    EDIT: I want to say it clearly - I specifically avoided speculating on Horikoshis health and the involvement of his editors because while some signs are there, we simply don't know anything yet. You are free to discuss it obviously, but in a video like this, which can easily and quickly spread its information, I didnt want to accidentally propagate false or incomplete assumptions about real people. This is about the observable, structural changes and tendencies of the media product, not about judging and analyzing the people behind it. It is a willful omission on my part.

      I feel like the only way for SOME of theses issues to be fixed is through the anime. I hope that when the anime adapts the later parts of the story, bones is able to change some of the plot. Not by much, but make it better than what we got in the manga. Or even better they can add in some filler episodes to add on to the story and add in new plot points that weren't in the manga.

    The fact that this entire series takes in place in one year of the students school highlights how badly Horikoshi paces the story. By now, Class A should be seniors and it would show that they're finally ready to become heroes. Instead of freshman who just keep getting lucky or sporadically power boosted

      Seconded. The story should be paced like Harry Potter - we see the characters grow physically, mentally, and emotionally with each year, culminating in the final school year being the final arc. Had Hori went with this route, it would utterly avert the need for a timeskip because we see 1A and 1B grow.
      Instead, he wrote himself into a corner by making 1A being the entire center and having arcs resolved very rapidly while not giving us not much time to feel the aftermath.

    I think the largest problem the show and maybe even shonen at large is their inability to go through with serious consequence and that just gets worse as mha continues. Once u start bringing dead characters back it’s the point of no return

    • @anubion42
      @anubion42 Рік тому +121

      That’s what I’m thinking too.
      I always think back to Full metal alchemist whenever I see this happened.
      Nina happened at the very start of that series. (All versions/manga) Same with the failed attempt to revive their mother.
      Both are traumatic events that stick with the characters. When the brothers comment about not being able to save even a little girl. Literally months after it would of happened. You feel the impact that had on them.
      When Al questions his reality, you feel Ed anger as we know what he went through to save Al.
      Hell the title “‘full metal” alchemist’ is literally titled after the title (take a shot when I type title) Ed gets since he lost limbs at the start and got metal prosthetics.
      There much more that happens and continues to impact the plot later one. The rebellion you see in the first few episodes come back towards the end.
      But there aren’t many shows I can think of that do this as well. Avatar the last air bender is the only other one I can think of.
      Both build up to a perfect conclusion imo.

    • @MythicShadow04
      @MythicShadow04 Рік тому +46

      Exactly. I honestly think Bleach was ahead of it’s time, since people actually stayed dead and there was consequences that actually occurred in the series. If C46 actually did something about Kikyo’s death, Tosen never would’ve rebelled. If Yamamoto actually killed Yhwach during the first war, he never would’ve came back. Hell, the Hell arc is a perfect example. The Shinigami has sent people down to Hell repeatedly, and without Aizen and Yhwach, the balance of the universe is now beginning to collapse.

      I think the story and pacing are doing just fine. I think too many people have been complaining about every narrative choice MHA makes or could have made and that no matter what choices they make they are going to get a vocal backlash for it. Tempering my expectations for the story with that knowledge has let me enjoy the story for what and why it is.

    A problem i always had with Mha is how fast deku got a handle with ofa and his classmates weren't even growing at the same pace as him. The kids who've had their quirks their entire lives suck at using their quirks more than the guy who's had his for only a few months

    • @machspeed20

      Because deku is a boring, bland, Gary Sue character that is made to be a savior with zero flaws. This is why people end up liking characters like bakugo and todoroki more because they have actual flaws to work on and aren't inherently a walking chunk of morally righteous plot armor that will suddenly drop all of the supposed drawbacks of his abilities for the sake of plot (remember how deku used to get injured from using his attacks and he was at risk of losing arms, yeah, that happened).

Like the quirkless still exist but the whole shtick is just brushed under the rug. I hated it cuz it enforces the fact that the quirkless really can't be anything without a power message that was drilled to Deku but then later the show does a 180 when it showed that support items could out right beat quirks during the tournament arc. There's also the fact that most in Class-A students are pretty much under-leveled compared to Deku cuz if they wanted to make him an underdog guy who needs to catch up to his peers with his given power, they should've made his classmates be prodigies who leaves him in the dust, cuz not even a few chapters later he already dogpiles lot of them despite just receiving his quirk that it didn't even look like a challenge for him.

    There's something sad about the rushed ending, Dabi. His greatest pain was that the world did not care about his suffering and endeavour. And in the end, despite the excellent execution of his revelation, it failed because in addition to endeavour and his family, nobody cares. The audience doesn't care too much about it because they need endeavour, Deku and Shoto's friend are too busy to care. In the end, Dabi's desire to hold ENDEAVOR accountable for his actions (other than self-imposed guilt, the lowest of punishments honestly) mattered to no one.

      Exactly. As a huge fan of Dabi and Endeavor, this bothers me greatly. I don't necessarily mind the idea that something may have always been wrong with Toya and that he's both a victim and an asshole who is fine with the entire world burning because of his issues. Especially because a lot of media excuses victims far too easily for their own destructive behavior. But I also feel that him being an asshole is becoming the main argument. Toya's grievances of Enji are still legit. Even if the way he chooses to deal with it makes him a bigger monster than his father.
      At least so far, we don't see too much fallout for Enji, except a confrontation by the press and him wearing a disguise because he's afraid of being seen by the public. What's more, the way Dabi is now framed as a problem that Shoto is taking care of rids the story of all the obvious parallels between Enji and Toya. As much as Toya hates his father, he's also the child that takes after him most: someone who wants to fulfill his goals, whatever the cost. All further interactions should be between Endeavor and Dabi: Shoto is just utterly incidental in all of it. It'd be extremely interesting to see a scenario where Toya has the horrifying realization that while he may have ruined his father's life (perhaps deservedly so), the lengths he went to caused him to ruin his own as well and surprise, he can't actually just die and check out of the consequences on his own terms. But nope, gotta finish this story fast now! Who cares about one of the most compelling side stories anymore?

    • @edgeofduality7920
      @edgeofduality7920 2 роки тому +106

      To be honest when Dabi's backstory was revealed it kinda felt like the character was thrown under the bus because of Endeavor's redemption arc. Before that Dabi seemed a lot more sympathetic because he was seen as a sad abused child who was never good enough for his father or whatever. But now he's apparently just a psychopath instead and Endeavor did nothing wrong. Not that the author doesn't have the right to write his characters in any way he wants, but it kinda felt more like he was scared that showing Endeavor in a bad light would ruin any sympathy the readers had for him and his redemption arc.
      I don't necessarily mind the redemption itself, but I also don't really understand why it had to be Endeavor. There are so many actually interesting characters that could've had far more compelling redemption arcs than he did. Not to mention that lots of readers actually like those characters, unlike Endeavor who practically everyone hated until his redemption arc.

Endeavor wanting to keep Dabi from burning himself makes him less of a hate sink and more complex. He's not pure evil, but he himself admitted that he can only show his kids "the world of heroes." He was a terrible father, and Dabi became unstable because Endeavor was pumping out kids in an obvious attempt to replace him with a more perfect child. Imagine how damaging that would be to a young Dabi who had his father's admiration yanked away.

    There was a solution to the All For One problem that was so obvious that it immediately raised red flags to me when the story didn't do it at Tartaros: Shigaraki killing All For One.
    Were this to happen, it certainly wouldn't solve every problem, but it would provide a semi-coherent compromise between maintaining the element of All For One not wanting to give up his place in the world and letting Shiggy maintain his agency. Had this happened, several important things would have been different:
    1. All For One's relationship with Shiggy would have been strategically made parallel to All Might and Deku's. While All Might accepted that his time was past and worked to let Deku take on the mantle, All For One held on past his prime for so long that it killed him. Shiggy exacts his agency and kills his master, completing his journey to becoming the series big bad.
    2. Saving Tenko is neither predicated on beating up All For One nor the only possible end. It's suddenly up in the air whether that could happen at all, and if Deku does decide to do it, it becomes a lot more complex of a problem to solve. It would have to involve confronting the inherent issues with the hero system and society at large now that the BBEG is not around to be the scapegoat anymore.
    3. The League's character traits continue to be front and center. Spinner, Dabi, and Toga have more or less been sidelined since All For One reentered the story, so giving them real character motivations for the last two arcs would have been a lot easier. Not only that, but Shigaraki would have had to deal with the fallout of each of them having different goals and the consequences of letting his companions do whatever they want.
    4. As the UA traitor, Aoyama's position becomes a lot more complicated. All For One is no longer hanging over him, so now the only thing keeping him from telling his secret is his own conscience. This would make his role in the story more personal and satisfying.
    This act wouldn't solve the problems with pacing and Deku's characterization, but it would make the stakes of the final war a lot more interesting, to the point where I was shocked when it didn't happen and genuinely believed it still would until recently.

    I think I can safely add this series to my mental list of "The Fanfiction will outlive the actual story."
    And honestly? I'm not even mad. The world of My Hero Academia is so easy to access from a ground level that making fan OC creations became even easier than it usually is for these sorts of stories. The setting is inherently interesting from the word GO. A world that's so damn obsessed with superheroes that it's FULLY willing to paper over the cracks in the pavement that people can slip through can create any number of fan-driven scenarios. Who would we be if we were in this story? Would we love superheroes like the general populace or would the broken nature of turning good deeds into a business model and popularity contest disgust us?
    The characters with their distinct and strong personalities ARE THERE. The setting with themes that make us stop and think IS THERE. The sheer open-ended nature of quirks basically being ANYTHING we can imagine IS THERE.
    But it began to crumble under the weight of making this world make sense in a narrative that satisfies over time. The idea you touched on with passing the torch being dropped in order to make the Evil Business Potato Man be the main antagonist again "because reasons" crystalizes this issue in my mind. My Hero Academia can't do everything it wants to do because it never had the space needed to BREATHE. Interesting plot points being dropped left and right in order to accelerate the main cast to something resembling an ending. Lingering stories that could invest us if we learned more? Best case scenario is just shoving them into Vigilantes and hoping people stop complaining to us.
    I'm going to bring up the big one. One Piece. Yes, it's going on and on AND ON and is only RECENTLY setting up the grand finale for a story that's run since the damn 90's but it had something critical. The time needed to FULLY flesh out characters. Is it perfect? Of course not. A story running that long will have lots of loose plot devices and arcs that are either hastily tied together or set aside. But the sheer LENGTH of the story means that even the wackiest and loosest written characters were given time to show why they became the people they were. How time would change them and let them grow as people in a way that makes sense. My Hero Academia seems to be SCREAMING out for more time to develop what it has already but isn't being listened to.
    The world of One Piece is wide and varied with a LOT of different elements to explore.
    The world of My Hero Academia is wide and varied with a LOT of different elements to explore.
    One was given the time in the oven needed to have even the most insane elements make sense over time. Or at the very least be coherent.
    One was not given that same luxury.

I wanted them searching for him and breaking down his stubborn self-sacrificial nature to be more time consuming and cover multiple encounters. Like Oceanz said, Deku never actually learns how wrong his actions were beyond simply being a lone wolf. At the end of the day what he was doing was working, and he never actually failed. I think the turn would've been much better if his nature actually ended up causing someone to be hurt or even killed. Sometimes I wonder what people thought about Yu Yu Hakusho around the time it ended, because, to me, it almost mirrors what is happening with boku no hero today. We can only hope that if Horikoshi is going to follow Togashi's deed (ending a series because you are tired of it and/or uninterested in working non-stop for decades on a single project) that his "HunterXHunter" will come in the future.

But yeah this hastiness is gonna make the finish line of MHA have some bumps that's for sure.
      It is worth noting though that the Three Demin Kings arc of YYH was more expanded on in the anime incarnation, and even came up with a more tasteful use of that final Yusuke fight that doesn't feel so abrupt. the concept is solid, but not what i really wanted when i heard "one of the few not super powered people becomes the number one in the world" theres a lot of anime that portrays their character as magicless or ability-less, then it's discovered that they just have the anti of whatever magic that world has, but straight up going "no magic, get bent, figure it out" is just much rarer i think

    It's an absolute travesty that Shigaraki has been sidelined for Potato Man - honestly, the idea of having both the hero AND main villain of a series suck at the beginning and then subsequently grow and learn along the way is genius. It was amazing to see Shigaraki go from a manchild to someone more competent as he had to take on more responsibility as well as face other villains.
    It's really a shame how things are rushed, even the arc with Re-destro felt rushed and I think it would have been great to see more arcs where Shigaraki could develop and the author could explore how this character handles being a villain. All for one should not have returned to take over IMO, instead Shigaraki should have been kept as the main villain, a far more interesting character that has personal connections to many characters as was said in the video.
    How about an arc showing Shigaraki trying to do something with the quirk product he won from Overhaul, where he needs to establish himself as a boss in the criminal underworld while competing with other villains who want to snuff him out. Would be a great way to not only learn more about the other villains that have emerged and operate in the shadows, but also how Shigaraki and his team grow more influental in the world. This could then lead to another arc where the consequences of his actions with quirk product affect Deku and the other heroes/the world at large.

Second of all, Shigaraki never wanted to destroy society to free everyone from opression. Systemic change was never the reason for his desire to wreck it all. I think he’s being handled just fine? He’s being deprived of everything by AFO - his agency, identity, autonomy, even his facial features now began to disappear. AFO takes away his individuality in every way imaginable and replaces with his own. And this _is_ where it’s supposed to go. Shigaraki's falling deeper into the rabbit hole, but this is just a prelude before Izuku comes and saves the day. The deeper he falls and the longer he stews in misery, the more satisfying Izuku helping him will be (since this is where the story points at, so far).

If BNHA continued through from Class 1-A’s first year to their third year, it’d give Midoriya having more quirks time to breathe. But because the pacing is all just in Midoriya’s first year, it feels so fucking crazy. I honestly thought with how kinda slow BNHA told its pacing, that it would’ve been like Harry Potter style year system going on. Like we would’ve gotten to see Class 1-A and Midoriya really grow as the years progressed. Even though we’re “near the end” of BNHA, in hindsight it honestly still feels like we still haven’t explored the world of BNHA to the fullest. There’s still so much untapped potential in exploring superhuman society, characters, and more.

Allmight was considered a prodigy and even he took some time to master basic ofa...kids in 1-a took a year to master their individual quirk to the level that they have and pros did it way more than that...but now you have deku who within the course of a few months have mastered like 6 different quirks better than freaking pros wo have dedicated there lives to master one quirk...keep in mind deku is not supposed to be a combat prodigy....if anything in terms of natural talent it was implied that deku is not really talented at all.

    I was so excited for the potential history that these two characters had. I was- and still am- adamant on the headcanon that Touya was a part of the secret hero program by the HPSC.
    Dabi saying ‘I never believed anything from the start’ in response to Hawks being a double agent would of had SO MUCH more weight if he had a connection to the HPSC and Keigo during childhood.
    (Also explaining why he knew his real name, and why Hawks was so shocked- perhaps Touya could have been the only one he trusted with his real name, and was shocked to see his childhood-friend-turned-villain?)
    Perhaps the experience of being groomed into a ‘perfect hero’ could have added to his societal views? Perhaps Touya’s gruelling training and insight into the toxic practices of the HPSC could of served as foreshadowing for Lady Nagant? Maybe this would have been a better backstory for Dabi knowing his true name, rather than him just using nameless goons for information?

    Deku's power development also peaked way too fast.
    Watching Deku slowly progressing through the percentages of one for all was a long but to be-satisfying journey. We all hoped to see him reach 100% with no repercussion, and that painted to be a part of the story that would take inside-years to master, and when he would finally get there, it would seem earned, both to Deku and to us by sticking all the way from 5 to 8 to 20 to 35.
    During the first war when it was mentioned that Deku could use 35% and 45% at impact, it was a sign that the heroes wouldn't win the war but that also meant that we would've been in a while new ride with Deku until he gets to 100%, and little by little, the story of One for all would be fully revealed to Deku, giving him more mentality for battling.
    But when fighting Lady Nagant, fa Jin came in and threw that out the window. It's a cool fight, sure, but fa Jin making Deku on par with all might already with faux 100% makes the journey underwhelming.
    We spent hundreds of chapters watching Deku increase his percentages and got excited when he did because it meant something special for him and for us.
    Having that suddenly replaced with something that has "faux" in the name is disappointing.
    It's also frustrating that, fajin could've worked as a bonus for Deku, but that's the thing, a bonus, something for when after he's reached 100%
    It's not an abismal problem, but it was something that made the series what it was.

    • @MasterMemo
      @MasterMemo Рік тому +4

      Yeah I think speed is the problem. Of course Deku flexible the OFA muscle at higher numbers would strengthen that muscle. 5 to 45 makes sense given the events that pass, but not the time frame.

    • @KenanTheFab
      @KenanTheFab Рік тому +3

      Kind of disagree? Fa Jin allowing Deku to do a fake 100% is pretty on point and in line with the rest of Deku's moves. Before he could control the % he would instead sacrifice fingers and limbs for "one time" (until healed, like how a gun needs to be reloaded) powerful shots- and when he did control his % he gradually stretched the muscle of OFA and proceeded to develop techniques based around the strengths and weaknesses such as using a lower % for attacks but increasing it far more just before impact-
      Fa Jin, while suffers from the same issue as all the past OFA users's quirks do (introduced too quick, not enough practise shown, etc), is still very much in line with the story and Deku's mindset. He didn't have full control over it and instead applied it in an intelligent way (he basically had two boosts, one for each leg. One to leap at Nagant and another to blast forwards while using the whips to change his trajectory) and just like his early application of OFA it was limited (instead of fingers however he was limited to his legs and would need to remain static for a prolonged amount of time to recharge.)

There would be in-fighting among heroes knowing they were considered for removal, would invite more doubt in the population, and personally shock Midoriya. Speaking of, Deku has broken his arms at this point, dealing permanent damage, while Shigiraki continues to make his escape, but not before rubbing in the inevitable collapse of hero society by telling him "Only All Might could have stopped this." Deku will be left broken both physically, and spiritually.
    The Villain Hunt Arc will begin with Shigiraki breaking free of AFO, decaying him, and forms a new team with the prisoners, telling the ones that refuse to join him to stir up trouble, because there's no one to stop them. On the heroes' sides, One For All becomes public knowledge, and both heroes and villains are searching for Midoriya and his loved ones to forcefully inherit the quirk for their own purposes, and the lad no longer feels worthy and thus is willing to give it up. Class-1A refuses to let him give up, preparing Eri for training to reverse the damage, but must in the meantime keep watch for assailants, all while having softer moments with him so as not to surrender his benevolent ambition. Villain Hunt would be a lot heavier under these circumstances. But this is mostly coming in retrospect, so it's easier to think up.

    I remember what I liked about MHA was how, since it's superhero themed, it felt like the world was built to be like a marvel style connected universe. Like somewhere in another timeline all of these characters have thier own comic series and such and I used the strengths of that medium. I used to pitch it to people as "Spiderman goes to the Xavier academy where his teacher is superman". Characters like All might were like golden age 1940s heroes in a simplistic good vs evil world but they had to grapple with leaving a far more complex bronze age like world to the next generation who have more realistic issues, explored in a manga format and it was so unique and interesting.
    But my issues cropped up quickly. I assumed class 1A would do the rotation you were describing in this as well, X-Men and other team comics did that sort of thing all the time. Yeah Deku was central but class 1A seemed to be built up as the main force reacting to the wider universe. Like Gentle and the Overhaul arc felt like single contained issues about the class 1A comic that were occasionally interrupted by stuff like stain which felt like a tie in to an event comic like how American comics do it. But as we went on like 4-5 characters hogged more and more of the spotlight and some characters couldn't even be given half a chapter for any fleshing out at all (I can't name you a single thing about sugar rush). More and more pro heroes came along, an entire second class of fodder, all this extra bullshit taking away from what shoulda been the main focus. However the early ones where at least in service of class 1As development. So I had hope they were just taking their time.
    But after the war arc it suddenly became....just an event comic. And if you've ever read one you'll know at best you get a central being and a villain as focus and everyone else is there to show its a big event, character moments just sorta happen and you gotta read a tie in to get more focus. But there is no tie in, Jirous fight with all for one woulda had her decision explained in "Earphone Jack No.37" but there's no such thing. Characters like Sero, The rock face one, tail guy and all of that other narratively worthless class hold the same relevance as bit part supporting characters in someone else book that get brutally killed in the 90s when everyone wanted to be edgy. With a No.1 issue that will never come now. By now MHA is so like a bad event comic that that i wouldn't be surprised if they pull a Naruto and have All for one get sniped by a previously unknown villain from space so they can squeeze in a Thanos pastiche
    Mha originally succeeded because it innovated on the superhero genre. It failed because it just started doing the superhero genre.

      I think this issue is greatly showcased in how the metamorphs (animal people) riots led by spinner is handled, shoji all of a sudden has a terrible backstory of prejudice and he really wants to be the one to deal with this issue like its so rushed with how the riot stops suddenly because shoji said no this will make it worse. It feels like there is a missing part of the story like you mentioned with Jiro it feels like I missed reading out a comic or story that is key to shojis character. Same with Spinners goal of breaking free from this prejudice but its not mentioned at all in the story he was a stain fan who joined the league of villains, the only mention of this at all is spinner once asks I believe shoji during the training camp attack something like, "dont you hate your parents for making you look like such a freak?" and then its never mentioned again until the final arc.

    The problem with having All For One as the main villain at this point in the story is his lack of thematical presence now. Shigaraki has completely dominated that sphere and for good reason. After All For One's defeat, we were further drawn into the systemic problems of the character's society. We were drawn into it by the story and how Shigaraki was so interwoven with these issues. With this added layer of complexity, All For One just falls flat. Things are not as simple as they were when he first showed his hand, and, unfortunately, All For One is not as invested or tethered to society the way Shigaraki is. This was touched on in several interviews with him wanting to end BNHA, because he’s been getting pressured to. Pressure from fans, critics, likely from his publishers and editors too.

    You couldn't have said it better!
    The selling point for this anime in 2016 was the premise that although they live in a super powered society, there were people striving to become their best selves(Deku). The whole point of this was to show the struggles of the human heart in situations that normal humans don't go through. What is it like being super powerful and disconnected of your human emotions? What is it like being powerful and feeling empty/inferior?
    I can't stress this enough: audiences are not interested in a super powerful being with no internal struggle. For example: One punch man (season 1 at least). He completely obliterates his enemies, but at what cost? HIs hair? His emotions? The thrills of battle? When Deku gets his new powers, it feels like he has new found responsabilities. Learning them without destroying his body, as it had been established previously. At one point he is shattering his bones and in the next: HAHA I CAN MOVE AT 100% 'CAUSE I'M EMO NOW. What???? It was just so he could be leveled up? that's annoyind as heeeell.
    Deku no longer cares if he hurts his mother or not by destroying himself. (and then he can fight without repercussions). HIs relationship with all might is forgotten, he doesn't need to learn nothing more. His friends are side characters that don't matter shit in the protagonists life. No fight has consequences, not even Eraser Heads sacrifice (his leg) means enything, cause it is all SKIPPED so we can see omnipotent figures fighting.
    I dropped the manga when they threw in a super powerful american hero who DIED FOR NOTHING.

  • @Doomzdeh
    @Doomzdeh 2 роки тому +81

    MHA’s problem is that it is rushing the War Arc consistently, with characters changing their minds on a dime (like Deku and his “lone wolf” idiocy), constant battles that fail to be impactful because they’re lined up one after the other with no proper intermissions of development or interactions between, and no given reasons as to why first year high school students are the ones making the biggest battles against the League of Villains.
    AFO long overstaying his welcome and becoming like a vestige is also a serious swing-and-a-miss. OFA having vestiges makes sense because it is a stockpiling quirk. All For One, on the other hand, was simply (somehow copied, which is also never explained) into Shigaraki and somehow this allows AFO to hijack Shigaraki’s body? It makes no sense, really, and it kinda destroys the impact of Shigaraki’s character development over the course of the series. All of the moments of his growth and his direct parallels with Deku are now mulch since AFO is once again returning for a tired and exhausting story of how he’s just evil because he likes it and how he’s totally gonna get OFA this time. All of this, of course, with no emotional development or character connections to AFO as a character, or even a more involved backstory for him.
    Legitimately the only way I can see this decision making sense is if AFO really IS Deku’s dad. And it would kinda be a sham revelation if they pulled that card so late in the game, too.
    This series became the new Naruto Shippuden wayyyy too quick.

    • @Doomzdeh
      @Doomzdeh 2 роки тому +5

      @@gaeron1305 How was Lone Deku a good plot? It just shows how much Deku hasn’t grow since the beginning, always recklessly running into problems without any thought and arrogantly (albeit unintentionally) thinking that he alone can solve the world’s problems and that such things are too dangerous for his classmates.
      By now, Deku should know that his classmates are formidable and are growing just like he is. He should know that abandoning them would mean nothing, because AFO could’ve just targeted them anyway because Deku would be too heroic to not run to save them immediately.
      Also, how would going it alone against a city and country full of escaped and empowered villains make Deku or anyone else any safer? He was legit endangering OFA by doing so, as he could’ve easily been killed when he was wandering the streets alone and without any backup.
      Narratively, it makes no sense. It showed no growth in Deku’s character, it ended far too quickly and without much lasting effects to have any impact on the story, and Deku didn’t even lose anything from it (which might have justified it for teaching him a lesson).
      Overall, it was a lazy attempt to satisfy those who love those Vigilante Deku fanfictions online. And, in a story where most of the other characters are either given zero individual or personal storylines and very little depth at all, it gave Deku’s classmates and teachers literally nothing to do in the story as he ran around playing hero. And it showed Deku’s greatest flaw in an unrestrained and obnoxious way: his selfishly selfless belief that he should protect everyone alone and that he needs to protect even his fellow heroes.
      That whole arc, after the series having already shown how All Might made those mistakes and indirectly caused all of this by doing so, only showcased Horikoshi’s lack of creativity and his lack of continuity. And it succeeded in showing just how little Deku’s mistakes and trials throughout the series have actually helped him to grow.

    What an eye-opening video. Watching Shonen N' Chill week to week ever since the villain hunt, I see how yours, mine, and the community opinion as a whole was and is shaped by the reaction to individual chapters. How short run issues pile up in the long run, while hype moments fade and are forgotten. That's why the majority of the audience who reads the story just for the hype still loves it BECAUSE of the hype, which Hori now specifically made his target. This video made me more critical and worried for the future. To think that I'll soon be finishing MHA with "ugh, finally" rather than this the feeling that the journey has reached its destination, it just makes me sad.

    this was an incredible video. As a longtime fan of MHA, I agreed fullheartedly with so many of your points. I was there, live, when Dabi's Dance came out, and I also remember vividly how the manga lost all that adrenaline and hype right after. I wish they lingered more on the recovery arc/saving deku. MHA, at its core, is also partially a slice of life, and ever since deku went vigilante that element has been missing more than ever. The whole class have been so separated/isolated, and that just doesn't work for the story. They should've had more time to comfort each other and talk things out.
    Besides that, there are also a lot of ideas that got abandoned when Deku just magically started gaining quirks. Obviously, you mentioned that he lost all possible consequences for overworking/going too far. But, I also think that at the start the story was very much about learning to rely on people. All Might stepping down after kamino hit hard because he was the one and only symbol of peace. I really thought the manga would go for the "one for all" theme and show the strength in unity, have all the students work together to make up for deku's flaws, but no - he just?? copies their moves?? with his new quirks?? it downplays his classmates so disgustingly and urgh it's horrible
    the traitor arc, too, I have no idea what happened with that? there were some really good theories out there about the potential traitor, but then in the story it just comes up once and is immediately??? idk???
    Also, when Katsuki dies, everyone predicts right away that he wouldn't really die, but I actually legit thought his fake death would at least have more impact. Even though he was dead for a long time irl, in the story it's like. not even a day. I though, okay, they won't have time for midnight's funeral, but maybe they'd include a lot of grieving/mourning scenes for katsuki, give some real weight to the war and the stakes at hand, show that they have no choice but to grow up - but nah
    (wrote this like midway thru the video so i have no idea if they'e brought up later on lol).
    gosh, there are so many messy things about this series. I love it, still, but mostly because it's fun to think about rather than read now lol. This video obviously inspired a lot of thoughts in me so I just wanted to say that it was really well made and fun to watch. For the hour you gave me I actually felt like a proper MHA fan again talking about the manga instead of just watching everyone's disappointed and disinterested reactions. thank you so much for making this video

    I don't know if it's just me (and you guys can tell me in the replies), but I think there is one more aspect that broke MHA that a lot of people seem to overlook.
    There are many themes in MHA that you have pointed out, Oceaniz: deterioration of altruism, passing the torch, crushing societal expectations, etc. But there was one more overall theme for the story that, in my opinion, set MHA apart from upcoming shounen series today.
    Heroes and villains.
    In the world of MHA, there were only villains (those that used their quirks for their own desires, regardless of whether it hurt others) and heroes (those that used their quirks to contribute to the greater good, and save others). Victims that grew up to harm others out of spite (*cough* Shigaraki *cough cough*) were treated like villains as they should. Even characters like Stain, who had a point about modern professional heroes being fake, are still treated like villains because of their destruction. Plus, in a world full of fake heroes, there were still people who genuinely wanted to be altruistic, even to their self-destruction like Deku.
    A lot of shounen these days have become morally gray, like JJK and Chainsaw Man, and while there is nothing inherently wrong with writing morally gray stories, they made me appreciate shounen like MHA that followed the classic heroes vs. villains theme. And I'm not saying that MHA is completely black and white; it's not. It's just that its moral-greyness wasn't from having no true heroes or villains, but from those that claimed to be heroes not actually being heroic, and from villains who saw themselves as the real heroes, righting "the wrongs of society". But what always remained the same was that there were mainly two sides: good and evil. And no matter your background, you could choose to stray away from the light or become it. That was the difference between Deku and Shigaraki, Todoroki and Dabi, etc.
    And then the war arc happened. And suddenly everyone in MHA has "always been morally gray". Shigaraki can no longer be truly blamed for his actions because he's possessed by All-for-One. The League of Villains aren't actually villains; they're "victims of society and nothing more". Every hero in the series is being judged more than the villains. It's forced moral-grayness at this point and it's just feels disappointing to me.

    Idk if anyone else hated the jump to this post apocalyptic society after the war but it felt so forced to me. It seemed like the heroes won, they captured a small army of villains including dozens of high end nomus, the guy creating nomus, gigamachina, killed twice, and left the league with like 4 members. Yet heroes are quitting en mass, everyone suddenly hates heroes when appreciation for them should be higher since citizens need protection, and there's no significant government force being sent in to help the situation. I get some heroes leaving but its ridiculous so many just quit when the series hadn't built up such a sentiment in any of the heroes we met.

      I tried to like it, but the thing is the events of the war weren't enough to cause a "civil war" type arc. I would love to see that, but not only the heroes won, there were no civilian deaths. I would improve by making the fight take place in a major city, or even musufatu itself. If you want the public of your universe to hate heroes, than make situation that will lead to that

      @@psmgames5861 tbh they shouldn't have let the heroes win so cleanly. What should've happened was the heroes knew about the invasion but waited too long to act on the info. Maybe have that leak out to the public. Have the war be messy with lots of casualties, heroes dying and heroes killing other villains out of fear, heroes running/hiding while others choose to fight. Maybe even have a couple civilians/vigilanties take down major villains further diminishing trust in heroes.
      The result of the war could still be the same, twice getting killed, gigamachina and other league members getting captured, etc. but give us a reason to believe the heroes would quit and general public opinion of them to diminish.

      It was some time since i watched MHA but didn't Garaki (the guy creating nomus) get bailed out of jail? also i am pretty sure machia and Shiggy destroyed a lot of things during the war arc, like Shiggy's awakening and Machia running through a city to get to Shigaraki. Also almost forgot but exposing the current number one hero as child abuser defenitly done a hit + that child being one of the most prominent villains and Hawks killing a villain, while fellow heroes might be like "I guess there was just no choice" or smth like that, public would defenitly not like that their number 2 hero is a killer. And the last thing, it's that there wasn't that trust in the heroes after All might's retirement (Like All might was said to be unmatched and even he lost, how would the heroes that are left fair against those that could beat all might).

    MHA was a real iccuras moment. it just needed more time to develop everything, characters, themes, arcs, plot all of it. the worst of it all is that it really felt like it was all going somewhere but now it's official it's going to end this year.
    But man a lot of MAH is still so good. it's gonna turn into a naruto now. It's legacy being defined by how it ended, not how it got there.

    56:44 It makes even less sense, now that we know the Doctor did in fact know about AFO's plan all along, seeing as how he had "backups" in case Shigaraki failed!
    You pretty much included everything about why this makes no sense, but I'd like to add one more point with the Doctor. So, he obviously knew that AFO planned to take over Shigaraki's body....So then why was he giving Shigaraki the option to not go through with the procedure??? He said he'd give Tomura power ONLY if Shigaraki wanted it! In fact, he even questioned WHY he wanted it moments before the procedure began! Why would he not only give Shigaraki the option to deny the opportunity, but also question the decision as well???
    It makes no sense to me!

    As someone who's only watched the anime and read some comments before watching the video, I don't understand why AFO is now the main villain. I thought the direction the series was heading (and the whole point of it) was to set up a big final fight between Shigaraki and Deku. Their parallels are so (intentionally) similar, both of them having the best mentors with rival quirks, unlocking numerous abilities and learning to use them, having their own teams, and being at odds... It doesn't make sense to re-introduce AFO as the "main" villain when, so far, the story has led audiences to believe the torches of both AFO and OFA were being passed down and leading to a new fight.

    The thing I took away from Jirou vs All for One is that it plays into Jirou's story during the cultural festival about how she can help people through her music similarly to how heroes do. So, her heartbeat resonated within the vestiges of All for One in order to get them to rise up against him. Also about how while she is just a side character, she can still fight just as hard as others which allows the vestiges to have the courage to rebel as well. A.F.O even makes a point to say she isn't strong enough to hurt him at all, it's her will that's causing the quirks to fight back,

    I would've loved to see Deku become a self sacrificing vigilante who spirals because of all the trauma he has experienced, see Endeavor and Hawks punished for their actions, Dabi steadily breaking down hero society like he suggested in stuble ways, Shigaraki continue to parallel Deku and becoming the big bad like how Deku is the big hero, All Might becoming a better mentor and person realizing that constant positive feelings and giving isn't good, let the people who have experienced trauma (like everyone) either get therapy or spiral and breakdown. Not even mentioning the character problems that existed beforehand: such as every female student in UA looking all too similar to each other, all of those shirtless scenes with the boys, lack of three dimensional characters, etc.
    I'm very sad to see such an interesting concept fall apart.

I don’t like or want to give into the decline BNHA has had despite agreeing with admittedly a lot of the video’s points above, but I still will like BNHA for what it did introduce. I still consider it overall, a good series even with its flawed parts. Because hey; most media aren’t perfect.

    40:50 for this specifically, in the fight against Star and Stripe it switches between AFO and Tomura speaking several times. IIRC at the start of the new fight where the Hero's teleport Tomura's body away, it also momentarily switches between AFO and Tomura but it is mostly AFO in control. These things are not conveyed clearly in English, unfortunately.

      Huh, neat. Other than that the only thing that really stuck out to me about their fusion was after his defeat, how AFO pointed out that his personal dislike of All Might mixed with Shigaraki's overall intense hatred as he uh, continuously seethed on the floor. Still find it neat, but it's kinda weird that at this point it's hard to get a total grasp on the main villain since stitching two characters together ironically makes you understand the end result less.
      Wait now that I'm thinking about it, did he even point that out? Hmm, I remember him talking about how much he hates All Might at least, but, well, I guess that's there either way?
