Who are the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indians?

  • I spent three months in New Orleans to work on several photography projects, but among the million things I was attracted to were the Mardi Gras Indians. I took photos of them, but I thought a video would be more appropriate because it would provide the viewer with more than just still--the voices of such secular tradition are to be heard to be believed. The Mardi Gras Indian culture and the effort put behind keeping the masking tradition alive is beyond fascinating. The intricacies and secrecy of the uptown and downtown tribes with their different tribal dances and chants are nothing I have ever been exposed to before ( we don't have anything similar in Italy).
I am coming back to cover these black Indians again next year for sure!

You do know the Indigenous Americans are black rite? Called the American Aboriginals, your information is false and misleading. That's THEIR cultural attire that dates back more than 100 years, try 5 cause to this day we have Carnival which celebrates their Indigenous cultures.

The wild west and buffalo Bill has nothing to do with our indian tribe origination. This documentary should have done more research !! Stop taking credit for a culture you obviously know nothing about. Its started with the indigenous and indian people. As far back as the 17 hundred's....Wild Bill REALLY ?..Please stop insulting us !!!!

I don't believe that they are trying to be "Indians". This is a tradition merely reliving the Africans' perception of the Natives in their ceremonial attire. Tradition passed down from people of actual African and Native descent. Seeing as none of us was there, who is to say that this is not exactly how things were in this area during those times? It's called history. Don't be afraid to learn it.

I think it's about time for Non-Natives to stop telling us who we can and cannot accept into our families. It's called "self-determination." You should try honoring it sometime.

There is no black anything there's only indigenous and natives we were here long before Columbus why you think we are so many different shades it's just when they got here they labeled the word Indian to us and the ones that were like straight out of Columbus mouth onto his journals the ones that look like they were from Africa we're called Black you hear me when he first got here it was people dark as the people in Africa we were already here and we mingled with the people that came down from the north that's why we are so many different shades there is no black there is no Indian there is no Afro American you are either American or you are African and everyone forgets how they took us from this land to Africa and Spain and another thing the Moors ran Spain for 400 or 500 years so their bloodline has melon in it wake up people wake up

Seeing that the Africans and Natives lived amongst each other, accepted Africans to be apart of their tribes, married, and produced children together, I believe that gives the right to practice these ceremonies and reenact the traditions as they please seeing as though they are in fact their own.

Soooo, you mean to tell me that the folks at Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago are imitating "Native Americans"? Sorry, but I believe that this was tradition that was passed down because this was our culture. I have been reading more and more, and I have learned that so called black people were here Pre- Columbus. There is no coincidence with these costumes and our true history. Look at the Carnival in Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago. Come on man...our culture pre settlement. These folks are just blessed enough to know their heritage. Many "blacks" don't know...

I am Black. On one hand, I could say I am Black Seminole Indian; on the other, I choose to say I'm Black not knowing the degree of Seminole in my blood line. That is my choice/responsibility even tho the knowledge was not passed to me. Having said that, I do NOT find your video disrespectful - it was the opposite in how it was presented. As for the truth of it all, again, it is my responsibility to seek it. As for YoungRaWarrior, his comments represent him, one part of the vast whole. In peace

It is alot to take in. Escpeically with black slaves and indians in the mix. In the beginning of this nation we were more than likely one in the same even though indians had slaves even after the the law (correct me if I'm wrong). But the tribal nature of our families is something that connects us. I have all three in my family line. Irish, black and Cherokee. Can trace back my lenigous at least 4 generations. Would love to discuss this deeper. Keep your head up.

I cannot believe the ignorance being let loose here. These are indigenous practices of the creole and black tribes, and if we ever get to DNA, the stupid, the ignorant and the crazy people claiming to be Indians (a word pertaining to England for India Peoples) will find they are more European and Hispanic than Indigenous. The world is a 3rd World Tribe and for those who know there is no explanation necessary and for those who do not know there is no explanation possible until they do. You do not understand the the process because you were not educated to understand the process as a right of passage, a protection for the people, direction to the tribe and a place to unite the powers that link them.
