I am a career data analyst and architect. Never spent any time learning network stuff. I am currently setting up some VMs in Azure and want to know something about the Vnets that go with them. This series is great. I won't be an expert when I get to the end of the series, but will know a lot more than I do right now. Great quality.

If you write 60 bytes in a UDP packet, then all the bytes are sent (wrapped in proper headers). If you write 60 bytes in a TCP packet, then you might get one or multiple packets, incuding some with 0 bytes data (with wrappers), or it might wait until, about 2/1000'ths of a second has passed before sending the packet. So, when you read the TCP packets at the other end, you have to know when to keep reading. A simple solution, is to add your own header, into your tcp ip packet sent. and then you can tell where one ends, and one begins. Another solution, is to use two UDP lines, where each side, have a client and a server.
UDP good for situations where if the data was resent, it would already be useless, which is why it is good for realtime. If a part of a voice call is resent and received 2 seconds later, it is already useless.

Why does udp require checksum if it doesn't care whether the data was received or not?
Great question. The checksum is for the receiving computer to check for errors in the packet.
