Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley absolutely smashed this. There's just that one scene where she's in the bathroom like an hour from lights up on her biggest moment and then... Her tooth falls out, and she has this crazed smile... It was awesome. Part of me thinks that the constant references to "You are one" meant that actually Elisabeth was always in control of Sue, the way she behaved as Sue was a reflection of how little she valued herself. I think we see that when towards the end she immediately regrets attempting to terminate Sue proclaiming that it will be their "biggest moment". The only thing I have questions about are when Sue is somehow brought back whilst Elisabeth is still conscious, and why does she seem to have superhuman strength? Was Sue, at that point, some sort of empty vessel? Flesh and blood but lacked soul which is why she is just a rageful monster (although her rage is understandable)
"You are one" can also be interpreted as substance abuse like drugs or alcohol in general. Once you're on it all feels fun and good, and once you're off it you say to yourself that you're a different person, but the reality is that the one that makes the bad choices and the one that regrets those choices, are the same person.

At first I was kind of disappointed that the younger version of Elizabeth wasn't played by a face swapped Demi Moore, but Margaret Qualley did an amazing job portraying "Sue". I can't wait to buy a physical copy of this and add it to my collection. Coralie Fargeat also directed "Revenge", which is another film that's definitely worth checking out.
Revenge was dumb as f..k. The script was terrible. She couldnt have lived after the fall. And her belly somehow had the can letters imprinted correctly instead of being in reverse. An absolute disaster of a movie made for braindead people who arent able to understand what they`re seeing.
@@NiPeMiRecenziiFilme The Substance is not much smarter. When you realize Demi's character doesn't remember a thing of what Sue does or experiences there's absolutely zero benefit to taking the substance in the first place and zero reason to not cut off the deal immediately.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the Oscar nominations for the two ladies. They were superb in very demanding roles and (at the very least) deserve top honors recognition.
This is my movie of the year. Reminded me of both David and Brandon Cronenberg and the satire aspect reminded me of American Psycho. The use of primary colours was very cool. And... bravura performances by Moore, Qualley and Quaid. Awesome film.
Jeremy, I love your videos and hope you don’t ever stop doing this UA-cam thing! I’ve watched you since the beginning and you’re one of the few UA-camrs I consistently watch these days. I still look forward to all your reviews!
Congrats on 2 million, man! Loved how the movie started with Kubrick vibes, then evolved into Cronenberg and ended as a Raimi one. Didn't see that coming but loved it!
Walsh also regularly promotes the idea of “anti-white racism,” which he claims is “the most prevalent, dangerous, and systemic form of racism in America.” Walsh said racial minorities who fear racists attacks from white people are “paranoid, unreasonable, not supported by reality,” that their fears are “rooted in anti-white bigotry” and that they are “the problem.”
Incredible video. I've seen tons of reviews and thoughts on this movie because I loved every part of it, and you're the first one I've seen to mention the concept of hyper reality, which makes the movie a thousand times better, because when you understand that, then the body horror and everything else becomes waaaaaay more awesome and digestible.
I'm SO glad y'all got him to watch this- i havent clicked so fast in ages 😅 i adored the insane viewing experience I got from seeing it in theaters since i was originally waiting for streaming!
This movie was insane, it had an intriguing premise that I thought could make for some good body horror but I was not prepared for the kind of experience that I got Demi Moore gives a very engaging performance as this woman who is a very famous icon but is nervous because she’s getting up there in age and is fearful that fame is gonna reject her for it, throughout the movie you’re just like “No, why are you doing this? It’s terrible for you” But at the same time you just see how incredibly self conscious she is due to the soulless nature of the life of a celebrity and you understand why she’d be led to feel that way, there’s 1 scene in particular where she’s getting dressed up in front of a mirror that you get to see to the full extent of how self conscious she is about herself and how much she stresses over the fact that she believes the world is getting ready to toss her aside now that she’s not young and beautiful anymore, it’s quite a sad journey to watch actually, and special props to the actress who played the younger version of her, she was great, starting off as just a younger version of Demi Moore’s character and ultimately doing all the things she wanted to do but is now too old for but quickly divulging into her own separate entity altogether, she very quickly became what I believe to be the more engaging of the 2, and Dennis Quaid was so great as this complete soulless dickhead agent and he just looked like he was having a blast, I also liked that the movie had a set list of rules for how The Substance works but it feels like it’s not too complicated, so there’s more to it then just 1 injection, younger self appears and that’s it but it’s not like a complete clusterfuck of complicated rules either, not overly simplified but I feel like you’ll get the jist of it And now we get to the big one, the body horror, this movie is absolutely disgusting in every sense of the word but in all the best ways, just the initial way of how the second version of Demi Moore’s character is created was nasty enough but the movie just keeps elevating the gore more and more as it went on and creates an absolute trauma inducing gore-fest that is effective in every sense of the word, it feels like everybody involved watched David Cronenberg’s The Fly, they said you can’t make something more gross than that and the director was like “Are you challenging me?” Because Jesus Christ this movie is nasty, so many times it just goes to places that’s even worse than the last place it went and I’m like “Holy shit, how can a movie possibly be *THIS* gory?” I’d say my only flaws are that early on I found the way the movie was edited a little flashy for my taste, it’s very jittery, blares the music over it quite loudly, it did calm down as the movie went on but yeah, early on it was a bit much to handle, the other is that I feel like the movie was a bit too long, this is like a full 2 and a half hour experience and I feel like for the type of story they’re telling it could’ve been shaved down by about 20 minutes or so, it didn’t need to be like super short but at the same time I don’t think it needed to be like an epic either But as a whole this was a super effective horror experience, it truly has been a while since I’ve said that a horror movie has traumatized me but I mean that in all the best ways, the performances were all great, the body horror was amazingly horrific and ultimately this is a deeply disturbing body horror experience that I’m not gonna forget anytime soon. 9/10
The movie itself establishes that Elizabeth has no control or recollection of Sue's actions and experiences, which makes taking the substance a deal with zero benefits to Elizabeth, which in turn makes it absolutely stupid that she doesn't stop the deal after the first week.
You're pretty much my favourite movie UA-camr so all I gotta say is THANK YOU, SIR, the second Mio is well earned and the third won't be far behind 👍👍👍
Saw this at the Movie Theater last weekend, its probably my favorite movie of the year so far. Reminded me about Cronenberg a lot. Saw REVENGE from the same director and while not perfect it was good but this is a step up. Looking forward for her next work. Keep on keeping up!.
👆. For me, not a massive horror fan, who saw the film with a horror fan, all the material about Elizabeth hating what Sue is doing to her yet not able to stop self-administering The Substance is the strength and draw of this film. As Jeremy said, "Substance abuse" and the comment above about "The picture of Dorian Gray", they really indicate what elevates this film above slasher movies - in fact elevates "The Substance" above most movies. Dennis Quaid having the time of his life is joyous too.
I never read the Picture of Dorian Gray myself, but after telling someone about it last night after I watched it she basically said that it sounded like that story to her.

The fact that in the very previous scene he doesn’t wash his hands after taking a piss makes it so much worse.
The sound effects makes it that much grosser, heh!

@@nicomalThat tells you everything you need to know about the channel owner.
i watched your channel ten years ago and just recently stumbled upon it again, it fills me with deep joy to see the success of your channel. i’m so happy to see you are still on the platform ❤
Congrats Jeremy! Long time viewer here. Can't wait for another decade and beyond of your reviews.
Congratulations 🎊 to you Jeremy for your 2 million!!!
Why? She is sooo hot!
Revenge was great.
Revenge was dumb as f..k. The script was terrible. She couldnt have lived after the fall. And her belly somehow had the can letters imprinted correctly instead of being in reverse. An absolute disaster of a movie made for braindead people who arent able to understand what they`re seeing.
Just learned Margaret Qualley is the daughter of Andie MacDowell. She does have her mom's smile.
@@NiPeMiRecenziiFilme The Substance is not much smarter. When you realize Demi's character doesn't remember a thing of what Sue does or experiences there's absolutely zero benefit to taking the substance in the first place and zero reason to not cut off the deal immediately.
Thanks to you for being one of my reviewers of confidence, keep it going Jeremy
I appreciate that karate punch @ the end so much 6:03 😂🤚👊💥
It's his THING
@@everythingisawesome2903Yes, but he had stopped doing it for a while, then he resumed it. And we all love it!
Congratulations for the 2 Million milestone, and thanks for your concise and fun reviews. I'm so glad you finally watched this particular movie and gave us your review. This movie affected me profoundly. I'm planning on watching it again this weekend.
Congratulations on 2 million 🎉
Now let's get you to 3 million
Didnt think you would review this one. Awesome! Second best movie of the year for me next to Strange Darling
I would really like to be 13 again. So I can watch a horror movie, without being bored or laughing my ass off
@komshobu2 what would you say was the last horror movie that actually got you? Like creeped you out? Scared you? Etc
Saturday Night was a little loose and fast but it was great
Same. Strange Darling and The Substance are genuinely amazing.
@komshobu2 seems like not being 13 isnt the real problem for you bud.
Good on you for watching it. And congrats on 2 mil subs!
Now give Strange Darling a go. It’s a cat and mouse thriller told in a non linear fashion. I think you’d like it
I wish it was still compelling after the obvious twist. The marketing really screwed up for that one.
@@jibblerino still found it a fun film and enjoyed the ride
Congrats on the 2 million subs Jeremy, been a fan of your channel for years ❤
Congruatuations on 2 Million Subscribers Jeremy. I've been following you for over a decade now. I'm glad to see you've doing so well for yourself
Jeremy recommending a film on VHS has become a high compliment.
Jeremy: it's The Fly + Requiem for a Dream. Me: it's The Neon Demon + The Nutty Professor. 😂
I agree with you wholeheartedly about the Oscar nominations for the two ladies. They were superb in very demanding roles and (at the very least) deserve top honors recognition.
your channel is till one of the best and the one i keep watching for honest reviews. keep up the amazing work and heres to more reviews to come.
Congrats on 2 million! For some reason I thought you were past this. I lose track after watching you for over a decade or something now. Good times!
Happy to see my favorite channel in this genre receive its 2 millionth sub🙌🏽
This is my movie of the year. Reminded me of both David and Brandon Cronenberg and the satire aspect reminded me of American Psycho. The use of primary colours was very cool. And... bravura performances by Moore, Qualley and Quaid. Awesome film.
I've been waiting for this review 🙌
Jeremy, I love your videos and hope you don’t ever stop doing this UA-cam thing! I’ve watched you since the beginning and you’re one of the few UA-camrs I consistently watch these days. I still look forward to all your reviews!
Congrats on 2 million, man! Loved how the movie started with Kubrick vibes, then evolved into Cronenberg and ended as a Raimi one. Didn't see that coming but loved it!
From Movieman to 2Mil. Insanity. Congratulations Jeremy!
I've been watching Jeremy since the days of his "younger self" and he always delivered the best movies reviews. Well deserved 2M, congrats!

Glad he took the time out of his busy schedule… must have been really difficult for him to divert his attention away from DailyWire+🙏🤣
Yes thanks for taking time out of his busy schedule to watch a real movie… must have been difficult for Jeremy to tear himself away from DailyWire+ 🙏🤣
@@jabrokneetoeknee6448 way to idk show ur a moron...
Congratulations on the 2 million jeremy ,I've been watching from day one and you deserve it brother 💙
This movie was insane, it had an intriguing premise that I thought could make for some good body horror but I was not prepared for the kind of experience that I got
Demi Moore gives a very engaging performance as this woman who is a very famous icon but is nervous because she’s getting up there in age and is fearful that fame is gonna reject her for it, throughout the movie you’re just like “No, why are you doing this? It’s terrible for you” But at the same time you just see how incredibly self conscious she is due to the soulless nature of the life of a celebrity and you understand why she’d be led to feel that way, there’s 1 scene in particular where she’s getting dressed up in front of a mirror that you get to see to the full extent of how self conscious she is about herself and how much she stresses over the fact that she believes the world is getting ready to toss her aside now that she’s not young and beautiful anymore, it’s quite a sad journey to watch actually, and special props to the actress who played the younger version of her, she was great, starting off as just a younger version of Demi Moore’s character and ultimately doing all the things she wanted to do but is now too old for but quickly divulging into her own separate entity altogether, she very quickly became what I believe to be the more engaging of the 2, and Dennis Quaid was so great as this complete soulless dickhead agent and he just looked like he was having a blast, I also liked that the movie had a set list of rules for how The Substance works but it feels like it’s not too complicated, so there’s more to it then just 1 injection, younger self appears and that’s it but it’s not like a complete clusterfuck of complicated rules either, not overly simplified but I feel like you’ll get the jist of it
And now we get to the big one, the body horror, this movie is absolutely disgusting in every sense of the word but in all the best ways, just the initial way of how the second version of Demi Moore’s character is created was nasty enough but the movie just keeps elevating the gore more and more as it went on and creates an absolute trauma inducing gore-fest that is effective in every sense of the word, it feels like everybody involved watched David Cronenberg’s The Fly, they said you can’t make something more gross than that and the director was like “Are you challenging me?” Because Jesus Christ this movie is nasty, so many times it just goes to places that’s even worse than the last place it went and I’m like “Holy shit, how can a movie possibly be *THIS* gory?”
I’d say my only flaws are that early on I found the way the movie was edited a little flashy for my taste, it’s very jittery, blares the music over it quite loudly, it did calm down as the movie went on but yeah, early on it was a bit much to handle, the other is that I feel like the movie was a bit too long, this is like a full 2 and a half hour experience and I feel like for the type of story they’re telling it could’ve been shaved down by about 20 minutes or so, it didn’t need to be like super short but at the same time I don’t think it needed to be like an epic either
But as a whole this was a super effective horror experience, it truly has been a while since I’ve said that a horror movie has traumatized me but I mean that in all the best ways, the performances were all great, the body horror was amazingly horrific and ultimately this is a deeply disturbing body horror experience that I’m not gonna forget anytime soon. 9/10
The movie itself establishes that Elizabeth has no control or recollection of Sue's actions and experiences, which makes taking the substance a deal with zero benefits to Elizabeth, which in turn makes it absolutely stupid that she doesn't stop the deal after the first week.
I would have never known about this movie had you not made this video, so thanks!
One of the best films of this year, for sure. You nailed the slightly surprised sentiment I also experienced when I watched this masterpiece.
I loved it so much and I was so excited to see your reaction, I thought it would have been Awesometacular for sure. Love your videos man!
Dang congrats on the 2 mil! I've been a subscriber for what seems like nearly a decade now. Big fan from you're neighborly state of Oregon
It was very thought provoking. I'm glad I saw it in the theater. Demi Moore deserves an Oscar for sure!
Props on 2 million subs, Jeremy. IMO, no reviewer more deserving.
Great wrap up as this was, in my opinion a FKN brilliant film and Demi shining. Oh and as an accredited film critic, I LOVE your channel mate !!!

Saw this at the Movie Theater last weekend, its probably my favorite movie of the year so far. Reminded me about Cronenberg a lot. Saw REVENGE from the same director and while not perfect it was good but this is a step up. Looking forward for her next work. Keep on keeping up!.
Congrats on the 2 Mil Jeremy! You deserve it, this movie was INSANE!

4:20 "If they don't get nominated for Oscars than what the f... are we doing" Jeremy challenges the academy.
Valid statement jahns coming for his seat at the academy
@@isaiahsdead Academy of Mid?
I doubt the actors will be nominated (even though they absolutely should) but if the make up does not get a nomination, that’ll be a travesty.
I am suprised more people aren't seeing a parallel with the Picture of Dorian Gray, they are extremely similar.
Yeah it’s nuts when it’s the most obvious comparison
Oh, wow. I never put two and two together but that’s a great side by side comparison.
You're expecting a lot from JJ's new target market of right-wing idiots.
Yo Illidan mention! You didn't mention it much but the music's GLORIOUSLY good in this movie. Very good sound design!

2:20 "Is the balance going to be maintained?" My first thought is, "Of course not, otherwise there wouldn't be a movie." Although if they did maintain it and made a movie out of that, it would have been a genuine surprise.
