The beginning of the broadcast shows Tiger Woods teeing off on number one. Mike Weir had not even teed off yet. You missing the beginning of the broadcast when it aired live doesn't mean CBS didn't show all 18 holes of the final group.
Not to mention how quickly he called the bunker shot that hit him. The older I get, the more I appreciate this integrity. He probably knew at that moment his chances were dashed but he still had the fortitude to call it immediately. What a man.

Much agreed! As a Canadian, I have seen Mike Weir's gradual progression from a regular Canadian Tour pro quality (i.e. nothing special since the Canadian Tour is not even up to Nike Tour quality) gradually working his way up to major championship contender/winner at the very peak of his game! He had to do gradual, hard work with the progression I saw! It makes sense, too, since he wasn't even close to a household name - in golf circles - until his 30s!

With all due respect to Maggert, and that's alot, when there is any doubt about clearing a bunker lip, one must use more loft. You can power up a sand wedge or accept the greenside lay-up, in his case. That was harsh.
As a lefty I was excited for Mike Weir,in retrospect I believe Mattiace was hard done by,he obviously was desperate to hit the practice ground in order to stay loose and maintain his rhythm but was forced into the Butler Cabin by over-zealous officials of ANGC and only had time to hit a few putts.

I know my comment is different. Being Canadian and watchin Wierze win was amazing. After a hockey tourney , in which we won would of been a story to tell. Although 1 year to the weekend my fiancee died and my 2 year old son watched me play hockey for the first time all the while surrounded by my best friends and family will always be an amazing moment in my life .
Anyone complaint aboot tiger getting too much attention. The dude is a Tiger Slam winner and it was new to everyone. The reason ur local course exists the way it does is likely due to this guy somehow. Have respect for greatness. From Canada love weir :)
Brett Sirum I’ll always appreciate Marggert for the 1999 Ryder Cup. He and Hal Sutton were literally the only Americans who played well (and this was a stacked American roster on which they were probably among the lowest ranked players) before Sunday singles. Sunday wouldn’t have been possible without that pairing.
Hard not to root for Maggert after what happened to him on 3. That's something that happens to us mortals, not the pros. What a bad break. He deserved better.

Jason W He had a legit chance to win. Played holes 3-8 +5 after getting to within 3. Pretty amazing comeback with a 66 in the third round after making the cut on the number though. Strange how he took such a wild swing on the 3rd tee when in ‘02 he took a 2 or 3 iron of the tee and ended up making birdie.
@@bretts4544 His driver on the 3rd in -03 is probably the strangest tactical error I’ve ever seen him make. Even with a perfect drive that’s the wrong play. When he won in -19 he won because he didn’t make even one tactical error and especially at 12 he showed great patience and awareness.
Jeff Maggert has to be the most unluckiest golfer around. Golf does have some of the most bizarre and ridiculous rules of any sports. How can you penalise a player TWO shots when the golf ball hits him totally by accident. That is really diabolical and a stupid rule. Credit to Mike Weir for holing pressure packed par putts on the 17th and 18th greens, to force the playoff.

I was in high school working at Wendy’s when this happened. We had the TV going in the break room. Everyone huddled around it watching Mike win!!

A playoff like that is essentially match play. Once Weir holed out, it was over.
