Your septic guys just conned you into paying for an unnessecarily big excavator. I pulled several stumps a LOT bigger than that one with a 4,5 ton Take-Job on rubber tracks just this summer, helping my mom out at her cottage. (Felling trees, demolishing buildnings, buildning new roads along slopes, the usual crap) I encountered trees with widespread roots and ones with deep roots and, as mentioned, a LOT bigger than yours. It did not take all day, it all went very smoothly. Ok, in all honesty there was this one big ass birch tree where the rootlump was so heavy and saturated with cement-hard dried clay the excavator (that lifts a ton without any issues as long as you don't go playing "not-so-merry-go-round" while lifting) could barely lift it even after severing every single litte root, from every single angle and that root took about 20 minutes to pull from start to finishing filling in the hole by finally tipping the entire 4,5 ton excavator about 30-40 degrees and just sitting there for a minute or so letting gravity do it's thing. But other than that i kept a great pace. I'm not a machine operator (though i'd like to imagine myself as a natural) I've driven bobcats and skylifts in-and outdoors many times! Unlicensed obviously, both on commercial sites and on private property, but this was the second time i've ever driven an excavator in my life and the diference in difficulty from driving a bobcat is just immense . The first time i tried it out was 2 half-days in a 1 ton "excavator". If it was up to me i'd just call it a hydraulic shovel, hahaha! It didn't even have a roof and i only used it on paved land and indoors, never in any shape or form of terrain. Suddenly i'm in a 4,5 times bigger machine with a tiltrotor expected to remove stones about 1,5-2 times the machines maximum lifting capacity. Sounds like bragging? Have you ever, by hand, dug up a stone you could never ever have lifted out of a hole with your sheer strenght? Well, there you have it folks..
Finally an operator!!! Wrong bucket?? It got the entire job done in minutes! Loaded out and hole covered. Incompetent? That guy didn't waste a move. SMOOTH OPERATOR!!! That's the kind of partner I wanted when I was working ,but hard to find as you can tell by comments. Again Nice!
Jeez, another white knight. Only thing I noticed was that it was quite a large bucket for stump pulling as you want as much focused power and do as little damage to the yard.... gard to do either well with such a large bucket. On the other hand as I said, way overkill on power so it's not a big beal specially if this machine was coming from another job and headed back to the yard, saving labor and transportation costs . Didn't see the op do anything wrong, looked really smooth. That all said, I don't think the guy needs or wants your protection on this matter LOL
It's not just about wasting moves, it's about delivering a service to your customer at a fair price. And just the cost of transporting this guys machine (wich needs a lorry rather than a smaller trailer behind a 4x4) would have given me an entire day to remove that stump with a mini excavator without even increasing the cost to the customer...
Might be decent at pulling sticks but for real a 50k machine to pull that stump??? Get real you could pull that easily with a Max 18k machine. They fucked these people if they had that hauled in on a semi lowboy and rented this or whatever. It was overkill to the max!
For all those whining about the cost and size of the machine. There is a septic system going in also just so you this is not here for the stump only the stump just needed to be taked out end of. story.
I have dug thousands of stumps. The ground was soft and he dug right up to the stump with his first hole. He should have drove around behind the dirt mound and simply pulled the stump into that hole. He dug five times as much was needed to get that small thing out. Small, yep, I just dug up four oak tress from around my house with 36 in trunks and over 12 foot wide root systems with my John Deere 510 backhoe. I had the whole tree and used the trunk for leverage to shove them over. OK, I did hook a chain up in the tree and use a 8,000 lb cable puller and 60 feet of cable to help them start to tip.
Tom Hoffmann would have pulled that out with his 35:1 mechanical advantage setup pulling with his Kia. Check out his video. Pretty cool. Thanks for posting. I like the pivoting attachment on the end of the excavator.
Why did the clown go so deep, was he trying to hit pipes/wires? That thing surely had the power to just roll the stump right out out the ground without digging at all.
really nice bucket! the new cat excavators are probably the best on the market, cat hit a home run I think. the only thing that sucks is all the emission BS they have to put on em'. that's why the rear end is so large, for all the emission junk.
grading bucket wouldn't be my first choice, but go with what ya got, 320 would take out stumps many times that size if room to work. Ash is pretty easy tree to dig up too, i don't think i remember how to operate without a pro thumb anymore. Fresh stump on a flatbed, count the number of lost windshields on the way to the dump.
It's a grading bucket. Usually when you equip a machine with rotortilt you also buy a bucket set consisting of a grading bucket, cable bucket, teeth bucket (designed for RT use) and also what we call a VA trench bucket here in Sweden. VA stands for Vatten(Water) and Avlopp(Sewer), meaning a bucket in a good size for water and sewer pipe trenches. Pallet forks can also be handy but it's more common on wheeled excavators - very handy to unload a truck comming with construction/building material.. for example.
32ton excavator is made for brutal job you can pull it toward first hole ,think it'll come right up less dirt pile less mess and beautiful grass land remain
Yeah, its pretty sad. I contracted to have the septic system installed, the septic guys brought in (and paid for) the big excavator to pull the tree trunk.

wow. I just drove down to the local rental, hopped on their backhoe ford tractor drove it home, dug out the stump and back in 42 minuets. They showed me what each lever did.

Anyways, its all a moot point - the cost of the tree stump cleanup was included in the cost of the system, and we ended up with a great system that actually worked.
Nothing wrong withe the bucket choice for the job. Also whoever thinks it is a 32ton machine knows nothing. The 3 in 320 signifies the series of machine, a 3 means excavator in cat language and 20 is a 20ton machine with a maximum operating weight of 27.225ton or 54,450lbs that would include a thumb witch is not necessary if you know how to properly operate. They are putting in a new septic system, so the excavator needs to be there for the septic system installation anyways I assume.

Typically dig stumps off the front or back of your machine so your not wrenching your track chains. Plus alot more pulling power
Sometimes that how much digging it takes..tap roots etc..if they'd only leave taller stumps the leverage helps pop them out with less digging..
Jay Todd gd
Very smart!
Why wouldn't you take the large roots away instead of putting them back in the hole
Wouldn’t you have better break out force if you took off that tilt rotator
Are you trying to dig A basement?
Too much damage for such a small root system. But you will learn all that as you go. 👌🇺🇸💪
He,s playing the game with owner?
wow. I just drove down to the local rental, hopped on their backhoe ford tractor drove it home, dug out the stump and back in 42 minuets. They showed me what each lever did.

Would it stop an ash though? Those things are relentless.
