Luluc: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- I've spent more time listening to Luluc's second album, Passerby, than any other album this year. It's a calming, seemingly effortless affair: a marriage of graceful singing and storytelling, with guitars and textures that help create an unforgettable aura. The voice and acoustic guitar belong to Zoë Randell, while bandmate Steve Hassett contributes all the remaining sounds. Both are Australian, though these days they split their time between Melbourne and Brooklyn. I might have missed this album - as I did its 2008 predecessor - had it not been for Joe Boyd, a brilliant record producer since the 1960s and the person who brought the world Nick Drake. In 2012, Boyd asked Luluc to perform on a Nick Drake tribute tour, which makes sense: This music is true to the late singer's spirit, and then some. --BOB BOILEN

Luluc is amazing. I listen to them during my lunch break to ease a stressful day of teaching. Helps me remember I am living human being.
wonderful...
Exquisite, delicate, yet deep as ocean water. Thank you for sharing this lovely performance.
every time i listen to this im even more fascinated by her voice. and these guitars are beautiful!
Astonishing, the intensity of the performance and the joyful when every song ends. Is like if there are two Zoës =D
Love it! She has a calming mellow relaxed beauty to her, but at the same a certain amount of experience that denotes strength and grace. Hes enchanting- a tall handsome figure ever present in the background weaving the musical performance into one cohesive united piece. Amazing!
Sam T. Love your description of these two.
There are moments where her enunciation reminds me of Nico and that is pretty damn cool. Lovely.
My goodness, the audio is so beautifully recorded. Wonderful performance.
Lovely. Invite them back ❤️
EXCELLENT. 1 video and I'm now a HUGE fan. This duo knows how to preform with each other.
Beautiful and Cosmic
Great guitars...great voices....great songs....
Outta sight. Great harmonies.
1:55 ...loved it! such a sutil change.
Go Aussies.
loved her in "The Office"
I saw them with my brother on my birthday (Oct 11th, 2014) in Chicago at a place that isnt even there anymore. They opened for J Mascis.
I chased J and Steve down on the streets before the show and begged J to sign my FM guitar pedal. J was gracious and did so, and Steve was also gracious and cool. I got to briefly speak with Zoe and Steve after they made a great performance. Very nice people and they make lovely music. One of my fondest memories.
Did it get burned down peacfully during the summer of the monkey 4 years ago?
I declare myself a fan from now on... :)
Beautiful music! I'm so glad they're from Melbourne and I can see them soon!
Gorgeous! Thank you! :)

Excuse me...... How dare this band be so bloody unbelievable. And they are from Melbourne!
So humble, yet so great, lovely harmonies, nice guitars. Why so short? I wanted to hear more...

very nice ...
Should be as well known as Civil Wars, harmony terrific
Really nice melodies, voices. one of the better groups on npr
Really enjoyed this performance, very relaxing..
Plus he has an awesome beard..
Anyone else noticed their live performances (maybe because they are more recent?) seem much more compelling than those on Passerby? I "liked" Passerby but the level of harmony and slight improvisation and feeling in this performance (and to a lesser extent the KEXP Full Performance, particularly of 'Reverie on Norfolk Street' are just at another level for me. I so, so now want to see them live.
It's really hard to evoke the right emotion in a studio setting. There's so many factors.
Intoxicating. Please invite them back for a few tracks from Sculptor.
aaa favourite ♡♡
Is she kind of like Georgia Hubley, but much sweeter? I haven't been that amazed by voice in a while. Really want to see them live!!!
Does anyone know what brand of guitar Zoe is playing? I've looked elsewhere and someone said it was a 1900s Washburn but it looks to me to be quite a bit older than that, maybe even a Romantic era guitar similar to a Lacote. Am I wrong?
Anyone know what guitar that is he's playing on the first song?
translateslowly I'm a Lebowski... you're a Lebowski... I have no idea what guitar it is but I couldn't help saluting anyone with that profile pic. ^_^
Nathalie Ramirez Why thank ye there. I salute you right back
+translateslowly Arnold Hoyer Herr im Frack.
A Sneebly mk 3
Does anyone know that make of the black guitar?
What guitar is he using?
See above Arnold Hoyer arch-top
Anybody knows what brand the electric/acoustic guitar is?
I'm wondering the same. I can't read the name on the headstock.
Christopher Melton It's a Arnold Hoyer Guitar
LifeSon777 It's a Arnold Hoyer Guitar
Thanks mate!
like
that black acoustic sounds great. the song's kinda boring though, in a joan baez sorta way.
The black guitar is actually an electric - you can see the cable and theirs a volume knob. It does sound great. Have any idea what make it is? I can't read what's on the headstock. I'd love to have one. Or play one at least.
Yes, that's correct. There is actually a seller on eBay who sells old Arnold Hoyer archtops. He has quite a few right now, including a nice clean Herr im Frack. Search the sellers for
"arnemeteor"
You're boring mate....
