I Cook TRADITIONAL Chinese Soup With Mom

  • Join Mama Lai and I as we cook Chinese soup! This version is green turnip carrot & chicken. In Chinese, it’s called 青蘿蔔 紅蘿蔔 雞. I grew up with these soups, and I always felt better after drinking it. It’s very soothing and comforting, especially if you’re not feeling well. These soups are especially popular amongst Toisanese people. Toisan is a Guang Zhou province in the Southern part of China. That’s where my Mom is from!

    👩🏻‍🍳RECIPE
    Ingredients:
    4 Chinese dates
    1 tbsp of bitter almonds
    1 tbsp of sweet almond
    8 chicken thighs
    2 turnips
    1 carrot (large)
    Instructions:
    1. Put the dates and almonds in a pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Once it boils, lower the temperature and cover. Simmer for at least 1 hour.
    2. Deskin chicken and wash. We use chicken thighs, though you can also use other parts of the chicken.
    3. Parboil the chicken. Put chicken ina pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Let it boil for a few minutes. Add the fat and impurities should rise to the surface.
    4. Bring the pot to the pink and dump out the water. Rinse the chicken to clean it.
    5. Add the chicken to the pot with the almonds and dates. Cover with water. Bring to a boil. Once it boils, cover and simmer on low for at least 2 hours.
    6. Cut two turnips and one carrot into one inch chunks.
    7. After the broth boils for at least two hours, add the turnips in. Add more water as needed to cover
    8. After 30 minutes, add the carrot.
    9. After another 30 minutes, season with salt to your liking. The soup is ready to eat!
