For me, not a massive horror fan, who saw the film with a horror fan, all the material about Elizabeth hating what Sue is doing to her yet not able to stop self-administering The Substance is the strength and draw of this film. As Jeremy said, "Substance abuse" and the comment above about "The picture of Dorian Gray", they really indicate what elevates this film above slasher movies - in fact elevates "The Substance" above most movies. Dennis Quaid having the time of his life is joyous too.
I never read the Picture of Dorian Gray myself, but after telling someone about it last night after I watched it she basically said that it sounded like that story to her.
Congratulations for the 2 Million milestone, and thanks for your concise and fun reviews. I'm so glad you finally watched this particular movie and gave us your review. This movie affected me profoundly. I'm planning on watching it again this weekend.
This movie was insane, it had an intriguing premise that I thought could make for some good body horror but I was not prepared for the kind of experience that I got Demi Moore gives a very engaging performance as this woman who is a very famous icon but is nervous because she’s getting up there in age and is fearful that fame is gonna reject her for it, throughout the movie you’re just like “No, why are you doing this? It’s terrible for you” But at the same time you just see how incredibly self conscious she is due to the soulless nature of the life of a celebrity and you understand why she’d be led to feel that way, there’s 1 scene in particular where she’s getting dressed up in front of a mirror that you get to see to the full extent of how self conscious she is about herself and how much she stresses over the fact that she believes the world is getting ready to toss her aside now that she’s not young and beautiful anymore, it’s quite a sad journey to watch actually, and special props to the actress who played the younger version of her, she was great, starting off as just a younger version of Demi Moore’s character and ultimately doing all the things she wanted to do but is now too old for but quickly divulging into her own separate entity altogether, she very quickly became what I believe to be the more engaging of the 2, and Dennis Quaid was so great as this complete soulless dickhead agent and he just looked like he was having a blast, I also liked that the movie had a set list of rules for how The Substance works but it feels like it’s not too complicated, so there’s more to it then just 1 injection, younger self appears and that’s it but it’s not like a complete clusterfuck of complicated rules either, not overly simplified but I feel like you’ll get the jist of it And now we get to the big one, the body horror, this movie is absolutely disgusting in every sense of the word but in all the best ways, just the initial way of how the second version of Demi Moore’s character is created was nasty enough but the movie just keeps elevating the gore more and more as it went on and creates an absolute trauma inducing gore-fest that is effective in every sense of the word, it feels like everybody involved watched David Cronenberg’s The Fly, they said you can’t make something more gross than that and the director was like “Are you challenging me?” Because Jesus Christ this movie is nasty, so many times it just goes to places that’s even worse than the last place it went and I’m like “Holy shit, how can a movie possibly be *THIS* gory?” I’d say my only flaws are that early on I found the way the movie was edited a little flashy for my taste, it’s very jittery, blares the music over it quite loudly, it did calm down as the movie went on but yeah, early on it was a bit much to handle, the other is that I feel like the movie was a bit too long, this is like a full 2 and a half hour experience and I feel like for the type of story they’re telling it could’ve been shaved down by about 20 minutes or so, it didn’t need to be like super short but at the same time I don’t think it needed to be like an epic either But as a whole this was a super effective horror experience, it truly has been a while since I’ve said that a horror movie has traumatized me but I mean that in all the best ways, the performances were all great, the body horror was amazingly horrific and ultimately this is a deeply disturbing body horror experience that I’m not gonna forget anytime soon. 9/10
The movie itself establishes that Elizabeth has no control or recollection of Sue's actions and experiences, which makes taking the substance a deal with zero benefits to Elizabeth, which in turn makes it absolutely stupid that she doesn't stop the deal after the first week.
At first I was kind of disappointed that the younger version of Elizabeth wasn't played by a face swapped Demi Moore, but Margaret Qualley did an amazing job portraying "Sue". I can't wait to buy a physical copy of this and add it to my collection. Coralie Fargeat also directed "Revenge", which is another film that's definitely worth checking out.
Revenge was dumb as f..k. The script was terrible. She couldnt have lived after the fall. And her belly somehow had the can letters imprinted correctly instead of being in reverse. An absolute disaster of a movie made for braindead people who arent able to understand what they`re seeing.
@@NiPeMiRecenziiFilme The Substance is not much smarter. When you realize Demi's character doesn't remember a thing of what Sue does or experiences there's absolutely zero benefit to taking the substance in the first place and zero reason to not cut off the deal immediately.
This is my movie of the year. Reminded me of both David and Brandon Cronenberg and the satire aspect reminded me of American Psycho. The use of primary colours was very cool. And... bravura performances by Moore, Qualley and Quaid. Awesome film.

It’s terrible for you” But at the same time you just see how incredibly self conscious she is due to the soulless nature of the life of a celebrity and you understand why she’d be led to feel that way, there’s 1 scene in particular where she’s getting dressed up in front of a mirror that you get to see to the full extent of how self conscious she is about herself and how much she stresses over the fact that she believes the world is getting ready to toss her aside now that she’s not young and beautiful anymore, it’s quite a sad journey to watch actually, and special props to the actress who played the younger version of her, she was great, starting off as just a younger version of Demi Moore’s character and ultimately doing all the things she wanted to do but is now too old for but quickly divulging into her own separate entity altogether, she very quickly became what I believe to be the more engaging of the 2, and Dennis Quaid was so great as this complete soulless dickhead agent and he just looked like he was having a blast, I also liked that the movie had a set list of rules for how The Substance works but it feels like it’s not too complicated, so there’s more to it then just 1 injection, younger self appears and that’s it but it’s not like a complete clusterfuck of complicated rules either, not overly simplified but I feel like you’ll get the jist of it
And now we get to the big one, the body horror, this movie is absolutely disgusting in every sense of the word but in all the best ways, just the initial way of how the second version of Demi Moore’s character is created was nasty enough but the movie just keeps elevating the gore more and more as it went on and creates an absolute trauma inducing gore-fest that is effective in every sense of the word, it feels like everybody involved watched David Cronenberg’s The Fly, they said you can’t make something more gross than that and the director was like “Are you challenging me?” Because Jesus Christ this movie is nasty, so many times it just goes to places that’s even worse than the last place it went and I’m like “Holy shit, how can a movie possibly be *THIS* gory?”
I’d say my only flaws are that early on I found the way the movie was edited a little flashy for my taste, it’s very jittery, blares the music over it quite loudly, it did calm down as the movie went on but yeah, early on it was a bit much to handle, the other is that I feel like the movie was a bit too long, this is like a full 2 and a half hour experience and I feel like for the type of story they’re telling it could’ve been shaved down by about 20 minutes or so, it didn’t need to be like super short but at the same time I don’t think it needed to be like an epic either
But as a whole this was a super effective horror experience, it truly has been a while since I’ve said that a horror movie has traumatized me but I mean that in all the best ways, the performances were all great, the body horror was amazingly horrific and ultimately this is a deeply disturbing body horror experience that I’m not gonna forget anytime soon.
Why? She is sooo hot!
Revenge was great.
Revenge was dumb as f..k. The script was terrible. She couldnt have lived after the fall. And her belly somehow had the can letters imprinted correctly instead of being in reverse. An absolute disaster of a movie made for braindead people who arent able to understand what they`re seeing.
Just learned Margaret Qualley is the daughter of Andie MacDowell. She does have her mom's smile.
@@NiPeMiRecenziiFilme The Substance is not much smarter. When you realize Demi's character doesn't remember a thing of what Sue does or experiences there's absolutely zero benefit to taking the substance in the first place and zero reason to not cut off the deal immediately.
Dang congrats on the 2 mil! I've been a subscriber for what seems like nearly a decade now. Big fan from you're neighborly state of Oregon
Thanks to you for being one of my reviewers of confidence, keep it going Jeremy
Went in completely blind and so glad I did. Definitely top3 of the 2024 horror genera! So glad you watched it, I was waiting for this review!!!
Been watching since 2010, Congratulations on 2,000,000 subscribers 🎉
Congratulations 🎊 to you Jeremy for your 2 million!!!
This is my movie of the year. Reminded me of both David and Brandon Cronenberg and the satire aspect reminded me of American Psycho. The use of primary colours was very cool. And... bravura performances by Moore, Qualley and Quaid. Awesome film.
2 million well-deserved. Congrats Jeremy.
Damn. What an amazing review!!!! That last act... wow. I loved the movie
damn 2 million already, congrats man
I appreciate that karate punch @ the end so much 6:03 😂🤚👊💥

YEAH!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 2M Jeremy-Anu! Congrats, cutie. 🥰
2:20 "Is the balance going to be maintained?" My first thought is, "Of course not, otherwise there wouldn't be a movie." Although if they did maintain it and made a movie out of that, it would have been a genuine surprise.
Yeah, like if she follows the instructions to the letter, but gets a call or an email, “Uh, there seems to be a problem with your dosage.”
Good on you for watching it. And congrats on 2 mil subs!
Now give Strange Darling a go. It’s a cat and mouse thriller told in a non linear fashion. I think you’d like it
I wish it was still compelling after the obvious twist. The marketing really screwed up for that one.
@@jibblerino still found it a fun film and enjoyed the ride
I'm SO glad y'all got him to watch this- i havent clicked so fast in ages 😅 i adored the insane viewing experience I got from seeing it in theaters since i was originally waiting for streaming!

Jeremy recommending a film on VHS has become a high compliment.
Happy to see my favorite channel in this genre receive its 2 millionth sub🙌🏽

4:55 Best moment of any Jeremy Jahns review I have watched. And I have watched a ton.
I've been seeing things about this movie. I was wondering if he was going to review it. The cover photo says everything. Also, congratulations on 2 million subscribers.
Jeremy’s insightful reviews and charismatic presence have clearly resonated with millions, proving that genuine passion and a knack for storytelling can turn a hobby into a phenomenon. Here’s to many more reviews, laughs, and cinematic adventures! 🍿✨
Congrats on 2 million, man! Loved how the movie started with Kubrick vibes, then evolved into Cronenberg and ended as a Raimi one. Didn't see that coming but loved it!
Great wrap up as this was, in my opinion a FKN brilliant film and Demi shining. Oh and as an accredited film critic, I LOVE your channel mate !!!
Please don’t ever change homey, you are my most trusted go to movie critic. If you say something isn’t good doesn’t mean I won’t watch it but if you say something is great I’ll give it a shot every time.
4:20 "If they don't get nominated for Oscars than what the f... are we doing" Jeremy challenges the academy.
Valid statement jahns coming for his seat at the academy
@@isaiahsdead Academy of Mid?
I doubt the actors will be nominated (even though they absolutely should) but if the make up does not get a nomination, that’ll be a travesty.
I've been watching Jeremy since the days of his "younger self" and he always delivered the best movies reviews. Well deserved 2M, congrats!

@@BeerMetal58chill bro. You don’t need to add your point to every comment, no one cares.
@@BeerMetal58What's that have to do with a guy reviewing movies for a living? Holy shit, you political people are fucking pathetic.
to my mind, this movie delivered in all respects. the acting, story, social commentary, and the sound...kudos regarding the music selection!
glad you got round to watching it. I figured it would be a film you'd enjoy. and well done on selling enough of it without giving too much of it away
Congrats on the 2 Mil Jeremy! You deserve it, this movie was INSANE!
Congrats Jeremy on your 2 million subscribers! Only the OF fans knew about the rating ''Tour De Force''!! Gosh, I missed those!
Dennis Quaid is 🔥on the tail of John Noble,in his role as Lord Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, for the award for grossest open-mouth chewing scene in a feature length film!!
Wow, 2 million! Congrats Jeremy!

This is one I would absolutely have missed out on if it hadn’t been for this review, thank you.
Congrats on the 2 million subs Jeremy, been a fan of your channel for years ❤
The Substance belongs with Barbarian and Malignant as new wave horror classics. Clever, stylish, satirical, and visceral.
Malignant?
Are you serious?
That movie was derivative as fuck and flopped
@@broghad8241care to explain why? i never watched and im planning to
2M or 200K your vibe is always 🔥
