26 Weeks Or Less - Blockbusters (1987)

- It's not often we take a look at a Goodson-Todman show for 26 Weeks Or Less, but now is the time. After Trivia Trap ended its run in 1985, every single Goodson show up until his death was a revival. All of them got 9 months or more....except one. We take a look at Blockbusters from 1987. Enjoy!

The 1987 revival of Blockbusters with the late Bill Rafferty ran on NBC from January 5 through May 1, 1987, only to be replaced by Classic Concentration with the late Alex Trebek, which premiered 3 days later on May 4, 1987.
You’re right, but the premiere of Classic Concentration on 5/4 was preemptive for most of the country due to a NBC News Special Report
I've got an interesting idea for a Tiermaker: various game show production companies. Everyone from G/T, Merv Griffin/Sony, Barry & Enright, Hatos/Hall, Heatter-Quigley, Carruthers, Bob Stewart Productions, Jay Wolpert productions, Al Howard, Stone Stanley, Viacom Productions, Reg Grundy, Scott Sternberg, Buena Vista Television, and a few others.
I remember watching this version of BLOCKBUSTERS on GSN when I was in college. One hilarious moment was when one contestant buzzed in, gave a wrong answer, caught herself and dropped the s-bomb under her breath, to which Bill replied, "I believe you meant to say, 'Aw, shucks!'" That being said, I'd like to see a 26 Weeks Or Less episode about PLAY THE PERCENTAGES, Barry & Enright's first game show of the 1980's.
Oooh yeah, PTP in its short life had a wild ride.
I'm shocked now to think Jack fought the urge to somehow save the show by adding celebrities to it too
@@JMFabiano Good news, he didn’t do it. Bad news, he turn it into an 1-on-1 format. It was awful when he did that. It could had gave the nighttime Feud a run for its money
87 Blockbusters has one of my favorite sound effects from any game show. When you lose the Gold Run, it sounds like you lost on Castlevania but even more sinister. I still hum it to this day along with the more familiar Price Is Right losing horns.
This takes its place in the trinity of great game show finale moments with Hit Man ("Forget it!") and Scrabble ("Look what happened to Wheel!" and "Tammy Faye Bakker has a pair of big ones"). Also, Bill Rafferty looks like Pat Finn's older brother.
I smell a ranking....
GAME SHOW FINALES.
@@JMFabiano Survey Says…. You WIIINNNNNNN!!!!
@Eminem200183 all that's left is for Cyndi to make it so!
3 of the millennium game shows qualify as 26 Weeks or Less. So maybe you could do a trilogy of sorts with _It's Your Chance of a Lifetime,_ _Winning Lines,_ & _Paranoia._
I’m down for that. It’s Your Chance and Paranoia could had gotten good runs
@@Eminem200183 _Paranoia_ was the first game show I saw Peter Tomarken on.
I didn't have GSN during the _Prime Games_ era & I didn't discover _Press Your Luck_ until 2001. So _Paranoia_ (Along with most of the other Millennium era game shows) is very sentimental to me during my childhood. I always loved that set & 9 year old me was amazed by it. I never knew it was all actually a greenscreen until an _Entertainment Tonight_ report on Peter's tragic passing.
@@Ultimate23Dragon I watched PYL when it was re-run on the old USA Network and it was one of the best game shows I ever watched. Peter was also host of Wipeout(not the water show), but I really didn’t know he was part of GSN early days cause I didn’t get GSN until ‘96-‘97. I remember watching ET when they announced his death and it broke my heart
I always thought Bill Rafferty should have landed something somewhere after this. His three shows (Every Second Counts, Card Sharks and Blockbusters 87) were all cut short but you couldn't really blame him for it...
The only superior thing about the 87 version of Blockbusters, in my opinion, is the theme music. I love it.
I'm not sure why Buzzr isn't showing the Rafferty version. In their nine years of existence, they have yet to show an episode of his version.
Not the popular version.
It turned out that's why no Chuck Henry Now You See It on GSN too.
Still the most insane way of canceling the show by plugging its successor. I still also believe that this Blockbusters tried to cash in on Jeopardy’s rise by using singleton players, could be wrong….
Actually you might wanna make that 2 Goodson post-1985 revivals that lasted less than 8 months. Now You See It with Chuck Henry (April 1989 thru July 1989 when it got replaced by the CBS Daytime run of Wheel of Fortune) and Blockbusters ‘87 (January 1987 thru May 1987).
Would love to see you review Blackout as a part of this series.
Seeing this video about Blockbusters 1987 made me think that Bill Rafferty (RIP) was being a little sarcastic when he asked the viewers to call collect to try out to become contestants on Classic Concentration. Bill, IMO, may have been a little miffed that the syndicated Card Sharks that he also hosted was also cancelled and he unintentionally took it out on Mark Goodson (RIP).
40th anniversary of the Michael Larson episode is airing soon...also very excited for The 1% Club
Speaking of, the 40th anniversary of the taping of that Infamous episode is Today.
I remember watching the 1987 version of Blockbusters, and to be honest, I like the 1987 version graphic wise because the hexagons actually flew into place on the board
Talking about the sloppy production, there's one moment that always stands out to me: They asked "What B is the alcoholic beverage most often involved in drunk driving accidents?" The contestant Jamie buzzed in, stalled for a moment and said Beer but it was ruled that it came after the buzzer. So then Bill says "Now what do I do since that was the correct answer? ....I'll repeat it for Randy..." Bill had a look on his face like he knew he messed up. Obviously, Randy got it right and he won the match as a result. Now, that's on Bill for blowing the question but why didn't they throw it out or at least edit it out and re-shoot it. At least they brought Jamie back later to try to make it right.
And Maria the Yugoslavia blooper I think it was the game before she had an even more infamous blooper:
Bill: What "R" gets it's name from it's ability to erase or rub out pencil marks
Maria: eraser? Oh ****!
Bill: 🤨 Don't worry about it Maria, through the wizardry of editing it'll be "Shucks!"
😅
Bill's hosting I found awkward here, Was he just a little tired from doing 2 shows at once, was he out of his element doing a pure quizzer, nervous succeeding Bill Cullen. Who knows?
I called that number to tryout but it just said no routes found
WE WANT TO SEE THE BLOCKBUSTERS GO BACK ON TELEVISION.
'87 Blockbusters had a digital playing board!!
Does the Alex Trebek show "Double Dare" (1976-77) qualify as something you would cover for "26 Weeks Or Less"?
I read that there was a pilot in 1986 for Blockbusters hosted by Rafferty which kept the 2v1 format. Supposedly the set and presentation resembled the UK version at the time.
I Wish That You Talk About The Show Double Dare On CBS With Alex Trebek From 1976 To 1977
I miss this ahow, even the theme songs!!
I'd be interested in seeing a 26 Weeks Or Less on Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak
Or “Blackout” with Bob Goen.
This was a good show that deserved better. Luckily the UK gave it the fame it deserves
NGL, I honestly hate Rich Jeffries. His voice just wasn't fit for announcing.
GSN has shown both versions over the years, this 80's game show was ahead of its time.in terms of words.
It went up against card sharks (another Goodson revival) on cbs.
And many ABC affiliates were airing Regis and Kathy Lee at that time slot.
Blockbusters '80 unlike Blockbusters '87 had that human interest story in John Hatton who while he was on his initial run had lost everything in a house fire, which drew people to the show to root for him to win.
Interesting about BB87 being a placeholder and having shoddy effort put in it as such. Whereas the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour was the same, a placeholder for Santa Barbara. Yet MGP put a lot more into that. Well the video wall and budget
I liked the one on one blockbusters better than two on one
The British version was always the superior version
I never knew this version of Blockbusters existed until I saw it on GSN and it was not a bad show. However, if it had stay with the original format of 2 heads are better than 1, it might had a good 2-3 year run. Bill Raffety was good as an emcee for this revival, but to be a filler show so Classic Concentration can get ready is an insult cause he wasn't given the chance to make a good run. Could you imagine if this show was with Concentration, Daytime Wheel, $ale of the Century, Super Password, Scrabble and the future Win, Lose, or Draw? NBC would had gave CBS a run for its money
There was also a home version of “Blockbusters” from 1981 or 1982 by MB/Hasbro, and I have not played it.
Blockbusters 87 was different.
Can i have a p please bob
