An incredibly gutsy win from Mike. A great shot at 15 and two tough pars at 17 and 18 when he knew that one bad shot would cost him the Masters. A brave win.

Years later, in a interview, Mike Weir said that the 10th green was re-rolled prior to the playoff and both he and Mattiace were unaware this happened. That is why their putts were so fast.

Yea,they were both confused by the speed. The crew made a mistake and rolled #10 green not realizing they had changed the playoff format to begin on #10.

Carey M the playoff had always begun on #10. This was actually the final time they started on #10. The green-rolling incident was simply a (very) rare moment of incompetence by the Augusta National

Not to mention how quickly he called the bunker shot that hit him. The older I get, the more I appreciate this integrity. He probably knew at that moment his chances were dashed but he still had the fortitude to call it immediately. What a man.

Much agreed! As a Canadian, I have seen Mike Weir's gradual progression from a regular Canadian Tour pro quality (i.e. nothing special since the Canadian Tour is not even up to Nike Tour quality) gradually working his way up to major championship contender/winner at the very peak of his game! He had to do gradual, hard work with the progression I saw! It makes sense, too, since he wasn't even close to a household name - in golf circles - until his 30s!
