  • People often talk about hitting the ball with your right side, but what does it actually mean and what benefits come from doing this? Dan covers a lot of great technical information in this video that can hopefully help you to improve your swing.

Fantastic Dan - this "hit with the right side" feel for me takes at least 5 individual swing thoughts for the downswing and combines into one. Game changing compression and consistency since adopting this ONE swing thought. THANK YOU!!!

Great video. For years I struggled with coaches telling me to "release the club" and create "extension" and when I would continue to hit blocks and snap hooks they would say that I was flipping the club instead of being "connected". We would play this game of back and forth where the definition of this elusive "release vs flip" led me to believe that both were exactly the same thing and results were dependent purely on your timing and how many balls you hit. Since I abandoned the concepts a long time ago and haven't looked back since. Passive wrist angles with soft arms as demonstrated in this video combined with working the right side through the shot is way easier!

As a left hander who learned to play golf right handed I've always had a dominant left side. This video was really helpful for getting my head around the 'feels' I need to more consistently engage my right side. It's already helping with my ball-flight and strike consistency. Great video Dan, thanks.

Good tip. I find that when my right lat/shoulder goes through, I can maintain the bent right elbow to impact otherwise it's a lash at the ball.

This is the key to good ball striking. You also want to drive your right knee towards the target to kind of get things going, then everything stays connected. Start by hitting chip shots this way. The right hand provides the power

This is exactly what I feel is the error in my swing Dan. I’ve suffered with early extension, high handle, right heal coming up high on down swing for years and although I ‘feel’ like I’ve tried to make changes, the truth is I’ve never achieved it. This concept looks great and is something I will try tomorrow. Speak soon about booking a lesson. Jason, Essex

I need to put it on my "to do" list to watch this video every month, all too often I fall into the trap of the sling shot swing and hope everything lines up at the ball which it frequently doesn't. Nothing beats the feeling of compressing the heck out of the ball with the right side !😊

3 hours later: Wow, thank you Mr. Whittaker! So, THAT's how I'm supposed to swing a golf club. Overall result after 140 balls was very good. Considering this was my first attempt at Dan Whittaker's right sided swing, I'd say excellent. Whittaker says it's more consistent and I'm a believer. My better ones were longer than my normal long with really nice ball height and shape and I was pleased to have so many. My misses were pushes and push fades, but when I finished better, they straightened out. My next ball striking opportunity will be actual play in 4 days. I like the drill and I'm going to do some shadow swings in the meantime.

This is something I really need to work on. Even if I take the club back perfectly, my body tends to "stall" as I get near impact and my arms take over and I flip the clubface closed and pull or hook the ball wildly to the left. I need to work on keeping my body rotating so I can better square the clubface up. Nice job, Dan.

  • @sjgraci

I’m finding that a good swing thought is to really complete my follow by continuing with my right side rotation. As long as I feel my bellybutton rotate away at the start of the backswing I can be fairly sure I get loaded into a good position to start the right side movement. I was dragging my left arm before, but now it’s just there for stability.

Excellent video In golf nobody gets it right all the time isn’t that the beauty of golf? Practice practice practice never makes perfect but it sure helps. The thing about coaching videos is in the understanding of what happens in the swing and how it’s described, too many show what not to do and basically we all know that ,that’s why we’re watching the videos in the first place.

The right side dominant swing could be dated back to Ben Hogan and Gary Player, followed by Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, extended by Trevor Immelmen, Ernie Els, Stewart Cink, Adam Scott, Padrag Harrington.
Now we could almost every active player of PGA/LPGA play in this way with just a few exceptions.
However, most of the internet on line coachs play in left dominant way. This phenomenon may be originated from the two milestone charaters, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, both play in left dominant way.
The question is most of them sometimes tried to analyse the swing of Rory McIlroy or Dustin Johnson, but unaware of the differences of swing philosophy between them.

Being a former baseball player this has always been a struggle for me. The baseball swing focuses on keeping the weight neutral or more towards back foot (not to mention the back foot pivots in a baseball swing). Still a work in progress for me but your theory makes perfect sense as demonstrated by 99% of PGA tour players. Keep up the good work Dan and I’ll keep practicing.

Hello Dan, this is close to what I have been looking for . I always have had a problem with not taking a divot and frequently hooked many shots as I approaching the ball under plane. Recently I was “diagnosed” to be a natural “overgolfer” meaning that I should approach the ball with the right palm facing down at the ball to compress the ball and also avoiding overdraws. The grip also needed a change with the right hand more on top of the shaft and my elbow bend pointing diagonally right and forwards in the setup. Hope to see something on your channel about this concept as I see to many instructions on UA-cam with a “standard” approach to take-away/backswing with the right elbow pointing in towards the chest, folding early etc. etc. I hope this make sense. Best Regards from Olle

Great video Dan exactly the sort of stuff I'm looking for. I'm trying hard to work this into my swing but as many other contributors have commented about their own attempts, I'm finding it difficult to stop my body 'early extending' which causes me to add loft, lose distance and be inconsistent. Shot 73 the other week and then 85 a week later. Subscribed to your modern rotational golf swing course and been working with the content over winter which has been helpful.

I tried this for years based on all the Ben Hogan related teaching videos and found that it was next to impossible to turn aggressively with the body but somehow not come over the top with the right shoulder turning forward. Seems to me you have to be very flexible to get away with an aggressive hip turn that leads the swing. The only way I ever achieved any consistent ball striking was to do nothing deliberate with the lower body and simply focus on keeping my head high and behind the ball from the middle of the back swing all the way down to the ball. But then again I have only marginal athletic talent.
