He had depression issues and they impacted his career and health, just like Elvis, but in his case he came out on the other side thanks to therapy and support. It happens when he lectures the audience on Brian Wilson's harmonies, whilst sitting next to the man. The gesture reminds me of either a half-assed sign language attempt or an eerie precursor to that distressing video of Elisa Lam's last moments in an elevator. He also performs the same peculiar dolphin-wave in other interviews of that era. My speculation is that Mr. Love was under contract to perform said gesture, under scrutiny of lawyers (his handlers), or alternatively, and perhaps even more likely, he's just a dumbbell.
