Pedro Valente represents Gracie Jiu-jitsu better than most members of the Gracie family. Excellent conversation.
Thank you
That’s true
Great discussion. You deliver greatness as always Chadi. It’s nice to hear a BJJ practitioner actually say that Judo and Jujutsu are the same. It’s also nice to hear that same person say that kata has its place. Also, nice to hear that person sound like he knows the history of the art and is not willing to engage in this my Kung fu is better than your Kung fu squabbling.
Thank you🙇🏻♂️
@@Chadi You are very welcome! It’s sad that a lot of BJJ schools forget the history and the full breadth of what Jujutsu is. Judo in some areas especially in the states are going down that path. Just only focusing on competition. You need all of the techniques from different scenarios and the good natured philosophy.
Valente is so insightful and well spoken
It was a great discussion
Schukran Ya Habib, you are a gift to the JUDO and JIU-JITSU community, keep on bringing good guests as Mr. Valente.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for the G. M. Hélio Gracie simply meaned Gracie Self-Defense System of Ju-Jutsu.
This is why they started saying that they are not Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the reality is, people get their BB in many schools without a clue of self-defese, many of those athletes that never learned self-defense become teachers claiming they teach a system that never learned.
One of my biggest frustrations with BJJ and Judo schools, so now, as a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu and Blue belt in Judo have to go through all basics that I've learned to remember and learn the whole Gracie Self-Defense system so, by the time I get my BB (in about 4 years), I will be a competent instructor.
Thank you Davi
I love this channel what great interviews
the greatest collab! it is so insightful to hear both points!
Thank you
Sharing this information is crucial for the preservation of effective self defense practices. Thank you for your professionalism and dedication. 🙏
Indeed
Mr. Valante holds bjj accountable to going back to judo's original art pre olympics.. to japanese jujutsu's combat mentality for modern times👍🏼
I learned it as Judo. Some learned it as JuJitsu. Others learned it as Karate or some other name. Judo used to be called Kano JuJitsu. Remember in the old black & white movie days when the "Judo Chop" was so popular? Another great Chadi video. Thanks, Sensei.
🙇🏻♂️
I'm old enough to have used the term "Judo chop", LOL! When I was in 2nd grade a half japanese girl who was a brown belt in Judo taught it to me. I remember all the other kids were scared of her though she was pretty darn cool and friendly.
Fantastic interview.
really good video Chadi and nice and balance.
Very good interview! Thank you for the suggestion;)
These clips are gold. 🥇
It was a great conversation
Great Discussion!!! Huge fan of both of you guys and I love that these topics are brought up. There’s definitely a huge misunderstanding within our art. Like you guys said there are many different ways to train the same art each with focusing on different aspects. Cant wait to hear more! 👊🏽🥋
Thank you very much
Great stuff.
Pedro Valente's statement that rather than seeing all the different styles of judo and jiu-jitsu as separate, that we should see them as being part of the same family is really a different approach that I think is very significant.
As someone once said to me, philosophically, we have far too many specialists in this world who only know one area. We need more skilled generalists who know a lot about a lot of things.
By adopting Pedro Valente's philosophy then we are more readily able to import and adapt moves, techniques and philosophies across different styles of judo and jiu-jitsu and adopt what works best and for specific applications and objectives (e.g sport vs self-defence).
Wow Great conversation. Pedro Valente ir very clear in his ideas and very insightful. Great video!
Thank you
The reason for Kata, is for the student to be able to execute the technique with full power and to make it instinctive.. where you do not think about it. It just happens.. a reflex. This is the idea of Mushin - no mind. The kata movements are broken down to study the mechanics of the movement - how to apply them, and what part of the body to attack. You learn the mechanics and practice them with your dojo partner at a moderate pace, then you speed it up and develop the flow through the sequence. Since you cannot execute these techniques with full force against your classmate for fear on injury, the kata is practiced with full force ensuring the completion of execution. This is what kata is to the Okinawans. The kata becomes a catalog of complete arsenal of the style.
BAM! Another great interview.
Thank you John
"...these are exṕressions of the same thing" I love it, Pedro Valente is a great thinker. Maybe it would be appropriate to simply speak of the martial art of "Ju", which encompasses all the different expressions.
That's why judo has randori + kata. Kano-shihan was very clear on the need of both types of training. He said even about kids beeing trained with rubber knives randori.
100%
Theres no need for kata in any art,in judo repetitive drilling does the same job far better, kata has no useful function other than to preserve tradition.
@@scarred10 The masters say otherwise. They all say that kata is the foundation. Kano-sensei compare it with the grammar study to be a good writer.
I think the problem is that you are only considering the sportive aspect of judo. And Judo primary goal is not to win fights or matchs. But even in sportive context, kata has its place according to the masters. How much I dont know.
judoinfo.com/judokata/
@@beskeptic those masters know nothing of how skills are acquired, that info wasn't available in their eras. When learning throw for example you need repetition v a static opponent, then moving, then resisting in that sequence over time, kata dont even fulfil the first stage because theres no repetition of an isolated skill. The vast majority of judoka do kata only for gradings. Kata use is to transfer tradition through generations, nothing more.
@@scarred10 incorrect. Judo repetitive drilling is kata. By the definition is kata. The drilling that you are referring to is more condensed without the extra ceremonial movement. Still kata nonetheless. Boxing has kata. That’s how important it is. It’s practicing movement that you will use in your given martial technique.
well pedro valente ,seems very straight and honest , i m impressed , i agree with him in many things , thanks Chadi to have shown this .
My pleasure, thank you for listening.
Important point about surprise attack. Look at the Bellator fighter who got into a fight and was KO’d with a piece of 2x4 and ended up in a coma as he also received a few kicks to the head (it’s on UA-cam)
Very cool! Congratulations.
Thank you
Excellent work 👍
Thank you
Its always a true pleasure to hear Master Pedro speak. VB!
I agree with pedro about training the kata stuff in a non-kata way.
But, I do recognize that the Valentes actively promote their version of history in a helio-centric way, and I think thats important to state.
They don’t promote. They simply state what they learned since they were the age of two and what they know.. So why wouldn’t they speak of what they know and the person who trained them?
As always, a very informative and valuable content from you. Would you consider posting training videos of yourself?
When I'll have access to the mats
Thus ist one of zur startest contributions toll thus Topic in the net. Kano refered to Judo not as the specific martial art or sport. Judo for him was the method and moral code. Kano himself wrote other sports can be called Judo if done by this moral code.
Smartest of course
Thank you Patrick
Too cool!
🤙🏻
i was disturbed by a comment the valente brothers made in their video about the dos santos incident. they were discussing the fact that carlos wanted dos santos to wear a suit and tie or a kimono, and claimed that this was customary and that even maeda requested that his opponents wear a kimono. is this valid?
If I'm not mistaken when i covered Miyake or Tani, one of them did the same thing, when he would take challengers his condition was the jacket. I believe Carlos was trying to do the same to gain advantage.
@@Chadi but the claim was about Maeda. i seem to remember seeing photos of Maeda at least posing shirtless with opponents, assuming that meant he also competed shirtless. (no question that carlos was trying to gain an advantage, the issue was whether carlos or rufino was being unreasonable. the valente brothers characterized carlos' request as fair because martial arts are for self defense and people wear clothing, and rufinos refusal as therefor unfair, but its not accurate that the average brazilian streetfighter walks around in a suit and tie or kimono. more realistic clothing would be a tank top or t shirt, if anything)
@@thomasfaught4162 T-shirt and and tank tops were not commonly worn in the 30’s. Most wore suits at that time.
@@jujutsu9 great point about the t shirts and tank tops, but not about the suit and tie. buttoned shirts may have been ubiquitous, but i seriously doubt that 1930s brazilian street urchins (remember we are discussing self defense and therefor referring to the type of people most likely to attack you on the street) were in full suits and ties, especially considering the climate
"jitsu" is simply technique..."do" is the spiritual way...to make the art a "higher" practice that involves more than fighting. The essentials are not much different..
Where do you train Judo?
France
@@Chadi Would you consider trying MMA?
@@Kentthegamerlam not that excited for it to be honest
@@Chadi I understand, Judo is a great self defence. By the way keep up the great work you have so much knowledge and I hope this channel has more views and reach 1million subs.
