  • You probably know that feeling: You make the perfect practice swing and when you're about to hit the golf ball, your actual golf swing is bad. Too much tension, too much speed, not enough rotation… In this video Tom explains you why this is and how you can fix it. Golf is a mental game!

    This lesson was as useful as telling a manic depressive to just cheer up

      Or telling a boxer to stop getting hit in the break between rounds. There was no actual teaching method of how to relax and repeat the practice swing. He mentioned grip pressure but that was about it.

    This is such simple and very good advice. I think a lot of mid to high handicappers struggle with their actual swing looking nothing like their practice swing because they don’t trust their practice swing can hit the ball far.
    When I’m in the groove and hitting the ball flush and far...the comment I most get from others is that I make it look so easy...because I am swinging easy. When I hit a really bad shot, the comment is more like...”you tried to kill that one.”

      This is just so hard to do. I try and think, swing easy, every time I get over the ball. Then I pull my back and fall over because I swung so hard. Every time lol

      This comment was very helpful. I think it’s also because in your practice swing you’re not really thinking about anything. In my regular swing I’m thinking about 17 things at once.

    "Just do the same practice swing again!" Easier said then done. My friends say my warm up swings look like Payne Stewart, and my real swing looks like Charles Barkley.

      I've seen guys who literally finish in perfect balance with the belt buckle facing the target and back foot off the ground with just the toe touching on 3 practice swings in a row, then proceed to keep the back foot planted and make a crude swipe when they swing at the ball. It's no doubt a mental thing more than physical but I think the physical tensing up under pressure has to have something to do with it. And practice swings don't help.

    Whoever _REALLY_ comes up with a functional method of solving this conundrum will make a bloody fortune! And, my endless search continues........

    Not for everyone but one thing that can help when getting ready to hit a shot is thinking about where you want the ball to land and what shape you need, or even to try to exaggerate a shot shape. Bubba Watson literally never tries to hit a stock, straight shot to the target. He's always trying to work the ball into the target in some way, either hitting fades or draws or high and low. It really takes your mind off the negatives when you're concentrating on the result and not than just trying to make a perfect swing. I'd bet most amateurs can remember some of their best shots in a round being recovery shots from trouble because you actually have to focus sharply on what you need to do to achieve your goal which removes all the negative thoughts.

    Thanks for this video. You’re actually the first person I’ve heard who actually understands what I think so many people, including myself, are having issues with. I’ve learned a ton about the swing over the last few years but the results aren’t what you’d expect because of the freak out I have when the ball is ready to be hit and all I’m thinking of is how badly I want to pure the shot. It’s gonna take another mindset and maybe even a silent mantra like you suggest for me to overcome this big problem.

    Last couple of games and the range sessions, one crazy thing worked for me. And that's just saying "Fred Couples" before I start my slow one piece takeaway. Seriously!! :-D
    It's the visualization of Couples' senior swing that helped me relax, I think.
    And disciplined pre-shot routine and practice swing helped a lot also in last couple of months.

    I never take a practice swing with any club. Been five years now, and improved my game...

      That is a personal choice of course. Good that it works for you without a practice swing!

    Hi, you described very well the problem but just telling ourself to be relax and there’s no ball obviously hasn’t work if we look at your video. Do you have a drill or a solution to help ?

      Ok playing in the practice range like a real game looks good to me . I just read your response.thanks

    • @Weplaygolf

      I would suggest you to go and warm up on the range with your friends and then see if you can organise a little challenge on your game.
      You can start with hitting wedges to a target, and put some stress on it... then you hit shots to another target but only 1 chance to go for the shot and again put yourself in a competition... building stress up as you practice will help you to get used to play under stress.
      I know a couple who do this all the time and they are very good with putting each other on competition modus...

    Useful advice. Another alternative is to make your practice swing tempo similar to your ball-striking tempo - à la Olazábal.

    I honestly expected more from this video. We all know why the actual shot does not duplicate the practice swing. And your only answer is to "relax"?

    • @Weplaygolf
      @Weplaygolf  3 роки тому

      Hi Jeff! Thank you for your question. Well, as a player and coach I can truly say that your performance will be far better if you’re able to stay relaxed during your 18 holes!
      Of course you need to have good technique and good ritmes for your shots. BUT if you’re performance gets stuck because you aren’t relax... you will have a big struggle to play good golf!

    as a beginner I stress because I know I only have "1 chance" of hitting the ball correctly. Do you have any recommondation to get rid of that stress? I know you say to trust the club you're using, but do you have any other tip?

    • @Weplaygolf
      @Weplaygolf  5 років тому +2

      Hi Dave!
      As a golfer you should have to know that it takes 100 good shots to build up your confidence... but it only takes 1 bad shot to loose all your confidence...
      So the lesson is ... you have never hit a bad shot that you can remember because you should forget your bad shots
      If your mechanics are good and you have practiced correctly you should have built up your confidence to perform under pressure... if you didn’t practise your shots with the same intention like you do on the course you are not ready to perform under pressure
      Building in a one shot routine in your practice... so you hit one driver then one 8 iron imaging you are on the course ...
      Play 18 holes like this on the range and note down your score
      Good luck!

    The moral of the story is to not take practice swings. Hitting a perfect practice swing actually puts more pressure on your shot as you now have to make two perfect swings in a row. You never, or very rarely see a pro stand next to his ball and take a practice swing, especially for a stock full swing shot. They might make the motions behind the ball while visualising the shot, but never one of those dumb looking practice swings right next to the ball.

    I usually take practice swings to get my grip-rite.The ball could be in a depression or above your feet or below your feet so I usually take one or two.

    Is it bad to not look at the ball while you swing? I find this is the easiest way to emulate my practice swing. I look about 6 inches above the ball when I hit.

    • @Weplaygolf
      @Weplaygolf  4 роки тому

      Hey Jeff,
      As there are blind people that learn to play the game, they don’t see the ball or the ground! They feel and trust gravity, therefore they know that they will hit down and get the ball.
      Some people look 1 inch before or after the ball. I think everyone needs to find out what makes him / her more relaxed.
      Hope this helps you and your game!

      @@Weplaygolf thanks for the reply. Though there is one caveat to my method I found out. When I do decide to look directly at the ball after a while looking above the ball, it's hard to make contact. I shank the heck out of it or even miss it completely. It's crazy, I haven't done that in about 6 years lol. I guess it sort of calibrates my brain to swing lower than my eyes or something. Cheers!
