  • German Shepherd - Avoid These 5 Things With Your German Shepherd!
How to train your German Shepherd? In this dog training video, Tom Davis teaches you how you should properly train your German Shepherd to live a healthy life.
There is a lot to learn when it comes to training a dog, especially a large breed like a German Shepherd. But, if you do the right kind of training, your dog will be a wonderful addition to your family and will be a terrific companion for years to come.
The best way to train a German Shepherd is with consistent, positive reinforcement. Treats, toys, and a loving voice are all good tools to encourage your dog to behave in the way that you wish.
When your puppy is learning to sit, start by holding a treat in front of their nose and slowly move it over their head. Once they begin to look at the treat, give them a reward. Repeat the process until they can sit for longer periods of time without your help.
Exercise is essential for the health of your German Shepherd, as it keeps their muscles strong and helps to reduce pain related to joint issues. Including glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM in their diet can also help to maintain joint health and reduce the onset of osteoarthritis, a common problem among this breed.

I'm an Indian Army Veteran. Had Labradors, Boxers, Cockers and GSD's with me one time or the other but, while all these 4 breeds make excellent pets, GSD is the best. I have kept behind a male pup from a litter that I have recently bred and shall develope it into my life time companion. Your videos are wonderful, specially because they are very high on content and low on clutter. Namaste

George, our GSD, learned place, stay, break and more 2 years ago when he was 3 months old thanks to Tom! It has paid off and we use those key commands every single day. Growing out of puppyhood, he became more reactive and protective. All we had to do was say “George go place”. The sooner the training the happier everyone is in the long run! 🎉

I picked up a 9month female, Nayla 4 months ago. She was on her way to a shelter. Nephew's co-worker was fed up, so he kept texting me pictures, till I caved in. She's been through a few homes, hence the term German Shredder. She was so calm and timid the first month, after that she pushed every boundary. I keep telling her I'm sending you to a shelter, but secretly we got too attached to each other the last 4 months.

I can't thank you enough for these videos. We just adopted our first German Shepherd. She had ready been adopted and was returned because she was chasing the chickens and the livestock (REALLY?!? No kidding). She's also very reactive with other dogs. For those reasons, they had her on a "watch list" and almost tried to talk us out of adopting her. I saw a stressed out puppy that needed a ton of love and training. She has definitely been a challenge, but we would never dream of giving her back. I have been working with her for 2 weeks and she has already come so far! I refuse to give up on her. Your videos have given me SO much hope. Thank you for all you do!

I'm from Portugal, and because of financial problems i can't get my dog trained with a professional so your videos are realy helpfull, i started training her a couple months ago and only now with the tips i get from your videos she's starting to get some progress and that makes me have hope because she's reactive and now that she's not trying to pull on the leash every time we take her out on walks i believe my life will be a lot easier and fun for her because i will be able to take her out more and play instead of worrying if she is going to react to someone or something.
So thank you a lot, and please keep the good work.

This is really helpful! German shepherds are so incredibly smart but people can mistake their behavior for aggression because of their size and breed.
I'm training a German Shepherd puppy to be my service dog and training him is so rewarding but can be challenging and frustrating at times. He's my first shepherd and I'm discovering all the crazy stages of puppyhood they go through. At just 9 months old he's ~90lbs, so people, including myself, forget he's still a puppy when he makes a mistake.

Thank you for the helpful tips!! I adopted a Shepard mix with reactivity issues. The longer I have had her, the more the reactivity has gone away. I have been exposing her to new environments that are apart of my lifestyle. I make sure everyday she is getting the exercise she needs. She LOVES LOVES playing fetch. For mental, we work on training and then she uses enrichment toys like the Snuffle. She has made tremendous progress in the last 6 months. Watching the videos you post each week has truly helped me develop a great relationship and bond with her, which she so desperately needed.

He still gets very excited when out especially when we arrive at the local forest he gets super excited. Im wondering if its just getting him used to these new are areas before he will be calmer and maybe not bark at other doga as much. Or is other training needed? He will literally go for some dogs not just bark. Im also booking him in for the snip.

Love your videos - we have always had GSD our newest is just around 13 months - we rescued from a family that couldn't care for him. We are struggling- he has some bad habits and is not socialized. Trying to figure out the best way to socialize - he is extremely "aggressive " (out of fear/anxiety) when anyone comes to our house-to the extreme that we've told family and friends to not come over until we figure this out. Anyway- looking through your videos for help 😊

Virtual one on one, sounds nice, but it’s really no better than watching a good video which provides all the answers without extra information that causes confusion with new dog owners…plus it provides more benefits to the whole community as a whole ,than just one person..now a one on one in person, that’s a whole different experience, and well worth the time and effort for both the trainer, the owner ,and the dog..

Tom - really appreciate your videos! I have a 1 year old GSD and she's soo scared outside of the house. She is ready to act like a jerk to any dog or person we see while walking and runs and hides if a stranger comes in the house.
I am going to start using your techniques ASAP and would love to get some training from you as well.

These videos really helped me learn how to meet his needs and work through some behavior issues. Thanks Tom!!

The videos are very informative, and I also lucked out in meeting a lady with a 3 yr old GSD. 13 month old Nayla was always aggressive to other dogs. She convinced me to take Nayla off her leash and introduced Yuma. I was very hesitant, but in the end, all she wanted was some one to run and play with. Over the last 3 weekends my GSD has been introduced to quite a variety of dog breeds. I don't understand why she reacts so differently when she is on a leash.

@@alcyr5655 please don't use a harness. You have to take several steps back and work on your leash control. Your dog is acting this way because he/she doesn't understand you are capable enough to handle the situation. Tom has TONS of videos on this and can help you reset your relationship.

Great training tips for our dogs, especially our GSD. He has Ortz command that we use for elevated place and he’s gotten rusty because of me not reinforcing it consistently. Half the time his Ortz ends up as a Platz on the floor next to the spot I’m going for. Appreciate the training reminders, Tom.
