Been a Sum 41 fan pretty much all my life. They’re one of the biggest reasons I picked up a guitar in the first place. The tones here sounded so accurate, I loved the addition of the harmonist too
The first time I see Ben and John working as a team. And a lot more of explanations about the sound to achieve. The essence of "Sound like...." More of this please!
I saw Sum 41 on their farewell tour. I'm a stagehand, so it takes a lot to impress me as I've seen just about every band come through. Sum 41 was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Bundle of energy, vocals sounded really good, and the playing was on point.
I was saying this to my brother the other day. Blink-182 are my favourite band, but Dave Baksh is the GOAT of the genre when it comes to guitar skill. Some of the solos on their newest album are legitimately incredible, particularly on the "Hell" side.
@@Travis-guy-247 That's because they all came from the punk/metal world as opposed to pop punk. Same with hefe from nofx being an amazing guitarist/soloist/shredder (and obviously nofx were the biggest influence on sum 41!)
@@hellosight95 Yeah absolutely. If you look at their entire discography, it’s actually about 60/40 to the heavier metal sounding stuff rather than pop punk. I definitely think that direction was heavy influenced by Dave as well, he’s a massive fan of Iron Maiden & Metallica. I saw them live in the UK last week and they sounded amazing! Dave is an incredible soloist and Deryck’s voice is sounding stronger than ever. It makes it all the more upsetting that they’re spilling up 💔
While watching this, I suddenly grew a mohawk, a patched up leather jacket, destroyed black jeans and vans old skool appeared on body and now I‘m wheely skating down a bridge! Ultra clean playing! This was so nice to watch and to listens to.
as far as Noodles from The Offspring's rig is concerned, he used his own signature Ibanez models with either P90's or HSH configuration, his amps are Axe-FX with Egnater cabinets, his effects are mainly just the occasional chorus, delay, tremolo, a wah and an overdriven sound. I don't know much about Dexter's rig but he does use Ibanez super strats
My friend who plays drums in our band absolutely loves BT so I’m sure they’d get a kick out of that (I do really like them as well), plus Ian does have a really good guitar tone
Thanks for giving us pop-punk/emo kids a nod! There’s some nuance goes into nailing that tone that I’ve never been great at, so I appreciate the video. More of these, please!
Met dave baksh last year to buy a piece of rack gear he had put up on reverb. Ended up being less than an hour away so I just drove to pick it up. Seemed like a really nice dude. Easy to negotiate with and didnt seem entitled or arrogant. And he gave me a really good price.
I was just rewatching the older one with Matt and Rabea yesterday so this is surprisingly good timing and as a Canadian (specifically from Ontario) this definitely makes me happy to see because Sum is one of my favourite Canadian bands and they only live about an hour and a half away from me lol. Also definitely happy seeing the £1500 return because that gives you a lot more variety for gear to use with these, I’d love to see a video on sounding like System of a Down with Ben and John taking on Daron Malakian and Shavo Odadjian or the Nameless Ghouls from Ghost (a band I’ve been suggesting since Matt and Rabea were still hosting)
These bands all loved numbers in their names. I think this and the MCR episode are the only ones directed at us 00's skater kids. Mild edit: I love both these guys, and think they're great players. But I do legit miss Cici giving a bass player's perspective to the low end of the group. I'd love to see her, or even Bass Lee, whenever a more bass-heavy band comes up.
Nice to see you revisit this one! Can we have a sound like Slipknot's Mick Thomson & Jim Root/Paul Grey (Revisited), Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme & Troy Van Leeuwen/Nick Oliveri (Revisited) Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan & James Iha/Jeff Schroeder (BY busting the bank), Blink 182's Tom DeLonge & Mark Hoppus (BY busting), Steve Vai (without/BY busting), Nick Johnston (without/BY busting), Periphery Jake Bowen, Misha "Bulb" Mansoor, Mark Holcomb & Adam "Nolly" Getgood (without/BY busting), Van Halen's Eddie Van Halen & Michael Anthony (BY busting), Angel Vivaldi (without/BY busting), Kiss' Ace Frehley & Paul Stanley/Gene Simmons (BY busting), Polyphia's Tim Henson & Scott LePage (without/BY busting) or Maroon 5's James Valentine (without/BY busting)
You guys sound like you’ve been playing together for years. It’d be a cool to see you guys do a video recording a song together from each of your inspirations. 2 videos and 2 songs with a sort of studio update style video for each.
Dave also had fantastic taste in gear and tone. I would have gone for a PRS SE singlecut to throwback to his 2000s guitars! Seeing him in those ads and features in old GW magazines was sick
Another amazing video. I would love it if you could do a video on sounds like Trivium both by and without busting the bank. (Specifically I want to hear the sound from their best album In Waves for the without busting the bank, and the sound of their second best album The Sin And The Sentence for the by busting the bank for the seven string guitars. Also I want to see a Linkin Park and White Pony era Deftones video in the future. Keep up the great work guys
The Reverend doesn't have two tone controls. It has a tone and a "bass contour". The Bass contour is their alternative to a coil split, which is cool because it works on humbuckers and p90s to roll off bass. Not really needed for a Sum41 sound, tho
So glad you guys are back doing your little thing. Not that I get tired of Lee and Pete. But they're kind of rock You guys are more towards the heavier end of guitar 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Great setup. Separately I don't know they sounded okay but together it was TOTALLY AWESOME!!!🤘 Keep up this series It's really cool! See you on the next one Maybe do a Metallica one or a Megadeth ! That would be badass. Peace guys😊
This is a pretty awesome video. I want to see one where you guys replicate Thin Lizzy. Also, one where you guys replicate the Smashing Pumpkins would be pretty cool.
Disappointed. Wanted to see DIGITAL JOHN use a Valeton GP200. :) Actually, maybe that could be a nice sub-series here: using modelers at various pricepoints to achieve Sounds Like results....Just as an alternative, as we all know modeling is undeniably [and justifiably] more and more popular with every passing day. Modelers direct or through power amps/FRFR. Why NOT modelers in Sounds Like? :P
Origin Effects get a lot of love, but every pedal I’ve tried (MEQ, RevivalDrive, SlideRig) adds those upper mids / high end sheen (too much presence) when engaged .
Tremendous job with the tonáge, great video. Now the only thing I miss from the Rabea/Matt era is a tad more of that self-deprecating bri'ish humour that comes with heaviness of life and 20 hrs of sun per year (approximation). You're young, life will get you there.
What happened to Dave?? Edit: I will say I missed the host walking around the store discussing the different options while Dave only grabbed a guitar and amp very quickly and went straight to the video room.
I could have sworn Derek used duncan pickups. I know his squier sig had a duncan designed humbucker in it. Also would have been cool to add another person to the video seeing as sum 41 have 3 guitarists
Yeah but no but I don't want to sound like Sum 41, I want to sound like Dokken. 😎 I agree, different pedals do work better with different amps, and bigger speakers add more.
Missed opportunity to start the video by rapping at the worker behind the check out desk.
Quick, RE SHOOT THE VIDEO, & up load it!!
Been a Sum 41 fan pretty much all my life. They’re one of the biggest reasons I picked up a guitar in the first place. The tones here sounded so accurate, I loved the addition of the harmonist too
So glad this is back. That was brilliant.
Slightly different 'bank breaking' budget going from $200-$500 amps to $1500 amps in this one though lmao
Doesn’t bother me - I enjoyed it. 👍
You guys nailed it! It feels just like the early days of Sound Like with Matt & Rabea.
The first time I see Ben and John working as a team.
And a lot more of explanations about the sound to achieve.
The essence of "Sound like...."
More of this please!
You guys absolutely nailed it, sounded like the studio recordings without the drums, bass and vocals. Well done!
I saw Sum 41 on their farewell tour. I'm a stagehand, so it takes a lot to impress me as I've seen just about every band come through. Sum 41 was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Bundle of energy, vocals sounded really good, and the playing was on point.
They’re legitimately one of the best live acts out there
Dave is one of the most underrated guitarists. He's very talented, and unless you're a Sum fan, nobody knows who he is.
I'm not a fan of their music, but he is indeed a great player.
He's your mate Dave,
everybody's got one😂
Dave Baksh is probably the best pop punk guitarist, dude can legitimately shred
like.......kinda underrated? He's not out here in Canada
Enter Strung Out

blown away on how good those two very budget friendly guitars did the jiob so well. I will have to give them a look at the next opportunity.
Cheers guys! Sum 41 massively shaped my youth, enjoyed this watch 🤘
Deryck currently has some signature Mansons I believe now.
While watching this, I suddenly grew a mohawk, a patched up leather jacket, destroyed black jeans and vans old skool appeared on body and now I‘m wheely skating down a bridge!
Ultra clean playing! This was so nice to watch and to listens to.
Love this, can we please have Offspring and/or Billy Talent?
as far as Noodles from The Offspring's rig is concerned, he used his own signature Ibanez models with either P90's or HSH configuration, his amps are Axe-FX with Egnater cabinets, his effects are mainly just the occasional chorus, delay, tremolo, a wah and an overdriven sound.

A little late to the party but I absolutely LOVE this video. So happy to see some love for my favourite punk band from my land
So delighted this series is back! Give the next gen a run of presenting 👍🏻
Awesome video and both rigs complemented each other extremely well. Great playing!

I’m so happy you guys are going more old school.
The Rev doesn't have 2 tones -- one is a tone, the other is a bass cut, which all Revs come with and is super useful
Was going to say this. All guitars should have it.
Praise the bass control contour
These bands all loved numbers in their names. I think this and the MCR episode are the only ones directed at us 00's skater kids.

Dave has been a PRS guy for the majority of his career , honestly a prs se would've really done the trick well , especially a mccarty
I didn’t know I needed a Harmonist, but here I am. That sounded so fun
The editing is also fantastic in this video! Cheers guys!
Absolutely nailed the tone guys, that’s very impressive.
3:09 I nearly had a heart attack seeing that headstock almost clip the body on the wall mounted guitar.
That Reverend sounded great, the new budget pays off. Well done lads.
Always interesting to hear the thought process behind how you get particular sounds. Thanks for the lesson!
Nice to see you revisit this one!

Im glad they brought back actually shopping around Andertons for their gear.
Amazing tone there guys, safe to say you nailed it! Loving those Marshalls
Great episode! That was fun to watch. Sound was on point with that harmoizer. I didn't knot that pedal before.
Awesome, like a time warp back to my childhood
absolutely nailed it im so happy
THANK YOU!!!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO
You guys did a great job on this one! That Reverend guitar is so cool! 👍
Glad to see the return of $1500. Here's hoping for more Punk bands in Sounds Like.
Holy fuck!! They are doing what we want to see now!!
Killer tones guys! Love the American Pie era of punk.
nice playing. the classics ! :)
ROFL!
"Old school budget, so no more Katanas" > moving back to DSL... Checks out :P
You guys sound like you’ve been playing together for years. It’d be a cool to see you guys do a video recording a song together from each of your inspirations. 2 videos and 2 songs with a sort of studio update style video for each.

Oh yes!👍more Ben and John needed!! 🎸🎸

That Reverend is making me feel all sorts of things.
Marshall JCM 800 combo is attached to high sensitivity input, on low must be less bright, 10 inch speakers are not a downside
this is maybe the most faithful sounding wbb i've seen
I'd love to see an episode on my favourite band Spoon!
I'm so proud that they are Canadian! 🇨🇦
The Reverend doesn't have two tone controls. It has a tone and a "bass contour". The Bass contour is their alternative to a coil split, which is cool because it works on humbuckers and p90s to roll off bass. Not really needed for a Sum41 sound, tho
Great sound even without the 'sound like' part! That Reverend is a bargain but the Gristlemeister knows good guitars 😉
Thanks for the songs of my childhood ❤
So glad you guys are back doing your little thing. Not that I get tired of Lee and Pete. But they're kind of rock You guys are more towards the heavier end of guitar 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Great setup. Nice job guyz , i want an amon Amarth without busting the bank now :) 🎉
This is a pretty awesome video. I want to see one where you guys replicate Thin Lizzy. Also, one where you guys replicate the Smashing Pumpkins would be pretty cool.
Is Derek Wibbly, a distant cousin of Dwayne Dibbly?
Please do Type o-Negative. Love them and would be great for the bass rig. Cheers
Very successful video.

I want that para tele
do Smashing Pumpkins next!!
Seconded✋
Nice one lads!
No wayyy I just watched the original one the other day 🤘
What happened to Dave?? Edit: I will say I missed the host walking around the store discussing the different options while Dave only grabbed a guitar and amp very quickly and went straight to the video room.
sounds so good!!!!
I could have sworn Derek used duncan pickups. I know his squier sig had a duncan designed humbucker in it. Also would have been cool to add another person to the video seeing as sum 41 have 3 guitarists
Ah now i know what the bandana is for 😮
"dave's possessed hair"
Rabea and Matt already did ‘without busting the bank’ about 4 years ago. How about ‘BY busting the bank?’ I want to see that one.
That's harmonist is sick
what happened to dave?
heck ya
Good amount of time on the video with Ben explaining why his amp of choice was the wrong call.
i love that reverend
Ben and John jam with Rabea would be epic.
Interesting. Obviously Tom Thacker plays gibson Les Pauls live instead of Derrick nowadays. But still sounded good on a budget
Busting the bank to sound super trashy would be silly anyhow ✌️
How is a 250 pounds pedal on a budget though?
If im not wrong dave used prs like back in the days right?
Still waiting for a souds like Scorpions !
Do Spiritbox!!!!
What about bass?
Good Canadian lads.
Punk, pop punk, and hardcore!
Yeah but no but I don't want to sound like Sum 41, I want to sound like Dokken. 😎 I agree, different pedals do work better with different amps, and bigger speakers add more.
We'd all love a blow switch.
Can you do sounds like blink-182 with the new starcaster. Songs from 2003 onwards?
To be honest that JCM800 has basically only one usable sound. Don’t really like the Marshalls they’re always way too bright. Would love to love them.
How is a klon transparent????
Its strange to not hear the "digital" part of John
Those P90s were nice
Anyone still watching Malcolm in the Middle? That In Too Deep riff is so damn good!
Will forever be the drivers test song
Did John say “Bursting the bank”? 😂😂😂
Can someone explain the DSL bit?
do the Brian Jonestown massacre
