one thing you kinda missed... steam does a lot of promotion for games like DCS. When someone plays Ace Combat 7 or War Thunder, they'll occasionally get a "Other games you might like" notification in Steam, and DCS will be one of the games that pops up. This ultimately results in new users getting into the game who may not have even heard of DCS prior to that. So in effect, that money that Steam takes also goes to advertising, money that ED would have to spend anyway in ad campaigns.
Good point, yeah I missed that one indeed. Thanks for mentioning it
I doubt most companies pay 30% of all sales to unspecific marketing attention. You tube is dcs best marketing tool. always has been.
@@matthewjackson5325 I discovered DCS through Steam, not youtube, because I did not watch any related content on youtube before playing. And while I would agree that most companies aren't paying the 30% cut for unspecific marketing tactics, they are paying 30% cut for overall visibility.
I am not claiming to be the rule, however I would be interested in some data that could give insight on what that distribution of the player base looks like.
@@matthewjackson5325 being on steam instead of a standalone platform will MASSIVELY boost a games visibility. It's not even close to 30%.
@@darkstar0000000000 Well, I *WILL* claim it to be the rule. I wouldn't even know that DCS exists were it not for Steam showing it in my "other games you might like" pages. I haven't got DCS yet, but I look in on it every few weeks. I will probably get the Steam version when that time comes.
Hey! A couple Steam advantages vs standalone not mentioned in the video, mostly specific to Argentina and similar economic-challenged countries: cheaper prices for the same stuff, and far less trouble with credit cards and payments (Steam usually works with local payment methods that most people have, while standalone requires international payments which are quite restricted here).
Thanks for the info! Got to say I totally understand! Good to hear that dear Pedro. Take care!
@@hipgames Thanks! Also, great videos!! :)
This happens in turkey as well. i actualy have foreign currency but my bank account simply does not do online transactions with it.
E:("does not do" as in "does not allow or recognize")
Not in Europe. I am from Czech republic and prices on Steam are in Euros. It is different for me if the price is same in Eur and US Dollar (US Dollar is 5 - 10% cheaper for me). Last week I migrated to standalone and do fresh installation of DCS and got almost 30 FPS more. I don´t know if it is because of standalone version or clean installation (maybe over years there was some garbage or mods or whatever on my machine) but I am really happy about it 🙂
I was just discussing this with a fellow virtual pilot in the comments of a short. Great timing
Also can someone clarify for me if the viggen is transferrable from steam to standalone?
As mentioned below, another benefit of using steam is the worldwide availability of currencies. I live in Brazil and the USD here is quite expensive so even though we still pay the same amount of money but converted, we don't have to worry about fluctuating prices plus we get some national options for payment. This is actually the reason that I keep at steam xD
moving to standalone is a no brainer honestly
I have tried both, I find Standalone fit's me best. I run more than one install of it.
One is only for Muliti-player server's that req. a pure client.
One for all my mod's installed for single player or for server that don't require a pure client.
OvGME with one client. Just click to have mods on, click to turn them off.
I started on Steam and switched to stand alone. My only regret is that I wish I had done it earlier.
I've just started downloading the stand-alone version and deleted Steam version. I want to try out different planes for 14 days before I purchase my first plane - my reason for switching.
@@remy9240 You and your wallet won't regret it!
The automatic updates is what keeps me on Steam the most (that and I hear plenty about banks blocking payment via credit card or PayPal to EDs website) but man does it REALLY kill my mood when I get everything like my controllers, head tracking and all set up... go to launch DCS... and then... get smacked with an update that might take me a few hours to download...
If there is an update, are you forced to download it, and unable to play until you update?
@@AdamCasada Technically yes. The main thing is that if you don't have the right version, you won't be able to join any servers for multiplayer. Fortunately, Steam handles the updated automatically, so while you're at work for example, if an update drops, it'll be there waiting for you when you get home.
"Natasha! Go pack the files, we're moving to standalone" 😂
Your discount code helps a lot too. - cheers!
Thank you. Will there ever be a video about our Czech L-39 just for fun? :-)
Thank you for your Support! Maybe, we like fun stuff :) Petrovich agrees
F-15 preorder or not, I will stick to Steam :))
Why? I'm not trying to be slick or provoke you. I'm genuinely interested to know why people choose steam over standalone.
You don't own your game with Steam. It's all find and dandy until you have a problem with them you realize you have absolutely no leverage because all your games are on Steam. Believe me, I went through this.
Avoid Steam any time you can.
@@zi0 I simply try to have everything there, it's slick and convenient, auto-updates, friends are there for the most part (and Discord nowadays), and download speeds always make use of my full available bandwidth. One folder contains all the bulky game installs, screenshots go there and are always on F12.... dunno, lots of small things honestly.
@@borkug1566 IANAL, but for all I know you never own games / software anyway, but you get a license for them, which makes your use of the game media (physical or download) legal or not - something like that. DRM and all that is optional and depends on the publisher /rights holder, so there are DRM-free games on Steam as well (not sure about DCS, neither on Steam nor on standalone). Sure Valve / Steam could go down at some point, but the same is true of ED, who (unlike Valve) are not exactly "too big to fail". And for the ssme reason I actually prefer "buying" movies on Prime over "renting" on Netflix, because these purchases will remain accessible in 95% of the cases even after they are not offered anymore for some (typically legal) reason.
"Most ED and third party modules are available for this trial program"
*shows Mirage F1 which is not available for trial*
I have almost 50 Steam games and I'm glad I don't need it for DCS.
l0l, I have over 400+ steam games.
@@shaneduc I would need another life if I had 400+ games, I barely have time for DCS
If you have an unreliable internet connection, Steam's offline mode works much better.
DCS stand alone you need to set it too offline before you have no connection.
I couldn't play offline on the steam version
@@fightthelies4349As long as you've booted up the game recently (I don't know what time limits are in place on this) you should receive a message:
Failed to get authorization data. Error code is:
403
Using saved authorization.
And the game will boot up. I tested it just now.
Super vidéo 👍 Thanks Andrei
I see download speed of standalone around 100mb/s, so this is no issue for me.
I'll echo this one - dcs is the first time I've ever maxed out my gigabit fiber connection
7:30 Swiss Fighters !!
I am definitely sold on the 14-6 try b4 U buy policy. 50% off first purchase gets me in the door with an F18C, because 80 bucks for pay 2 play is really steep for a noob like me.
ED truly cares about its community.
Personally, I use stand-alone.
I was going to preorder Razbam F15 until I found it it was pointless on Steam version....I don't mind paying full price I guess since I know it'll be a quality module 🤷🏻♂️
I think (IMHO) for this amazing products we should support developers, just buy modules(50-60$ for a dream is nothing :) Imagine how dull would be the combat sim world without DCS and 3rd parties!
I believe although, steam downloads DCS updates for me much quicker, that is alright, and I will stick to standalone, because the perks outweigh the bad for me.
I prefer stand alone so I can put it all on 1tb hard drive and steam on another hard drive. 😊
The irony is that these major advantages of "moving to standalone for F-15" - trials, ED miles - are actually not available for F-15. The only valid argument left is that 10% for pre-order which was deliberately, as a last minute change, not pushed to steam. So it's not about what's exclusively available on standalone but rather what has been made missing on Steam. I'm still fine with Steam, I'll just stay out of RAZBAM products from now on - I believe that "support them" argument should work both ways.
I find the try before I buy one of the best advantages for me.
They are giving you on Steam a 20% discount, there's your support. Now tell me again how you think support goes both ways because it looks to me like a one way street in your mind. So you will act like a baby throwing a tantum over 8.00 bucks because you think they should lose more money just for you.
Got it check lol
@@billpii6314, both ways - I'm buying all their modules as early as I can (which I did), and they are releasing them on Steam. You got it wrong, I don't think they should do anything but I also don't think I should move to another store/platform because someone will be short of "8 bucks". And - you should stop thinking like a kid - it's not about money, it's not tantrum - it's "voting with your pocket" thing.
@@billpii6314 $8 bucks can be the difference in someone buying a mod or not.
For me I'm a disable Vet living on disable. I have to save up for a mod.
So yeah 8 bucks is a lot. I have uet to buy a mod at full price and will not. Or I'll wait till it is on sale.
Getting to trial free planes for 14 days is pretty important to me, especially when I'm so indecisive about which plane I want to buy. Steam doesn't let you do that.
You forgot one important thing about steam version, refunds. I got my money back after buying the gazelle and the mig19.
1:00 - DCS:W is "RAM" heavy. When you can turn of steam client and save some memory for DCS:W, do it.
Can someone just say here on the spot What is best? Standalone or steam edition
Both have benefits! I cannot urge you to choose one over the other... go from what works for you. But seeing things from my experience, standalone has that trial system and miles, it helps
Hello Mr. Tuuvas. I only just discovered the DCS world yesterday. I’m still not sure what it is. I am 71 Caucasoid yank and this game world whatever it is Zeitgeist is the coolest shit I have seen from ‘the future’ so far ha ha.
I was born in 1952 and WWII and then WWI fighter planes, etc., were it for me. Then came The Beatles and drums and gtr.
Your show is really good. This world has some of the best production and acting, etc. It’s also usually really funny because fighter pilots are Rock’n’Roll.
I will never be able to play it. I can’t even play the little iOS games without dying in flames almost immediately. I can’t even divide anymore. What is the best and most fun way to just be a voyeur?
What is the best way to support the show creators etc.?
Cheers.
Hello there! Glad you like the show and welcome to the World of Milsim Aviation and the phenomenon of DCS. I know it can look very complicated 😅 But if you got some time to spare, you can always try it out. As for how to support the channel? If that is your question, we got a Patron page for monthly support, a paypal link and you can also join us on discord and meet the team.
Thank you. Will do. Watch your six.
I have found that there are a few campaigns that I really want to play are not available on steam
Sometimes there are promo codes given to those who produce community content for use on Standalone.
How do u download dcs on standalone …. Do u need a pc?
Are you able to add mods to the steam bcs? Eg: the Bronco or the Hugh’s 500?
Yes, same way you add them to the standalone version.
I'd love to convert from Steam to ED, but I'd lose so much....If they had a way to convert, I'd gladly do it. I tried to sync my accounts and transfer my Steam purchases to ED (a long time ago), but it didn't work and I have no idea how to fix it.
try again, it works fine.
@@ligmasack9038 You know what? It did work! 🙂
@@rogue109 glad to hear it Bud!
I'm so fan of petrovich and NATASHA!!! 🤣🤣🤣
U forget one point, the cockpit builders. We need a chance to edit the dcs lua files, for resolution, export the mfds, also we need dcs bios for potis, switches, rotarys. No chance with steam. The stream bullshit ist for desk pilotes with throttle and stick
So today, even modules newer than Mirage 2000C can be purchased on steam and linked to standalone? Up to now I was under the impression modules with the new authenticator(F18, F14, F16, etc) couldn't be linked from steam to standalone
No i was switched to standalone a few months ago and it worked just fine with my hornet, tomcat, and harrier.
@@CrazyGaming_DCS nice
I only fly in DCS, I don't play any games or any other sims, so for that reason I'm on standalone.
Can’t even get stand-alone to download keep getting errors think internet breaks the connection steam no problems downloading frustrating as would love to free trial aircraft
Standalone the best Andrei, the best.#Seinfeld
Valeu!
Thank you once again dear Andre!
The Strike Eagle was a bit of a slap to all of us Steam users.
What is the story about that? I keep hearing reference to it but haven't found out what actually happened
Usually on Steam the prices are lower.
50% off the first purchase is going to be discontinued apparently...
Yeah but other things will come for those who purchase
@@hipgames Do you know what ?
i play on steam
Standalone for the game, Steam for the discounts.
Stand alone...Svetlana likes it...she dont share me!
Steam tax 30% ... Don't you think it is too much? I think there is also ED tax for 3rd party devs.
I only give my money to ED & Friends.
No one gets between us. Go make me a sandwich, Steam.
Play standalone, buy on steam. Don't like a module you enjoyed during trail? No worry you get full refund on steam.
ill never use steam for DCS
Valve has become rotten just like the many other video games companies. Don't use Steam. Just buy from the developer whenever you can.
