  • Tales of the Tardis is a Doctor Who spin-off released on November 1st 2023 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the show. Whilst it is primarily made for
fans of the classic series, I watched it as a modern who fan, and here are my thougths.

Of course people who loved these era's/doctors & companions should watch it-mainly the talking section. Thanks to the people who have uploaded these on UA-cam from me in Australia.

Yes, I know its obvious 😂. Felt that I should still state it though.

That’s funny because as a classic fan I thought it was more for
New who fans as a jumping on point… so what does that say 😂

I think it can be, like I said, gives a little insight/preview. I just wasn’t a fan of it playing the original episodes out in full.

Your criticism is fair. It's nice that they have put up an intro scene with people associated with each story to introduce it, but given that they have also made all the original episodes available on the iplayer for the anniversary year too, I'm not sure what the point is. Maybe it motivates you to have a look at a particular story again (like, I wasn't actually planning on re-watching The Three Doctors, but with an intro by Katy Manning and the kid who played Clyde in the Sarah Jane adventures, I did actually do that). But I think you make a good point that seeing the episode in its original context is probably a better option for a serious Dr Who fan.

Thats definitely how I feel, I know many people can just watch random episodes but I always have to start from the beginning with a show😂. I think they do a great job though for people who have watched these episodes before, like you said, those beginning scenes can easily make you want to rewatch a given story, especially when the characters are looking back and talking about it.

I think you are overestimating the degree to which it makes any difference to watch stories from the original run in context. Assuming you have to watch something in order is understandable mistake, given that is how virtually all modern shows work. But it is not really how things worked back then. These stories are very much standalone. Sometimes it is nice to see a character's introductory story before you meet them, but it isn't ever really necessary (ironically, Curse of Fenric is the one exception to that, as it is the most recent and most akin to modern storytelling, it is the culmination of Ace's arc)

I haven’t watched much of the Classic content yet and dont really know much about the tv landscape back then. That may be the case, I have just always hated starting things in the middle. I always want to watch it all in order and I cant even get myself to watch things out of order, even with sitcoms, which are probably even less connected.😂

@@TheLaneDW I have to agree with @nimonus here. In the classic era, each story was serialized into multiple episodes, but could be enjoyed on its own because it wasn't tightly connected to the rest of the stories in that season / series. NuWho doesn't serialize the stories much, aside from the occasional two-parter, and instead has arcs across the whole season / series. You are absolutely correct that watching most NuWho episodes benefit from watching them in context because of that arc, but that wasn't as important in the classic era.

@@thecrye6798 i understand. Its just a preference thing for me though. My brain just like doing things in order. I cannot physically make myself watch them out of order

I think if what you say is true, then this show is a failure. This show isn't meant for Classic Fans, it's meant for New Who Fans. I'd argue that for most Classic Fans, these episodes are a direct downgrade to the original episodes with the 'new content' doing nothing but disrupting the pacing. So if it isn't working for you, it's not gonna be working for anyone. I would recommend not watching Classic Who in order and simply jumping in with the 7th where you're most interested. Doctor Who is an episodic show, watching chronologically is only gonna make it a chore for you to get to the stuff you actually want to see and it's not like there are season arcs like New Who

Really, I always saw this as a treat for the classic fans to see new footage with their favourites. Also im not the most excited for 7s era necessarily but im more excited than I was before seeing any of him. I actually dont mind going in order too. I love the show and want to watch it all anyway 👍.

I watched them, they were mostly bad. Very low rent. The McCoy one wasn't bad though.
