In case anyone happens to care, I did my university dissertation on the relative discipline, skill etc of Celtic ("barbarian") and Roman troops and as far as I can tell there's plenty of evidence to suggest that "barbarian" troops weren't much less disciplined etc. One example is that Caesar often mentions Gauls using testudo. Also there are battles where Celts showed more discipline than the Romans they were facing. So yeah, the whole organised Romans vs disorganised hordes looks cool in films and stuff but is probably very much overstated, a result of all the sources being from the Roman point of view
I agree that it definitely depends on the tribe, but I don't know if there's much good evidence that the southern Celts were noticeably more disciplined than the Northern ones, even if they were more "civilised"(perhaps in Roman opinion.) We get things like the Britons using seemingly complex cavalry formations, even the Caledonian infantry are described fighting in formation. I think the main difference is that tribes in mountainous or forest regions often employed guerilla warfare while those without these natural defences tended to fight open battles (and usually get destroyed by the Romans who were the best at that.)
That's because Romans wrote everything down as were the picts didn't have a written language so most things on picts came from the point of view of the Romans
Gavin Franklin Indeed, and a lot of what Ceasar had written down was very subjective. He had to have a reason for his slow progress in modern day France against the Celts so he definitely lied about his war against them to keep Rome paying for his campaign.
Caesar also had a habit of pumping up the skill of the gaulic tribes/City states in his writing because he wanted to further his political career. It's better politically to defeat a highly skilled enemy than to slaughter a disorganized mass.

The Romans had a system set up where they would have defectors and traitors draw straws and whoever drew the shortest straw got beat to death by the other people. It was used very much due to the harshness though
I 100% agree with you guys. gamers have been developed. we want more complicated game play, like crusader kings II. europa universalis. and what we get is total war diplomacy. we are not ten years old, dev. we want more depth!

The conversation about TW strategy around the 18 minute mark really got me. I wish CA would take a leaf out of the Ultimate General series' book. I mean I love TW Warhammer, and I appreciate that they went for faster paced, crazier action gameplay with monsters and shit. It's cool. But I'm a strategy gamer at heart and mods like this prove that the slower, more (dare I say) 'realistic' commanding of an army really does have its place. I fear that since Sega took over, the TW series has been leaning towards less strategic gameplay to make it more accessible. It makes it more profitable for sure, but it couldn't hurt to indulge the old-school fanbase a little could it?
Let the next historical title be a true strategy game, rather than a micro-manage simulator. Or at the very least give the modders every leg up they can get. Do it for the community CA. You've got a lot of diehards in here.
Are Greek armies accurate in this mod? Hoplite overhead? Cleomenes reforms? Plans for short campigbs? I want to see miktiades from pontos and pyrrhus vs Rome also Syracuse and Carthage vs Rome

*Suddenly the other guy gives a long lethargic nationalistic chest pounding explaination. *The Roman just politely listens attentively nodding his head while making short brief glances at his teammate with an awkward expression on his face. *They both begin to back away slowly from the man they now regard as a nut.
(Kind of like how you slowly try to cautiously mask your movements and behavior from a crazy potentially dangerous vagabond without him realizing it so he won't be provoked into attacking you.)
The biggest issue I have with this mod is the morale. 90% the army just runs off? Like come on? They have strength of numbers and are ATTACKING which requires a certain resolve. Then thousands just turn and run at like... what? 20 casualties out of 200?
The map looks like Housesteads on the Wall, it's a pretty cool place if you ever get chance to visit. However, I do enjoy seeing these two guys having a proper dual commentary battle, the conversation is always fun.
Haven't seen it all yet but I also note that both videos are sufficiently different to watch both without losing anything in doing so.
Historical nitpick, though: it's "i-keni" for Iceni and "ga-llic" rather than "gaw-llic". Sorry, that's just what I do because I am annoying and on the internet. This does not detract in any way from the gameplay and the enjoyment of watching the fight. For those who know me, that ought to say something.

It was the celts they fought at Hadrians wall.
They fought the Picts at Antonine wall was for the picts. Mostly made of wood. It barely stands today haha
Wouldn't it be absolutely awesome if you had a HOI-like campaign map and battles like in Total War.
Just imagine a battle where you'd have to hold back a huge horde because your reinforcements will arrive in for days. But just when you thought that you finally made it it starts to rain and your reinforcements are stuck in the mud.

Apollo you can also do a multiplayer campaing with Jackie Fish in Ancient Empires mod . That would be cool
This is why I prefer fewer, higher quality troops over multiple lower quality units. You have fewer units you have to micromanage and also feel awesome when you destroy an army that outnumbers you significantly.
Defenders never win unless PA is attacking with no siege equip. Fun video boys keep it up. Jackie still waiting for episode 31. Lol and stop auto battling.
