I admire your commitment to recognizing the flaws in your content and improving them. This is such a hard topic to articulate, and I feel you will get better each time you do it. You are one of the first people to really emphasize that the lack of a buffer as part of what makes Melee special. I would like to see a video going deeper into that.
ultimate is fun and all but it just rewards campy walling meta. It feels like a game with a million neutral interactions, and the punishes are almost nonexistent. Melee feels like a sweet aromatic balance of neutral, punish, execution, and movement. I quit melee in 2018 and just recently started playing again and I'm honestly surprised it's still going so strong (God bless Fizzi) The community is insane I love it
This is the best video I've seen explaining the movement mechanics, including the names and necessary inputs, so that a casual fan can have a grasp of what is happening. Nice work!
today was my first dsy of college, I brought a CRT and played some melee in the student life room, as expected the faculty tried to kick us out but we made it clear that we're not leaving
I used to main Ultimate, having started playing Smash in Brawl and moving to Smash 4 like most Brawl players did, and then moving to Ult like most Smash 4 players did. After a while though, I switched to Melee. While I do like Ultimate, the level of creativity that Melee and P+ allow is unmatched. I'm someone who enjoys playing difficult or complex characters that have a lot of options (I mean, I main Peach in Ultimate). The thing about Melee, though, is that every character has that kind of depth in that game. I still enjoy titles like Ult and Brawl, but Melee is just so much more fun once you get used to it.
if you play both you can appreciate them both. the sheer amount of matchups in ultimate makes optimal gameplay so varied, that its a totally different game almost and you have to adapt to the matchup so much and not only the playstyle of the other player. I like how ultimate can feel insanely fast like melee and then sometimes play super slow. Of course there are some lame ass characters though. it makes the mental component of the game tough. In melee though i love the schmovement. You can be very physical with the game
God for such a small channel your melee content is amazing. I would love to see you make more videos on the game, because you are an excellent writer and storyteller. Keep it up!
@@intrastella5555 No problem! I hope you get big! (I may or may not have replayed this at 0.25 speed and shared it to all my friends to promote this in the algorithm.)
I've tried explaining Melee to friends who wanted me to play Ultimate because I'm "the smash bros" friend (Melee/P+ but really got into it with PM). I think this does a great job, but at the same time it's like... I'll still play Ult if it's the only option at a party/get-together but they know that I'm not having fun. I'm going to sound like a huge dick here, but I think the main issue is that the people I've tried to explain *why* I like Melee better to just don't have passion for really anything (at least when it comes to gaming). They pick up the latest releases and never really dig into them to figure out how they tick and they're hella anti-social -- the idea of getting up to drive 3+ hours to a "local" just doesn't compute with them. It's a bold effort to try to explain passion to others, but I will also say that at some point you've just got to find better friends that will be excited with you and maybe even join you. Ult sucks :P great vid!
If Ultimate allowed buffer to be disabled, everyone could have a decent time Sure there'd still be 3 frame jump squats, inability to tech at higher percents & no shield drops etc etc but the buffer system makes the adjustment extra jarring
It is astonishing how many people in this word have no actual interests. Oh you like to go to the bar with your friends but also sometimes watch Netflix at home? My god please care about something
As someone who plays both, trying to switch from a defensive Robin in ultimate to an aggressive Roy in melee felt insanely weird, especially on a keyboard. However, both games are insanely fun to play, and I urge players to try both. Amazing video!
Melee is the perfect example of how something with seemingly simple rules and characteristics can become more complex the more these rules and characteristics are used in specific contexts and pushed to its absolute limits. Creating these "meta" rules and characteristics that only people in the know and with the right skills to push the original rules to a point nobody imagined it could be at the start. A simple new discovery chaging the whole meta rules. And these things are not very common in videogames, especially one that doesn't get updates constantly like an mmo or a moba or most recent videogames really, except for maybe the souls games and others
rly great vid!! despite it only being played ina competitive format i wld argue against melees appeal being solely competitive rn. it definitely was in the years from brawl up to slippi, but slippi unranked has reopened the door for casual, no stakes, fun focused play. i think part of the recent uptick in low n midtier successes competitively is the ability to hop on slippi n lose to better characters n players over n over for hours while only having fun n improvement to show for it. in a time where it seems like almost every new or relevant game has tangible stakes like skill rating n ranks n progression outside the actual game, melee offers that with an unmeasurably high skill ceiling n limitless depth, but also a break from that where u can play however u want n nothings on the line except ur own enjoyment in the moment which imo is what casual gaming rly is
where modern games obsess over How You Should Play melee gives u the choice, bc its such a rich competitive game most ppl gravitate to that part, bt that doesnt ever remove the option of having a late night unranked random ditto session or deciding to pick up kirby for a week just to see what happens. u can play fox at ur competitive best for an hour then pick gnw fish for 9s n get 4-0d for another hour n nothing but how much fun ur having will change, allowing ppl to play in whichever way they enjoy most without trying to control them
yeah when i say solely competitive i dont mean everyone needs to compete at the competitive level i moreso mean that the competitive scene is the sole interest (no items, standardized stage list) of the people that are still playing.
Great video. Ult player but Melee enjoyer here. I don't play Melee, cause mainly having to learn the tech skill is putting me off, but it's just way too good to not watch it when played at the highest level
But what if you combine the cool stuff of ultimate and melee (and a drop of rivals) you get HDR, sadly not as accessible as other mods like PM for brawl but once we get a failproof switch modding process HDR will be goated
I prefer 4XM on the Wii U The design philosophy feels more inline with Melee as characters aren't given floats + rests + jump cancel moves (PM is still cool though!!)
Ultimate's buffered short hop aerial macro is the one of worst implementations I've seen for a really well-intended mechanic Butchered full hop aerials for no reason😫 I'll never forgive them for removing shield drops too!!
@@Dracula_sb Yeah that was interesting change but it has some weird inconsistencies at times Being able to run through the opponent felt more liberating movement-wise though
Nice video, though when you're describing the input sequences needed for Shuffling & wavedashing, an on-screen input display would have made them hit home a little better. A visual representation
As someone who ours tons of time into both games this is real. Ult DEFINITELY has solid moments and some awesome stuff and feels a lot more "thought intensive" whereas melee has a crazy high technical ceiling and feels a lot more "somewhat memorize what to do in what situation" type feeling. because of the faster gameplay it feels more like knowing the right or wrong answer in a situation, whereas ult feels more like you can interact more with your environment (more grabbanle projectiles, way more off stage, Steve shit, etc) but is also a good bit slower, making it more thought reliant. I love both so much. Melee is a so timeless it's insane and ultimate is brawl done more correctly as it leanrs more into casual play but not so hard like brawl does so ultimate can be played at a much higher level as well. Great vid
Honestly it comes down to this. Ult is boring to watch as a competitive game because it wasn't designed to be one. However It's one of the best party games every made. Melee is a clunky wack party game. But it is one of the best competitive games ever made, and for both spectators and players as well.
I think l canceling is the only element of melee i actively dislike, i wish you explined your personal appeal because i just don't get it. It isn't an option for me to do more sick stuff, it's a restriction that feels arbitrary to boot.
