This workout should average 15-20' faster than goal MP. So averaging 5:35 would indicate 5:50-5:55 MP. Or essentially a 2:33-2:35 marathon. Don't worry Eric you'll get there eventually, I dropped from 2:35 -> 2:23 in 9 months.
I tell myself that if I’m in 2:32 shape in August - when it gets colder in Oct you’ll be in 2:30 shape! I’m in the same boat as you - aiming for 2:30-32 at Chi, ran 2:34 last year but am doubting fitness right now lol
"It's so frustrating looking at old workouts. Seeing like, I did a three mile tempo and then mile repeats at like 5:19 in the spring, and I can't do eight by mile under 5:30 right now." AMEN!!! I have been struggling with this all summer down here in Virginia and it's disheartening. However, as summer comes to an end, I've been able to get into a few races where the morning temps have been hovering around 59-60, and my times have actually improved. The temps are retched during the summer, and they really screw with our workouts. But, I challenge people to look back at their history (in Strava for example) and see if the same trend was present previously. If the pattern's consistent, that answers the question. If not, further analysis may be warranted, but we can't give up on the goals. Your words from 7:50-8:30 are dead on accurate. Don't throw in the towel, just keep showing up. This was a great video Eric.
You’re the goat bro. Started running about a year and a half ago with hopes to run a sub 3 hour marathon this fall. Got up to about 60 mpw, and had a 13.6 mile tempo and ran it in 1:21. Got injured about a week later and have just now been slowly coming back. I was very intimated to make a come back and a bit discouraged due to the nature and severity of the injury but your videos always motivate me and remind me why I love this sport so much. Best of luck to you and keep inspiring.
It was cool to see your hidden gem time (5:32/mi) as I was watching this.. it’s a great reminder to not hang the world on every workout. You make great stuff amigo! Thank you!
If you look on vdot, equivalent 5k and 10k times for a 2:30 marathon are 15:38 and 32:27 respectively. Having doubts are normal and reaching a plateau is normal. It might be worth focussing on improving your times for the shorter distances if you don’t hit your goal this time. I hope you do 👍
Felt that @9:40! Love when you go from feeling down for a bit of time and then the vibes come back! I'm battling the summer heat and humidty here in North Carolina so I understand the setbacks with the weather. I'm just getting in the mindset of investing and putting in the work now and the benefits will show up in the fall. 18 miler last weekend as well at 80 degrees and 90% humidty. Can't wait for the ROI from that one!
Watching this as I sip my electrolytes and get ready for an early bed time before my 18 mile run with some race pace in it. I definitely related to the thoughts in the beginning of the video. Glad to know we’re all in the same boat with the summer miles. Keep up the content 🫡
Loved the real talk about focusing on improving yourself, and comparison being the thief of joy, awesomely motivating as always 😊But man, the things I would give to be ripping miles like you after over 12 weeks of being injured, great to see your back on track after being sick 😅😁
I'm currently training for the honolulu marathon with a new goal which requires a lot more volume than I'm used to. I'm really starting to feel the impact and it's taking a toll mentally and physically. Your videos are helping me hang in there. Mahalo!
I’m training for a marathon right now (Houston) and watching your videos has been inspiring. You keep using my brother’s music too (moony) which is so ironic to hear each time, like at 4:39. I keep sending him these videos when I hear his songs haha
“Get out there, do the work, compound the work, month after month, year after year, and be about it” well said sah Your growth the last few years definitely show the result of that quote
Extremely beneficial for you to share your psychological perspectives on where you think you are versus where you want to be or think you should be at this moment in your preparation. I am a new runner preparing for my first ever marathon, Hamptons Marathon in NY on September 28th. Was in Japan in July and August which is unbelievably hot and humid like Florida in the summer - and my training suffered a lot. Could not do the workouts I wanted to do, my HR was so elevated in the extreme humidity that I had to run so slow stay in zone 2 and I thought I lost so much fitness. Now back in NY and finally running in cooler, drier weather again; on Wednesday did a 6x800 track workout and hit the numbers down to the second, it was so encouraging. My confidence has been boosted to nail that workout. Keep running keep training, even when you're doubting it all. Thanks for the lesson today.
The way you ran and looked after the run on those hot and humid days, I have an extremely strong feeling that you are going to be more than alright come Oct 13th. Come on now. Got few more weeks to dial in but, I am firmly in ‘Eric will go 2:30 or less’ camp. Let’s go!!!!
Don't beat yourself up about past paces man! I've been doing the same thing all summer and now with cooler temps finally coming around and I'm entering my block, I've discovered my fitness is way better than I thought. Comparison is the thief of joy not just with others, but also yourself. Trust the process and keep being about it
The humidity was probably a major contributing factor. It has been a lot of ups and downs this summer with respects to humidity level. It has been harder to acclimate. You have to love our lakefront running path though and your early start saved you from the weaving around the thousands of us that are also training for Chicago.
This year, the Chicago humidity and heat started way earlier than last year! I feel like my individual runs were slower versus last even tho my fitness level increased.
Running Chicago this year as well! Shooting for sub 2:40 and in a similar headspace / physical fitness as you were at the beginning of this vid. Been trying to keep my head down and trust the process! Anywho, random Q: Any advice on how you’re gonna carry your nutrition during the marathon? My goal is 90g/hr with a salt tab every 45 or so
Have work in an hour, crushed a 4 mile Hilly tempo early morning and glad to watch this before work. From so far I see in this building block for you, you should he in 2:30-35 shape. Who know what happens but I know you you'll do amazing in Chicago, no matter the outcome. Got Santa Monica Classic 10k this Sunday and next week SURF City 10 miler. Wish me luck 🎉🎉🎉
@@flobergruns well, it is better than dog poop 💩😜. I’ll see you at the top and hopefully I’ll get to run with you once I’m faster! Give me about 4 more yrs of training
I didn’t. I tear it off and hold it between my thumb and the gel pouch. When I finish the gel, I fold it all up and put it all back in my side pocket. Thanks for watching!
Assuming you: Get a quality next couple weeks of training in Have your half split be no faster than 77 Have a minimum 8/10 weather day Feel 100% and fully tapered I would put you at 2:34:XX. Any one of those factors change, my prediction goes up significantly. Cheers!
A quick question Eric. I am just curious of what you would say is the optimal weather conditions for running? PS I enjoy watching your videos and your progres!
My son is in quite a good local band that is starting to get some traction , if I was your age and wanted to do the media thing . I could get access to a unique catalogue of music .. I often wonder if you were a producer or have a family member who is due to the outstanding background music you are often using. I am not fishing (honestly ) , I just have this on in the background while I am working and tend to just post musings on things I am watching 🙂 .. glad the post ended on a good note. 👊
It’s hard because when you’re trying to shave 5-7 minutes off a marathon, that’s only like 10-20 seconds a mile. The difference in running your 1 mile or even a 5 mile run at a pace that’s 10 second faster per mile doesn’t seem like much buts it’s MASSIVE in a marathon.
My boston was the slowest marathon I ran. Must be the heat. its crazy. Im going for another Bq in November.. I just cant get myself to run over 200 miles a month. Dont know how you do it.
I don't know if you are in 2:30 shape but are you capable? Absolutely! In my opinion and for what I see you have a lot of mental fortitude and you can endure the pain, I think if the training is there you can do it, that Boston time was nothing but impressive, I ran it and it was a brutal day for runners.
I loved my Garmin for years, but I truly love Coros' system with the heart rate monitor & the training hub online. So many good stats, and I've found the race predictor to be super accurate.
