Reading isn't learning. Don't just skim through those books. Understand them, analise them. View the points of the author from different perspectives. Your bookshelf isn't your trophy cabinet. It's not about how may books you've read, it's about how deeply you understood those topics.
Yep. It's very unlikely that his synthesis of the information is high.
Ehhhhh, have you tried it? Because I’ve been reading 4 to 5 days books a week and a lot has changed. It’s not that hard to understand them if you are spending your whole day dissecting it while making income. It’s definitely possible :)
I agree 🙌
Read biographies slower, novels fast.
in short? youre learning..ok?

Great comment!!!
Dont go hard on yourself.. Grab a book and give it time.
Read 1 book a month. And absorb it
Its Enough..
Stay humble and open to new ideas.. Much love
Yes people should read a quality book once a month and apply its principles in life ,
i am also trying to read book i read 30 page in a month from the book names hobbit and i will continue it .
Reading a book a month is still a challenge for me. But trying my best to improve. Thanks to you all
@@user-ut1fi3mu9p u can do that.. keep going
There some books like Think and grow rich that U are recommended to read one Chapter everyday. Can't be read in one week
I have the following reasons to read book
1. it keeps me motivated and inspires me to work on my purpose.
2. I aim to be a life-long learner, reader, and achiever.
3. I love thinking and creating new ideas and philosophies of life.
4. I enjoy listening to others' ideas and ways of thinking and especially when there is something new to learn from them. reading a book is like communicating with the author, trying the understand the depth of the words, this is enjoyment.
so for me, reading books is like both enjoyment as well as learning.
Learning plays a important role here ,
I'm gonna take screenshot of your comment if you don't mind.. it's something to be remembered.

You dont need to read one book a day. Just read at your pase and enjoy it. Its not about reading much, its about enjoying and understanding.

You can read and enjoy novels at your own pace, but about informative ones he is right.
Hani Actually I only skipped to the naughty parts when I was a teenager. Lol
Yeah u r right
not really! he is infact wrong by a mile.. informative insightful books must be read well, acquire it's knowledge, write summaries etc.
I think changing "skiming" for "reading" suits better what he is showing up. Even for a "informative book". I think it's very hard for me, a non specialist in a subject, to select without prior reading what is and what is not important from a book judging by the title of the chapters and a previous interview with the author (who is the specialist, in the case)
One should rather subscribe to blinkist ot mentorbox instead!
The quantity of how much books you've read doesn't make change. Keep in mind that the ability to understand the message that book conveyed is what really matters. The majority of us is reading only to say about himself a reader, read with passion, read with desire, read with focus, read with big interest and finally read because you admire reading

Hi guys. I have a suggestion. Search the topic of your book in youtube and see the related videos. It's more interesting than reading the books. after being familiar with the topic, go to the book and only have a glance and you can see you do not need to understand the concept by yourself. That's enough to just see what's more in those pages.

Personally I like engaging with my books and treating it like a conversation. I write thoughts in the margins and underline key points and then write my own “personalized table of contents on a blank page in front of book”. That way I can open it up years later and reread and see what I’ve taken action on. Plus some of the best parts of the book are in the places and sections you would least expect or be interested in!
After reading books from last 4 year I never felt I should read a book in a single day by whatever method you are telling. If you read a book within a month then also fine because the purpose is to gain something at least one thing is enough from a book to apply in our life. But during these years of journey I realized one thing, every time when you re-read the same book you will gain something different from the previous reading because when you read last time we are in different situation, mood , mindset , etc. and when you read currently then again we are in different mindset, mood, etc. so if you read only one book throughout the year at least 6-8 times then see the wonders it will create. So my point is many people focus on reading more and more books but I think we should focus on quality of reading rather than quantity.
I did not agree with this guy, wanted to comment and scrolled down. And I am happy to see everyone has the exact thought as I am.

Gates said in an interview his policy is to finish the book if he starts to read it. His approach is more strict and he does deep learning. He analyses the book and checks with his existing set of knowledge and writes down the important pointers or high light em. That is real learning. However the so called smart reading isn’t bad as well if only done for specific info the reader want. I wouldn’t call it reading a book a day lol.

What I've learned in this video is that he wants us to be an effective reader. When it comes to reading a book, it is not just about how many books you can read but it is about being an effective reader that we could be. I had this confusion for the longer time that I should read much of book even though that book is not relevant anymore for me. The relevancy of the book should also be consider. It is what he mostly mentioned to his video that it is okay to choose topic that pique your interest, not just to oblige yourself to read it cover to cover; this is also I want to practice it. Mostly for some novice, they think that reading should be an obligation to be a reader but once you master the art of reading you will also think about the effectivity and how you can make the book serve you. Because we should make the book serves us, not to serve the book, so it doesn't matter if a certain book doesn't make you immerse to continue it. One thing that we should also consider is that reading should also equate to the status quo; in which part you want to have a piece of knowledge. He mentioned that first thing he do is that he let himself watch some video for him to contextualize the book. This is also to let you think if the book can help you with your current dilemma or to tap your intellectual curiosity. Being an effective reader is underrrated. With this evolving technology that most of us is curator and creator is few. We mostly think about the consumption of information and less in using it. To be effective we should also adhere with the application because it is not about knowing but it is about the action that we can make through reading.
Couldn't have said it better.
I always love having conversations with people that claim to read a lot of books in a short period of time. The conversation usually goes something like me having to tell them that I didn't read all of the books that they are claiming to have read, but then I ask them about the specifics of a book that we both have read and they cannot recall any of it. Reading is not the same as learning. Life is not a checklist to be gotten through. It is an experience to be learned from. It is one of the reasons I wish people would stop taking selfies in front of historical landmarks, or recording concerts that they are at. Just live in the moment people actually experience the things that you are there for, rather than endlessly chronicle your adventures so that you appear cool online and get a few likes/views/upvotes.
Our thinking match
Sometimes the author writes the whole book just to share one idea he once had with the readers. Why dive into details? Life is not worth knowing every little thought the author had when writing his book. I think the only thing needed is knowing why this book was written...

3.Read the introduction
4.Read first 3 lines and last 3 lines of a para to know if its worth reading

A)Whats a story here that motivates me
B)Whats a statistics here that blew my mind
C)Idea that you want to share

where do you start if youre not interested in anything
Hi
I was never much of a book reader growing up but thanks to motivators like you, my daughters and youtube we now have been given the opportunity to read and share kids books with the rest of the world! THANK YOU
Reading tips:
1. Check book summaries to decide whether you really want to read it or not.
2. In Index of a book highlight the part which interest you the most.
3. When reading a chapter firstly, skim read it to get an overview of it and decide whether you want to read it again for better understanding.
4. Read the first chapter because author has put so much energy into that.
5. Use finger while reading to speed up the process.
6. Focus on the strongest 5-6 words of a paragraph for faster reading.
7. After the end of each chapter write down this 3s:
• What did this chapter is conveying according to me?
• What to do I learn from this chapter?
• Which one of the stories in this chapter inspired me the most?
• Where & When I am gonna apply the principles which i learn from this chapter?
This feels like starting to prepare just the night before the exam.

One of the most iconic book behind you back "Steve Jobs." I read it cover to cover, it's a fantastic book.
I love it so much , it was the first book I read , the best book for anyone to recommend .
Love the "3S formula" for each time you finish a chapter - the story that inspired you, the statistic that blew your mind, and a note of something you want to share with someone else. I agree with your point about bringing energy and enthusiasm to a book, vs having the attitude of forcing ourselves through them. If you "have to" read a book for school, that's a joy killer if that's the attitude. If you "get to" read a book for a class because you think through why your professor thought that book would benefit you as a person, a citizen or in your future profession, then it puts a different spin on it.
I remember the summer I was 9 years old, staying with my grandparents. They only had children's classics (from when their children were young). What did I know about classics? All I knew at 9 was, "Oh, cool, this book has an elephant on the cover!" and "this book is about kids having adventures!" I read Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Jungle Book, Kim, Scarlet Letter, and a dozen more. Then, over the next few years in middle and high school, we would get to those books in the curriculum and I would be so excited at the chance to revisit a beloved friend, whereas all the other students groaned and moaned about "having to" read these wonderful books. It taught me such an important life lesson about the power of choice and attitude.
I just love reading self development books first thing in the morning everyday. I got few classy collections with me, so I take one book at a time to read one chapter a day,
Right now am reading "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie. Such a class this book as it has all the attributes to help one to develop a mindset to maintain good human relationships for life time.
8:50 - Three S formula - Story. Statistic. Share.
After finishing a chapter:
1. Write down a Story that inspired or moved me
2. A Statistic that surprised me
3. Make a note of something that you want to Share with someone else

Best wisdom
You need to read word by word only if you are reading a story book, to get the complete experience and the imagination of the writer. But social and personality development books are numerous in this world. As jai said it is necessary to concentrate on only the topics you need. Idk why there is a lot of hatred in the comment section. One thing i disagree with jay is he said we don't need practice which is wrong. to analyze the book and to highlight the important points, it is going to definitely take a long time may by 3 or four days. Once asked in a interview to bill gates, "what super power you wanna possess?" he said the ability to read fast. There are millions of books in the world and we need to accept the method jay uses to read them faster. And some people in the comment talk about ncert and other school books, which sounds stupid. You are given a whole year to do that and as a student, it's your responsibility to read em. He obviously talks about the books on life.

well, that's the right *Answer* I think! Thanks. :-)
I got your point 😊 We should skim through the main points of the book to understand what the book is about and if it is worth it to invest my time to read the whole book. It actually can help to get my ideas about a book before reading them so we can decide if we should read it or not, and if it is something I figure I need to read, then this time I am gonna read cover to cover which will add some real values in my life and there's more possibility of me using those Ideas to improve myself instead of halfheartedly finishing a book I don't like for the sake of finishing it. That’s my interpretation of this video and I think it only works for non-fiction. Thank You so much for putting the time and effort to make this video 😊💕 I'm gonna go watch some Tedtalks by some of the authors whose books were on my TBR list then read them
The book 'How to read a Book' has some very interesting points I think you would like. There are 4 stages of reading and you are primarily focused on just the second stage (skimming reviewing etc. within a limited period of time that you have set for yourself). This can be powerful but stages 3 (reading in an unlimited amount of time to get the most out of a book) and 4 (reading multiple books at the same time on a specific area to critically analyse what you are reading and create ideas for yourself) are mind-blowing and will help you remember much more...
What is stage 1?
Something that really motivated me to read books is read as teacher mind.
I mean read something like you have to teach that to someone. This mindset also made me reten much more knowledge. I also read each book two to three times.
Books are the best friends "they never demand, nor complain"
I really started to read books on a regular basis when i finished college to expand my mind.I am one of those who changed career (trying to) at 24 and now at 29 i have set a goal to read at least one book per month.I'm keen on biographies like the one of steve jobs you have on your backround(you ve become already a marketeer by reading this). These days im reading Phil Knight's autobiography.Keep up the good work!

Hey, if you want to read a book a day, not because you like reading but because you want to learn or whatever ( which is the only reason I see for speed reading ) then just read the bloody synopsis of the book.
From my perspective the only reason you'd want to read like this would be to show off and maybe have this conversation:

Like why? If you want to read you read. If you don't want to read you don't.

Books are meant for reading. So what is it that this guy did that was so amazing? Like you said he just skimmed through the books. He didn't read them. Lol this guys a tard...useless information...
The problem with this method of reading is that it allows people to skip any thoughts or ideas that don't conform with what you already think and what you want to hear.
Speed Reading works. It’s not skimming just because you don’t understand it. www.huffingtonpost.com/quora/does-speed-reading-really_b_5883264.html
As far as skipping through the book, you’re 100% correct. If you don’t read the whole book, can you really say you read the book? If I read just the title and headlines of an article, can I say I read the article? No.
His statement that "we praise ourselves for how much we accomplish rather than how much we learn” is SO true though...
Andrew Hall speed reading working or not working is opinion. Personally from my research on it awhile back it’s near pointless for your memory Retention drops dramatically. And patting yourself on the back for pointless accomplishments is how one becomes inflated. In ego that is. That just leads to interjecting your superiority on others to prove you are great or recalibration to what you truly and really are. And maybe that’s just a slow reader. And that’s ok... haha
Would be great if you make a video of your favourite books of all time or anything like that
If I buy the book I’m gonna read the book
Kuch bhi!!!
That's not reading. That's just flipping pages.
What's kuch bi???
@@fiveheinous9608 it means anything in Hindi
@@intekhabahmed9114 oo... Ok
I guess he has a practise of reading a *LOT* so he might understand while skimming through the book
Actually I don't know why every page's I read I forget ,please help me to avoid this situation.
@@iddyrumeme7037 maybe you have this problem because you don't really like the book you are reading and thus you are forgetting what you read because you think about something else while you read the book!!! I too had the same problem before...I used to read books which were famous but I later realised that I don't really like them and am not genuinely interested in reading them.
Book reading is a amazing habit. It helps you to self development and you get abundance of knoledge through books.
This is actually my approach to books on a shelf in a book store - it's how I decide if I want to buy it (without using a text marker, obviously). 😄 But if you managed to sensibly skim the Kahnemann book within two hours, then chapeau! Admittedly, I have the German version of it and reading German is a bit different from reading English.
If I don't read a book from first page to last page, I haven't actually read it.
Exactly
Haha so relatable 🤧
This makes me feel good and that I have been reading book correctly because I google and UA-cam books a lot before I read it!! Thanks for this 💕
The process of reading for me is enjoyable and a good way to learn the language (eng) as a non native speaker. So I prefer to read every single words of each book which allows me to make sure I get what it delivers
Thank you, Jay! I am a slow reader. Your practical ways of approaching on reading in this episode truly get me to change the way I read. Love your amazing works! Please keep uploading great contents!!
Guys stop hating. It's a good way to go through a lot of information quickly if that's what you want to or need to do. If you don't want to read a book a day, don't take his advice. His advice is pretty good to gain knowledge from multiple sources and fields in a short amount of time.
Thank You for the tips Jay they are much appreciated and I can't wait to put them into action.
Your perception is your reality.
Build your perception, then do what you got to do!
The comments gives me hope. I'm happy to see that people don't actually buy into the deceptive message of this video. Good books takes time to read and requires time to understand and reflect upon. I devote several hours a day for reading but I'm in no way reading a book a day.
What a shame to highlight sirtain parts of the book and only focus on that. An important part of learning is definitely reading the parts which is beyond your scope of interest, and it is exactly those parts of the book that will expand you world view and surprise you in new and colorful ways.
There is nothing extraordinary in what he does.
There is so much potential in harming yourself by believing you have to hurry through life and push yourself to comprehend valuable information as fast as possible.
Take your time and enjoy reading in your own pace.
Set a goal for how much you want to read daily, but be realistic and finish the damn book from start to end
I'm reading " Think like a monk " gifted by my best friend 💙 I'm heartfuly grateful for him and million thanks for you for the Masterpiece ...I'm thankful to
you for making my vision on life better , where i make concious choices + correct ones ...I found a solution for the problem 🙌
Soooo you didn’t read 365 books if you just flip through the pages or topics to find what you need, that’s my opinion 😐🤨
I'm currently living with my parents and I disturb them all day by telling what I read everyday . I think unknowingly it is a great way to remember what you read. And now I’m currently about 80% through "Playbook to Millions by Grant Cardone. I have read a lot of entrepreneurial books and self improvement books, and this book is my absolute favorite. This book is extraordinary and really gets you to work extremely hard toward your goals in life and succeed at multiple different areas like personal finance, business and career. This is an absolute must buy if you need a push to get you going in business or you want more out of life.
If your objective is to read a book, maybe you should uh, read the book. If your objective is to skim what you think is important to you, fine. But for someone like me who wants to read a book, I'll read the book, cover to cover. I don't understand the focus on speed. You don't have to go through every isle to get what you want, but do you know what you've missed from the other isle that you may have enjoyed. Titles on youtube are misleading sometime. How I read a book a day, or how this woman read 100 books in a month, when she did not. I get it, the title gets more hits according to how you phrase it. But I'm guilty of saying I watched this video. I did not, I skimmed a few sections, but I got the essence of it, maybe I didn't miss anything important.
Hi Jay. Thank you for your good vidoes. I wanna share my idea with you and every one is watching this video. I agree and disagree at the same time for different parts of your suggestion. Firstly, the methods which we want to suggest for reading, have to be different for different categories of the books. Imagine I use this method for a scientific book!!!! We lose lots of important things. So based on the book's field we can suggest different mathods. Secondly, I agree that generally reading only one book, 5 minutes a day, is not a good method because after a while we forget what we read and therefore we can not have a good conclusion and summary of the book in our mind. At least we have to read some pages or one chapter. And also I agree that it's not necessary to read the whole parts of some of the books. For example, if we want to learn how to solve an equation and there is a book about that, we can only find the solution and it's not necessary to read the other parts which are related to how this equation is used in NASA!
However, the number of the books are not so important, instead, the most important thing is getting new strategies for using in our life for having a better quality of life. Thats the reason I hate when others ask howmany books did you read!!! I would like the question, if it were: How much did you gain from the books you read. What were the results in your life. Did you think about what was the concept! and did you try to use them?
Overall, it's like a theory and no one can tell you that's completely true or fauls.
Good Luck
Too much to read.
Thanks so much for you shared useful tips
I love this and it makes a lot of sense for self help books. I've been on how be a bad ass for so long.
I highlight and make side notes on books that really inspire me at the time, and love re reading books and looking back at the notes and highlighted scriptures.
This is the best Jay brother !!!!

Gratitude ❣
Thank you so much Jay brother !
Keep inspiring !!!! ✌💯
i dont think its a good idea to read so many books in a year. makes no sense if you are not getting anything out of it instead of just flexing that you read that many books in a year. Maybe read just 12 books in a year and implement them in your life!

Why humans have so much negativity.
They watch to criticize but do not watch to gain something out of it.
Speaking out in front of the camera to the whole world is a strength on its own, anyone can be strong enough to write all these unnecessary comments hiding behind their phones.
So disgusted on people’s thoughts.
Jay Shetty, you are an amazing person🧡
Think like a monk is one of the best book I hv ever read ❤️
Thanks for sharing such useful tips. Really helpful. Thanks to you, I can now read 24 books in 24 hours.
Now I just look at his bookshelf and know that he hasn't read any of those books
Beatriz I knew a guy who displayed hardbound covers on his shelf, but there were no books inside. Empty shells!!
😄😄
He has read only some of them 🤣🤣
Bea lol
