroic, leading to mixed rumors in the masses.

If u did enjoy it then I find that it’s successful regardless of the negative things in it, and I can see that you all really enjoy it, but all you do is just focusing on the negative points, just compare the positive points with the negative ones, and you will see that the positive points are much more than the negative ones. There is no perfect series from all sides always People just like to come and spoil the series with their useless comments. What does not make any work successful is because of people's different tastes, so please be grateful for the work without criticizing it because I am sure that every writer has his own style of writing and every writer cares about people's opinions And every writer wants his story to succeed, so please focus on the positive points more than the negative ones and be more grateful for the work.

    My problem with the arc was thanks to a misunderstanding of what was coming due to the fanbase. Everyone spoke do highly of the upcoming "vigilante" arc. So my expectations were for a Deku that was crueler, alone, and chased by the heroes. I wanted him to do things that he somewhat regretted and learn from his regrets. Delve into the flaws of the life of a vigilante, what a man has to go through, what mindset he has to enter to face that path, show at times Deku can hesitate wondering if he made a mistake, but presses on stubbornly, maybe occassionally run into some classmates here and there who try to convince him to come home before the big fight.

    Honestly I get all you're points, but this arc right here is downright my favorite because we finally get to see Deku experimented as a character and his vigilante form looks fire. It looks goated. Although I do have a few problems:
    1. I would've liked it if there has been a chapter dedicated to where the students and teachers mourn the loss of Midnight. There, it would make us remember Midnight much more.
    2. Deku isn't really a vigilante since he has a license. But whatever, if you want to call him "Vigilante Deku", then alright.
    Also I respect you're opinion and it's fine if you don't like My Hero Academia. I know it's not the best well written series. But you're MHA videos look awesome and I'll be sure to check them out myself. :)

Simply put it, if you like it base on how you feel that's fine but going through from a narrative perspective will always take precedence. As much as i myself enjoy this arc, one thing ill not regard as good is the abrupt and erratic switches in time and lack of detail given to him improving his innate abilties and character. No inner conflict, growth in ideology or nuance to how he is developing ( side characters aside) as he is, just a radicalised altruistic hero who wants to remove everything to save everything.

Midnight was one of my top 5 favorite hero and, yes, a little bit because of how they sexualize her but it's because although she is sexualized a lot, she actually does her job of being a hero. She's a hero that likes showing off her body but when she needs to be a hero she acts like a hero. Midnight will definitely be remembered for me but I full on agree that she would be more remembered if they gave her a moment where everyone mourn over Midnight and even a few other hero's that lost their life.

      Ehhh, I keep seeing the comments just defend Deku and one or two comments say: "Finally, I agree", but I just think, personally, that the War Arc and the Vigilante arc is just bad/rushed writing.
      I'm not saying this to be mean or to discredit people's taste in anime shows. People can like what they like and I say this as someone who will finish MHA when the next season comes out. However, when I look back on both the war arc and the vigilante arc, I just see both arcs with bad writing. Sure, there are good points to the arcs, but, as an average anime goer that has invested time into MHA, I can point out the flaws that really bug me greatly in both arcs and I honestly believe that is just bad/rushed writing.
      I don't blame Horikoshi entirely, he could be on a rushed schedule, but I am allowed to look at something I enjoy watching and say: "This could have been done much better."

    Eh. There were things that I agree with, like the main cast's reaction to hawks killing, their mourning of midnight, and having gran Torino die, but all the deku stuff...
    I have absolutely no idea where you got "deku destroys his body because he was discriminated against and he chalks up all of his problems on all might not being there". I don't know why people expected deku to bring up bakugo's bullying when deku's already moved past it, so I don't see what else they could've done (it was always something bakugo needed to get over).
    Might just be me, but I thought deku solving his self worth issues began with him accepting the name "deku" and ended when he chose it as his hero name.
    Personally, I don't see the problem with fa jin, danger sense, or smokescreen. The last two are basically just tools with one of them being something he can't turn on or off. Danger sense is practically spider sense in my eyes, so I don't really see the point of "mastering" it if it even can be. The reason that I don't have a problem with fa jin is because it shouldn't stop deku from using the real 100%. Fa jin is just a build up of a kinetic energy, so if the enemy can stop him from building up that energy, then he wouldn't be able to fake 100%.
    Overall, if I'm wrong in some places or all of it, then I have no problem with that. I'm glad that I at least bothered to watch the video all the way to the end.
    Maybe I'm just an mha shill and I don't acknowledge any of the problems that's currently plaguing the series because I'm honestly enjoying what I've watched and read without any or too many issues. Either way, this was a great video 👍.

      The way I see it in the case of Deku's self-destructive personality stemming from his years of systematic verbal and physical abuse at Bakugo's hands is best illustrated is when he's on that rooftop being told by All Might that he can never be a hero, literally vindicating EVERYTHING that Bakugo had been telling him for the majority of his young life, and further vindicating Bakugo's words that if Deku wants to be a hero then he should just kill himself and hope in his next life he'll have a Quirk. Just imagine that every horrible, uncaring word that you've been told your entire life was just echoed by the hero you've loved and respected your entire life... what would you want to do next on that rooftop? Now imagine that after that, you FINALLY got the Quirk, the POWER you've been longing for your entire life to give all the hardships you've been through over the years meaning and purpose... well, you'd want to keep that feeling wouldn't you? You would never allow yourself to not live up to the expectations of those who gave you such power, to prove people like Bakugo wrong in saying you are worthless, who gave you the power to continue the fight against villainy and evil... even if that meant rending your flesh, breaking your bones, tearing your very body to bloody shreds... because if you did, then you would be back on that roof wouldn't you? Reminded that you are a worthless human being... That you should never have been given this power to begin with... That everything you endured to reach this point was meaningless... That ultimately the best thing you should've done at that moment was take the leap and hope that next time will be better than this one...
      That IS what Midoria's mindset has been throughout the entire series and the person who started all of this was Bakugo. Just because Deku got over his bullying and abuse doesn't mean he's over the trauma of it, of being forced back onto that rooftop facing down his inadequacies every single time he fails to meet everybody's expectations because he wasn't good enough to win and wonder if what's on the other side is the better deal. And so in order for Midoria to finally get over his self destructive attitude, he NEEDS to face its ultimate cause... and the apology wasn't that. What should've happened is that after Bakugo said he was sorry for what he did to Deku, Deku should've then dumped everything he felt back at Bakugo. The years of abuse, the agony of trying to befriend and stand by a boy that would never allow it, the soul grinding of being told day after day that he was, is, and will never be a human being in the eyes of the people around him.
      It is only when both Midoria and Bakugo are made to face the consequences of their actions can Bakugo truly say sorry for what he has done to Midoria and Deku can truly forgive him for it and begin to lay the pains and inadequacies of his past to rest... so that both can finally begin to walk the same path together than Deku had always wanted his entire life...
      Now take this little opinion of mine and compare it to the apology we got in the manga and anime... do you still think that that moment was earned and helped to repair their relationship?

WE didn't really see this dude soloing it for months with no rest against multiple villains, we see him fight 2 or 3 villains and now its a month and he is tired and depressed. So the struggle we see feels kinda empty as we are only really seeing the results of that struggle

    Also: we literally have rewind healing atm in the story. No injuries matter. Aizawa couldn't even hold a flashback to her before cutting his own leg off.

    I don't really care about watching this video, just wanted to comment since it popped up in my recommandations, I haven't been as hooked as I was during the Vigilante arc for a long, LONG while, and it felt really good, every single episode hit me very hard and I felt like every characters relevant to this arc finally went to the direction I wanted to. The Deku VS 2-A battle is probably one of my favourite episode of the whole show, and I cried so much during the Ochako speach haha
    I'm especially glad because as someone who's more into the school focused arc (my favourite arcs being the tournament and the festival, while I have a hard time caring for some arcs like the Endeavor arc) I was a bit afraid going in that they would just forget that this show is called "My Hero Academia". It turned out becomming one of my favourite arc :)

    I love Endeavor, it's easily my favourite part of MHA and one of the main reasons i haven't dropped the series yet, mabye it's me watching MHA in my 30s but watching the actual redemption arc of an adult that made all the wrong choices guided only by it's drive to be the best (wich is often the exclusively positive drive of MCs) really hits home, and his whole character arc is so dense. But then he's exposed nation wide, people in theyr home make some snarky comments during the war, and... nothing, everyone is cool with him now.
    The war was good but in order to work it had to botch many characters and plot points, from Hawks (wich i also really liked but i though could've used a bit more time in the spotlight before and after the Twice incident) to the whole 1A class to goddamn Milio showing up outta nowhere in a way that made me seriously check multiple times if i skipped an episode or two...

      It’s not ignoring what the arc is about, it’s more how it’s executed. Deku pretty much has everyone else talk no jutsu him and accomplish his OWN problems without his own introspective of it. He didn’t have any reflection on the consequences of going rogue or any reflection on his friendship with Bakugou and everyone else in the class. Everyone else talks about his own problems and acknowledge it except himself.
      How are you supposed to properly change if YOU YOURSELF don’t recognize your negative mindset? After PLW the series is getting rushed, and it’s shown by stuff like SnS and the video points this out. If the arc was dedicated to adding more depth to Deku character, it executed in a very poorly matter. This video isn’t even hating on MHA, it’s just not being biased to the series and genuinely pointing at flaws in the writing after PLW.

      The damn arc does a bad job with class 1A, since we never actually get an original thought from them, all we get from them is their damn support for deku.
      We never get any interesting pov moments from the class a characters. They've all got their own shit going on, so focus on that. But nope, it's all izuku this, izuku that, it's annoying.
      And for the "true atmosphere of mha" wdym by that? Is it supposed to be some take on the society as a whole?
      The hero commission being all corrupt is stupid, cuz if they wanted to do all that, then actually put some time into it, instead of just making a mention about it. Build it up. Shit just ended up being completely forgotten.
      The biggest problem with the classmates is that they're just one big hivemind sharing a single damn braincell. They aren't seen as individuals in this thing, just extensions of the damn plot.

      This is an example of why you shouldn't give your villains lethal powers, unless your ready to kill off some of your cast members, so in a series where main characters and even side characters just CAN'T die under any circumstance it was pretty clear Shigaraki wasn't gonna do much, just look at Bakugo's "death", he got his heart destroyed by Shigaraki and then got revived two chapters later.

    I think it was the best arc we've had in my hero academia in the anime for ages, maybe ever, the way they made the show look felt perfect for the arc and set the mood really well. My problem with cour 1 of s6 and all of s5 was that it felt like something big was missing, whereas in the Manga it felt so much more horrific and serious, I think it could have been the use of bright color that made it feel like the horrific scenes were much less emotional. The vigilante arc fixed this problem with the art style and more muted colors.

    My only gripe, like many others here, is that the “Dark Hero” Arc was just incredibly short. It could’ve been longer showing more and more of Deku’s mental state deteriorating and how everyone around him is slowly but progressively changing in terms of worrying about him and wanting to help him. I also would’ve liked him to lean more into becoming Villainous because of how drastically he is changing mentally and physically. Not only did he get a pretty badass Dark Deku design, but they really could’ve leaned more into that where like the overuse of his powers gave him different colored eyes and even have the electricity crackling off him a different color too. And maybe even have some of the Pro-Heroes really look at Deku like he’s a Vigilante considering that’s basically what he was. And maybe have Deku bring a villain he is chasing close to the brink of death being bloodied and battered with other heroes looking to him like he could be a Villain.
    There was so much the Dark Hero Arc could’ve done but didn’t and it sucks considering we are way past that now.

    Unfortunately I agree with you that I think Horikoshi is rushing the ending. But from what I understand MHA has been a much longer anime than he initially intended. But I agree... I feel like we could have had a few more years / seasons of Deku developing and learning his other quirks.
    But I wonder if it's because of how Mangakas are treated and that they have absolutely no time to just relax... they are always forced to pump out manga after manga... mental health be damned... so I wonder if he's just tired and trying to finish it as soon as possible... coz even Star and Stripe felt rushed to me.
    And I agree about the lack of consequences in that more people should have died. Gran Torino and at least one person of Class 1A. Also I hate how quick Mirio got his powers back... all rushed.
    Also I agree with Horikoshi not just overlooking trauma... however I feel like there is time for that after the War. That when this is all finished they talk about the death they have seen and the collective trauma everyone has experienced. But we will see... I hope he doesn't fumble the ball... but saying that I enjoyed season 6... especially compared with season 5.

    I know a lot of people in the comment section say they like this arc and that's fine... but I'm sorry. A "vigilante arc" where said vigilante is only one for about a week before getting friendship speeched for several chapters in a row back to being a hero is kind of lame. I've seen other series do it way better. Spoilers for Tower of God but when Bam became somewhat of a vigilante, it took his team several arcs to get him back, we followed him and how he learned to open up to people again, and uncovered an entire organization and their dynamics with the power system of the tower. I wouldn't even call Deku's little emo dabble an actual vigilante arc. It was a few chapters of him running away from home.
