    With the reduced manifold flow wouldn’t the air flow meter trim the injector values to suit and reduce exhaust smoke compared to the old mechanical beasts ??

    If I was the owner of the vehicle and bringing it in to you instead of the workshop that did the work originally because they have snubbed me off. The only option is to let you as the new workshop go with what you suggest from your findings. It cant be half fixed, look at the drama now. Saving a few dollars on a budget repair will cost more in the long term.

    Can't you run the injectors in a test bed and check for flow and pattern.
    I was on holiday in Adelaide and had a shop do my injectors because they imploded. I'm fairly sure they conned me with used injectors as they looked old on the top and they were all different shades(the plug). They also broke all the wiring and I found a lose bolt, still not sure where it goes. The worse bit was they didn't plug in all the vacuum lines which on a long drive will trip the ecu and traction lights because of an egr fault. That was interesting to diagnose. And they didn't include the price to clean the manifold, but the end it was not cheaper than the others.

    Often when you have a diesel engine blowing black exhaust smoke even after you have replaced the initial cause i.e injectors, you may find that the muffler is blocked with carbon. A good way to check is to weigh the muffler and compare against a new one.
    As you will understand, if the engine can not exhaust it will blow black smoke as if it has a blocked air filter.

    As an ex Auto Elect the first thing you do when a customer comes in with an odd problem (this case was you turned the ignition on and the parkers came on ). Have you done anything to the car ? Answer no..... This particular car was a VC commodore you could not turn off the accessories. My only choice after spending a couple of hours disconnecting all the plugs I could find accessible around the car, I was left with one choice..... Yep pull the dash , remove the wiring harness and strip it. If the customer had been honest it would have saved him a shit load of money. He had fitted a stereo and put a drill through the harness causing the short. As a tradie it's like pulling teeth to get info.

  • @peterstone172
    @peterstone172 3 роки тому

    I'd be looking at the turbocharger, making sure no boost leaks, producing good boost that could be your smoke issue. To see how important a correctly operating turbo is for smoke, see how much smoke it produces when it's disconnected!

  • @peterstone172
    @peterstone172 3 роки тому

    If it has good compression, then the smoke is from too rich an air fuel ratio, or (rarely) not atomising correctly as in very worn injectors. Too much fuel or not enough air. Personally, I'd just look straight at boost pressure, and make sure that is as expected. Without doing that, you are missing the air side of the equation. Even with brand new injectors, if there is a boost leak, or the turbo is not producing sufficient charge pressure, you are going to have smoke. Makes sure also that the injectors have the correct sized crush washer also so that the nozzle protrudes the correct distance into the combustion chamber. This can also be a cause of smoke when reseating injector wells.

    Before catch cans and recirculating oily crank case vapour, older diesel turbos vented to the atmosphere. So my question is: In those older motors there was no oily or dry vapours entering the intake, just clear air so how different was carbon buildup then, more or less?

    There's just no way if that intake manifold was cleaned, so that it can be that clogged up in 10 months.....Especially during COVID times, i doubt it's done alot of km's. Definitely needs a cleanout. Wrong spot for the EGR plate. Orange gasket goo. Wonder if it's losing intake air pressure? I guess that would probably cause an engine light to come on. Clearly a dodgy injector job was done. I'd be replacing all the injectors and putting new ones in. Looking forward to hearing the outcome.

    my 97 defender has 357.000 km on the clock still on the same head engine and box , always use injector cleaner not only to clean the injectors but ever where the fuel goes, the only time my defender stopped was when the alternator bearings seized as the engine needs voltage to the fuel pump, no computers no electronics , when small diesels with v8 torque there is a price to pay for all that power,

    • @ShainAndrews

      Injector "cleaner" does a better job of separating you from your money than it does separating contamination from the fuel system. I tear down and rebuild all manner of diesel injection systems. Can't tell a lick of difference... unless the cleaner causes damage and plenty of them do.
