Bombo Quarry, NSW - May 2021

Bombo Point Quarry, just outside Kiama, was mined for "Blue Diamonds" aka basalt. By 1880 Kiama blue metal had become the principal provider of the colony’s needs, and hundreds of tons a week were being sent to Sydney in the little ships that became known as the ‘Stone Fleet’.
Bombo Point quarry has been preserved just as the quarry workers left it by a permanent conservation order, and demonstrates the moonscape nature of basalt rock mining.
