This video is awesome! Anyone can find the specs but sample photos speak volumes. I miss Cambridgeshire as I’m from Hawaii but lived in Huntingdon for a few years. St Ives is a beautiful village! Thanks!!
Thank you Victor. I'm glad you got to see some of Cambridgeshire, it has some wonderful towns and villages. Someday I'll visit Hawaii and compare the two 🙂
The same happened to me today. I went to Zurich for some street photography with my brand new 16mm f2.8. I got into this photographers flow while the people around me were rushing by. Photography is such a superb way to slow down. I really like this lens and it will not get off of my X-Pro2 any time soon. The wide angle of the lens needs some time to get accustomed to but then it is a shining pearl. Beautiful place where you took your photographs!
Thank you, I couldn't agree more. Photography slows you down in a really nice way. I'm actually using a 18 mm f2 a lot at the moment. I'm still not quite sure what my perfect focal length is :-)
@@ChrisBoland Another beautiful thing about photography. Change the focal length and you get something totally different. I like wide angle imagery a lot and shoot mainly with lenses in this field. But recently I picked up action photography (for my sports club) and therefore had to invest in a very fast zoom lens. After a lot of trial and error the results are getting better now and I found another very exciting field of photography. But it is a bit exhausting and not so much relaxing as landscape and street photography. At least not for me (yet) ;)
I just recently got this lens too and I've been finding it challenging to shoot. A majority of the pictures I've seen with the 1.4 tend to rely on its shallow depth of field to maintain visual focus on the subject -- something I cannot really achieve with this lens. It was nice seeing this video for a bit of inspiration on making photographs with this field of view and deep focus.
Thanks for watching Musab. You're right it's a very different technique to the 1.4. Taking away the shallow depth of field look makes things harder. I'm glad the video was helpful 🙂👍
Hi David. I think from memory the 14mm had less distortion at the corners. I don't normally think or worry about things like that too much, but the 14 felt really technically excellent. However, it's actually two stops different, so lets in four times less than the 16 1.4 which is a huge amount when you are in low light. The 16mm 1.4 is really in another class in my opinion, it's got a great look to it.
Hi Chris, would you mind taking the same photo with the 14mm and the 16mm f2.8? I've read that the 16mm f2.8 might actually be wider than 16mm. I was curious to see how wide it actually is. Thank you very much.
Why did you sell the 16mmF1.4, didn’t you like it? It is one of the focal lengths that I enjoy to use a lot. I saw your other video about the 14mmF2.8 and I’d like it very much but I have asked a few people and they all think that the 16mmF1.4 is more versatile. What is your opinion about it? What was your sensation about the 16mmF2.8?
Hi Andres. I think the 16mn 1.4 is incredible - I do miss it actually. I sold it as I wanted something lighter for walking around with and the 18 f2 was much smaller. The 16 1.4 is really quite special. The 2.8 I recall loving the colours, the size, the light weight. There was a bit of noticeable distortion I think. I have a video about that here somewhere. 🙂
Chris Boland The thin is that I would like to purchase the 16mmF1.4 but it is very expensive when you have to switch systems and buy all to start. I keep hearing that the 16mm wide open is not very good but performs well at F5.6. I would like to start with two lenses but I can’t decide myself. Thanks for your help
@@valhala73 Yes, the money was one reason why I sold it 🙂 Seriously though - I can't really think of a bad Fuji lens. On paper it feels more complicated choosing between them, but they're pretty much all great in different ways.
Subscribed! I like the pace and the samples! How are you finding it a year on? I have also just sold my 16mm 1.4 for this. It is a great lens aside from the CA wide open. However, I really don't use 1.4 and don't shoot up close. With all its quirks, I think the 16mm 2.8 would fit my needs quite well.
Thanks very much Tristan. I really enjoyed using the 16mm 2.8 however I recently sold it as I was finding myself using the 18mm f2 much more. I think I prefer that field of view, even though the difference isn't too much.
@@ChrisBoland Thanks! I'll see if this lens is also for me. I'm just in the process of downsizing my lenses to Fujicrons asthey suit the X-pro series more.
@@ChrisBoland Ahh we took very similar routes but I ended up selling the 35 f2 and 1.4 for the Mitakon 35mm 0.95. It's an amazing lens (basically a 50mm 1.4 on a full frame).
I just want to say "Hi" as you asked for in your video... ;-) I really liked your pictures and the way you edited them. I'm thinking about buying this lens for some kind of street photography...
Hey Chris, I have not long ago discovered your channel and I must say, I love your photographs and the general cut of your jib... be it hippyish (and what's wrong with that?) or otherwise.
@@ChrisBoland I like to see what the equipment is capable of in the hands of a photographer and am not interested in speal about factory specs, you did a great job. I have subscribed to watch more.
Nice review without boring us with details we can all read on Fuji web site. Thank you
Thanks so much Mehran 🙂👍 Thanks very much for watching.
I just have to say that your voice is just so calming, loved listening and watching your vid :) Nice shots!
Hey, thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. Thank you very much for watching.

Colours are rich but not overly saturated - beautiful.
Thank you Stan.
This lens appears to have outstanding micro contrast...gives it that "pop" in photos that is so often missing these days. Great video!
Thanks Bill. You're right - it makes the colours very saturated too I think. It's a great little lens.

You're right - using a very different lens completely changes things 🙂 It's a nice way to not get bored.
Phenomenal photos!! I truly enjoy your work and I hope to get that good!!

Hi Chris, curious how you would compare this lens vs the 14mm f/2.8? Also, are you missing the extra stop of light with the 16 f/1.4?

Hi John. That's really interesting. I've heard some lenses are wider than they say. Unfortunately I don't have the 14 anymore though.

I agree. The smaller lenses are super. I have sold a few of the larger ones, but am keeping my 35 1.4 for portraits 🙂

Hey 👋 Thank you. It's a lovely lens, very small and focuses quickly. I mainly use 23mm for street, but am starting to prefer a bit wider.
The search for the master duck lens continues!
It'll be on the lens roadmap soon 😊🦆
Chris do you recommend this lens for: Street/Asotrophotography/Landscape? I mean im between this one or 23 F2
I think for astro or anything at night faster is better and possibly wider too. So for night maybe not f2.8. 16 1.4 would be great. 23 f2 maybe.
What's your main walk around lens?
Just in life generally? I like 23, so X100. Or I'm thinking I might prefer a little wider, but 23 on Fuji is great.
Hey Chris, I have not long ago discovered your channel and I must say, I love your photographs and the general cut of your jib... be it hippyish (and what's wrong with that?) or otherwise.
Thank you very much indeed. Definitely nothing wrong with hippyish - something to aspire to. I'll keep working on it ✌️😍✌️
From what I've seen so far, zen rather than hippyish would suit. Keep the videos coming Chris, they are something to inspire to.
Thank you 🙂

I enjoy the 16mm and it is sharp! Curious... what post processing program do you use? Excellent color rendition throughout the photos👍
Thanks David. I use Lightroom. I'm going to do a video or blog about my editing soon hopefully.
3:41 beautiful!
Thank you 🙂🦆!
What about a pic of a dogs nose?
😊 How could I forget. That'll have to be a whole new video.
I get torticollis from your pictures!
I don't know what to make of that. I hope you get better soon.
