I can't thank you enough for these videos. We just adopted our first German Shepherd. She had ready been adopted and was returned because she was chasing the chickens and the livestock (REALLY?!? No kidding). She's also very reactive with other dogs. For those reasons, they had her on a "watch list" and almost tried to talk us out of adopting her. I saw a stressed out puppy that needed a ton of love and training. She has definitely been a challenge, but we would never dream of giving her back. I have been working with her for 2 weeks and she has already come so far! I refuse to give up on her. Your videos have given me SO much hope. Thank you for all you do!
I just adopted a 2 year old. It was so quick I know nothing about this breed. So I am on a huge learning curve but I've had some crazy dogs before and I like having a smart one again!
I'm from Portugal, and because of financial problems i can't get my dog trained with a professional so your videos are realy helpfull, i started training her a couple months ago and only now with the tips i get from your videos she's starting to get some progress and that makes me have hope because she's reactive and now that she's not trying to pull on the leash every time we take her out on walks i believe my life will be a lot easier and fun for her because i will be able to take her out more and play instead of worrying if she is going to react to someone or something. So thank you a lot, and please keep the good work.
George, our GSD, learned place, stay, break and more 2 years ago when he was 3 months old thanks to Tom! It has paid off and we use those key commands every single day. Growing out of puppyhood, he became more reactive and protective. All we had to do was say “George go place”. The sooner the training the happier everyone is in the long run! 🎉

I would LOVE a training session for my German Shepherd! It’s such a fun and loving breed. We found ours abandoned and starved, and took him in. He’s so smart, but he’s very stubborn.
Thank you for the helpful tips!! I adopted a Shepard mix with reactivity issues. The longer I have had her, the more the reactivity has gone away. I have been exposing her to new environments that are apart of my lifestyle. I make sure everyday she is getting the exercise she needs. She LOVES LOVES playing fetch. For mental, we work on training and then she uses enrichment toys like the Snuffle. She has made tremendous progress in the last 6 months. Watching the videos you post each week has truly helped me develop a great relationship and bond with her, which she so desperately needed.
I adopted a 4 year old gsd that was locked up in a small garden. I have him 2 months now. Training is going great but I cant improve his reaction to other dogs yet. He still gets very excited when out especially when we arrive at the local forest he gets super excited. Im wondering if its just getting him used to these new are areas before he will be calmer and maybe not bark at other doga as much. Or is other training needed? He will literally go for some dogs not just bark. Im also booking him in for the snip.
Our GSD is a HUGE BLESSING for our family - we are so grateful for him. He is such a sweetheart but definitely has a mind of his own which of course is not a bad thing but he will not listen when he really wants something. We need to work on obedience with him
I have a gsd mal mix that this channel has helped so much. We don’t currently use our place a ton, in our living room we have a crate instead and no room for a place. In our next house, moving this summer, we are going to start using place a lot more so that our dog can be out of her crate more, but also be in a structured place where she is safe and not in anyones way.
I picked up a 9month female, Nayla 4 months ago. She was on her way to a shelter. Nephew's co-worker was fed up, so he kept texting me pictures, till I caved in. She's been through a few homes, hence the term German Shredder. She was so calm and timid the first month, after that she pushed every boundary. I keep telling her I'm sending you to a shelter, but secretly we got too attached to each other the last 4 months.
Hi, me and my wife have been lucky enough bring a rescue shepard to be a part of our family. Have you come across any resources you found helpful? I hope you don't mind me asking
@@matthewdownham2290 Tom's videos here on youtube have been my biggest help. My dog's reactions are all fear based, so we work to slowly introduce her to new things.
This is really helpful! German shepherds are so incredibly smart but people can mistake their behavior for aggression because of their size and breed. I'm training a German Shepherd puppy to be my service dog and training him is so rewarding but can be challenging and frustrating at times. He's my first shepherd and I'm discovering all the crazy stages of puppyhood they go through. At just 9 months old he's ~90lbs, so people, including myself, forget he's still a puppy when he makes a mistake.
I can relate. Got Nayla at 9 months old. She knows how to push all my buttons. 4 months ago, sweetest puppy, timid and well behaved. People look at me funny when I say she is just a puppy.
Oh don't be so sure. Often times it is aggression. We have a shepherd. He was a real excited sweetheart before age 2.5. then one day his flip switched and he is extremely aggressive with other large dogs and strangers. Be careful
My GSD will be 10 months old in a few days and he's 103 lbs. He's incredibly smart but is very strong! I just bought the herm sprenger prong to help me with my training.
@@Sunshines83 we've been using one too, It's made a huge difference in our leash training! We use a smaller chain size, which has more prongs, and it's been great.
Thank you Tom!!!! I have a 2 year old male GSD, and I love him to pieces. I realized through your video that I talk to him WAY too much 😅...he definitely gets enough exercise but I'll work on not talking to him, but rather give him short simple commands 😁
I am workings on the place command with my GSD. Works without distractions but still a ways to go when the mailman comes 🤣🤣. Would love a one on one with Tom!
Thanks Tom, the place command is a game changer. We love our GSD, Jett, he’s amazing, the best thing we ever did was hire a trainer who specialises in GSD’s, they have their own GSD pack, and Jett loves hanging with them.
I tune in every week for these tips! One of my few subscriptions that I have to watch, always learning something even after this many years tuning in, thanks!
I have a three year old German Shepard, he is very anxious and can be difficult to handle, very reactive towards men. We weren’t able give him socialization when he was younger because of COVID. But I can’t stress enough all of these steps and starting them with your dog at a young age. Because without proper leadership these dogs will try and solve the issues by themselves and this puts a lot of stress on them, and my dog is proof of this. Thanks for the great tips Tom! Always putting something up that is just what I need. 😊
I just got a Beautiful GS she just turned 2 but I truly believe she was abused.. I'm 57 and trying I will not give her to anyone ever. I don't know much about them but she DESERVES A CHANCE, at a great life with me. ❤️ 🙏. I love your channel I've been watching for along time.
Great videos. Our GSD is 2yrs old. Our biggest issue is barking and lunging at cars. I agree I think I need to get her used to things more. Enjoy all the teachings.
Watching Tom’s videos actually gave me the desire to get another GSD so I got a young rescue and I adore her! After 6 mos in a shelter she knew nothing, 4 mos later, with structure , exercise, games, obedience and a ton of love she’s a whole different girl ❤
We have had only German Shepherds and these videos are definitely a great Refresher! Most days it is easy to get the physical exercise in, but we often forget about the mental exercise they need. Thank you for all these reminders!
You're videos (and podcasts!) have been a game changer for us and our GSD. We used to have her "place" be her crate, but have found it's created some reactivity for certain scenarios, so we have now shifted the place to her favorite chair to sleep in. It has definitely helped, but still a work in progress. Never thought about a "place" while out and about with something you bring along - brilliant. She's only 7 months, and we are doing our best to stimulate her physically and mentally, but all of your content has been so helpful throughout the process. Thank you!
I don't have a GSD... but I absolutely love every video you share! Every breed out there needs some kind of mental and physical stimulation, it creates a happy dog ❤️
I have been working doing all these things with my german shepherd! she still has the anxiety but its definitely helping. Thank you for all of your videos!
I love all your tipps, we have the dogtra because of you. It was the best choice we could have made. We have implemented all your tipps. Our German sheperad is doing great. We owe you something🥰
GREAT ADVICE ! so many people get GSDs and have no idea what they need as a breed..So many end up in shelters and its sad,....to see good dogs b put down for behavioural issues that could have easily been avoided...Keep these videos coming !!
I just now got a German shepherd and am finding she has no training, is aggressive toward other dogs and other issues. You are becoming a life saver with all of your info thank you.
Your videos and podcasts and courses have helped me so much with raising my German shepherd! She is almost a year old and is the way she is because of you!! Thank you so much for all of your amazing free content 🤎
Great tips Tom! I am in the process of training my GSD at the moment. He isn't getting along with my chow chow so getting them use to each other has been a big one
I'm an Indian Army Veteran. Had Labradors, Boxers, Cockers and GSD's with me one time or the other but, while all these 4 breeds make excellent pets, GSD is the best. I have kept behind a male pup from a litter that I have recently bred and shall develope it into my life time companion. Your videos are wonderful, specially because they are very high on content and low on clutter. Namaste
Our GSD is so smart so thank you for the advice! I will be implementing the place command because our boy Leo is too friendly he just wants to love and jump on everything and everyone so this will be helpful!
Thank You! I am getting a 8 mth yr old today!! Have 2 other dogs so I never had a dog this young. The other 2 were rescue dog. So I really want the new dog have a great life.
Thank you for everything, we have a GSD who was attacked as a puppy and now she is scared and reactive, hard work but we owe it to her to feel safe with us and love watching your videos.
Absolutely love German Shepherds! Looking forward to learning more about them so I can be prepared when I finally get one of my own and start training them! Thank you for all your hard work and you have inspired me to maybe be a dog trainer in the near by future!
my dog was so good i left her staying on the side of the road almost a half a mile away before i realized it, she was staring attentively at me and our motorhome waiting, i still feel shame for forgetting her even though it was a highly stressfull situation, when i saw her bolt towards me after me signaling her i grew more appreciation for her and that never stopped her whole life
I love your training videos. My daughter bought me a German Shepherd for Christmas 2022. I was planning on getting one much later this year due to me having a lot of physical issues from a car accident. I have tried working within my means in training my Shepherd, but I am way behind in training because of my injuries. My Shepherd has a lot of distraction issues, and his recall isn't at the level I hoped for. I am definitely going to be using the steps you taught in the video. How I wish you were in Australia. I love your videos. It was from you I got a Herm Springer prong collar 💯 % improvement on the lead. Thank you again. God bless you!
My gsd pup was listening very well, both indoors and outdoors. Although since she turned 6 months old, she's become disobedient whilst outdoors. Leash pulling so i have started to go back to the basics of training
I’m going to work on this with my 3yo female gsd, Ella! Unfortunately, she thinks that she is the boss and is difficult to handle in a lot of situations. Thanks so much for the great information, Tom!
I love the tip to do place stays out and about and the creative idea to bring along a yoga mat or towel. Place is probably my most often used cue with my dog and I’m excited to try using it out in public more often!
We named our all black Shepard Zora too!! After the new corvette of course, all her other dogs were named accordingly as well, truck based though, diesel, duramax, and turbo
I have a 13 week old and its my 1st dog that ive owned. And he is a handfull. I am socializing him around my people, and i take him places in the truck. But ill tell u what, if i didnt fall in love with how smart he is and the potential he has, i wouldnt put myself thru the mischievous dog stuff he does. Lol. I feel LOVE is the most important trait to teach them.
Tom - really appreciate your videos! I have a 1 year old GSD and she's soo scared outside of the house. She is ready to act like a jerk to any dog or person we see while walking and runs and hides if a stranger comes in the house. I am going to start using your techniques ASAP and would love to get some training from you as well.
Another informative video. While I don't have a GSD, everything you said we can apply to any breed, as boredom usually leads to behavioral issues. Maybe in the future you could do a short video on the 'leave it command' as leave it can be used in so many situations. .
Love your videos. Our 4th GSD had high anxiety and very protective. We try to do both the mental and physical stimulation more than daily but it doesn’t seem enough for her. Would love a training video with her. She is selectively social, we ordered a do not pet collar for her while he hasn’t bit anyone yet she has twice shown wanting behavior when people she doesn’t know try to pet her or enter our “space”. Super intelligent, our most intelligent yet.
Started working with my parents' GSD recently. She'd been lacking the mental stimulation piece and her anxious behavior has gone down to extremely minimal. The "too many words" bit of advice is incredible - I've never heard that before, so I'm looking forward to seeing the benefits!
We just took in an 18 month old German shepherd at our animal Sanctuary. Could use help with him with newer people. Handling is mostly on me because My husband has a TBI
Thank you for doing a GSD video. Now I know my GSD isn't the only over protective one. We've been working on place, come and stay she's got down very well, but I did need to know some ideas for what to use. Thank you again.
All the tips have definitely helped my GSD, I do have a second rescue dog. I wouldn't mind a lesson about how to properly walk two dogs at the same time! but thanks for all the help so far!
Tom’s videos have helped me so much with my GSD mix. I thought I was getting a different mix of breeds when I adopted him, but of course, you never know quite what you’re getting when rescuing. These videos really helped me learn how to meet his needs and work through some behavior issues. Thanks Tom!!
Love these tips as I am a new Shepherd (mix) puppy owner and he is SO smart and I am struggling to get all the essential training elements down, so THANK YOU Tom!!
Thanks for the vid! Considering adopting a German Shepard from the shelter, want to make sure she gets the life she deserves. Working on learning mental exercises, physical won’t be a problem I’m training for a marathon!
Thanks for the video! It goes for my Husky too! Its been hard for the last 2 months having a 6/7 month husky in heat and trying to train and walk her. (Did go see a vet, she is healthy, just rare issue. She will get fixed.)
Great training tips for our dogs, especially our GSD. He has Ortz command that we use for elevated place and he’s gotten rusty because of me not reinforcing it consistently. Half the time his Ortz ends up as a Platz on the floor next to the spot I’m going for. Appreciate the training reminders, Tom.
Love my 16 month old GSD. She doesn't really bark much, but I definitely talk too much to her! I have to admit I haven't trained her much after the first 6 months or so because family things took up too much of my time. I need to get back to training. She knows a lot, is very smart, but tends to ignore more often when food isn't involved. Need to fix that! Thanks for all the tips!
Thanks for the pointers Tom. We try to apply them as much as possible with Cooper (our GSD). He will have 23 months next week. He is tough cookie but we are slowly progressing. Patience is of the essence…
I love this video! I am struggling with my 16 mo GSD Milla. I try to do training with her every day, but recently I have not been able to get her to attend. I am going to try some of these and see how she does. Thank you!!!

my dog was so good i left her staying on the side of the road almost a half a mile away before i realized it, she was staring attentively at me and our motorhome waiting, i still feel shame for forgetting her even though it was a highly stressfull situation, when i saw her bolt towards me after me signaling her i grew more appreciation for her and that never stopped her whole life
Because I have a German Shepherd, I love these tips and tricks as I am learning! Thanks for sharing as always
Thank you! Very helpful advice for training my 5 month GSD. I appreciate all the great tips you offer.
Thanks Tom, love from India will do all these german dog care tips.
I have a 5 month old German Shepherd. She is now slightly testing her training. We are in the process of reinforcing her training and elevating it.
any update?
@@ismailchowdhury9151 She’s great! She is now 1 year 7 months and is my best friend and a wonderful family dog
We named our all black Shepard Zora too!! After the new corvette of course, all her other dogs were named accordingly as well, truck based though, diesel, duramax, and turbo
Thank you for your videos Tom......I watch and rewatch them all the time. You are making life better and safer for countless people and dogs. 😊
GSD’s are great dogs when trained properly! I loved mine. Thank you for putting this information out in the world Tom, you do great work
This is fantastic thank you! Mine is 11 weeks and 5 days, this is definitely going to be added to her training schedule!
That’s so helpful! I’m a first time GSD owner. Any information is always helpful.
Loved this video. This is helpful for my wife and I and our GSD!
Great advice, thank you! Your videos have been so helpful in training my malinois/collie mix.
Thanks so much. We are bringing home a German Shepherd puppy and are sure to use these tips from day 1!
Yes please train us and our GSD ❤
Having the same exact problem with mine. Any updates? have you been able to figure out a way to get it to calm down a bit more?
Always informative and to the point! Thanks for the continual great advise.
Having to learn a lot as a first time German Shepherd owner. Your videos are helping a ton!
Hey , appreciate your videos . Recently got a 7 months old German shepherd and im excited to start training him 😊
Thank you! I recently adopted a GSD from the local rescue. This is very helpful!
Just starting to train my GSD. I am looking forward to learning a lot from your videos.
Started working with my parents' GSD recently. She'd been lacking the mental stimulation piece and her anxious behavior has gone down to extremely minimal. The "too many words" bit of advice is incredible - I've never heard that before, so I'm looking forward to seeing the benefits!
Another great video !! Thank you for sharing training tips every week , I sure try to learn from all of them to train my 18 month old GSD .
Loved the suggestions in this video for different games and mental and physical exercise!! Thanks Tom for your knowledge you pass along!!
Man, you’re truly one of the best I’ve seen around there I really could use some similar advice for real
Thank you for your training videos to teach me what to look for in dogs. Training tips have helped me with my golden retriever.
Thanks for the pointers Tom. We try to apply them as much as possible with Cooper (our GSD). He will have 23 months next week. He is tough cookie but we are slowly progressing. Patience is of the essence…
Are a lot of germ Shepard trying and challenging?
We do not have shepherd, but this videos is so much helping us. Thank you!
Wow this are such great tips! Working on these commands this week thank you for all you do for us
Great training advice. Bixby is my 3rd GSD and knows place, but still working on duration when doorbell rings or someone comes into house.
I love this video! I am struggling with my 16 mo GSD Milla. I try to do training with her every day, but recently I have not been able to get her to attend. I am going to try some of these and see how she does. Thank you!!!
Great advice.
I have adopted a German Shepherd and appreciate your time and knowledge 🙂🙏
