    Been using SEM for 15 years. Great product. Acetone is perfect prep. Sometimes mixing 50/50 acetone and 99% isopropyl alcohol helps it not flash off to quick on the leather. With leather I noticed that when it gets a little tacky from the prep it’s the best time to spray it, perfect bond.

    Thanks for covering this and presenting SEM products to the masses. A lot of people are not familiar with their products. Was a little surprised you didn't use some variety of scotch pad or SEM's grit based soap to abrade the surface.

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  11 місяців тому

      Hello J, You are so welcome! Acetone always gets the job done. It is very harsh on plastics and vinyl's. I was using that decades before there ever was a pad or grit soap. I have never had a problem. Don't be too surprised and although those might be helpful I don't think they are always necessary.

    Also with the acetone use a proper nylon bristle brush, with a wood handle, unpainted, to clean in the tiny crevices, and get all the dirt out. You can use isopropyl alcohol there, to get the dirt free and out, then use a blonde medium paint brush with the acetone to degrease and prepare the surface, stripping off the top layer of oxidised material, which is what the acetone does on plastic and leather. Do not leave the surface wet for any time, the acetone will destroy the plastic is left in contact, you want the minimum time on surface to clean and strip, nothing more.
    However for plastic where it has a embossed surface that has worn away, you can actually use the acetone to restore this, using a terry cloth rag folded into a flat even pad, that is pressed into the surface wet for around 30 seconds, to make the surface ripple and match the rest somewhat. Also works for surfaces that have been plastic welded to fix them, to sort of hide the weld line.

    I have always used laquar thinner instead of acetone. Is there a difference? I also lightly sand the vinyl/leather as well. I have seats I did 20 years ago with still awesome results today! Even though I love the spray vinyl cans, I prefer using the liquid dye I apply with form brushes or spray with a gun. The "liquid" is definitely more durable. You should be using a Adhesion Promoter before painting plastic and after sanding. It will help bond the paint to the plastic surface.

      You know... I think you're right, but to be real tho.. a lot of things they tell us are necessary are or could be BS just to make more money. It's hard to really know anything for sure unless you test things out yourself or learn from somebody who really has good knowledge on these things. Like an idiot that spent years screwing up his own paint jobs to figure most out the hard ways in life... Other idiots you can't give you the right info sometimes because they just forget themselves and have to repeat some things over again. 🤦
      But who knows that could be right because it's seems to be the right process order of things, but I honestly can't say if I can even tell the difference and even if I think that I do or don't right now I could have just forgotten and I'm not all that sure. 😒

      Hello Mark, Acetone is the adhesion promoter, It roughens up the plastic and vinyl for the spray dye to hold on to it. I would never spray dye anything without the prep first. Ask any experienced body man. Please keep liking and watching!

    If you want it to stick to the surface alot better and a lot harder to scratch off get a small bowl put some acetone in it and using a 3x3
    red scotch bright dip in the acetone and use the scotch bright like sandpaper it will scratch the parts and not smooth them out then spray your color on the parts after getting the look your after take a hairdryer on medium heat and go back and forth over the whole area hold the hairdryer and 4" away from part go over the parts 3-4 time with heat it helps alot with fusing the color too your parts

      @@chalecharros7689 Hello Chale, If coating in a similar color like I did in this video, I only did two coats. If a totally different color, you will be looking at doing more than that. You only use Acetone before you paint. Acetone is very harsh and will wipe away your first coat, resulting in wasted time and money. Please keep liking and watching!

    I don’t know if you have seen the Toyota 86/ Subaru BRZ first generation interior but they don’t come in this color. I wanna spray it this color from originally black. Think it would look sick! Inspiration is a Porsche 987.2 Cayman tan interior. Notice the doors are like an alcantara light tan insert within a darker brown tan plastic door panel

    hands down the easiest video to follow. seeing the time frame for what you do on the poster in the background made me feel more at ease about "is this the best way to do it?"
    only one question.. would it be better to just replace the vinyl for longer lasting and more durability? like how that column seems like the vinyl was wrapped onto the plastic frame and secured.
    Would that be a better, although more expensive, way of re-doing the interior?
