This is great! Makes me think how exited someone was so long ago when this was the latest and greatest way to split. Probably had all their friends over to see it. Now we have 30+ Ton splitters with 4 way wedges available at every big box store. Its too easy to take such things for granted.
That is exactly what I was looking to see, a H&M actually doing work. What a classic beautiful piece of machinery. That one piece was really bent and twisted, engine kept going strong. Too bad the belts are so long on those machines, probably looses a lot of power in belt stretch. But what a gorgeous piece of Americana.
@Wranglerstar-- I love it when he says "Cody -- you need this, not those axes" and then the machine stalls on the knotty pine chunk. Still, awesome machine and amazing to watch.
Years back there was a guy that brought one very similar (heck, may have been that one) to the WNYGSEA show in Alexander NY. Very smooth running and obviously effective.
Better not to. The engine would stall. Having the belt drive lets the splitter slip on a knotted piece so that the engine can keep rolling along, just knock the offending piece out and keep going. Though he might have been able to set the belt a little tighter, depends on how close the engine was to full load when the splitter stalled.
I remember seeing one of these log splitters in an old lady's yard in Columbia, SC when I was a kid. I thought I'd never see another one. I think she said they ran theirs with the tractor PTO.
yeah that thing is pretty handy, imagine if he had a stouter motor on that thing he could split wood on both sides at once that would keep things going pretty well, you'd bust through a rik of wood in no time
effortless long as you dont get one that is actually hard wood which is 80% of the wood out there lolol still good tho for its antique value and it did do good on the softer not notty wood
This is freaking amazing! I'm glad that there are people out there that put in so much effort to keep history alive.

That's a cool piece of machinery. I always like seeing them in action. Just can't get tired and leave a couple fingers on top of the log.
I need this. I don't just want it, i NEED IT!
Exactly, I see comments about the dangers of it. But IMO it looks pretty safe, keep your hands on the sides of the log and it's basically harmless.

That's actually pretty damn cool. I'd rather use that design over the current one's. A little more dangerous, but easier on the back.
Great job, glad to see the antique stuff still workin
@biggdaddy2001 Those belts are made of leather!! It's designed to slip when the machine gets jambed so it doesn't damage the engine!!☺
There should be a big flywheel on the machine, not just on the engine. That would cure the stalling issue.
I think belt tensioner would help more. Because flywheel would make it harder for the engine to spin it.
Very cool. Not a Harbor Freight model. Sandwich.....love it.

Some slight adjustments could make it a very effective splitter.
Thats a lot safer than some of the home made splitters ive seen on the tube here..... the belt slipping is actually a good safety feature I think.
@200mmonster Thanks for checkin' it out Bud!! If I had that machine, I would throw my axe out!!☺
@mrwiggles2 That's a pretty unique machine, that's the only one i've ever seen!! That one log was a knotty mess!!☺

its cool to see one of the old engines hooked up to something :)
big thumbs up from 500
I've never seen one like this.
Thanks for sharing
fanatastic equipment glad to see it workin and not sitting still
@larrythelookout That's some real old time American ingenuity there eh Mate!!☺
@daddytech Yeah Buddy!! I wonder how big the original powerplant was!!☺
Pretty cool eh!!☺
Very nice! I've got to build something like this since I doubt I'd ever find one for sale.
Better not to. The engine would stall.

@Goregoon Good catch Gore!! I guess as long as your fingers aren't on top you'll be OK eh!!☺
@DannysCam yeah Buddy!! Sweet Gum is some tough shit!! Even that machine would have a tough time with it!!☺
RK ....
You have some gems hidden away .... :)
Seeing that splitter in action reminded me rather strongly of a trip hammer.
yeah I could have used one myself 20 years ago, I was splitting wood for a living!!☺
I remember seeing one of these log splitters in an old lady's yard in Columbia, SC when I was a kid. I thought I'd never see another one. I think she said they ran theirs with the tractor PTO.
Beautiful machine!
@RamblinAround Yeah!! No texting or talkin' on the phone while operating that machine!!☺
@ShawnCFarm I would imagine they're pretty rare, I've never seen one before!!☺
@pimpinpenz that was a knarly hunk of lumber eh!!☺
@2024JayZ Ya better start lookin' now Buddy!! Winter will be here before ya know it!!☺
@300Dnikon Thanks for checkin' it out Bud!!☺

I wish I'd had that thirty years ago.
userunavailable3095
I was born too late for all the good stuff ..... :(
@kookiemoose Looks like it's reasonably safe in the right hands!!☺
Yeah Buddy!! I never notice that!!☺
@NomaDairy Ya can get alotta cords split with that thing eh!!☺
@krazy45cat Yeah Buddy!! Maybe that's why he painted the engine green eh!!☺
That was cool and prob a real rear find
Have a homemade acting in the same way on the farm, it is built of the rear axle and gearbox from a Bedford truck and runs on the PTO from the tractor
@More350Power Yeah unless your hand is on top of the log, ya shouls be alright!!☺
thinks for the shout out hehehe we bean trying to split some sweet gum that aged... its hard..... thats a nice machine
@MagicCadillac Thanks Mate!!☺
@edzgarage Didn't you see the big Red Button on the side!!☺
Betcha that thing has mashed a few digits in its day.
@seawind0721 It wouldn't take much to modify that into one!!☺
@CCSinventions Nah you want that belt to be able to slip when you come across a bad log like that!!☺
For as early as it is it looks relatively safe
That's neat Man we need a splitter bad
@KrankieV2 yeah that's some cool stuff eh!!☺
very nice you said thats a 23 h.p. motor? or was it made in 1923 wasnt clear
@vmxrm85 yeah Buddy!! cool stuff!!☺
@mirodeogrl that's a moneymaker there!! ya could put the kids to work!!☺
@805ROADKING I try to keep my hands away from anything that could remove them, lol. I learned the hard way, table saws are not always safe....
@V8power923 Yeah Buddy!! cool Stuff!!☺
Man, where was this when I was cutting wood in Missouri?
You think a chain driven system would deliver more torque?
Those stubborn knotted rounds would be exploding lol, probably not the safest.
Looks a little dangerous! lol
Where's the emergency stop? Things were sure different back in the day... survival of the fittest and smartest!
@mbyr31 That's a real moneymaker there Buddy!! It will put a hurtin' on ya if you don't pay attention though!!☺
@56CrownVick Yeah that's the first one i've seen too!!☺
@8087j Thanks Buddy!! Ya got that right!!☺
@josderedneck22 Yeah Buddy!! It is pretty cool!!☺
That's a cool looking log splitter, I wonder if I could find one for the house?
Great great great! The slippery belt was a pity. Fantastic machine ensemble (is there a heavy flywheel missing?).
Nah, that was in New Jersey!!☺
that's a nice machine!
Is that the Tractor Show in Texas that you were at? If so my family works at the kitchen
Excellent!!!
@oldchevy4x4 Yeah it's a cool machine!! it could zip through a good pile of wood effortlessly!!☺
@creamofcardstv Yeah Buddy!! that's the way to go!!☺
Did he finish with all ten fingers ?
At 1:59 you can see it hit his finger. Nice old beast!
@outdoorsman310 Pretty cool eh Buddy!!☺
Considering how long ago this video was I'm surprised you answered!
cool maybe more tension on the belt may have helped
The belt is suppose to be loose, it's a safety feature!!☺
Tell'em RK!!!! Today's people have no idea ...... >8^(
@500passwords Thanks Buddy!! that's the only kinda machine I've seen like that!!☺
@IHcubcadet Yeah Buddy!!☺
@Needmorehorsepower I said a 1920 3HP!! But it did sound confusing eh!!☺
@805ROADKING i don't think even the internet will go back far enough to tell you that one lol. it's pretty old
@DownUnderDoug I'm sure that monster has claimed a few victims over the years!!☺
SHHHHH!
@metrorhys10 Hook it up to an ice cream maker!!☺
add more weigth to the wheel so it has enough momentum, then it will not stop
@demojoe13694 Yeah pretty cool machine!!☺
a local has one for sale for a grand in Ellsworth.
Saves swinging an axe :)
effortless long as you dont get one that is actually hard wood which is 80% of the wood out there lolol still good tho for its antique value and it did do good on the softer not notty wood
@cisjohn2616 Almost!!☺
step one: give it a .5 ton flywheel
step two: replace belt with chain.
I don't think it needs heavier flywheel. only chain.
that awesome!! make wood chopping easy!
Hits finger @ 1:59 reaction on his face...
Make it gear drive. it will take care of any log
thats great!
Looks like you you need precision cut soft wood logs, with straight grain and no knots.........
viva the maker and the collector
i must build one i need to i have too much wood.
